Attract hummingbirds with plants By KEVIN HOWELL Staff Writer
Have an affinity for hummingbirds, but just can’t seem to find any around your home? There are ways to attract the tiny fliers and keep them coming back time and again. According to the Hummingbird Society website, hummingbirdsociety.org, hummingbirds can be found in a wide variety of environments, but their source of nutrition is primarily the same— nectar from flowers. They also need places to perch and rest during the day and to sleep at night, usually trees or large plants such as cacti, and nearly all must bathe regularly. Plants According to hummingbirds.net, hummingbirds begin to appear in Ohio from northward migration in late March to midApril and begin their southward migration at the end of summer.
and coral bells; and annuals such as fuchsia, petunia and various salvia species. She said many of the plants that attract butterflies also attract hummingbirds. Green noted that the plants can be grown in a garden or in window boxes, depending on where one wants to attract the birds. She advised avoiding pesticides which can be harmful to the birds. Green said the plants will naturally attract the hummingbirds will little other work required by the homeowner. “It’s pretty easy to do,” she said. “Once you get plants in, they’ll come.”
Feeders To make your home and garden particularly appealing, the Hummingbird Society suggests in addition to growing enticing plants, enthusiasts should provide water for bathing, preferably very shallow, moving water or a spray mist, since hummers, more than most birds, need to bathe regularly due to the sticky nature of nectar. The Hummingbird Society also suggests placing nesting material, such as Hummer Helper,” near a feeder to attract females to nest nearby, making it more likely to see them during the five- to seven-week brooding period. Hummingbirds do not use birdhouses because they are not cavity nesters, according to the website. But a popular attraction is the feeder, Green said. The feeders should be put out in a timely manner, not too early nor too late, she said.
Dicentra, or old-fashioned bleeding heart (forefront)
One of the easiest ways to attract hummingbirds is by feeding them naturally. The birds favor plants that usually have long, tubular blossoms that are red, orange, yellow or blue with lots of concentrated nectar, according to the Hummingbird Society. Diane Green, manager at DeHoff’s in Alliance, said local offerings can include vines such as honeysuckle and morning glory; trees and shrubs such as azalea, butterfly bush, flowering quince and weigela; perennials such as bee balm, hosta

“It will keep the birds too long and they don’t get to their destination before the cold,” she said. Feeders can be filled with sugar water, changing frequently, Green said, noting that homemade mixtures do not have the preservatives which can be bad for the birds. A basic recipe suggested by the Hummingbird Society to attract hummingbirds features a cup of cane sugar with three or four cups of spring (preferred) or tap water, free of red food coloring. An extra cup of water can help dilute the mixture if it
is drawing too many bees. The mixture should be changed every four to five days—more frequently if temperatures are over 90 degrees. If the liquid appears cloudy or mold is visible, the feeder needs washed thoroughly right away. The best feeders should be ones the enthusiast can easily clean and matches the size of the hummingbird population. Feeders must be cleaned between refillings and never “topped off” without cleaning. Use a mild detergent and water; rinse thoroughly. About once a month, soak the feeder in a solution of bleach and water (1 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water); rinse very thoroughly. Feeders should have ports above the pool of liquid to avoid drips. They should be placed at least 4 feet above the ground so they are beyond the reach of cats and other predators and, if possible, in a shady spot. More feeders will support more hummers and help reduce territoriality.
Hummingbird Predators The hummingbird’s small stature makes it especially susceptible to a variety of predators and dangers. According to the Hummingbird Society, cats, both domestic and feral, are probably the most common predators of nonnested hummingbirds. To reduce the risks from cats, feeders should be hung high—at least 5 feet above ground— and preferably positioned so that a stalking cat is visible.
Red petunia
Other birds, such as hawks, also provide a danger to the hummingbird, catching and eating them, while eggs and chicks in the nest are often vulnerable to other birds such as blue jays and crows. Due to their size, hummingbirds also have unusual predators— namely insects. Praying mantises will position themselves on popular feeders and strike at the hummingbirds, spider webs used in the construction of nests can trap the bird and bees or wasps can out-maneuver and attack it, the venom being fatal due to the bird’s small body mass. khowell@salemnews.net

Outwitting the squirrels (NAPS)—Bird feeding can be a fulfilling hobby, if you know how to outsmart a clever squirrel who’s eating your birdseed. These tips can help: 1) Baffles: Install baffles, at least 15 inches wide and sloped, between the top of the feeder and its hanger on a hanging feeder or between the ground and the feeder for feeders on posts. 2) Spinners: String spinners on a horizontal line. 3) Location: Mount bird feeders on a smooth metal pole at least six feet high and prune any branches within a 12-foot radius. 4) Feeders: • Metal Feeders help minimize the damage from hungry squirrels. • Wire Cages placed around a bird feeder will keep squirrels out and allow smaller birds to continue feeding but prevent larger birds from accessing the feeder. • Slammer Feeders designed with doors triggered by a large bird’s or squirrel’s weight close and hamper access to seed. • Interactive Bird Feeders such as the Squirrel Boss Bird Feeder. This humane and effective squirrel-proof bird feeder has a remote control operated by you from inside your home that gives the squirrel a harmless static shock correction that “tingles” but doesn’t hurt the squirrel in any way. For more information, visit www.squirrelboss.com or call (888) 476-9499. 5) Seed: Squirrels are less enticed by nyger, millet, safflower, canary and canola seeds. Adding capsaicin to birdseed can also deter squirrels.
To keep squirrels out of your bird feeder, remove debris and spilled seed from the ground around the feeder that could be attracting them.

6 design trends for 2015 (BPT) - As the new year kicks off, it’s the premier time to refresh and refocus on certain aspects of your life ... and the home is no exception. Say goodbye to lackluster interiors as renowned interior designer and DIY television personality, Taniya Nayak, has forecasted the top trends for 2015 that will be sure to enhance and revive any home. Deep, rich hues Be bold with shadowy and opulent tones; there are many ways to infuse a rich color scheme into your space. “Don’t be intimidated by dark hues,” says Nayak. “Incorporate shades from the same color family throughout a room with a coordinating accent wall, rug and decorative pieces - such as pillows and blankets. This creates a bold, yet harmonizing visual.” “The concept of a ‘pop’ of color is blown up in 2015,” adds Nayak. “We’re seeing deep, rich hues adorning walls, lavishly upholstered furniture pieces, window treatments and area rugs. This year, we like to say ‘go bold or go home.’” When painting with deep colors, imperfections are more visible than with lighter shades. To ensure your painting project is flawless, use FrogTape brand painter’s tape to achieve sharp paint lines. The tape is treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, which prevents paint bleed, leaving you with an impressive, crisp edge.
Gallery walls Create a room that’s uniquely yours by making a gallery wall with items of your choice. Display an array of mirrors, framed family photos, sketches or even postcards - the key is to be creative and be yourself! “2015 is all about you,” Nayak explains. “Hanging a variety of frames or objects in a well thought-out cluster on the wall provides the perfect place to showcase pieces that are important and meaningful. When people walk into your home, they’ll know exactly what you love.”
Bold patterns in neutral colors Although neutrals provide a calm palette, it’s possible to infuse bold statements into these rooms, as well, with the use of patterns. Revitalize your room with a geometric rug in an earth tone, and also add window treatments with a daring floral design in a complementary, yet understated, color. When mixing prints, pair structured, linear patterns with organic ones for a 8 | all about home/april 2015 page
look that’s polished, and not too “matchy.” “This is a beautiful way to add drama and what appears to be ‘texture’ to a space,” adds Nayak.
60s mod The retro panache of mid-century modern decor will perk up rooms with its soft, sculptural lines, woven upholstery and bright accessories in geometric shapes. Search for vintage furniture pieces like rounded chairs and button-cushion couches with short, tapered legs to add a sense of authenticity. “We are going retro mod way back to the 60s where design was about curvy forms, vibrant colors and eccentric patterns,” Nayak says. “Be prepared to leave your design fears at the door and go full throttle with the bright and loud elements found in the mod movement. “
Organic elements This year, mount antlers above your mantel; or create centerpieces with shells, metallic leaves or branches for a rustic vibe. With these earthy components juxtaposed against woodsy furniture and ivory tones, you’ll create an impressive, outdoorsy aesthetic. “It’s easy to bring nature and organic structures into your home,” Nayak assures. “Leave linear styles out of the equation. Instead, think of free flowing shapes, colors found in nature and the peaceful serenity associated with the outdoors. The goal is to evoke the same emotional responses throughout your home.” Copper “Each year we see a particular metal rise to the top of every designer’s list; and this year, it’s all about copper,” Nayak says. Copper is a captivating metallic that adds a modern edge to even the simplest scheme. Small pieces make a big statement, so subtly pepper in copper pieces to your decor, like light fixtures, planters or table settings. Display copper cookware in your kitchen - it’s a great way to add a touch of glamour without being gaudy. 2015 is full of impressive design trends. Use Nayak’s expertise, and this year, your home will serve as a canvas for selfexpression, creativity and style.

Put some PEX into your plumbing By KATIE WHITE Staff Writer
Sweating a copper wire isn’t generally something a homeowner wants to do. That’s one reason why PEX tubing is becoming more popular. PEX tubing has been around for decades, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that Gary Eichler, owner of Eichler Construction, noticed an increase in interest for the material among Columbiana County homeowners. “Homeowners can work this stuff. Not many people know how to sweat copper. It’s a lot more consumer friendly,” he said. The tubing can be easily fitted into a wall without the sweating required to maneuver a copper wire into place. Sweating is when heat is used to make the copper more flexible, and can be somewhat of a fire hazard. Eichler said sweating one copper fitting alone can take between 20 and 50 minutes while a PEX fitting can be installed in about a minute. PEX also requires fewer fittings, and those fittings are also easier to install. A sharkbite fitting for PEX can be easily pushed into place.
10 | all about home/april 2015 page
“Everyone can put in a sharkbite ... some contractors call it the lazy man’s plumbing but I call it the easy man’s plumbing,” he joked. At roughly $9.50 for a 50-foot-roll of tubing, PEX is also more economical than copper, which runs at about $50 to $70 for one foot, he said. Fittings for PEX are more expensive than copper fittings, but require less labor to install than copper fittings. PEX consists of a crosslinked high density polyethylene polymer that allows it to endure freeze and thaw weather cycles better than copper because of its durability and flexibility. “It will swell a little bit to where copper will not swell, it just splits,” he said. Eichler said his company uses PEX about 90 percent more than copper and actually only uses copper if requested by a customer. The company is currently in the process of a bathroom and kitchen remodel for one customer using only PEX tubing. PEX is especially popular in local home construction involving the installation of floor radiant heat systems, he added.
“As far as heating bills it’s more economical to do a radiant floor heating system. It’s more expensive to install at first but it pays you back within the years,” he said. When it comes to commercial construction, contractors are still opting for copper plumbing, although he is not sure of the reason, he added. Brent Yoder, residential service manager for Ellyson Plumbing and Heating in Salem, said the company has had “really good luck” with PEX tubing. “We use it pretty much on all new installations now. It is pretty forgiving. If you get into cold spaces, it’s not like copper where it would expand and burst,” he said. Yoder said they are seeing PEX used more and more in new construction, mainly because of its lower cost. “It does help bring the cost of new installation down a bit,” he said. The company provides service to residents in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, and also Alliance. kschwendeman@mojonews.com

Inexpensive patio spruce-ups By LAURA REED Staff Writer
A chimenea is a type of portable fire place shaped like a pot belly stove and is typically made of clay or metal
With the recent explosion of websites such as Pinterest inexpensive patio spruce-up ideas are endless.
As the weather gets warmer it’s only natural that most people head outside to enjoy the sun. The gathering point for most families is typically a patio or porch.
Last summer my husband and I redid our patio. We did all of the work ourselves with the total of supplies coming to a little more than $1,000. The bulk of our work included pouring concrete to increase the size of our patio and adding a wooden pergola overhead. Concrete cost $300 and the wood for the pergola roofing was also $300.
I have memories of my parents enjoying the newspaper and coffee as they relaxed in the comfortable temperatures of an early spring or summer day on their sun porch. Now, my husband and I enjoy doing the same and hosting family get-togethers on our newlyrenovated back patio.
Pergolas are a style of archway that offer shade to patios or gardens. They are composed of wooden posts that support cross-beams on top. We liked the unique look this covering offered and even fitted clear polycarbonate roofing over the beams so that we can be outside in the rain. Another option would be to add a tinted covering if your location is in direct sun for most of the day.
Patios and porches are always a popular topic in home remodeling. For many houses the patio is the first area guests see and it gives a glimpse into the style of your home, so it’s important that this area be inviting.
Once the base of the patio was complete we purchased a set of patio furniture from Amazon.com for $430, which included free shipping. The set included two chairs, two foot stools, one couch and a table. While $430 is quite the bargain, the option of making your own furniture is a nice alternative too and can even be less expensive. For instance, wood pallets have taken over the decorating scene and pallet furniture is at the height of its popularity. Pallets can be used in building almost anything and they have a great rustic look. Most businesses that use pallets will give them away for free, which leaves tools as the only expense for the builder. The style and look of the furniture is up to you. Instructables.com offers a large selection of ideas and how-to videos concerning the topic of making your own furniture. Any form of recycled decorating is a nice alternative to buying, and don’t worry about the imperfections, that’s what makes the piece unique. Another item that makes a nice addition to patios is a light or heat source. Whether it be a brick oven or tiki torches, fire light adds a nice warmth to patios at night. One of my favorite items to fulfill this need is the chimenea. A chimenea is a type of

portable fire place shaped like a pot belly stove and is typically made of clay or metal. The clay chimeneas are more expensive and commonly cost more than $400, but the metal versions can be found for $200 or less on Amazon.com. Flowers are another obvious choice for brightening up a patio. They don’t always have to be planted in conventional pots and planters though. Using drawers from old dressers or wash stands as a vessel for planting can be a fun idea. If you don’t have any old drawers they’re easy to find at antique malls. You can liven them up with a fresh coat of bright paint or leave
them as is for a vintage look. Either way, they will definitely add a whimsical touch to your setting. When it comes to patio makeovers keeping it simple is best. Why pay a hefty price for furniture and decorations that you can fashion yourself out of recyclable materials? If you create a comfortable atmosphere your company is sure to feel right at home. newsroom@reviewonline.com

Outdoor spaces
(Family Features) Inspired by neighbors, home improvement shows and social media channels like Pinterest and Houzz, today’s homeowners are entering the deck planning and building process more informed than ever before. But sorting through this wealth of information and inspiration can make it hard to decipher what’s really hot for today’s outdoor spaces — and to choose what’s right for your home. Surveying the wide variety of options is the first step in deciding how you’ll approach designing your outdoor space. Start by considering some of the top influences expected to dominate the outdoor living landscape this season, according to the experts at Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing. Designing outside the box. Gone are the days of simple squared-off decks and basic slab patios. Regardless of the size of the yard - or budget - homeowners today are thinking and building beyond the basic square space. Remodelers and architects report increased interest from customers in decks with multiple levels, curves, cantilevers, pergolas and even walls to create three-dimensional interest and define different functional areas. Bringing the indoors out. The lines between indoors and out will continue to blur as homeowners look to extend the style, comfort and function of their interior spaces to their outdoor living areas. More and more indoor activities are migrating outside with the addition of features such as outdoor kitchens, dining nooks and fireplaces. Demand also is up for features like integrated benches with cushions and accent pillows, storage components and lighting, along with accessories such as ornamental post caps and railing with decorative balusters similar to those found inside the home. Tropical staycation. From New England to Southern California, the look of the tropics will dominate as a top outdoor design scheme. Materials that evoke the ambiance of an exotic island getaway are all the rage, from tiki torches, cabanas and waterfalls to deck boards featuring warm colors and multi-colored streaking inspired by tropical hardwoods. High performance, low maintenance. While aesthetics drive many deck-building decisions, performance is just as important. Increasingly, homeowners are seeking high-performance, low maintenance materials that allow them to spend more time enjoying their outdoor living space than maintaining it. This motivation has contributed to the continued innovation and popularity of composite decking and railing. Unlike wood, high-performance wood alternative decking such as Trex resists fading, staining, scratching and mold. Upkeep is hasslefree with no sanding, staining or painting required, and food and drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water. To see examples of outdoor living settings featuring this year’s top looks, visit the Inspiration Gallery at www.trex.com.

SANTA CLARA has been voted the Area’s Best Manufactured Home Community!
By JO ANN BOBBY-GILBERT Staff Writer LISBON – In days gone by, when homes were heated by coal furnaces and lit with oil lamps, an annual spring cleaning after a long winter was a necessity to clear away soot and oily residue from walls, floors and curtains. Today’s more efficient furnaces and electric lights have lessened that need, but there are still folks who like the idea of a fresh start each spring: Sparkling windows, clean walls and fresh draperies. In the past, when more women were stay-at-home housewives, they did the heavy housecleaning themselves, but in today’s two-income households, hiring out the work is much more common. Independent housekeeper Sheila Backus said it isn’t often that she is asked to do a thorough spring cleaning for the 25 to 30 customers she services. “About one or two ask me to do the walls, curtains and furniture,” she said, adding that, she cleans things as she notes they need attention so “most don’t need spring cleaning, but some do.” Although Backus usually works alone, when someone needs walls to be cleaned, she enlists the help of a friend. She offered one tip for helping keep the home tidier in between cleanings: Keep your furnace filter clean. “You can tell when you constantly have dust that the filter needs to be cleaned,” she advised.

Backus works “by the job,” meaning she charges one set
fee per home instead of by the hour. The cost averages at least $50 but can range between $40 and $60, depending on the size of the home and the work that needs to be done. Amanda Bolen, owner of A&A Cleaning Specialist in Canfield said, “They do!” when asked if people still ask for deep spring cleaning. She said her staff usually gets requests for a one-time topto-bottom cleaning in the spring and then again in the fall prior to the holidays, which includes windows, walls and sometimes carpets, which are subcontracted out.
Spring Has Sprung at DeHoffs!
Other customers ask to have their cabinets cleaned inside and out and then treated with oil on the outside, as well as cleaning of light fixtures and ceiling fans, which Bolen said are dismantled and cleaned really well. She finds that her clientele is equally divided between the elderly and those who have two-income families and don’t have time to do their own cleaning. Bolen believes every home should have a deep cleaning twice a year, at least, to eliminate germs, admitting, “I have four little boys and two pit bulls. I do it once a month (at my home). I want to make sure it’s disinfected.” Her advice when cleaning: Complete one room at a time instead of skipping from room to room, especially if taking everything down to clean it. “That’s really the easiest way. You can get side-tracked otherwise,” Bolen said. Cleaning on a regular basis is also a good idea, she said. “You’ve got to get down and dirty and really clean so it doesn’t get overwhelming,” she advised, saying some of her clients call in the spring and then again in the fall because they have been so busy over the summer that they let the cleaning go and it “gets away from them.” Her company charges by the job, depending on the size of the house, with free estimates given upon a home visit. jgilbert@ mojonews.com

Landscaping makeover
(BPT) - Low- and no-maintenance features top the list when making over outdoor living spaces because less time maintaining means more time enjoying. Low-maintenance landscaping outranks native plantings, water features and food/vegetable gardens according to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey. Landscape professionals love to share their secrets and show off their craft when redesigning outdoor spaces for low or no maintenance. Armed with know-how and using sweat equity, do-ityourselfers also can employ tips that professionals use for a no-maintenance landscape makeover.
Landscaping with hardscapes Landscape professionals use retaining wall systems for a variety of landscaping solutions. Segmental retaining walls are commonly used to transition elevations, shore up slopes along foundations and define spaces such as creating planters, tree rings and other features. “Hardscape products like retaining walls and pavers are important tools for both landscapers and do-it-yourselfers in creating low-maintenance landscapes,” says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. “With just the standard VERSA-LOK retaining wall unit, you can easily create seat walls, curved couches, columns and other features.” Retaining wall systems combined with concrete pavers can be used to create beautiful raised patios, replacing high-maintenance wooden decks, says Arnold. In addition to being as cost effective as a wooden deck, a raised patio offers several advantages. 18 | all about home/april 2015 page
“A deck railing can be replaced with wrought iron fencing or a low seat wall so the view is unobstructed,” Arnold says. “Raised patios also look great with a contrasting paver course or rock barrier for potted plants, and steps to the ground can be created with retaining wall units.” Retaining wall units and interlocking concrete pavers come in a variety of colors, shapes and textures to complement any landscape design and are often used to create design continuity in outdoor spaces. Tree rings can be coordinated or colorcontrasted with raised patios, retaining walls and other hardscapes. Permeable pavers are an environmentally sound and lowmaintenance solution where impervious surface limits, storm water management, water quality and water conservation are issues. “Permeable pavers are a best practice for storm water management and quality issues because they prevent runoff and let rain water infiltrate in place naturally,” says Burt Plett, product manager of Willow Creek Paving Stones. “Permeable pavers reduce the need for irrigation in drought-prone areas, unlike poured concrete or asphalt.” It’s best to consult a landscape professional who is experienced in installing permeable paving systems so that they work properly and consistently, Plett says. Low-maintenance landscaping practices Landscaping practices can make it easier to control weeds and manage lawn care as well. The use of rock mulch and natural rock in gardens and beds, as walkways and as stepping stones offers an attractive solution to weed control and also
lessens the need for irrigation. At least three inches of rock mulch or four inches of natural mulch will prevent weeds. A landscape fabric under stepping stones and rock mulch offers even more insurance against weeds. A simple way to cut down on trimming is to add a course of pavers along the bottom of a retaining wall, tree ring or planter so the mower can get close to the wall, says Arnold. Maintenance-free outdoor accessories Selecting maintenance-free outdoor furniture and accessories is an easy way to make over a space. Outdoor furniture made of recycled HDPE like Comfort Craft requires no storage or maintenance other than cleanup with soap and water. Unlike wood, Comfort Craft furniture won’t chip, splint, crack or rot and never needs painting. Hardscape kits - containing everything needed to create a fireplace, firepit, water feature or grill island - are some of the most popular low-maintenance landscaping products, Arnold says. “Using easy-to-install kits like those from Willow Creek Paving Stones, homeowners and contractors alike can create beautiful features such as grill islands, bar islands, fire pits and fireplaces that are long-lasting and low-maintenance,” Arnold says.

Preventing fleas and ticks (NAPS)—When it comes to your pet’s health, investing the time and effort to use tick and flea preventatives can really pay dividends. For starters, such treatment will do more than just eliminate your pet’s itchy fleas and prevent allergic reactions. The right medication can also prevent fleas, ticks and other insects from biting your pet, and prevent these pests from getting inside your home, on your furniture and in your bedding. Prevention Beats Treatment Experts agree that fleas and ticks are stubborn parasites that can cause discomfort and transmit dangerous diseases. They can also be difficult to get rid of. That’s why prevention really is the best medicine.
Many pet owners believe that a topical application offers the best protection against ticks and fleas, but ingredients that make the better products effective can also cause them to be expensive. Now, thanks to a new product, it’s possible to provide your pet with exceptional protection for up to 40 percent less than vet prices.* The product, called PetArmor® Plus, contains fipronil, the No. 1 vet-recommended active ingredient, and (s)-methoprene, which prevents eggs from hatching and growing. PetArmor Plus provides the same flea and tick protection as FRONTLINE® Plus but at a significant savings.
1340 State Route 14 Columbiana, OH 44425 330.482.5163 800.891.5163
As an added plus, the product is safe to use in a multipet household. However, pets should be separated for 24 hours following application to ensure that the product has dried completely, thus helping to reduce the chance of other pets ingesting the product off of the treated pet. Available in three application doses, it can be used for dogs over 4 lbs. or cats over 1.5 lbs. and 8 weeks of age or older. In addition, it can be used on breeding, pregnant and lactating animals.
Additional Tips •It’s important to read a product’s label and prepare to follow directions thoroughly before applying any powerful medicine to your pet. Even if you have a product made specifically for dogs, applying it correctly is still essential. •Buy the right product for the right species. Always choose a cat product for cats and a dog product for dogs. These products are different formulations based on the pet’s species and should never be used interchangeably. •Know your pet’s weight. •Consider your pet’s age. PetArmor® Plus is available in four weight breaks for dogs and one weight break for cats and should only be used on pets 8 weeks of age or older. To learn more, visit www.petarmor.com.

A more productive home office (BPT) - It’s a common piece of advice from effective homebased workers: start each day as if you were going to work in an office outside your home (translation - take a shower and don’t work in your jammies). The philosophy behind this tidbit is easy to understand. By dressing professionally, you’ll feel more professional and your productivity and quality of work will keep pace. The same axiom can apply to your home office. Is it tucked in a dark corner of the spare bedroom? Is your desk beside a bed covered in old toys? Is your filing cabinet stuffed in the closet under clothes that no one has worn since the first Bush presidency? If your home office doesn’t feel professional and uplifting, how productive and happy will you be spending eight or more hours a day there? Decorating your home office isn’t an art, but following some basic principles of office design can help create an organized, effective and productivity-enhancing space.
Choose a wall color that facilitates focus. Even if your home office will be in the guest room that you just painted last year, it may be a good idea to repaint. Not only does a fresh coat of paint make a room feel energized and new, repainting gives you the opportunity to put a color on the wall that’s office-appropriate. In an interview by Chris Bailey of the blog “A Life of Productivity,” color psychologist and author Angela Wright suggests that your home office color scheme needs to match the type of work you do because different colors create different effects. For example, Wright says, blue might be stimulating if you do a lot of mental work in your home office. Additionally, yellow
could encourage creativity, and green might be soothing if your work is particularly stressful and balance is important.
Luxuriate in light. “You are stuck in your office - albeit at home - all day, working and slaving away, staring at the same wall and some bland office furniture you got at a garage sale,” writes Herman Chan in Home Business Magazine. “Spending all those hours in the same spot, it would behoove you to splurge on one luxury piece.” Chan suggests an inspiring piece of furniture, but you can also create a luxe effect - with only a modest “splurge” - by decorating with lighting elements such as a skylight. “The mental and physical health benefits of natural light and fresh air are well documented,” says Ross Vandermark of VELUX America, makers of Energy Star-qualified skylights. “Energy efficient venting skylights not only make your home and your home office feel more open, airy, bright and productive, they can help you control heating, cooling and lighting costs, too.” Add a solar-powered fresh air skylight and an energy-efficient solar-powered blind to your home office and the products, as well as the installation, can be eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit as a green home improvement. Ground-floor offices can benefit from SUN TUNNEL tubular skylights. Visit whyskylights.com or energystar.gov to learn more about energy-efficient skylights. If your home office happens to be located in a renovated attic space, roof windows, which are very much like skylights but are in-reach, can offer natural light and fresh air plus access to

the roof for debris removal, maintenance or for emergency egress.
Organize with attractive storage. If your idea of home office storage includes the cardboard boxes you used to transport files from the last job you had outside your home, it’s time to revisit your organizational plan. A cluttered, disorganized home office can cause you to misplace important documents and can make you feel overwhelmed. As more people have begun working from home, office furniture manufacturers have branched out from the sterile-looking metal storage units ubiquitous in workplaces across the country. Today, it’s easy to find attractive storage options that fit with virtually any home office decor. If you just can’t find a file cabinet that speaks to your soul, why not try some alternative storage options? Move that beautiful sideboard you inherited from grandma - that just never fit anywhere else in your house - into your home office and use it for filing. Not in love with any of the desk options available at your local office store? Hit an antique shop and find an antique desk or even a dining table that you adore. Remember to keep furnishings and storage solutions size-appropriate for the room so your home office doesn’t feel crowded. Working from home offers many advantages, including the opportunity to decorate your home office the way you want. By following some basic steps and incorporating your own personality, you can create a home office where you’ll be productive and happy throughout the work day.

Creating the perfect porch (BPT) - Your porch should be a warm, welcoming outdoor living space that offers comfort and helps make a house a home. Whether you want to remodel your porch from the ground up, or just give it a refreshing new look and feel, it’s easier than you think to create a perfect porch.
with great warmth and charm. For a picturesque porch, enclose columns in Kleer Post Wraps to protect them from the elements while adding wood’s natural, finished look. To complete your perfect porch, dress up nearby windows and doors with distinctive touches that complement the look and feel of your outdoor living space.
Start with a Kleer deck as enchanting flooring for your remodeled porch, choosing from the rich, nature-inspired color palettes available for the Sierra Series and Coastal Series Decking.
High-impact, budget-friendly ideas include adding Mid-America Siding Components’ richly-colored shutters with matching window headers to enhance your porch’s warmth and curb appeal.
Sierra offers deep, solid earth tones with wood grain textures such as Sequoia, plus streaked tropical wood looks, such as Golden Teak.
The sophisticated Flat Panel and geometric-style Classic Dentil headers pair perfectly with decorative shutters like the classic Open Louver or Old World-style Board-nBatten.
The Coastal Series offers charming Cobblestone and serene Sand Dune hues, which give your porch a relaxing feel reminiscent of a seaside resort.
Another quick, easy upgrade is an inviting door surround in cream, white or another neutral color to enhance porch aesthetics.
Framing your porch, like a picture for the world to see, is easy with Kleer Trimboard. Add elegant white or colorfully painted accent trim around the top, bottom and sides of the porch using durable cellular PVC trimboards in a variety of sizes.
Adding a door surround is a natural way to create that “welcome home” feeling too.
This trim can even be crafted into ornate gingerbread or curved using heat-bending to make soaring arches. Kleer Mouldings can be readily cut so that you can add eye-catching detail anywhere.
Designed for easy living, Tapco’s enduring Kleer and Mid-America brand solutions never require painting or wood’s time-intensive upkeep. Whether you want to transform your porch into a cozy gathering spot or grand wrap-around retreat, Tapco’s exterior products can put the perfect low-maintenance outdoor living space within your reach.
Using Kleer Beaded Sheets, you can build a porch ceiling

Quality time in the kitchen (BPT) - The average American spends an hour a day in the kitchen preparing food and cleaning up afterward, according to the American Time Use Survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Add in the time it takes to put groceries away, load and unload dishwashers, organize cabinets and pantries or just hang out, and you spend a whole lot of time in your kitchen. But do you really enjoy that time? Whether cooking is your favorite activity or you would rather clean the bathroom, the livability and usability of your kitchen can directly affect how you feel about the time you spend there. If you’re considering a kitchen renovation - among the most popular and profitable of all home improvements - keep in mind the value of upgrades that will enhance the efficiency, practicality and beauty of the space. This type of improvement will not only pay off at the time of resale, but can improve the time you spend in your kitchen. Here are three key kitchen upgrades that can elevate the appeal and usability of your kitchen: Improved natural lighting and ventilation
The positive effects of natural lighting on mood are well documented. If your kitchen is small and dark, it can feel dingy and tired, no matter how new your appliances or shiny your granite countertops. Consider adding natural light sources such as

Sinks and faucets are functional essentials for a kitchen, but they can - and should - also make a design statement. Replacing a basic, dated faucet and swapping out an older sink can have a significant impact on the overall look and utility of a kitchen - for a fraction of the cost of grander renovations. It’s possible to find new sinks that fit virtually any design taste. Stainless steel provides a sleek, modern look while delivering outstanding durability. Apron sinks, which come in a variety of materials, blend well with a rustic design theme. Undermount and integrated sinks eliminate unsightly edges on countertops. You can also find a variety of basin styles in virtually every material, from single to double basins and prep sinks.

What’s more, if you opt for an Energy Star-qualified, solarpowered fresh air skylight, like those made by Velux, you can improve your kitchen’s ventilation as well. These skylights create a chimney effect that passively vents fumes, odor, humidity and cooking smoke from the kitchen without the need for a noisy, less efficient exhaust fan. Adding energy efficient solar blinds can allow you to control the amount of sunlight that enters your kitchen, closing the blinds to keep the room cooler in summer and opening them to admit more warming light in winter. Operated by remote control, solar skylights and blinds, as well as the installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Visit www.veluxusa.com to learn more.
Whatever sink you choose, be sure to accent it with a hightech faucet. Pull-down faucets make cleaning and filling pots a breeze, while touch-free faucets allow you to turn the flow of water off and on without ever touching the faucet itself - thereby avoiding the spread of germs. A vast array of colors, styles and handle types ensure you can find an upscale faucet that improves usability and looks great in your kitchen.

vestment. Considering how much the average American family uses their refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and stove, improving the usability and efficiency of these appliances can both elevate your enjoyment of the kitchen and save you some money in the long run. In the typical American home, appliances represent 13 percent of the household’s total energy consumption, according to the Department of Energy. Replacing older appliances with newer, more energy-efficient models can reduce your energy costs. For example, replacing an older refrigerator with an Energy Star certified appliance could reduce your energy costs as much as $300 over the lifetime of the refrigerator, according to the Department of Energy. What’s more, newer appliances offer many of the high-tech features that make life in the kitchen easier, from touchscreen interfaces and temperature controls on dishwashers to Wi-Fi enabled refrigerators. Tips for a better garden (NAPS)—There may be few things more satisfying than growing colorful flowers or eating vegetables picked fresh from the garden. That might seem ambitious if you haven’t gardened before, but getting started this year need not be difficult. Just follow these simple gardening tips to enjoy the benefits of fresh air, gentle exercise and healthy produce: 1)Pick your spot with care. Plants need sun and water to survive. Vegetables and most flowers need full sun—at least six hours of sunlight every day during the growing season. Plant close to an outdoor water source to make hot weather watering easier. 2)Start with the soil. Because plants live by their roots, the most important part of any garden is below ground. Most soil around houses isn’t ideal for plants but can be improved by adding nutrient-rich organic matter, usually in the form of compost, shredded leaves or composted manure. Bagged soil mixes marked specifically for growing vegetables are ideal for containers. 3)Keep your first garden manageable. For beginners, try a plot 4 feet by 8 feet, or half a dozen good-sized (24–36”) containers. That’s enough to provide a satisfying harvest of herbs, greens or a few tomato plants while you get a feel for the amount of time and effort it takes to water and weed. Pots are the easiest to control soil, water and light. Creating a container garden of vegetables, herbs and patio flowers is a good place for novices to start.

4)Get a head start. Some vegetables and flowers may need to be started from seed 6–8 weeks before it’s safe to plant them outside. You’ll need to do this for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and petunias. But other favorites like zucchini, cucumbers, beans and sunflowers are easily sown in the ground with seed. You can learn more about starting and sowing seeds at www.burpee.com. Planting time will vary in each growing zone, but is generally best in the late spring. 5)Watch your garden grow. It’s fun for the whole family to observe seeds taking root and growing into plants. Be sure to water and weed regularly as you wait for the bounty of your first harvest. Burpee’s free Garden Time Planner app makes planting in specific garden regions easy. To download the app, buy nonGMO seeds and plants, or to access helpful “how-to” articles and videos, visit www.burpee.com or call (800) 888-1447.

Get a handle on household leaks (NAPS)—Over 1 trillion gallons of water are wasted in the United States every year from easy-to-fix household leaks. That is the amount of water used by more than 11 million homes every year! Leaks can be a real drain on resources and occur in a number of places at home, including faucets, showerheads, toilets, and outdoor spigots and irrigation systems. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense® program, common household leaks can also add 10 percent to a family’s water bill.
Replace: For old or inefficient fixtures that are not easily repaired, replace them with WaterSense-labeled models. Toilets, faucets and showerheads that earn the WaterSense label are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.
Finding and fixing leaks to save money and water does not have to be difficult. Just follow three simple steps: check, twist and replace. Check: Look at your water meter (usually outside your house) before and after two or more hours when no water is being used, perhaps while your family is at work or school. If the number has changed, there is likely a leak. To check for silent toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank and wait 10 minutes before flushing. If the color appears in the bowl before you flush, the toilet flapper probably needs to be replaced.

Twist: Remedy dripping pipes, fixtures or hoses by twisting a wrench to tighten the connections. If needed, twist pipe tape around shower fixture or hose connections to seal them. Teach kids to turn faucets and showers all the way off, and check washers and valves for persistent drips. If you’re not the “do-it-yourself” type or you have a bigger leak on your hands, you can consult a licensed plumber.

It’s all about comfort By LARRY SHIELDS Staff Writer
Mike Weikart, owner of Custom Comfort Systems in Columbiana, said spring is the time to check all air filters on air contiditioners and furnaces. It is important to make sure each piece of equipment has the filter with the proper MERV rating for maximum efficiency.
COLUMBIANA — Custom Comfort Systems has switched to Bryant Heating and Cooling as its top retail line after being the only Trane distributor in Columbiana County for 15 years. That’s the big news, owner Mike Weikart said, noting he hasn’t bought his previous suppliers product “in about a month” while noting Custom Comfort Systems has just completed its transition to the Bryant line. “Bryant is just a better product,” Weikart, said. Weikart has been with the business going back to 2000 when Custom Comfort Systems was located on state Route 45, south of Salem. He moved the company to Columbiana in 2006 and with springtime weather taking hold it is now without doubt the time to check and clean furnaces, air conditioners and filters, Weilart said. “Filters,” he said, “are in the basement and people don’t pay attention.” They have a whole aisle of air filters at Home Depot, Weikart said. “It’s amazing what’s out there,” he said noting the various rating numbers on the filters means the higher, the better. From its 8,000 square-foot facility, along with providing products, Custom Comfort Systems is service oriented and and has worked large industrial jobs like Hunt Engineering, churches, forms installed ducting and duct transitions in its fabrication shop. With four full-time employees, the work is deployed with a small fleet of service vans and Custom Comfort Service is authorized to provide an instant $300 rebate from Columbiana Gas for new gas furnaces and mail-in rebate from First Energy for electric heating. The company services Navion, Quiet Side, Rinnai and Bosch. Dow Davis is the territory manager for the Habegger Corporation and is coordinating the Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems switch at Custom Comfort Systems. Both he and Weikart are very high on the new Rinnai LS series of tankless water heaters. Weikart noted, “They are nice. You go away for a while and turn the gas off. Go away for winter and flip a switch and it’s instant hot water, right now. It’s pretty slick.”
Mike Weikart, right, owner of Custom Comfort Systems on state Route 14 in Columbiana, reviews information on his company’s switch to Bryant Heating and Cooling as its lead retail product line with Dow Davis, territory manager of the Habegger Corp.
Weikart said people are all about their comfort. If it’s about heat, they can turn on auxiliary heaters and get by for a while, Weikart said, but in the summertime when the heat is really on they want their air conditioning and they want it now. “They complain loudly when it’s hot,” he said, “when it’s a/c they say, ‘I want somebody now.’” That’s one reason why stand-by generators are popular and Custom Comfort Systems can supply mini-split ductless heating and cooling systems that are popular with churches and upstairs and elevated areas in residential homes. Davis, a gearhead, noted that Bryant Heating and Cooling is the oldest non-automotive sponsor of cars in the Indianapolis 500. Aside from the overall boost to the area’s economy, Weikart said the shale boom has had a secondary affect for Custom Comfort Systems. “Our trucks with tools average eight to nine gallons and the lower prices for gas ... that’s huge,” he said. An industry veteran, Dow said the technology integration is amazing. He pointed to WIFI thermostats that are “flying off the shelves” at Home Depot. Remote home management and Weikart said, “We can make is work with any system and set it up to have messages sent when a problem is detected.” Dow said home security companies are cashing in but recommends heating and cooling applications be installed by specialists in that industry.
There is a flow switch that keeps if the tankless heater off when there is no water in it. No water, it shuts off. Simple. Weikart said there is a plumbing kit that can be purchased to flush and clean it as maintenance is a little more frequent.
“There’s some really neat stuff out there,” he said. Weikart said his mother, Kathleen Yanek Weikart was a member of the SHS class of 1962, the first graduating class to cycle through the new building. As a 1989 Salem High grad, Wiekart belongs to the largest class to graduate.
Weikart put two in a nursing facility that replaced four large water-tank heaters. The tankless heater is capable of heating 7.4 gallons of water a minute up to shower temperature.
