• Bullying • Slapping • Punching • Weapon use • Rape You can suffer serious injury, significant social and emotional damage, or even death. Students who start violent acts at school may continue to do more serious violence when they grow up.

WHAT CAUSES SCHOOL VIOLENCE?

The causes of school violence are complex and varied. Reasons why students are violent against others could include lack of attention from their parents, media influences—such as music lyrics, Hollywood movies, television programs, and video games—feelings of loneliness, due to being outcasted, rejected, or shunned by their peers. Another very important reason that causes violence to happen is lack of respect. This book is a perfect place to learn more respect.

Every day 5,958 teenagers ages 10 to 24 fall victim to school violence.

INJURIES

Violence-related school injuries create consequences that can be very hurtful and serious. They include cuts, bruises, broken bones, and gunshot wounds. Some injuries, like gunshot wounds, can lead to permenant damage.

However, if we want to get along with each other, we need to give respect . Believe it or not , having and giving respect is the key to reducing school violence. The next page lists some examples of disrespect. See if you have done this or have had this done to you.

Having respect for others starts with having respect for yourself. Knowing what makes you so special is important because everybody is special in his or her own way. There is no such thing as an exact replica of you on earth ! We can’t expect others to be exactly like you, just as you will never be able to act or think the same exact way as other people. Write down what makes you unique.

HOW CAN YOU SAY THINGS BETTER?

Practice respect by simply saying good words in your daily life. Do you feel good when people say “ thank you” to you? Then say it to people more often. When you do something wrong, say “sorry.” It may not make up for it, but it can decrease people’s anger and prevent serious conflicts. Here are some situations where it’s important to say things respectfully. We have given you a rude example for each situation. Can you come up with good solutions?

You are in a hurry to use the bathroom at school, and the person inside is taking too long. Class is about to start, and you really need to go... How can you say it nicely? Rude: Hello? Can you hurry up? What’s taking you so long? Don’t you know there’s a lot of people waiting outside? (Keep knocking door heavily.) Nice:

Your friend borrowed your favorite game from you. It’s been two weeks and you want to play it again.... How can you say it nicely? Rude: Give me my game back right now! Nice:

Treating people with respect makes your world a nicer place to live in, whether it’s at home, at school, or out in your community. And it’s easy when you make it a habit. How would you show respect in the following situations?

You and your two good friends are planning to spend a day at a park. One of them wants to invite another kid who’s new in school. Another one doesn’t want to hang out with this person because he/she is a nerd. What would you do to show your respect?

During class, the teacher is speaking in the front of the classroom, but there are a few students talking by themselves and not listening. Their talking is getting louder and noiser. What would you do to show respect to the teacher?

He always makes fun of you. You believe he doesn’t deserve your respect. But how can you be the “better” person and show you respect? What would you do?

“He/she doesn’t deserve my respect.” It’s normal to feel this way, yet it isn’t the attitude God wants us to have. We can be aware of others’ faults, and there may be times when we need to confront sin, yet the Bible tells us that we need to maintain an attitude of respect for everybody. For example, there is a story in the Bible 1 Samuel 26. “But the LORD forbid that I should lay a hand on the LORD’S anointed.” (1 Samuel 26:11) God wants you to respect your girlfriend or boyfriend, parent, classmates or others because of their role in your life.

E RESPECT OTHERS’ DESIRE TO BE GOOD PEOPLE.

Your friends may make decisions that you think are foolish. They may be lazy and forgetful. Yet chances are good they want to be good people and do the right thing. You can respect the desire of someone’s heart even if you are disappointed by his or her actions.

ACKNOWLEDGE THAT OTHERS HAVE WEAKNESSES.

Everyone is imperfect. Be careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their good qualities.

He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Leviticus 19:18 Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. 1 Timothy 3:3 Not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
