Straight Horizontal When using lines such as these, it can bring firmness to a room. In many cases it can bring ones eyes around a room as they follow the horizontal line. http://portlandremodel.com/the-help-meister/3-small-bathroom-remodels/
These rooms are perfect examples. Had they not had horizontal lines, your eyes would stop when looking at a solid wall color. The lines in these rooms make them look longer.
http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/06/walking-the-line/
BATHROOM Beauty
Straight Vertical Incorporating vertical lines in a room can either create an illusion of height or emphasis the overall height of a room. This is because your eyes follow the lines upward. These lines also bring a sense of strength or dignity.
http://livinglivelier.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
In this room, the over all height of the room is rather short. By using these vertical lines, the room appears to be much taller because your eyes are being drawn upwards.
BATHROOM Beauty
Curved Flowing Unlike straight lines, curved lines are more graceful. They are more soft and create comfort and relaxation. They give a unique look to rooms because of their intricate path. The sinks above and the wall pattern below show fun and free flowing a design can be. It brings a calming sense to those in the area. http://blog.homestars.com/archives/2011/08/ 25/unique-sinks-and-other-bathroom-fixtures/

Non Reflective In non reflective surfaces, little to no light is reflected off of it. These surfaces are usually rough or dull. You can see in the rock wall and tiled floor that there is light being shown on the surface, but there is no light being given off.
http://boldinteriordesigns.blogspot.com/2012_07_23_archive.html
BATHROOM Beauty
Reflective It can be very beneficial to use reflective surfaces in a room. They allow light to travel through and give transparency in a space. When they are not transparent, they can give off light to make a room look brighter.

Implied Texture Implied texture can add a lot of character to a room. It brings in an interesting look to a room, while keeping a smooth surface. The sink below has implied texture in its grains of different color. Although it has an even face.

Task
Task lighting is extremely common in bathrooms. In many and most bathrooms, there is lighting by the mirror. This is because they need to have appropriate lighting in order to properly see themselves.
BATHROOM Beauty
Natural It is beneficial to interior spaces to bring in natural light. It produces a different atmospheric feel than artificial light; which in most cases is more comfortable. Not to mention how much more energy you can be saving!
BATHROOM Beauty
Track
Track lighting can my very helpful in rooms. Although they are usually in a straight line, the frame holding the bulb is able to be turn. This allows you to change the highlight of a specific area in a room whenever desirable. http://www.houzz.com/photos/1432506/George-Kovacs-EtchedGlass-Bronze-5-Light-Rail-Track-Kit-traditional-track-lighting-

Monochromatic A single hue creates a monochromatic color scheme. The range of values is what creates a difference in the colors but also keeping unity.

http://bailey-company.com/2013/10/24/bathroom-tile-ideas/
Creates a relaxed feeling by having the same color but different shades!
BATHROOM Beauty
Direct Complementary This is the least complex of the contrasting color schemes. The way to include this in a room is by taking any two colors that are placed opposite of one another on the color wheel.
The light green dots are a direct complementary color to the pink ceiling.

Neutral Palette
http://www.architecturaldigest.com/decor/2012-09/inspiring-bathrooms-archives-slideshow
Neutral palettes are sometimes mistaken to be “boring. However, they can be very elegant and peaceful. Many of the colors used are shades one would find in nature. This is what brings a relaxed and effortless feeling to these spaces.

Positive Space Positive spaces are areas of interest or the subject in a room. When designing the space of the room, it is beneficial to keep a balance between positive and negative space. An example is the room below. It has an open area, which is negative space, but then has positive space where the cylindrical tables are and the plant on the counter top.

BATHROOM Beauty
Negative Space
http://www.chictip.com/design-tips/modern-bathroom-design-ideas
This is also referred to as white space. This does not necessarily mean that the space must be white. The reason it is called negative space is because it has no content. These rooms show that there are few substances in the rooms, which produces negative space.

Crowding Territoriality Crowding in most cases refers to someone’s perception of a space. In many circumstances it is a public area where it tends to be busy. This can be in either a large or small area.

http://www.bhg.com/bathroom/small/long-narrow-bath-spaces/
Territoriality is one’s sense of ownership. This could be a single item, an entire room, or a location. It is something they feel close to and perceive as a possession. http://www.bhg.com/bathroom/small/solutions/

Abstract When using abstract shapes in a room, they can bring interest along with flow. There are endless possibilities when it comes to abstract design!

Geometric We see geometric design everyday, whether we notice it or not. Think about the square tiling of a bathroom, rectangular wood flooring in a dining room, or a circular mirror hanging in a bedroom. All of these are examples of geometric design. One can incorporate these shapes in order to create unity or variety in any given room.

Dynamic Dynamic shapes are designed in a way to lead the eye to produce a sense of movement. They can make a room or object very custom.

Similarly to abstract shape, abstract form also gives a room interest. The difference between the two is that form has depth. In the bathroom shown above, one can articulate that on the right there is a bathtub. Although it does not have the shape of a “typical bathtub, its abstract form allows one to recognize what it is while having it be a unique form.

Geometric Geometric forms are everywhere whether we pay attention to them or not! Many furniture pieces are a geometric form; such as, a table, a clock, a shelve, the list goes on. One can even think of geometric form as an entire building. These forms often are seen for having strength and purpose.
BATHROOM Beauty
Natural
Natural forms are often times inspired from nature or are a part of nature. This meaning that they often times have an organic look to them that resembles nature if they are not physically from the environment.

BATHROOM Beauty
Visual Symmetry The placement of objects are identical to one another over a so called “imaginary line is visual symmetry.
http://www.trendir.com/house-design/custom-details-create-a-visual-feast-in-minimalist-home.html
In the room above, one can see that either side of the bathroom is equivalent to the other side. This brings balance and unity to the room.
BATHROOM Beauty
Visual Asymmetry This type of symmetry is more relaxed. It may require more thought on how to construct it in a room; although, once it is done it is aesthetic to the space.

BATHROOM Beauty
Visual Radial Symmetry For radial symmetry, elements in the design branch out from a central piece or point.
Radial balance can bring either a peaceful feel or dynamic feel to a room depending on how it is used.
http://www.pinterest.com/katpk/radial/
BATHROOM Beauty
Structural Symmetry When trying to develop structural symmetry, it is done on purpose with careful thought. One must define a shape and recreate it to provide balance. The sinks on the right show an example of this. The designer had to make sure that the mirrors and sinks were aligned in the correct way in order to achieve structural symmetry. Or similar to bricks, as they can be extremely supportive and provide a balanced appearance http://imactoy.com/tag/japanese-garden-house/

Harmony http://panda3154.wordpress.com/2008/10/
BATHROOM Beauty
Unity through Line When developing unity by lines, the lines will in most cases run the same way. This meaning that they are parallel. In other designs they may be perpendicular. The white wooden panels that go along the wall show unity.
BATHROOM Beauty
Unity through Color
http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/10545716/list/Strategiesto-Create-Color-Flow-Throughout-a-Home-----a-Case-Study
Blue is beautifully incorporated in this bathroom. There is an excellent amount of the color to give a sense of harmony, rather than chaos.
BATHROOM Beauty
Unity through Repetition Unity doesn’t just have to be lines. It can consist of patterns, shapes, and styles. By repeating these, a room gains unity from the flow that is produced.
The repeated circles on the walls combine to add a sense of unity.
BATHROOM Beauty
Variety through Furniture Most people over look furniture when it comes to variety. They purchase chairs that are the same color or vases that are the same shape. What people sometimes forget is how fun you can make a room by mixing it up a little bit!

Variety through Color When combining different colors to add variety to a room, the room can become more fun. In many designs, the space can also become abstract.

Variety through Modern in Contrast to Old By combining modern and old furnishings, you can create a room that is one of a kind. This makes a room look very unique. It might even leave some in awe!

Emphasis
http://enchantingkerala.org/digital-photographyschool/using-focal-points-in-photography.php
BATHROOM Beauty
Visual Focal Point
http://www.home-designing.com/2011/02/modern-bathrooms-designs-ideas-pictures
The main reason for a focal point is to a persons eye to that object when they enter the room. It should be of importance to its surroundings. In many cases it will stand out in either color, shape, or style.
The lime green furnishings in this room are the focal points. This is because of their contrasting color compared to the light gray hue used in the rest of the room.
BATHROOM Beauty
Structural Focal Point In this bathroom the focal point is the stone accent on the right wall. Its difference in color and shape bring interest to it. This in turn draws the eye toward it, making it a focal point.
http://www.stylemg.com/Style/February-2012/ExtremeMakeover/index.php?cparticle=5&siarticle=4
Structural focal points are found more in actual building structures; rather than objects.
BATHROOM Beauty
Massing
https://svpply.com/item/706986/Anon_Pairot_cell_chair_2006__Ma
BATHROOM Beauty
Actual Density With actual density in massing, an object not only has physical density, but also looks physically dense. Granite is a perfect example of actual density. In this picture you can see the thickness and solidity of the counter top. And for those who are familiar with granite, they are aware of its heavy weight.
http://www.houzz.com/photos/1699102/Yellow-River-Granite---Bathrooms-traditional-kitchen-dc-metro
BATHROOM Beauty
Optical Density
Optical takes a different approach then structural in the terms of massing. With this kind of density, it appears to be taking up space but actually does not. The clear glass door for the shower is an example of this. It cuts off a section of the room and creates its own mass. Although it does not truly take up a lot of room. This can separate a space without taking up too much room!
BATHROOM Beauty
Rhythm
http://www.layoutsparks.com/1/38817/frequency-green-figure-rhythm-31000.html
BATHROOM Beauty
Repetitive This is achieved by repeating lines, colors, patterns, forms, and textures throughout a space.
Bellow, the repetition of tiles produces a harmonious feel down the length of the restroom. The polka pots on the wall also create harmony through their repetition as they go up the wall.
BATHROOM Beauty
Contrast Repetition occurs with contrast because it brings the eye from light to dark. In this room, the contrast in colors is shown between the dark vanity and the light walls, as well as in the tiles.
This can also be done as a contrast in shape or texture, not just color.
BATHROOM Beauty
Climatic With climatic rhythm, one eyes are brought up the length or down the width of something. It creates movement and flow when used.
http://lisadavenportdesigns.blogspot.com/
Molding around the ceiling along with the framing of the mirror bring the eye to the back of the room. While the white pillars bring the eye up the room.
BATHROOM Beauty
Proportion
http://www.next.cc/journey/language/proportion
BATHROOM Beauty
Object in Proportion with Space
http://www.houzz.com/photos/100284/Port-Credit-Townhome-contemporary-bathroom-toronto
Proportion is the comparison of the relative size of parts to a whole. In this bathroom, the parts of the space are proportional to each other. The sink, toilet, and shower are all in appropriate size to one another, as well as the room itself.
BATHROOM Beauty
Object not in Proportion with Space In design, an object can be disproportional to the space around it. It has to do with relative parts of a whole. For example, the object could be too small for a large room or the object could be to large for a small room. http://thingsthatareamerican.com/huge-bathrooms/
Compared to this room, the bath tub is rather large. Its proportions are not to scale because it is not of relative sized to the other objects in the room, such as the sink.
BATHROOM Beauty
Scale http://www.bigstockphoto.com/search/too-fat/
BATHROOM Beauty
Human Scale Human scale has to do with size in relation to people and their surroundings. In creating a room with good human scale, the space will feel comfortable, rather than overwhelmingly small or large. Naturally people measure items in comparison to one’s self.

http://footage.shutterstock.com/clip762994-stock-footage-hands-ingloves-cleansing-wash-basin.html
http://www.fotosearch.com/photosimages/putting-makeup.html
BATHROOM Beauty
Symbolic Scale This type of scale is used to symbolize objects in different ways; such as, a change of color or size.
http://rotatorrodblog.blogspot.com/2013/09/trending-in-bathroom-decor-eye-catching.html
This statue shows symbolic scale. This is because someone who looks at it can depict that it resembles a person, although its coloring, size, and proportion are off from an actual human being.
