Bold and beautiful, this is intense ruby red, has a deep floral perfume, fruit-cake richness, kitchen spice, a splash of vanilla bean and butter menthol. There’s a silky texture and then tannin and oak add substance to the wine. Amazing with a gelatinous oxtail stew.

Deep red mauve, this McLaren Vale red is a mixed bag of varieties, a blend of cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot. The palate is chunky with invigorating red fruit, firm tannins and drying finish. Well-priced young red and brilliant with a barbecued T-bone steak and your favourite condiments.

Deep ruby colour, fleshy black fruit, sweet vanilla oak and ripe tannins are on offer in this Langhorne Creek red, along with a waft of dusty oak. Very drinkable right now or will age well, under cork, for some years. Try with slowly-braised lamb shanks in a tomato, garlic and red wine sauce.

Devil’s Lair 2011 $ The Hidden Cave Cabernet Shiraz

A nostalgic blend in Oz that rarely disappoints, although it’s not so common in Margaret River, where this is from. Has some weight, roundness, spicy fruit and warmth and would be special with a thick slice of rare aged beef and horseradish – a brilliant combination.

Bright ruby mauve in colour, this has blackcurrant and dill spice balanced by finely textured tannins and is bundled together in a long and impressive medium-weighted package. Some clever oak handling adds complexity and interest. A great companion to lamb shanks with roast vegetables.

Light straw in colour with an up-front nose of grass and gooseberry. The palate is lively and tastes of tropical guava and kiwi fruit. Fresh and cleansing, it deserves to be drunk now and a goat’s cheese salad is an ideal accompaniment.

By Claymore Wines, this ruby-coloured shiraz has a nose of spice and spearmint and a medium-weighted palate with light red berries, tannins and acidity. Oak plays a judicious role in the structure of the wine which is from a cool vintage. Marvellous with a casserole of veal ribs and fresh veg.

A good-value pinot from near Queenstown and a label we have enjoyed over the last few years. This vintage has produced a very light wine, cherry in colour with a subtle savoury meaty nose and a soft caressing palate and finish. Open and serve with a rack of sweet new-season lamb which will be in the shops very soon.

Bright ruby-red in colour, this Barossa shiraz from a mild vintage is a mediumbodied youngster. It has chewy tannins up front, a spicy red fruit, good length and drying acidity on the finish. Although not the plump wine we would see from a warm vintage, it is very enjoyable with lighter foods. Try with a beef schnitzel and fresh salad.

This has breeding that belies its name. It’s a typical Bordeaux-style Right Bank blend that is made up of the five classic varieties, with merlot dominating. Generous in flavour, it’s long in the palate with ripe red fruits, coffee oak and balancing tannins. Try with a mixed barbecued grill.
