How can we support you to develop your potential and enable you to perform to the best of your ability? 12

Orientation and Induction Orientation and Induction provide support to new members of staff when starting their new role and integrate them into their team and working life at the University. It is imperative that new members of staff receive a thorough orientation and induction, both at a university and department level so that they feel engaged with the university and their work and feel they are making a contribution to the University and feel valued as a new member of staff. Orientation and Induction at the University is made up of three main elements: • Online Orientation: This is carried out by the member of staff and their line manager during the new member of staff’s probationary period. The online orientation contains a number of questions that new starters should be able to answer relating to their new role, department and the wider university. The Online Orientation is accessed via MyHR. Further details can be found here. • Online Welcome: This includes Welcome videos from the Vice Chancellor and other key members of university staff and provides new starters with important information relating to the University’s history, current strategy, the Mission, Vision and Core Values, along with information about staff responsibilities in relation to Health and Safety, Data Protection and Sustainability. The Online Welcome videos can be found here. • Welcome Event: The Welcome Event takes place three times a year and is an opportunity to meet key members of university staff, find out useful information about the University, meet and network with other new members of staff from across the university. Details of the Welcome Events are published on Portal and sent to new starters via email. In addition, a People Managers’ Orientation Guide is available for those members of staff who are starting a People Management role. The People Managers Orientation Guide is designed to provide newly appointed people manager’s with essential knowledge and skills needed to successfully lead and manage their team.

13

The guide is intended to do two things: 1. To provide a comprehensive framework to support and develop people managers as they acclimatise and settle into their new roles; this framework is suitable for existing members of staff who may have been appointed to a role with responsibilities for managing and leading others for the first time and for manager’s who are new to the University of Chester. 2. To act as a key point of reference at any point in time. The People Managers Orientation Guide can be found here.

Probationary Reviews The University believes that its staff is its most valuable resource and aims to provide appropriate support and development to enable staff to perform effectively in their roles. The probationary process is essential in ensuring that newly appointed staff receive appropriate training and support to assist them in becoming effective members of the University. The probationary review process applies to all staff who are new to the University or who have been appointed to new substantive post. Further information on the Probation Process and the online probationary review system can be found here.

Performance and Development Planning (PDP) The PDP process aims to ensure all members of university staff have the ability to achieve their objectives and support the achievement of the University’s goals, as set out in the University strategy and interpreted locally in Faculty/Department business plans. The PDP process also identifies any training and development needs that could improve current performance or would prepare employees for future roles within the University. It is also a time to discuss realistic career aspirations and the opportunities that exist. PDP meetings are carried out on

14

an annual basis between the member of staff and their line manager. The information contained in the remainder of this guide regarding development opportunities available to members of staff can be used to guide the discussion about training and development. Further information about the PDP process can be found here.

Courses and Workshops The L&OD team publish an annual Learning Calendar which provides a list of all of the courses and workshops that will be running during the academic year. These workshops are open to all members of university staff and cover a range of topics such as Assertiveness, Resilience, Leadership, Change, Customer Service and many more. The content of the Learning Calendar is informed by training needs identified during the PDP process. If there is a workshop that you would like to see included in the Learning Calendar, please email the team at trainingenquiries@chester.ac.uk The Learning Calendar can be found here.

On-the-Job Learning On the job development can be just as valuable as attending a course or workshop and is often a more cost-effective method of meeting a specific development need. Studies have shown that most learning takes place whilst working on a task/project or on-the-job through real time exposure to different situations; the minority of learning therefore takes place through other off-the-job learning interventions. The L&OD team have developed an On-the-job Development Toolkit to support you to maximise your on-the-job learning and enhance your own development. The Toolkit is available here. Job Shadowing and Secondments are also options for on-the-job development. The L&OD team are currently working on procedures for these.

19

Self-audit Tools Within the Competency Framework and Self-Assessment Toolkit you will find various tools aimed at helping you manage your own learning and development by allowing you to reflect on particular competences and identify areas where you would like to develop further. The Competency Framework and Self-Assessment Toolkit can be found here.

Managing Your Career Guide There are many resources available to support your career development at the University. The Managing Your Career Guide has been developed to provide a range of information and guidance to support your career at the University, whether you wish to stay in your current role or apply for promotion and progress your career. The guide can be found here.

Coaching Coaching is a form of learning, where a person - a coach - supports someone else - a coachee - to create learning and self-development in a way that benefits them. People enlist the services of a coach because they want to improve their circumstances and achieve goals. They want to learn new ways of thinking and approaching situations, in order to obtain better results. Common goals might be being more organised and effective at work, gaining confidence in certain situations, progressing in their career or simply relating to other people more effectively. A skilled coach uses a combination of observation, questioning, listening and feedback to create a conversation rich in insight and learning. For the coachee, they will experience a focus and attention that enables them to develop a greater awareness and appreciation of their own circumstances. In addition, they’ll also gain satisfaction from creating new ways to resolve issues, produce better results and generally achieve their goals more easily.

20

The University has a number of trained coaches who can support you to meet your objectives and develop your skills. Further information on coaching can be found here. In addition, if you have had coaching training yourself or coach members of your team, the L&OD team can also offer coaching supervision to support your development as a coach and help you enhance your coaching skills. For further information please email trainingenquiries@chester.ac.uk

Mentoring Mentoring is an effective way of transferring knowledge, skills and thinking from a more experienced member of staff to an individual who may be new to the University, newly appointed to their role or in support of their career development. Mentoring is also an aid to help individuals understand formal and informal structures of the University, to enable professional and personal networks and to provide an opportunity for staff to reflect upon their own progress. Mentoring in the workplace traditionally has tended to describe a relationship in which a more experienced colleague uses their greater knowledge and understanding of the work or workplace to support the development of less experienced member of staff; a process which facilitates the transmission of knowledge, skills and experience in a supportive environment. Further information on the University’s mentoring schemes can be found here.

21

Learning in the Flow of Work Learning in the flow of work can be described as ‘learning accessible during work in the workplace environment’. It can also mean ‘learning in the moment’ or learning undertaken without any disruption to work activity. The L&OD team are working on creating a range of resources which can be accessing in the flow of work to meet staff development needs.
