Deco Echo is based around the revival of the 20s and 30s fashions, based around the glamorous skirts and dresses, with an overall very feminine look to it. This collection has been designed with the current economic situation in mind as it is very similar to what happened in the 1930s and also bearing Summer 13s release of The Great Gatsby as a way of inspiring people to want to live like they were in the 20s. Throughout this portfolio I will show my research progress, from the early macro trend stages right through to the final capsule collection.

UK The Great Depression of 1929-32 broke out at a time when the United Kingdom was still far from having recovered from the effects of the First World War. Economic output fell by 25% between 1918 and 1921 and did not recover until the end of the Great Depression. It was the industrial and mining areas in the North of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that were hit the hardest. Unemployment reached 70% in some areas at the start of the 1930s (with more than 3 million out of work nationally) and many families depended entirely on payments from local government known as the dole. Politically had consequences of the Labour party struggling and the Conservative party dominating England.

Recession and Unemployment 2013 “Data released this week by the Commerce Department waved bright red recession flags—orders for durable goods fell 13.2% in August and inflation-adjusted personal income fell 0.3%. President Obama is asking for more time to allow the lackluster recovery to pick up steam. His plan is to move the economy “forward” by keeping the current policy framework in place and adding higher tax rates on income and capital gains. But the new Commerce Department numbers, combined with his stay-the-course approach, point to recession in 2013.” - The Wall Street Journal, September 28, 2012 “The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is projecting that if changes in federal taxing-and-spending policies already enacted and set to take effect at the beginning of next year (2013) do in fact take place, the unemployment rate will climb to 9.1 percent.” - CNS News - September 6, 2012 “U.S. growth has slowed to 1.3%. Greece and Spain are in recession and China’s economy has lost momentum for seven consecutive quarters and is now growing at 7.4%. At the same time stocks continue to rally and the S&P 500 Index (GSPC) is trading near its year-to-date high. Gary Shilling, whose firm analyzes the global economy and manages money, says “massive deleveraging” is the source of the slowdown in the global economy. It began three years ago and will likely continue for another five to seven years, driving the global economy into recession in 2013, Shilling says.” - Yahoo Finance - October 18,

2000s 2
Overall things are looking quite similar to the financial and employment situation during The Great Depression. In 2013 things are starting to look more optimistic in the UK even if only slightly. Just as in the 20s and 30s, we now have to be optimistic and look for escapism ideas for us to not be brought down by the current economical climate. Whether this is through fashion, films or other creative methods, we can definitely take a leaf out of the people of the 30’s books and look for ways to raise the mood during this bleak time.
During these harder times we have seen a huge growth in the UK of people becoming thriftier, doing DIY and being more creative. You can find an abundance of thrifty and DIY blogs giving inspiration for creating your own clothes, decorating your house, pretty much anything you could imagine! This overall idea of creativity has sparked quite a quirky side to the UK, with vintage also becoming hugely popular. Who says the recession means you can’t still look good?

Traditional Style/Icons
1920s/1930s Despite things that were going on in the economy during the 20s and 30s, women did not dress blandly or negatively. Instead it was all about the glamour and showing a optimistic take on things through their style. It was the 1920’s that Madeleine Vionnet took the fashion world by storm with her evolutionary bias cut, using materials such as silk and chiffon, making the fabrics cling and then hang off the wearer in a flattering way. It was also in the 1920s that Coco Chanel ‘discovered’ sunbathing making it all of a sudden a very ‘fashionable’ thing to do, sparking plenty of backless dresses. You can see a lot of midi and maxi lengths, as well as plenty of drop waists. The overall look is still very feminine and very ladylike.
The silky look of the lingerie above could be a huge influence for the trend as it looks very glamorous and luxurious which will be a key feature in the trend.
Women that shaped the trends: Coco Chanel, Bee Jackson, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard

The 1920s was a big decade for Hollywood and worldwide filmmaking as it began concentrating on longer feature length films rather than short movies. More importantly it was between 1926-27 that the ‘talkies’ evolved, when film companies began to try synchronizing sound onto their films. The 1930s is also said to be the ‘golden years’ of Hollywood, which lasted through to the 40s. With the economical problems happening worldwide and The Great Depression, films were a place for people to escape this worry and this saw a huge rise in the popularity of fantasy films at this time.
Film Inspiration
1920s/1930s
The Jazz Singer (1927)
The 2013 release of The Great Gatsby has been greatly anticipated, especially after the release date got pushed even further forward from 2012 to 2013. The release of this film may spark large amounts of interest in this 1920s era, from the lifestyle to the fashion choices made.
King Kong (1933)
Scarface (1932)
The Artist (2011) was something competely different for the year it was released, amongst all the other blockbusters of the time. Despite it being a black and white silent movie, the film (set in Hollywood 1927-32) was massively popular, again showing more inspiration for the 20s and 30s.

Street Style
1920s/1930s
Accessories When looking at how the modern girl takes on the 1920s/30s look with street style pictures we can see how it is not the entire look that they adopt but more one key element of the overall look. For example in the picture above, the woman has chosen a pleated mid length skirt which we can associate with this look. Another popular choice of this style that women choose is the typical 1920s cloche hat or similar headwear. This is then updated with a modern take on the rest of their outfit. By choosing even just one item of clothing that links to the 20s/30s women can still embody these eras, but manage to create a more wearable, watered-down version of the original trend. This will be taken into consideration when deciding what the trend shall look like as the trend needs to be wearable and not too ‘out there’ that women would not wear the clothes on a day to day basis. Each piece from the collection will focus on one part of it on the 20s/30s for example the length and detail of a skirt, an accessory, or embellishment for a more evening wear look.
7
Shapes and Lengths
1920s/1930s
“Fashion fades, only style remains the same - Coco Chanel
The focus of this trend will be on the midi length rather than maxi length, focusing on detailed hemlines such as the ones above, keeping this look predominantly for daytime. The midi length is quite a fresh look for spring/summer, especially when the material is quite loose and flowing. For evening dresses the focus may fall on the drop waist feature, which were particularly popular during the 20s and 30s. Creating shorter lengths for evening looks may be another alternative to modernising this look.
For tops the pussybow blouse idea could be an idea, especially in thin, luxurious fabrics such as a silk/satin as in the example above. The bow detail looks good with or without sleeves which will be variable throughout the collection to make the looks appropriate for a spring/summer trend. As mentioned previously a lot of 1920s and 30s outfits featured a lot of backless items, which would be a nice touch to evening wear. The overall fit of clothes during this period is quite loose and flowing, with little to no fitted garments. To make this look seem more adaptable to a modern wearer, the collection will have items that are versatile so that the wearer could pair loose skirts with more fitted tops/blouses, rather than one shape from top to bottom. Again this makes the trend more fitting for the current day. The necklines are normally kept quite high or a modest V neck (like the image to the right). For daytime looks, the hemlines will be kept around the knee however the necklines could be dropped slightly, again to add a modern twist to the look. For evening looks, shorter dresses will stick with the traditional necklines to keep the modest style of the 20s and 30s.

Art Inspiration
1920s/1930s Art Deco
Art deco was the art movement that originated in Paris in the 1920s. Towards the 30s and 40s the movement went international and has become of the most well known art movements in history. Art deco derived from its predecessor movement, art nouveau, but swapping nouveau’s pastel colours and flowing shapes for black and chrome with harder materials. The style of art deco is often summarised with rich colours and geometric shapes. Even today this style is still played upon and is seen as a very glamorous and luxurious look. Art deco was represented through many different mediums from fashion and furniture to interior design to architecture. Probably one of the most famous examples of art deco in architecture is the globally famous Chrysler Building in New York. Hollywood became massively influential in art deco with the glamorous part of cinema filtering through into art deco’s design with shiny materials, carefully designed mirrors and lighting. When looking at art deco design, the prints were very angular, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s cubism era, with a lot of shapes such as triangles, zig zags and lightening bolts featuring often throughout the design. With fashion, art deco was hugely played on with jewellery. A lot of the necklaces and earrings featured very angular shapes.
Cubism
Cubism emerged in the early 1920s and was an avant-garde art movement begun and developed by the artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Their work was very geometric, often featuring their perception of images from different angles on top of each other to give a very angular creating a whole new visual language for artists.
9
Coco Chanel
As already mentioned earlier, Coco Chanel was a huge pioneer in the 1920s fashion and is probably one of the most famous fashion designers to date. It is said that Chanel made black ‘fashionable’ as before she began designing as black was not considered fashionable before this. I think this is very evident in the whole of the 20s and 30s fashion, especially if we look at the dark colours used in the art deco movement.
Designers of the 20s and 30s
1920s/1930s Elsa Schiaparelli
Classed as one of Chanel’s biggest rivals Italian designer Schiaparelli was one of the most influential designers of the 1920s-30s. Her fame began with a knitwear collection which she then evolved to create an entire range of outfits from sportswear to evening wear. Schiaparelli was seen as one of the first most innovative designers using her designs as a way to express her unique ideas.
Madeleine Vionnet
As previously mentioned Mme Vionnet was the creator of one of the most famous dress cuts to date: the bias cut.
10
As one of the main inspirations and reasoning behind this trend is optimism, the mood of this trend should reflect this optimism, which can be represented with lighter, softer colours for daytime looks but still sticking with darker colours for details and evening wear to stick with the original theme of the 1920s/30s and the art deco inspired ideas. With the base palette, the colours will be toned down as these are the main style of colours and in the 20s and 30s the colours were very understated and neutral. The base palette will feature a variation of summery colours with nude tones.
Base Palette
PANTONE Cream Pink 11-1306 TPX
PANTONE Cameo Brown 161516 TCX
PANTONE Gray Lilac 13-3804 TPX
PANTONE Harbor Gray 144908 TPX
Spring Accents
PANTONE Coral Pink 14-1318 TCX
In this chosen era they dressed very optimistic as a way of forgetting about the things that were going on the economy, which is why this trend features colours that give the impression of luxury, for example nude. The spring accents will only be slightly brighter colours than in the base palette, as the high summer accents would be brighter still so these couldn’t be too loud.
PANTONE Orchid Pink 13-2010 TPX
As the 20s and 30s weren’t really big with prints but more embellishments, there isn’t a wide variety of colours because the overall look will be very understated and keeping with the era but these colours still added a spring/summer feel.
PANTONE Purple Heather 143911 TPX

PANTONE Strawberry Cream 13-2005 TCX
Colours and Moods
1920s/1930s
PANTONE Aqua Green 15-5421 TCX
The summer accents could not go as bright as other trends would, as this does not feature within the original trend however adding brighter colours will make the collection fit with the optimistic feel again, and they are still quite classic summery colours with nothing too outrageous. PANTONE Lilac Chiffon 15-2913 TPX
PANTONE Peacock Blue 16-4728 TCX
Adding these colours into the collection will give it it’s own modern twist, updating the look from the original 1920s and 30s.
11
Fabrics
For patterns and embellishent, the focus will be on beading and jewel embellishment (especially for evening wear). The top image to the right is in an art deco style, which is how any detail on daytime items will be. For daytime the collection will be more about the fabrics and the detailing in them rather than prints and beading to stick with the original theme of the 20s and 30s. For evening wear the embellishment and detailing to be the main focus of the pieces and will use beading and jewel embellishment to achieve this like the bottom two images to the right. Using detailing like will give the collection a more expensive feel which is key for this trend given that the mood has to be optimistic towards the economic climate.
Textiles, Embellishment and Mood
1920s/1930s
For fabrics again the focus is more on fabrics that have a luxurious and glamorous feel and look to them, not only to mirror the glamour of the 20s but also again for the optimism part of this trend as by making the outfits look more luxurious and expensive, it makes it seem like there is no problem with the economy which almost touches into the escapism part of this trend. The trend will use flowy fabrics such as silks/ satins and chiffons as they can be made to hang in flattering ways as Vionnet created.

For the daytime pieces of this collection the main focus is the way that the material makes shapes for each piece. As it is a spring/summer collection the fabrics will predominately be chiffons/silks and shirt style materials to give a floaty feel. For the day dress and skirt, the pleats will be the focus. For the dress it will feature the classic 1920s drop waist and will be versatile enough for it to be a casual look or be able to be dressed up for work. The smart daytime shirt will not have sleeves and will focus on the pussybow detail and will be in a silk/satin fabric so that it will flatter the figure nicely. There will be a flared style of trouser, almost palazzo style, as the 20s and 30s began to show women’s trousers in this style but will feature a moderately high waist to give it a modern twist. The jacket shown has been made to be able to wear with any piece just as a thin cover up for spring/summer.

Tops
Accessories For evening wear the collection is all about glamour with lots of embellishment, fringing and beading. Evening wear will predominantly be nude/neutral colours that are wearable with everything but again the embellishment will add the glamour to the outfits.
PANTONE Peacock Blue 16-4728 TCX
PANTONE Lilac Chiffon 15-2913 TPX
This bikini will feature the classic 20s/30s high waist detail with a bralet style top. It will be available in the two colours shown giving buyers the option to mix and match.
Swimwear
The dresses will be traditional 20/30s style with one longer, drop waist dress and the other two slightly shorter but still with elements of the 20s and 30s to give the trend a modern twist. The necklines will be kept reasonably high as shown in the example in the top left corner. The skirt above is a perfect example of how the skirt in the trend will look like, with fringing but metallics to add modern day glamour. The top will be simple to make it more wearable but the detailed beading at the bottom will stop it looking like a basic top. The bolero style jacket is the alternative to a heavy jacket and is an option to wear on an evening or a night out.
Deco Echo Capsule Collection Spring/Summer 13

14
To adapt Deco Echo to a high street brand such as New Look, the trend would have to be watered down to make it more wearable and easier to piece together. The outfits would be a lot plainer featuring less embellishment and beading as a high street store’s budget is not going to be as big as a designer’s budget and so the detail would not be as well made, so to keep the quality high it would be simpler just to focus on shapes rather than detail. Jersey would be a main fabric as it is less upmarket rather than fabrics such as silk and chiffon. Accessories would be important for a high street interpretation of Deco Echo as it is easier for someone to adopt a trend by donning a accessory rather than a whole outfit.
If a top end designer such as Stella McCartney were to interpret Deco Echo, the embellishments and detail would be a lot more intricate, as they have the budget to hand make things which would make the pieces more luxurious. The embellishments could be made from more expensive materials such as crystals to really make the pieces seem exclusive. As designer outfits can be slightly more adventurous, the hemlines could feature asymmetric drops and floor length drops to make the dresses more eye-catching. For the daytime the shirts would be made from the best quality materials such as silks and satins, which would again give a more luxurious and expensive feel to the collection.

Basic Colour Palette Example
The autumn/winter collection will feature a lot more embellishment, beading, glitter and detail, especially for evening/party wear. The colours will remain to stay quite plain and simple, just like darker versions of the spring/summer palette, featuring a lot of dark greys and purples and blacks but still keeping the traditional 20s/30s nude colours. The shapes will stay quite similar with regards to the pussybow blouse and the style of party dress. Jacket-wise there will be an evening jacket with embellishment – perfect for the Christmas season and then for the daytime the collection will feature a classic fur coat.
