As fresh as a cooling summer breeze, this Marlborough savvy has buckets of lively citrus and grassy fruit and a long sustained dry palate with a crunching acid finish. Absolutely brilliant with a plate of crisp squid rings and a twist of salt and pepper.

Medium-bodied Margaret River red with blackcurrant, plum and a waft of eucalypt. Lovely balance here with a cleansing acid finish and it’s a wine that suits a roasted rack of herb-crusted pink lamb and don’t forget the crunchy vegetables.

Here’s a different name for a Rhone blend with shiraz as its foundation. Mid red/ mauve in colour, it’s a package of kitchen spice and red fruits with gentle tannins and a soft finish. Quaffable now and a delight with a meaty pizza or red-sauce pasta.

You’ll see a bundle of tropical fruit in this youngster along with a more austere herbal character for interest and then a squeeze of lime juice for a sharp finish. The wine is long and dry. Super with some flash-fried scallops and a citrus dressing.

A contemporary light Margaret River chardonnay with a subtle smoky oak flavouring and a silky texture marrying to the stone fruit and citrus of the variety. The finish has zest and zing and suits a plate of locally-caught grilled reef fish and a crisp salad.

Bright ruby mauve in colour, this has blackcurrant and dill spice balanced by finely textured tannins and is bundled together in a long and impressive mediumweighted package. Some clever oak handling adds complexity and interest. A great companion to lamb shanks with roast vegetables.

Leafy, spearmint characters show here with a sizeable dollop of blackberry fruit and they combine well with a spicy French oak component and drying chalky tannins. Perfect with a roasted leg of lamb and a healthy splash of mint sauce.

A nostalgic blend in Oz that rarely disappoints, although it’s not so common in Margaret River, where this is from. Has some weight, roundness, spicy fruit and warmth and would be special with a thick slice of rare aged beef and horseradish – a brilliant combination.

Henschke 2010 Henry’s Seven Barossa

This is a bright ruby colour with a waft of kitchen spice, plum and floral notes and it has a flavourful palate of sweet red fruits, approachable tannins and a drying cleansing finish. A drink-soon red wine from a very smart Barossa vintage. Try with grilled snags and mash.

Cloudy Bay Pelorus Brut (NZ)

single

A non-vintage sparkler from Marlborough with all the classical features of Champagne. There are tiny bubbles, a lacy froth, nutty/singed toast complexity and subtle fruit that extend to a finish that is dry as a cracker. Freshly-shucked oysters with this.
