In 1917, breaking with convention, ten mothers dared to create The Harley School. They envisioned a learning

community that would: interpret and meet the needs of the individual child so that he may fit in with and serve his fellow beings to the height of his powers. Like our founders, we believe each of our students is meant to lead a life of great purpose. At Harley we insist: Become What Thou Art. As we enter our second century, we look to the future from a position of strength. Harley students excel. In science and mathematics, humanities and the arts, their academic outcomes and preparation rank at the top in this region. Enrollment has reached historic high levels. We have broken new ground in the study of sustainability, mindfulness, hands-on learning, civic engagement, and edible education. Our athletes do us proud. Around the world, Harley alumni pursue passions they first discovered here. Together, we have restated the School’s mission and created a strategic plan with three firm commitments. 1. We will inspire academic excellence. 2. We will live our mission as a diverse, inclusive school. 3. We will strengthen our financial sustainability. Join us. Ward Ghory, Head of School

The Harley School Mission We are a diverse, inclusive school. We provide a balanced education that prepares our students to meet the challenges of tomorrow and lead lives of great purpose. 1. We inspire academic excellence. 2. We foster joy in learning in both the arts and sciences. 3. We promote physical and mental fitness. 4. We show how to care for the world and other people. 5. We empower our students to become confident, lifelong learners.

Academic Excellence The Harley faculty bring out the best in their students. Here, diverse individuals come into their own as skilled learners and compassionate contributors. Our students soar when our faculty have all they need to plan well. We will encourage professional development, promote reflective evaluation, and commit to improved compensation. We will seek memorable ways to bring learning to life through thoughtful and continuous curriculum review. We will place the right academic technology into the hands of knowing students and prepared teachers.

A Diverse, Inclusive School In a school with the highest average SAT scores in Greater Rochester, more than half of our students receive financial assistance. Nearly 30% of our scholars are students of color. The families and faculty who join Harley seek a school that prepares leaders for a global economy and interconnected world. We will open doors of opportunity for deserving students through endowed scholarships and annual grants. We will model principles of sustainability through curriculum and programs emphasizing design and innovation, student-directed problem solving, and immersive service learning. We will expand student engagement with parents, alumni, and community leaders.

Financial Sustainability Generations of leaders, donors, and educators have bequeathed current students wonderful facilities and imaginative programs. In 2014, we opened our prizewinning Commons building to anchor our push forward in the study of science and sustainability. With strategic plan in hand, we intend to ask your support to increase annual giving and expand endowment underwriting student scholarship and faculty development. We will celebrate one hundred years of joy in learning with events and publications that reaffirm our place as a regional educational leader with a national reputation. We will solidify enrollment demand by aligning our marketing and public relations with our mission and strategic plan. We will maintain and upgrade campus facilities that enhance our programs.

Join us as we build on the solid foundation of a well-established school.
