mentorship can often be a crucial component of a woman’s career path and journey through life. With that in mind, here are three reasons why more women need to mentor each other. Shared experiences and comradery There are a variety of experiences that are unique to women. As such, it is important to build and foster relationships with other women who have endured similar situations in their professional and personal lives. By building connections of this nature, a sense of community and comradery is reinforced. It is important to keep in mind that this fellowship can not only assist women in times of hardship, but it can also help them relish in their successes. Networking Establishing a community of colleagues and cohorts of the same sex can not only benefit a woman from a personal perspective, but it can also be advantageous on the professional front. Creating a network of contacts can help women find employment, pursue new career paths, and advance in their current jobs. If someone is new to the area or has recently been promoted to a different position, making the effort to bond with fellow female co-workers could prove to be crucial to succeeding in that new role. These cohorts could provide tips on how the company or organization operates, which roles different individuals occupy, what pitfalls to avoid, offer guidance on how to navigate office politics, and many other pieces of useful advice. In short, networking is a great way to make friends and get ahead professionally. Address sensitive issues and offer guidance While there have been changes in many areas, numerous women still encounter a myriad of sensitive issues, such as sexual harassment, gender inequality, pay disparity, discrimination based on race, religion, socioeconomic status, etc., that those female mentors could relate to and advise their same-sex colleagues on how to navigate as well as overcome. It is so important for more women to step forward and take an active role in fostering mentorship as well as the development of a femalecentric community as a support system.
