Named after the neighbouring hills in Tuscany, this very quaffable young red is a blend of the region’s internationally-famous sangiovese grape and some merlot and syrah to give it a modern twist. It has light tannins, juicy red fruit and is a ripper with pizza.

This Margaret River savvy has been partially fermented in oak to add complexity to the lemony/snow-pea characters of the fruit. An austere acid style that is dynamite with a plate of quickly seared scallops and a green salad.

As fresh as a cooling summer breeze, this Marlborough savvy has buckets of lively citrus and grassy fruit and a long sustained dry palate with a crunching acid finish. Absolutely brilliant with a plate of crisp squid rings and a twist of salt and pepper.

Mid ruby in colour, this Margaret River red has a bucket load of regional characters – blackcurrant, olive and eucalypt along with the wine maker’s stamp of cedary oak and firm tannins. A slow-roasted shoulder of lamb is a winner with this.

A contemporary light Margaret River chardonnay with a subtle smoky-oak flavouring and a silky texture marrying to the stone fruit and citrus of the variety. The finish has a lemony zestiness that works well with a plate of grilled reef fish and a crisp salad.

Here’s a different name for a Rhone blend with shiraz as its foundation. Mid red/ mauve in colour, it’s a package of kitchen spice and red fruits with gentle tannins and a soft finish. Quaffable now and a delight with tomato-sauce pasta.

A drink-soon medium-weighted red with dried mint, fennel and dusty earth characters and some blackcurrant fruit driving it to a soft acid finish. Oak is subservient. An inexpensive introduction to this celebrated estate, try with a snitzel – young beef in bread crumbs.

Leafy, spearmint characters show here with a sizeable dollop of blackberry fruit and they combine well with a spicy French oak component and drying chalky tannins. Perfect with a roasted leg of lamb and a healthy splash of mint sauce.

Adelaide Hills is the home of this wine, a leaner style of chardonnay with subtle oak, citrus and stone fruit and a bracing acid finish. Magic with a plump breast of chicken gently poached in stock and served with fluffy boiled rice.

Cape Mentelle 2011 Cabernet Merlot Trinders

Medium red/mauve in colour and a nose of blackcurrant and olive with a spicy lift. The palate is a delightful mix of dark berries, grainy tannins and a cigar leaf complexity that stretches to a drying finish. Lovely young red with a side of roasted capretto (baby goat).

Grant Burge 2010 The Holy Trinity GSM

Cleverly named, this trinity of varieties offers floral aromatics along with plummy fruit and gravelly tannins coming together in this very generous red wine. From a brilliant vintage, it also has cellaring time ahead of it. Moroccan lamb shanks with this.
