Preface
Another Borderland Isle of Grain with Formosa
Abstract
Another borderland is a project of temporal poetry, swinging between the coastline of the UK, the Isle of Grain and my hometown, Formosa by a stream of consciousness. Another means different, borderland as a blurred area between two. The project aims at exploring the liminal space in the borderland of the UK, Taiwan, the tidal zone and my consciousness. The book focuses on the dynamic relationship between two sites by illustrating scenes between Formosa and Grain, and high tide and low tide and different languages. The in-between movement reflects the fluidity of how Grain and I ingrain one another. The narration of Grain is constructed by roaming among its enormous earthwork landscape from the perspective of a Flaneur. The coastline scenarios as marks on the wall triggering memories of Taiwan expose the connection between the two sites. By repeatedly sewing the description of tidal movement between the poems of Grain and Formosa, it reflects the stream of consciousness and how I ingrain myself and readers into the temporal situation of Grain. I intend to provoke the idea of what landscape of memory will be left in the faded frontline by constructing temporal subjective narrations between the edged land of England and Taiwan. The poetry also expresses the second battleground of memory in the specific disappearing frontier by sewing personal remembrance. By extracting the contexture from Grain - the natural phenomenon of the rising tide and various faded earthworks, I intend to endow the land as a dweller layering every incident by her body and how humans mark the landscape from the god perspective of view.
The heartbreaking beauty of the faded military landscape is a vehicle to evoke the notion of borders by triggering the remembrance of my hometown. The poems about Taiwan are based on histories in a different period to discuss our blurred position and the absolute borderline in the nation. It is constructed by diverse languages, such as Chinese, Taiwanese and Formosan to reflect the controversy of Taiwan’s belonging through the ages. The image texts become another narration, which relates to the contents and creates a liminal space in interpretation as performative writing. The relation between poems and still images, pages and pages also lead to a flux in the liminal space of the artist book. Through unfolding and folding text layers, I intend to draw the audiences into the situ of absence and trigger their instant remembrance into a third space.

Taking the artist book as a land dweller, therefore, pages will be covered, revealed between one and another. The narration of Grain in English is constructed from the perspective of a Flaneur with the remembrance of Formosa in Chinese. The narration related to the tidal zone is described in three different languages, Chinese, English and Taiwanese, which symbolises the in-between situation as Taiwan. The mobilisation in languages as movement between high tide and low tide illustrates a liminal space. Languages are organised back and forth, based on different locations and situations. Different layers in languages are folded as multiexposure, switching between underneath, forth and inbetween. By setting up autoplay mode, the time limitation of reading reflects the temporality of the site, related to the rising and falling tide, which simulates the situ of eroding by waves.

There used to be two suns in the sky, Taking turns in charge of day and night. However, there was no coordination about who was responsible for day or night, They were up in the sky together accidentally one day. Rivers dried up, The land became barren, Children died. The Bunun made a plan to shoot out a sun, The two tribes agreed to go together to shoot the sun in a higher mountain. After a long and hard fight, One of the suns was shot into the eyes, Which later became A moon.
The poetic but cruel myth, makes me think of the position between Taiwan and China, Unlike the frontline of the United Kingdom, We are still in the balance of terror with China. War never ends. A situation between a present or future tense. Another conquering for being the only sun, If we have a chance to show up together In the same bright sky. Or one of us will be Denied, shot down and erased. And who will be the hunter?

Discription of Site
As a coastwise part of the peninsula, the Isle of Grain expresses the idea of protection with a large-scale military landscape. Military ramparts, separated in various locations in the conjunction of the River Medway and Thames. A marshland grazing and arable farming shaped its temporal landscape of fleets and ditches, counter walls and reclaimed pasture. Military protection was changed into permanent infrastructures in the 19th century, such as batteries, forts, coastguard station, seaplane base, etc. Grain was transformed into industrial districts after Work War II, such as oil refinery, power station and transport industries. Through different developments, the landscape of Grain ends up being formed by earthworks and enigmatic remains.
Isle of Grain
A once military landscape is covered by industrial construction. Remnants have become defamiliarized objects in the field of Grain, which exposes the problem of the military landscape nowadays. As an abandoned field, instead of merely seeing the site as a carriage with memories, the lost-land of the frontline could be transformed into a vehicle that talks about other frontlines. As an endless brownfield, Grain also exposes environment issue, which results from the excessed development and recession of the military and energy industry.
