5 TOP TIPS DYNAMITE DOG FOR A

Everyone wants the Dog Trainers’ Secrets. Here they are…

By LISA HARTMAN (“LISA THE DOG TRAINER”)

IF THERE’S A short cut, people want it. If a remedy exists, we want the cure. And we want it now. Time and again I am asked what I do with my own dogs: how I train them, live with them, play with them. Well, I practice what I preach. There are no quick fixes, but there are certainly some easy tricks you can focus on to attain the dog of your dreams! (Or att the very least, a dog you can live with!) Here are five quick tips excerpted from my book “DIAL A DYNAMITE DOG”.

South Florida Dog Mag_2019.indd 4

1

PLAY WITH YOUR DOG DAILY. Never

underestimate the power of play. Playing with your dog burns a lot of extra energy, which will be channeled elsewhere if not used. Play is a great stress reliever, not to mention downright fun! Everyone needs a break from the mundane, and time off work to let loose. Most importantly, play builds the bond between you. Instead of just sending your dog to the doggie park, play with him yourself! Games like hide and seek, fetch, tug, teaching tricks and dance routines (“doggy freestyle“) are just some of the ways you can play and connect with your pet. Play also helps to establish you as the kind and benevolent leader, and bearer of all things fun. The more your dog plays with you, the less trouble he is likely to get into.

2

GIVE YOUR DOG TONS OF ATTENTION WHEN HE IS BEING GOOD. By far this is still one of the

most forgotten about and underutilized tricks for a well behaved dog. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and the good wheel goes unnoticed. And so it goes for dogs. Remembering to praise or reward your dog when he is good is extremely necessary. You must give your dog positive feedback when he is being “good”. “Good sit!”, “good boy!”. Generally, this means rewarding him for all the stuff he is not doing . For example, when your dog is sitting quietly on his bed, give him a belly rub (assuming he likes belly rubs). When you greet friends and he is not jumping on them, softly praise him and give him a favorite food reward. When he passes someone one a bicycle and for whatever reason doesn’t lunge for them clap your hands, smile warmly and tell him how good he is (“oh you are such a good boy! Yes you are! Yes you are! Mommy is so proud of you! Treat, treat, treat). If your dog potties outside and you like that praise him! Even older housetrained dogs like to be acknowledged occasionally for eliminating in the right place. You get more of what you focus on. Focus on the positive things your dog does (or doesn’t do) and you will get more of it.

3

IGNORE BEHAVIOR YOU DON’T LIKE. Negative attention is still attention,

so punishment and yelling is its own reward. If you find your dog is always in trouble, than you are not setting her up for

success. For example: If you don’t like your dog begging for food, never feed her while she whines at you or even look at her. Acknowledge a more appropriate behavior instead.

4

THINK IN TERMS OF OPPOSITES.

For every action your dog is doing that you don’t like, there is probably an opposite behavior that you would like. If your dog is jumpy, teach him to sit and reward sitting. If your dog likes to run away, develop a rock solid recall and call him back to you. Then praise and reward like mad when he comes back. If your dog likes to “counter surf” how about filling treat balls with peanut butter cookies or hiding carrots around the house? Pretty soon he will focus more on what you provide for him that is acceptable and less on the counter. There is always something better your dog could be doing. As the leader it is your job to provide an alternative outlet or instruct him to conduct himself a more suitable manner. After all, jumping up, chasing moving objects, scavenging for food, digging, etc, is all natural doggy behavior. If you don’t like it, channel it into another activity or behavior that is more to your liking. Then give him positive feedback for it.

5

MAKE YOUR DOG A SUPER SITTER. It seems so elementary but it

is so true: Dogs who sit more are better behaved. A sitting dog is not knocking people down. A sitting dog is patiently waiting for his supper. Dogs generally bark less when sitting. Sit is the most underused of all commands. Most people ask the dog to sit in the kitchen by the cookie jar for a treat or for their supper, that’s it. But how about a sit as you put your pups leash on for a walk? How about asking that his rear end be patiently planted on the ground before entering a dog park? A “Super Sitter” is especially appreciated when greeting people. Ask all of your friends and passersby not to greet your dog until he is sitting. If your dog thinks that sitting is his key to the kingdom of life, he will start sitting all the time, or “throwing sits”. That is a very good thing! Your job is to acknowledge him and let him know you like that!

Of course there are many other tips and tricks for a well behaved dog, and many of them do

not require you to have and advanced degree in animal learning theory to acquire. You simply need to train your dog a few of the basics, and train yourself to look for the good. With a little consistency and coaching, you too can have a Dynamite Dog!

H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue Partners with GreaterGood.org to Save 83 Dogs from Humane Society of Grand Bahama South Florida Dog Mag_2019.indd 8

AS HURRICANE DORIAN tore his way across

the Bahamas, Jacque Petrone, Executive Director of H.A. L.O. No-Kill Rescue, kept in close contact with Elizabeth “Tip Burrows, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Grand Bahama. The two animal rescue directors have been friends for years and were able to communicate as the massive Category 5 hurricane decimated the islands. Due to the massive storm surge and 220 mph wind gusts, the courageous staff had to be rescued from the shelter during the storm not knowing what they would find when they came back. After Dorian finally moved off of the islands, Ms. Burrows and her staff came back to a nightmare. The loss of life was staggering and they were left with no food, medical supplies or vehicles. Miraculously, over 160 of the animals were still alive. Ms. Burrows reached out to Ms. Petrone for assistance in getting the animals off the island and H.A.L.O. quickly formed a plan to rescue the 83 surviving dogs from the Humane Society of Grand Bahama.

South Florida Dog Mag_2019.indd 9

11/15/19 7:17 PM

GreaterGood.org and their amazing team immediately responded to H.A.L.O.’s call to action and were able to coordinate relief and transportation with assistance from The Animal Disaster Response Coalition for the Bahamas. The rescue flight was funded by Wings of Rescue and International Fund for Animal W elfare and transportation from the Ft. Lauderdale airport was provided by Loving Friends Animal Transport and the Humane Society of Broward County. GreaterGood.org also ensured that the surviving 84 cats and kittens from the Humane Society of Grand Bahama found a home with St Hubert’s Animal Welfare, a no-kill animal shelter in Madison, New Jersey.

To help make room for the “potcakes” coming in, H.A.L.O. launched a “Hurricane Adoption Event” on Wednesday, September 11th, waiving all dog adoption fees through September 14th. Although space will be tight, H.A.L.O. is so happy to be in a position to assist Ms. Burrows and the animals in her shelter during this extremely stressful time. H.A.L.O. plans to continue working alongside GreaterGood.org for long term recovery on the island.

HERO H From apprehending criminals to calming nerves in a crisis, these South Florida Dogs and their owners give us plenty of reasons to thank them for their service. DOG'S NAME: CORBY JOB: Dual Purpose Patrol K9 (Criminal tracking, apprehension, building searches, evidence searching) and Explosives detection. Jupiter PD. AGE: 3 SPECIAL SKILLS: He is an excellent all-around Police K9 and is also a great member of our family when he is at home and not working. FAVORITE FOOD: cheese FAVORITE HOBBIES: Playing ball, being a lap dog, shredding coconuts. PET PEEVE: When I’m sitting on the sofa watching TV and he wants to play but I don’t. BEST FRIEND: Me (Officer Chad Norman) FUN FACTS: Corby knows when it’s time to go to work. If my phone rings during the middle of the night he is jumping up on me before I even get my phone to answer it. Any other time as soon as I go into my closet and pull out any part of clothing specific to my uniform, he starts going crazy running to the front door and jumping on it then running back to me and barking. To say he loves his job is an understatement!

South Florida Dog Mag_2019.indd 16

We’ve assisted in numerous criminal investigations and have completed dozens of explosive searches from routine pre-event sweeps, actual bomb threats and even for visiting dignitaries.

One morning we were called to assist with a burglary to an occupied residence in which two suspects were seen running away on foot. Officers responding locating one suspect, however one was still at large. I arrived and deployed Corby. We had searched for almost an hour in a heavily wooded area and Corby never gave up even though he was getting tired. Just as I was about to call it a day Corby alerted at a thick area of palmetto bushes. He pulled me over to it and went into the bushes and located the suspect hiding.

Another time we were called to help search for a stabbing suspect. As we were searching the apartment complex it was learned that the suspect had left in a car and officers had actually located the car driving. A traffic stop led to the arrest of the offender, however the weapon was nowhere to be found. I deployed K9 Corby again from the crime scene to conduct an evidence search. About a ¼ mile away as we were walking in grass along a roadway, Corby stopped ahead of me with his nose pointing to a tan object. As I got up to him it was the weapon, it turned out the suspect threw it out the window of the car as he fled the scene.

A bloodhound has approximately 300 million scent receptors in their olfactory system. We humans only have approximately 5 million. As much as we may think a dog can stink, imagine what a bloodhound makes of us!! Bandit only recently completed his training and has started working. Most of his work career so far has been doing public and school demonstrations.

DOGS NAME: SHERLOCK JOB: Tracking/trailing of missing/endangered persons and criminals. Jupiter PD.

AGE: 9 SPECIAL SKILLS: Natural ability to follow a scent FAVORITE FOOD: anything made with peanut butter FAVORITE HOBBIES: chasing squirrels PET PEEVE: diesel trucks driving by his yard (Garbage, UPS, FedEx) BEST FRIEND: Me (Officer Chad Norman) FUN FACTS: Snores very loud! Bloodhounds are physically superior tracking dogs. When their nose is down to the ground, loose skin covers eyes which makes his other senses, i.e. smell and hearing, stronger. His droopy ears drag the ground and “sweep” the scent towards his nose, while his drool helps to make the scent stronger by wetting the skin cells/rafts. (think of pouring water on a powdered drink mix)

One of Sherlock’s first successful tracks was for an elderly woman that had walked away from her family’s condo. Sherlock was given an article of clothing that had the woman’s scent on it and quickly started trailing her through the condo property. He located her a few hundred feet away hiding in the pool clubhouse restroom. When she saw Sherlock, she yelled “I can’t believe they called the dogs on me! I just wanted to walk to the store to get a bottle of wine!” One night at about 1:30 am Sherlock and I were called to assist in searching for a missing/ endangered 14 year old girl who was found to have left her house. Sherlock was scented off a pillowcase I removed from the girls’ bed and he quickly located a track leaving the house. The track went through a golf course, into a condo complex and out to a sidewalk. Sherlock tracked along the sidewalk for a long distance and as we crossed an intersection he became very excited and pulled me to an 8 foot tall concrete wall/sign. He initially jumped up to the wall then started running around to the other side where he found the girl sitting unharmed in a fetal position. The track was almost 1 ½ miles in length. I don’t have his combined stats as of yet but he has found many people in his career: missing, suicidal and criminals. We have been called multiple times to assist other law enforcement agencies from Fort Pierce to Broward County.
