$ Sol de Mayo 2008 Malbec (Arg)

$12.99 single This wine boasts ripe plummy fruit and clove spice dressed up in a big round soft package with a dry balancing finish. An Argentinean would probably eat a half a cow with a bottle of this red, you’ll probably settle for a T-bone. Sensational value and screw capped.

$ Redbank 2010 Sunday Morning Pinot Gris

each in 2 bottle purchase

Deutz Marlborough Cuvée NV Brut

each in 2 bottle purchase

$17.99 single Pinot gris is a masochist, it loves cold weather and the King Valley, high in NE Victoria, has plenty of that. This youthful Valley wine is an attractive green/ straw in colour and is redolent of ripe pear, has a light textural palate with a smidge of sugar and satisfactory acid on closure.

1899

This has it all, attractive packaging, bright straw colour, lots of bubble, lifted biscuity bouquet, fresh long dry cleansing palate and the price is pretty good as well. With a helping hand from Champagne Deutz in France, this has become one of the dependable quality sparklers of NZ.

Popular variety in Australia and this Adelaide Hills wine has the often-seen freshly-poached pear and apple varietal characters and then a little sugar is there to give mouthfeel and balance. The acid is soft and this means drinksoon. Do just that.

$ Wynns 2010 “The Siding” Cabernet Sauvignon

each in 2 bottle purchase

$19.99 single From the world-renowned Coonawarra Estate, this green label is designed as an earlier drinking cabernet than the famous long living Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon. It still has the regional traits of mint, brambly blackberry and fine acidity. Enjoy in the next four years.

$ Edwards 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

each in 2 bottle purchase

$27.99 single

Open and allow to breathe for a while and then appreciate the ripe plum, toasty oak and dusty maturity of a solid estate-grown McLaren Vale shiraz from a very good SA vintage. It’s not overloaded with sweet oak and has a savoury lift which is conducive to food, especially aged beef.

Here’s a small producer on Caves Road in Margaret River to keep an eye on. This cabernet is a medium-weighted red with finely tuned tannins, subtle oak, black olive fruit characters and some regional eucalypt leafiness. An elegant modern style of red with fine length of flavour.
