FROM THE PRESIDENT 2014 is off to a raucous start for member participation! Over 150 members danced the night away at the Luau with the help of the official rock band of the Washington Redskins, Love Seed Mama Jump. They are a six-piece band famous for their high-energy performances. They’ll be back for even more good times at this year’s President’s Ball. Speaking of which, mark your calendars for Saturday, May 3rd! We’ll be celebrating the run for the roses with a Triple Crown themed event. Ladies, get your hats ready! Michael Mondavi came to Chartwell on his 71st birthday last month. He brought with him an array of unbelievable wines while guest Chef John Bell prepared a scrumptious six-course meal. It was difficult to determine which was better, the food or the wine. Either way, it was a spectacular evening and a real treat to have Mr. Mondavi share some of his finest selections and entertaining stories. A special thanks to Lee Meyers, Shaun Mahoney and Michael Fay for their diligent efforts over the past several months in helping the club find our new chef, Andrew Magitti. Join me in welcoming Chef Andrew. We’re thrilled to experience a new level of cuisine at what will surely become the best place to dine in the area. If you’ve missed out on any events or new menu offerings and nightly specials, please be sure to connect with Michael Fay and his staff to ensure the Club has the best email for you and your family to learn about everything happening at the club. I’ve heard from countless members that they aren’t receiving email notifications, only to learn their spouses’ email was the only one in the system. Whoever takes the lead in your household for your social calendar should have their email in the system. Make sure you’re “in the know”! This year’s Board retreat (held annually in January) was focused on membership acquisition, retention and increased participation. Over the past year, we have tested a variety of membership marketing programs with varying degrees of success. This year’s retreat featured Steve Graves of Creative Golf Marketing. Steve’s firm specializes in membership marketing programs and they have very successfully worked with over 1,200 country clubs nationwide. The Board is working with Creative Golf Marketing to incorporate a membership-marketing program that has proven both extremely successful across the country and can be tailored to our unique requirements. We discussed a wide variety of concepts, including an evaluation of our current membership classes. One area we will explore carefully is our Limited Golf membership class. A more comprehensive Limited Golf

membership category is something that clubs across the country have incorporated to accommodate evolving cultural trends. Simply put, many younger families don’t have the time in their schedule for weekend golf but would love to take friends or clients out mid-week, as would many retirees. Making our Limited Golf membership category less restrictive is something that could go a long way to attracting new members and retaining existing members. The Board and the Membership committee will be exploring this and other concepts over the next few months to determine what makes the most sense for Chartwell and how best to implement change. As always, thanks for your continued support for the member volunteers who contribute so much of their valuable time to help run your club. – Jay Dixon

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

“THIS MONTH S TA R T S O U R MEMBERSHIP GROWTH, RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION DIRECTIVE. WE HAVE PA R T N E R E D W I T H STEVE GRAVES OF C R E AT I V E G O L F MARKETING, THE PREMIER MEMBERSHIP MARKETING FIRM IN THE COUNTRY TO HELP IN THIS PORTION OF O U R S T R AT E G I C PLAN.”

3 March/April 2014

As we move forward with 2014 and Chartwell’s Strategic plan, I remind myself again of Joel Barker’s quote that I refer to often: “No one will thank you for taking care of the present if you neglected the future”. Last Chatter issue, I discussed the communications plan and marketing of Chartwell. Since then, we have upgraded our email data list and mailings, created a new web site that is easier to use with smartphones, our phone app and has capabilities to add events straight into your calendars as well as developing a web based interactive information board in the foyer of the dining room. Add this to our Facebook page and we have developed a well-rounded communications plan that reaches more members than ever before. This month starts our membership growth, recruitment and retention directive. We have partnered with Steve Graves of Creative Golf Marketing, the premier membership marketing firm in the country to help in this portion of our strategic plan. Although, we have requested help and direction to accomplish this goal, it inevitably falls on our members to help grow our membership by sponsoring friends, acquaintances and business partners. I hope everyone attends his information discussions to help keep Chartwell healthy. Our Board President, Jay Dixon has more information in his column regarding this topic. As many of you know, we have been in transition within our culinary program. I would like to thank the entire culinary team for the hard work and dedication they showed during this time of transition. It is during these times that the true character of our staff shines through. I would like to recognize, Chris Kruger, Charles Wagner, Rodney Murray, Matt Botero-Drake and Todd Putnam, who are the backbone of the team and along with Trevor Bell, Andrew Stachowski and Ellis Bristol to round out an exceptional group. As we progress down our planning list, we come to a very important section, that of Food and Beverage service levels and membership satisfaction/services. I find this to be a significant component of membership retention and acquisition. During our closing in January, I worked with our talented culinary team to identify shortcomings in our organization in the kitchen. The result was a change in equipment configuration to help the flow and speed of preparation and production. This, combined with the addition of our Certified Executive Chef Andrew Maggitti, is allowing us to move in a very positive direction. With the help of our Food and Beverage Manager, Walter Beller we have changed the way our dining room and banquet departments hire, train and inform our staff. The development of new manuals, tests, meetings and rewards has created an education system that keeps our staff knowledgeable of menus, events and service targets on a daily basis. We have developed a winning team between Chef Andrew’s Premier Country Club background and Walter’s training with the Ritz-Carlton. Our dining room has been invigorated with the placement of Kate Nerf and Claire Meyers as dining room supervisors, and no one can question the exceptional service and attitude of our very own Bar Supervisor Lou. With the guidance of our House Committee and Mission Statement, we begin a new chapter in our culinary and dining room services and quality. I am excited to see our team develop, and over the next few months, I believe that a major difference in our service and satisfaction will begin to shine through. Some difficult decisions have been made, but I am always attempting to take care of our present, while focusing on our future. – Michael

M A K I N G R E S E R VAT I O N S There is very good and exciting news for you. Chartwell Golf and Country Club is rapidly becoming a place for all our members to visit this winter. With this increase in popularity and demand we are finding it more important for our members contact the Club for dinner reservations. Our goal is to serve every member with quality, consistent and efficient service and food. Due to our limited culinary and seating space this can only be accomplished through well thought out and executed plans. As we become more tuned in with the needs of our members we realize that last minute decision making is widely used at Chartwell. As with any restaurant, as our dining volume increases during peak times you may be asked to have a cocktail at our wonderful bar while we delight your fellow member with exceptional service and quality as we will with you once your table is ready. Executive Chef, Andrew Maggitti will provide us with a consistent culinary experience as he becomes acclimated with the Chartwell operation and our Food and Beverage Manager, Walter Beller will continue to focus on service efficiency. Your dining flexibility is vitally important for the success of our dining operation. We are looking forward to see you.

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE It’s 2014 at Chartwell and we are poised for another great year. There are so many positive changes happening within every aspect of the club. Just look around, the food, the wine, the events, and most importantly the friends and good times. I am really excited to lead the Clubhouse Committee. We have already conducted our first House Committee meeting of the year and discussed many interesting topics. We have a lot of work to do, but we cannot do this work alone. We need your thoughts and ideas on changes you feel are important to our continued success. Our committee is equally represented by full golf members, social members, seasoned and newer members, men and women. I feel this, along with the collaboration of other committees, can result in many positives changes. Our role as your house committee is to make any recommendations to the board which best serve our members to enhance your enjoyment and usage of the club amenities, including the Food and Beverage service, Bar, Clubhouse, Billiard room and surroundings, while working closely with the General Manager, Executive Chef and staff. Our goal is also to work diligently for the membership to help the staff and management do what they do best, provide excellent service at every level and exceed our expectations. I have never seen our staff being more attentive, efficient, and courteous. I am hoping you have experienced this as well.

“ I T ’ S 2 0 1 4 AT CHARTWELL AND WE ARE POISED FOR ANOTHER G R E AT Y E A R . THERE ARE SO MANY POSITIVE CHANGES HAPPENING WITHIN EVERY ASPECT OF THE CLUB.”

Regarding the staff, recently we all received an email introducing our new executive chef, Andrew Maggitti. We are very happy and excited to have Chef Andrew. After many interviews with several highly qualified Chefs, Andrew stood out from the crowd with his culinary skills and acumen, and clearly wears the tallest hat in any kitchen. I encourage everyone to make your reservations so you can enjoy his wonderful talent first hand. There is no doubt he will prove to be a great asset to our dining experience for members and guests alike. His passion and creativity will keep us all coming back for more. See you at the Club! – Shaun Mahoney

J A C K S PA C K What is Jack’s Pack? Jack’s Pack was started in 1985 under the guidance of member Jack McCabe, the “Pack’s” originator and founder. It all began as a mid-week men’s golf group as way to gather for a friendly game of golf on Tuesday mornings. It was open to all male golf members and play was all year round through winter freeze, spring thaw, summer heat and fall’s frost. During the early stages the “pack” included 20-30 participants that played weekly. In the early 90’s the pack went international. Under the influence of members Harry White and Englishman Dave Vallis the “EGGS” (English Gentleman’s Golf Society) was hatched. This was a home/away golf tournament where 8-10 husband and wives would travel to either England or the U.S.A and stayed with the home team families. Each year the victor would hold the trophy at the home course. Chartwell was victorious in the final year of the EGGS matches. Mr. McCabe requested that another member, Dick Greullick arrange the Jack Pack dinner at various times of the year. Over the years it grew and was scheduled to be held the first Thursday of each month. This dinner was called affectionately “the Pheeding Phrenzy”. Presently, the dinner is still ongoing on the same first Thursday of every month and the name has been changed back to Jack’s Pack. The dinner is open to all members. If you would like to participate in the Jack’s Pack dinners please contact Nicole Rummel in the main office at 410-987-0400 or by email nrummel@chartwellgcc.com

GOLF As in years past my staff and I visited the PGA Merchandise Show to find the newest, hottest products in the industry. This season we visited the FlightScope booth to learn how technology can better allow us to help you get the most out of your game. The FlightScope X2 model is the most advanced teaching and fitting tool on the market today. FlightScope X2 is the world’s first completely wireless, battery-operated, 3D Doppler tracking radar for golf and used by the world’s best to help them become better players. This season our staff will be utilizing FlightScope X2, to offer you side-by-side video, club, and ball data comparison. This tool will also allow us to give you the very best experience in club fitting. The skills challenge function also allows us to create benchmarking for you, as you look to improve every aspect of your game.

LADIES GOLF 101

Dear Member,

This coming season we are excited to introduce a new introductory ladies golf school. Our goal is to provide a comfortable, nonintimidating learning environment for female golfers of all skill levels. Each school will consist of three, two hour sessions. During this time students will learn the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, proper etiquette, and how to practice. Students will also navigate the golf course with instructors as they learn how to play the game. Rules, appropriate pace of play practices of the game will also be covered during this time. Be on the lookout for additional information come spring.

Chartwell has made a club-wide effort to continuously exceed member satisfaction and remain the premier club in our region. It is with this we upgraded our fleet of golf cars, Beverage Car and Driving Range picker and this year, we've replaced our pull-carriage and have added a four bag golf car. We've received favorable feedback on our new golf cars and we hope that the membership will be similarly impressed by our new pull carts and other golf related amenities. All of the additions are within budgetary requirements and offer a better experience for all golfing members. With this we have had a modest increase in cost for the rental of the electric cars and pull carriages. The rental price takes into account the cost of maintenance and repairs, electricity, cleaning, and the cost of maintaining the car paths and repairing the wear and tear that the cars put on the golf course. We believe that the new fleet of electric cars and the additional pull-carriages that will adequately supply the growing demand for walking rounds will be a great addition in keeping the Chartwell golf experience far above other Clubs in the region. We are excited for the new golf season with several new amenities and new members. The Golf Committee

INTRODUCING GARTH MCGEE What does a Northern Ireland golfer have to do with Chartwell? Well we are proud that Garth has chosen Chartwell Golf and Country Club as his home course. What does “home course” mean? All of our members consider Chartwell as their home course. When Garth is announced at all of his Tour events, Chartwell Golf and Country Club will be announced as his home course. He also wears our logo on his clothes and golf bag. Chartwell is where Garth practices and fine tunes his game. Just like all of us do. Garth is a graduate of Old Dominion(VA) and has gained an exemption to play on the NGA Pro Golf Tour. Garth began his career at a very young age under tutelage of his father, Michael McGee, who is arguably Ireland’s finest coach. Michael McGee is a Golf Union of Ireland PGA Professional and has played on the European Tour. In addition, he has coached Ireland’s junior golf teams and players including Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy. Garth McGee is recognized by the PGA as a playing member of a feeder tour and it is his stated aim to graduate to full-time PGA Tour participation by 2015. Garth has already completed 2 tournaments in 2014 finishing 15th and 21st respectively. Garth has also made no secret in his ambition to represent Ireland in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Garth’s achievements, to name a few, include: • 3 time Ulster Schools stroke play champion • 3 times Irish schools stroke play champion • Quarter Finalist British Boys, defeating Tom Lewis and Chris Lloyd both of which are current European Tour Members • Winner of Home International Trophy competing against England, Scotland and Wales • Youngest and undefeated member of the Irish U21 team • Winner of 3 Pro-Ams in USA
