day March 9, on 120 Fox networks and stations in 125 countries and on 90 National Geographic channels in more than 180 countries. The show, though, is far more than the impressive numbers a media giant can deliver. It is what’s at the heart of it that excites: an unquenchable thirst for discovery. That’s where host Neil deGrasse Tyson comes in. If you haven’t encountered him, Tyson, 55, is basically the only rock star astrophysicist around. The Bronx-raised scientist has a direct yet fun knack for explaining complex matters. “The cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be,” Tyson says in the show’s introduction. “Come with me.” With that, viewers embark on a journey that traverses time and space. For those wondering, the 13episode series is a revival — but with new material — of Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.” That 13episode series was PBS’ highest-rated series until “The Civil War” a decade later. Sagan’s widow, Ann Druyan, is executive producer, writer and director. She joins Seth MacFarlane (yes,

he of “Family Guy” and “Ted”), another executive producer and a fan of the original series. “I had seen it as a child, and when I was in high school, saw it again and was able to process it in even more depth,” MacFarlane says at a press conference. MacFarlane invited Tyson to lunch. As soon as they had appetizers, MacFarlane broached the subject of “Cosmos” and where it would air. At this point, Fox wasn’t considered. “I said while National Geographic and Discovery Channel were some of the places that it was being considered to be pitched to, and are great networks, in a way, you’re sort of preaching to the converted. And wouldn’t it be nice to broaden it a little bit even more?” MacFarlane recalls. The pilot is a riot of colors and texture and of different genres. Tyson leads us on the ship of imagination, “where we can go anywhere.” The set has portals opening above, to the future, and below, to the past. The photos of space are so vibrant that viewers will want wall-sized TVs if only to gaze at Jupiter.

He developed a viral infection that got to the point where he explained, in a statement he issued through NBC, “I simply couldn’t do my job because my eyes had become so blurry, watery and sensitive to light.” And as for the person who filled in for him hosting the primetime and late-night Olympic telecasts as he recovered, Costas added, “The last thing I want is to go through the rest of my life owing Matt Lauer a bunch of favors.” I know Philip Seymour Hoffman made many movies, but did he ever do any television work? — Carol Davies, Santa Clara, Calif. In fact, his first listed credit on film is a 1991 episode of “Law & Order” ... a series that hosted countless New York-based actors, logically enough for where it was filmed. The story was titled “The Violence of Summer,” and it also featured Samuel L. Jackson as a guest. Most of Hoffman’s subsequent work would be on the big screen and the theatrical stage, but he returned to TV occasionally. He was in a 1994 version of the classic story “The Yearling”; he was part of the ensemble cast of the 1997 miniseries “Liberty! The American Revolution”; he starred with spouses Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, among others, in the 2005 HBO project “Empire Falls”; and he lent his voice to a 2009 episode of the animated series “Arthur.” At the time of his death, Hoffman was readying a Showtime comedy series titled “Happyish.” I saw a recent comment about the lack of holiday movies this

As for “A Christmas Carol,” it was around in various forms, since we ran into the Alastair Sim and George C. Scott versions plus Albert Finney’s musical “Scrooge” ourselves. It’s true that the animated “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol” wasn’t shown this past holiday season, though NBC gave it a now-rare broadcast network showing the year before ... but it’s a bit general to infer that “the other holiday favorites” weren’t around, since others such as “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “White Christmas” and “A Christmas Story” turned up as usual. I was wondering if “Perception” and “Royal Pains” were coming back and if so, when. — Kathleen Gummere, Springerville, Ariz. “Perception” already has returned to TNT on Tuesdays, and “Royal Pains” will have a sixth season that’s likely to start on USA Network in the summer, as that show traditionally has ... though it did have a one-shot winter telecast with a seasonally oriented story in December 2012. Can you tell me if there will be a Season 2 of HBO’s series “Family Tree”? — Sue Kelly, Alpena, Mich. There won’t. It was one season and out for the documentarylike comedy that included Christopher Guest among its creators and executive producers. After past weeks in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Detroit, ABC’s late-night talk host brings “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to Austin, Texas, for five programs starting Monday, March 10. The timing isn’t random: It coincides with the city’s popular annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival that showcases new entertainment and technology. “It’s a big part of the reason I’m going there,” the friendly Kimmel confirms of the event ... adding that during a recent Austin visit, “we went to four different barbecue places, and I ate more than a full meal at each one of them. They rolled us to the airport, but I had some great stuff.” That wasn’t Kimmel’s first visit there, nor will it be his first time at SXSW. “It’s a great town, and it’s a great festival,” he reflects. “I’m from Las Vegas, so I love the neon in the desert at night and the atmosphere in general. The people are very friendly. I can’t think of a better place to spend a whole week. “They have a phrase they use frequently there, which is ‘Keep Austin Weird.’ We’re planning to inject a little more weirdness.” Part of the fun of SXSW, says Kimmel, is the element of surprise. So many people from so many different walks of show business — and of life in

Jimmy Kimmel general — attend the event, it’s hard to predict whose paths will cross. That could play out in the guests who turn up on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” during the week. “We could bring guests in if we wanted to, but we don’t want to do that,” Kimmel explains. “We want to get people who live in, or are associated with, Austin. Or who are there specifically for South by Southwest. We’re trying to make the show special and unique to the city and what’s going on there.” Kimmel notes that Austin is “a college town first and foremost, and I think a lot of those students decided to stay after they graduated. There’s a real artistic flair to almost everything there. You don’t see too many crappy-looking signs on buildings. People take extra time and make things fun or funny or stylish, and I love that kind of thing.”
