Design Philosophy My goal as a professional designer is to respond to the needs of diverse people by being innovative with colors, finishes and architectural elements. Through effective communication and the ability to portray my ideas on paper through space planning, technical drawings and 3-dimensional renderings, I can create attractive, functional, and inspiring spaces for clients and users. A strong desire of mine is to make all spaces universal and human, as well as naturally sustainable. It is our duty to make everyone feel comfortable and have the ability to benefit from a space in a meaningful way. By creating hospitality environments in this manner we can better someone’s experience and encourage them to return. I want my work to withstand the test of time and enhance the community.

All projects, documents, drawings and ideas are property of the designer and may not be copied or reproduced in any way.

Frank Lloyd Wright Museum Hospitality Design Project Description: Create a museum that honors and displays the work of Frank Lloyd Wright while keeping the over all building in a contemporary style. Client: The Board of Members for the museum consisted of a Director and CEO and other representatives from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Taliesin Preservation Inc. Building Background: This building design was completely up to the designer. It had to be 2 stories high and the location was also left for the designer to decide. The only requirement was that it had to remain in Wisconsin.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT MUSEUM MADISON, WI Team project completed in Fall 2013. Partner: Melissa Tennant Concept: The building as a whole represents a postmodern design because there are multiple styles combined and altered. The museum still appears simplistic but greater aesthetic details are encouraged. We wanted to create an environment that would inspire multiple age groups to visit and allows them to be excited to explore all areas of the museum. All of the spaces open to each other either through balconies, glass or the use of an open floor plan so that the people within them feel connected to every provided area, as well as the nature surrounding the building.

Permanent Exhibit Space: Rendering completed by Melissa Tennant

One of the main concepts we developed was the idea of connecting the guests to the surrounding nature around the building. This was a common aspect in all of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs so we wanted to honor him in this way. The guests have the option to access balconies on the second floor from both exhibit spaces.

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

The colored ceiling beams are a key design feature within both exhibit spaces. The majority of the space is an off white color scheme with a high gloss white floor. The beams face is constructed of a silver metal while the sides are colored glass of either red, blue or green. The ceiling above is also glass so the sun will cast the colors down on to the floor to create interest.

Creating a 3-dimensional model allows you to get a better understanding of the dynamics of a building. For this museum our model helps you gain perspective on how the two floors connect to each other and where glass will be incorporated throughout the building.

Rejuvenate Inn Hospitality Design Project Description: Design and layout the 1st floor of a boutique hotel. This includes the office spaces, reception desk and seating space, as well as the continental breakfast space and bar. Client: Klimpton Group Building Background: The client purchased a vacant office building and wanted to convert it to a boutique hotel. The building is in the heart of downtown Cincinnati and is surrounded by the Ohio River. The faรงade of the building was constructed in the 1930s in an Art Deco Style. Since this hotel is in a historical location the exterior faรงade cannot be altered.

REJUVENATE INN CINCINNNATI, OH Project completed in Fall 2011. Concept: The inspiration for this hotel is taken from its name, Rejuvenate Inn. It displays a calming and soothing atmosphere with its cool color scheme which incorporates a variety of blues and numerous translucent features throughout. The design for this space is contemporary through the use of furniture and the customdesigned bar and registration desk. The design references the Art Deco style that distinguishes the exterior through the selected light fixtures. The entire space is open with minimal visual or structural separation, allowing for accessibility and a seamless transition from one area to the next. All of these elements allow the guests to feel comfortable and at ease during their stay, while still allowing for a unique experience that meets the needs of the young professional market.

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

The breakfast/bar space was a main focus of this project. I created a sophisticated space that is appealing to the young professional user. The whimsical light fixtures and finishes are what draws your eye into the space. All of the chairs and stools contain a shiny metal finish and the translucent features from the lobby are carried into this area as well.

“THE BARREL WINE AND CHEESE SHOP MINNEAPOLIS, MN Project completed in Spring 2012.

Concept: This wine and cheese shop incorporates multiple natural materials, such as various bricks and woods within the displays, furniture, cash wrap, walls and flooring. This allows the space to remain unified while still combining cool and warm materials for interest. Natural light is important to the space and creates warmth from the shadows and light patterns the windows cast onto the walls and floor. All of the finishes relate to the different elements of wine and the punched cooper tin in the bar and ceiling exemplify the numerous detailing that is shown in the built-in displays and custom furniture.

Pruitt-Igoe Housing Stevens Point, WI Project Description: Pruitt-Igoe was a large urban housing project that was developed in 1954 in St. Louis, Missouri. The living conditions in this building were poor and the residents were known for their poverty, crime and segregation. We studied this piece of history in order to gain a better understanding of what people need in an environment in order to feel comfortable and how to meet their physical and psychological needs. The second part of the project involved creating a community that houses multiple families. We paired up with three other students and developed a layout that would connect all of our separate house floor plans while still meeting the needs of our individual clients. This meant that rooms had to be positioned so that as many windows could be facing the sun as possible, ventilation was available for all homes and that all families would feel safe inside their small community and have the option of privacy when desired. Client: A group of four students within in our class.

PRUITT-IGOE HOUSING MADISON, WI Project completed in Spring 2012. Concept: My client stated that the living room is the core room in her home. It was important to enhance this space for her and make it enjoyable for all members of her family. The outside environment was significant to them so there are multiple outlets to the outside through windows and patio doors. This also allows natural light to be the main light source during the day. There is circulation through the entire space and the color scheme reflects a feeling of calmness and relaxation through the use of blues, greys and greens. Artificial lighting is scattered throughout to add warmth and mood lighting.

Frangipani Residence Stevens Point, WI Project Description: The family is from Italy. They relocated to the heart of Stevens Point and desired a home that would display Italian influences, as well as be adaptable to the physical and mental needs of their family members. Each member had a unique quality to them which made special circumstances, specific design aspects and varying materials a necessity in this design. The father had developed adult ADD/ADHD and requested a quiet space to go to after work, the mother loved to paint scenes of the family and also suffered from seasonal depression, and their daughter had been blind since birth. The grandparents moved from Italy to live with them. The grandmother enjoys making homemade pasta so the kitchen was important to her. The grandfather was in a wheelchair and needed handicap accessible resources throughout the home. Client: The Frangipani Family Building Background: The client wanted a newly constructed 2-story home in the middle of Stevens Point, WI. They provided specific rooms and activities that they wanted to incorporate and left the rest of the design up to the designer, including the exterior shape of the building.

FRANGIPANI RESIDENCE STEVENS POINT, WI Project completed in Spring 2012. Concept: It was important to make the furnishings, lighting and finishes relate back to Italy but still have a unique flare that sets this house apart from other homes. This was accomplished by placing multiple stained glass windows throughout the space. There is more than one in the dining room, a couple in the seating room and one large full wall focus window in the kitchen. This window wall brings together all of the colors used in the home and allows for mass amounts of sunlight to be brought inside. The light fixtures also have glass in them to carry out the theme. These small but powerful details along with the engravings on the stair case make this space unified and grand. All of the rooms are connected in some way which allows for the family to remain close but personal space is still provided.

COLOR & DESIGN Artwork completed in Fall 2010.

Progression Study: The goal of this piece was to create a progression of color across a picture plane. I chose an analogous color scheme and used the green presented in the center of each of the large green progression sequences as the constant. The color, hues, tones and degree of intensity gradually change as you move through the space and as you move between colors.

42

Line with Collage and Paint: This art piece shows a mix of a geometric shapes, color, paint and magazine cutouts. The piece is unified and the placement of the irregular triangles and movement in the background creates rhythm. It displays areas of magazine that were removed and replicated in paint.

U-Haul Supergraphic: This is a unique take on the current graphics that are displayed on the sides of UHAUL moving trucks. I based my ad off the New York City broadway show of Mary Poppins.

BASIC DRAWING Drawings completed in Fall 2011.

Conte Shoes: This drawing involved enlarging a still-life and focusing on recreating the lights and darks cast down on the shoes by an artificial light source. This drawing was created by using conte and creating a wash so that the highlights could be added.

Charcoal Collage: The first task was to find images of famous artwork and cut them into collage pieces and then rearrange them into an interesting composition. This charcoal recreation is one small section of this collage but enlarged.

COLOR, DESIGN & DRAWING

Charcoal Drapery: This is a recreation of a still-life that was covered in multiple draping sheets. The paper started as a complete sheet of black charcoal. With the use of a kneaded eraser the high lights were added to create depth and show off the shadows that were formed by the layering of the sheets.

WISCONSIN GRANITE DEPOT CUDAHY, WI I worked for Wisconsin Granite Depot during the summer of 2012. Process: I was granted the opportunity to develop some designs for their showroom remodel. There were no previous floor plans or dimensions so I started the process by taking field measurements of the entire showroom, including all cabinetry . The owner wanted a visual example of the changes so I put the plans into Sketchup and collaborated with him to come up with a plan for the changes he wanted to see done. Due to some unforeseen time constraints my plans were only able to be incorporated partially with a mix of new ideas as well. I selected all of the new paint for the walls and helped select some of the lighting that is displayed behind the onyx half wall. It was a great learning experience in a real world setting.
