168th county fair kicks off Sunday
The signature archway soon will be a passage way for participants, vendors and visitors to the annual county fair. With the fair just around the corner some of the added touches such as bunting are being hung with care waiting to be enjoyed by the showman and visitors alike. Fairboard member Dennis Flugan of Salem with the help of Dairy Beef committeeman Delmar Karlen of Salem began rehanging the bunting that adorns the beef complex and dairy barns as well as getting the U.S, state, 4-H and FFA flags hung throughout the animal area of the fairgrounds.

LISBON — The 168th annual Columbiana County Fair begins the week of July 29 and new as well as old features will arrive in the county, said Tresa Unkefer, secretary of the Fair Board. “There is such a tradition of events that have been going on since the beginning,” she said. “The harness racing is one of the biggest.” Old photos from the 1800s hanging in the fair office show families gathered around the arena under the shade trees picnicking watching the races, she said. Some past events will be returning such as the combine demolition derby, the truck and tractor pulls, and Zach Paxson will be returning this year for a concert in the Grandstand. New events are also arriving such as magician and balloon artist Dennis Regling, “Arrival,” a Journey tribute band, and the high school Strongman competition. Also new will be a ticket booth at Gate A, donated by Salem Structures. “The old ticket booth will be moving to Gate B,” Unkefer said. “The whole front area in front of Gate A has been spruced up.” In addition to the new ticket booth, the “old government building” is being renovated and a new livestock sales office was

donated. The money for renovation and costs for upkeep come entirely from donations and money generated from ticket sales, Unkefer said. “People in this community are so generous,” she said. “I’m amazed at the amount of people who want to see it grow and be good for the next generation.” The fair is completely non-profit and all the money generated from sales goes to operating costs for general utilities such as electric and insurance, and Unkefer said it is a challenge to keep things going and have leftovers for extra needs like renovations and improvements. “The fair board works all year either planning things or working to keep making the fair better,” Unkefer said. “They volunteer their time for this.” She said the board volunteers their time to renovations and improvements to “get people to come out and enjoy it, and show our support for 4-H.” Another new feature will be the closing of Saltwell Road during fair week. “The road is dangerous during the week of the fair and I’m glad [it’s closing] for safety,” Unkefer said. “Educating the public for an accurate traffic flow will be a continuing work in progress.”

Building projects help improve fair By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — There are a few building projects happening at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds in preparation for the fair. An Integrity Kokosing Construction trailer was donated to the board and is the new Junior Fair Livestock Sales Office. The trailer was donated after an accident caused damage to the trailer. A truck hauling the trailer crashed into a tree after slipping on the ice after a winter storm, Tresa Unkefer, secretary of the board, said. Usually, Baer Auctioneers bring their own trailer in to handle the auctioning and payments of the livestock. The new, donated trailer eliminated them from needing to do that, she said. The office handles transactions and payments of the livestock auction and organizes and sets up the processes of the auction itself, she said. When the fair is not going on, the office can be used as a meeting room and a storage area.
The damaged part of the trailer was renovated and will be ready for use during fair week. Another project going on is the renovation of the oldest building on the fairgrounds “the old government building.” “We wanted to keep the historical aspect of it in place,” Unkefer said. “So we decided to renovate it instead of tearing it down.” The building was not in use last year because of the condition it was in, but it has been previously used for multiple features of the fair. This year, it will hold commercial vendors. “It’s been used for a little bit of everything,” she said. “It’s been used for arts, fruits and vegetables, government displays, and my dad said he used it when he was younger as a 4-H booth.” In addition to the building projects, a new ticket booth was donated as well as 22 trees for the grounds.

Top, the new sales office and meeting hall under renovation is expected to be finished by opening day. The office is a modular construction trailer that was donated to the fairgrounds by Integrity Kokosing Construction (IKC). Bottom, steps were taken toward relief from the heat, a little more shade and improved aesthetics with the planting of trees in the ride areas, donated by Dave Johnson with the work of Kenny Schwingle.

Entertainment of all kinds planned for this year By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — Entertainment comes in many varieties at this year’s fair. There will be much to see not only at the Grandstand this year, but around the fairgrounds as well. New this year is magician and balloon artist Dennis Regling who will be perform-
ing four times daily at the picnic area. According to his website, Regling has performed over 3000 programs at schools, fairs, festivals, camps, churches, private parties and company events in 22 states. He has also been a part of Lisbon’s Johnny Appleseed festival previously. His website also says he is considered the country’s “best strolling balloon artist” not-
ing he doesn’t just twist balloons, he makes it an experience. Along with Regling, also new this year will be Arrival - the Journey tribute band who will be performing after bike night 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30. “I am really excited about it,” said Tresa Unkefer, secretary of the fair board. According to the band’s website, all the
members are “seasoned veterans of the Cleveland rock scene.” The website also says each band member has mastered the replication of Journey’s sound to make the audience feel like they’re at one of Journey’s live concerts. They also won a “Best of Cleveland” award given by Cleveland magazine in 2012 for best tribute band. A renewed feature in the Grandstand will be the high school Strongman competition 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug 2. It will be free admission into the stands. Another act that will entertain this year is Brian Brenner who will do an Elvis tribute show, performing Tuesday, July 30, through Friday, Aug. 2 on the Midway stage. According to his website, Brenner has been impersonating Elvis for the last 15 years. His website says he “is careful to portray Elvis in a manner that is dignified, respectful and historically accurate, paying strict attention to every detail.” Acts returning this year include singer Zach Paxson who will be joined by Jeremy Miller for a concert at the Grandstand at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. This will be free admission into the Grandstand. Also, Buffo the World’s Strongest Clown will make appearances daily next to the Government Building on the lawn. According to his website, he “is no ordinary clown ... he juggles bowling balls as well as hatchets, meat cleavers, fire and chain saws.” He has also entertained at the White House, his website said. Also returning is the truck and tractor pull 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Cost of admission into the stands will be $5. The combine demolition derby will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 and will also cost $5. Another Grandstand entertainment that will cost $5 is the “Cavalcade of Thrills” car demo derby 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4.
Advance fair tickets Advance ticket sales for the Columbiana County Fair will be sold through 3 p.m. July 29 at the fair office. Cost for seven pre-sale tickets is $30 and rides are not included. Curtis F. Hively was a general crop and beef cattle farmer in eastern Columbiana County’s Unity Township, but his leadership and agricultural abilities were anything but ordinary. Hively was Hively born, raised and then farmed his entire lifetime on the family’s historic farmstead near New Waterford, Ohio. He and his wife, Esther, raised eight children there, and the Hively’s Highland Farm continues today, having marked its 200th year in 2007. in 1937, a 32 hp Huber Model B, and was in demand to do planting and harvesting custom work for other farmers. His interest in cattle led him to register his Shorthorn beef cattle with the American Shorthorn Association in 1947, and he took an active role in local and state cattle breeding and production programs. In 1949, the family started showing cattle at the Columbiana County Fair and Canfield Fair, and Hively served on the Columbiana County Agricultural Society board in the 1950s, providing leadership to the construction of the fairgrounds’ Coliseum and cattle barn. He was a lifetime member and leader of the Zion Lutheran Church, serving as trustee, elder and Sunday school superintendent. Active in other community organizations, Hively was also elected to the New Waterford Board of Education, serving as its vice president during the 1950s, and was instrumental in helping the school build additional classrooms.

Local country stars performing concert Wednesday By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — Nashville recording artist Zach Paxson will be making another concert appearance at the Columbiana County Fair this year, and a second Nashville act, Jeremy Miller will be joining him. “Last year, the grandstands were almost full [during his concert],” Tresa Unkefer, secretary of the fair board, said. “People were thrilled he was here.” The fair board wanted to provide a free concert so they didn’t have to charge more money for tickets. “Local acts also bring in their following,” Unkefer said. Zach Paxson grew up in Gavers and has been in the area and all of his life. He said he loves the area because of the people in it and the quiet, peaceful setting. “There’s no traffic and it’s peaceful,” he said. “And our cities aren’t big huge cities either.” He said playing for the fair last year was great and it was one of the better crowds he had played for. “We packed the house and that hasn’t happened in a while,” he said with a laugh. “I would play there every year if they asked.” Paxson said he also likes playing for the fair because people who don’t get to see his concerts due to their age, location, or the late times of his shows can come out and see him play. “It’s nice to play for the home crowd and see people from the area,” he said. He said playing music in front of the crowd, other than having a wife and kids, is the greatest feeling in the world. “Being up there doing what you love, and seeing people relating to what you write and sing, you savor every moment because it goes quick,” he said. “You appreciate every
moment.” He gets his inspiration for music from his parents. He said when he was little, his dad’s bluegrass band was in his kitchen playing every Wednesday so he was always around instruments. “My mom can sing like an angel and my dad exposed me to music constantly,” he said. “It’s something that’s been in me from a young age.” He said songwriting comes naturally to him and he doesn’t even have to think about doing it. “You can’t be something you’re not, he said. “[I’m] naturally born to play for people.” He said he loves to play as much as possible, and play always. When he was younger, the fair was always something he looked forward to, he said. “Especially growing up in Gavers, there wasn’t much going on, so the fair was something you looked forward to to meet up with your friends,” he said. “Over summer, you usually only saw kids you were lucky enough to grow up around.” He said he remembers playing football in the cattle arena after hours with his friends and camping there. “It was a blast and a big part of us growing up,” he said.

Social media and technology make it seem crazy now, he said, but the fair was basically the only way to catch up and get together.

said he had heard about him being local and said they probably only lived 15 minutes away from each other and they had never met until Nashville. “We keep up on Facebook and he’s a good guy,” Paxson said. This fall, he will be playing on the Lynyrd Skynyrd “Simple Man” cruise and said it was the biggest thing he’s gotten to do. “It’s something I’ll be able to cross off my bucket list,” he said. The cruise is a week long and features big name artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Los Lonely Boys, and many others. The day after the fair, he is going to Georgia to play at the Southern Ground Social Club, which was founded by Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band. Fans can visit his website at www.zachpaxson.com Jeremy Miller is also no stranger to the area. He grew up in Lisbon and moved to Nashville to follow his passion and said he likes the area because of the down home feel and the good people. He said he misses being home, and Nashville is definitely a change. “It’s a nice little, big city,” he said. Miller was a bull rider for years and also trained horses. He said he decided to pursue music after an accident that injured him and

He said he is looking forward to performing and getting to see old friends and family and show all the work he has put in to his career and bring it back home. Strongman competition renewed By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — A renewed feature of the Columbiana County fair this year will be the High School Strongman Competition. “We invited local high school football teams in the area to compete against each other,” said Tresa Unkefer, secretary of the fair board. Paul Lease, a director of the fair board, said he had come up with the idea a few years ago and they were able to do it in 2006 and 2007 but had to stop because of the timing. He said the local football teams couldn’t come due to scheduling conflicts with the playoffs, but this year, the timing happened to fall between sessions. “The kids and coaches really enjoyed it,” Lease said. “I’m glad we could get it back.” The competition includes the sandbag relay, where players carry sandbags 200 feet as quickly as they can and stack them up and get points based on which teams do the best. Another competition is the heavy sandbag event, where five players from each team will carry a 125 pound bag the length of the
track, which is 200 feet long, and back as long as they can and when they can’t do it anymore, the next player takes over. Whichever team lasts the longest will win. A third competition for the Strongman is the tug-of-war which leads to another competition where the tug-of-war rope is tied to a tractor and 10 players pull it. Whichever team pulls it the quickest will win. Whatever team has the most wins by the end will win a traveling trophy - the trophy will be continuously passed on from year to year with the winners’ names added on to the plaque each year. The last year it was held, Beaver Local won and will have to bring the trophy back so it’s up for grabs. “We invited all the local football teams in the county,” Lease said. “We have at least five committed now.” The Strongman Competition will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 and is a free Grandstand event. “The fans really like it and everybody has a really good time.” Lease said. “It’s a funfilled event.”
Making history President of the board, Sharen Cope, is the first woman in the 168 years of the fair to be elected president. She is also the director of arts and crafts and horse departments.

New draft horse show for fair’s youth 2013 Fair Board By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — New entertainment to see at the Columbiana County fair this year includes a draft horse show for the fair’s youth. Draft horses are the “gentle giant” of the horse breed, Sharen Cope, president of the fair board, said. Light horses are more for agility and showmanship competitions and draft horses are heavier, she said. The specific horses are stabled on the fairgrounds that the youths will be handling. “It takes a lot of talent to drive these horses,” Cope said. “The youths love being able to show them.” There will be four classes for the youth including junior, senior, under saddle and single hitch. The junior class will be for ages 10-14 and the senior class will be for ages 15-18. These are a halter class, Cope said, and the horses will be led into the ring and judges will be looking for confirmation and response from the horses.
Special promotions All children under 3 years of age, as well as servicemen and women in full uniform will be admitted for free. On July 30 all senior citizens, age 62 and older, and veterans with proper ID will be admitted for free.

The under saddle class will be judged based on the youth’s ability to control and the horse’s response to the rider. The single-hitch show is a more elaborate and decorative class, she said. Judges will be looking at how the horses carry themselves, driver control, performance of walk and trot, and the reverse, she said. Ponies are not eligible for this show. The winner of the show will get a special trophy that was made specifically for this part of the fair, she said. It will be awarded based on a point system from the judges. “We’re hoping people come watch and enjoy it,” she said. “Hopefully it will become an annual event at the fair.” The show will take place 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at the 4-H Horse Arena. This show is separate from the draft horse pull taking place 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Grandstand. This show is more for adults to participate in and includes single (lady or gentleman) and team-hitch classes, and are judged in the same manner as the youth show, Cope said.

Shoebox float contest gives youths ‘Tractor Fever’ By BRITTNEY SADLER Staff Writer
LISBON — Young exhibitors will be able to win one of two hand-stitched quilts in the tractor shoe box float contest at this year’s Columbiana County Fair. “The theme is ‘Tractor Fever,’” Sharen Cope, president of the fair board, said. “So many kids around here love tractors.” Any children from the area from ages 615 can participate. There are two classes, one for ages 6-10 and another for ages 1115. Participants are to take a shoe box, turn it upside down, and make it look like a trac-

The creations will be judged Sunday, July 28 in the Arts and Crafts Building. “Usually we close up the building to judge, and by the time it’s all set back up to open for the public it is around 6 p.m.,” Cope said. “We have the kids lining up at the doors by that time to see who won.” Cope said the tractor brands are a toss-up between John Deere Green and International Red, which is also what the quilts are

LISBON — The county fair will be honoring veterans this year by giving away patriotic quilts and afghans created in the special category “Operation Forever Grateful.” Sharen Cope, president of the fair board, said the quilt project was started by her in 2010 and was given to purple heart veterans that year. Last year, the quilts honored first responders. This year, the quilts and afghans will be made to honor local veterans from all conflicts. Cope said she came up with the idea for this project because both of her uncles earned Purple Hearts during their time in the military. Her uncle on her mother’s side was killed on the USAT Dorchester when it was sunk. He was only 19, and her uncle on her father’s side was taken prisoner at the Battle of Bastogne. “It’s an integral part of my family’s military history,” she said. Quilt and afghan exhibitors come from all over, Cope said. The quilts and afghans will be displayed in the Arts and Crafts Building throughout

the fair. Creations will be presented to recipients at a ceremony and dinner on Sept. 8 at the fairgrounds, and following the ceremony will be a pot luck dinner where the makers of the quilts can meet the veterans their creations are going to. “It’s very emotional,” Cope said. “Everyone gets to meet and see who is receiving their quilts and it’s such a special experience for everyone ... they’re made with a lot of love and time, and they’re making a nice tribute.” Next year, the quilt project will honor Vietnam veterans. One of the reasons for this is the fairgrounds will host the Moving Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The wall will be on display Sept. 11-15, 2014. “This is very dear to my heart,” Cope said. “It was the war of my generation, and one of my childhood friend’s names is on the wall.” Cope said to be chosen is a feather in the cap for the board, and they’re very proud to host the wall.
