This year’s county fair offers new attractions By RENEE COLEMAN-EICHLER Staff writer
LISBON — Its that time of year again when the summer months begin to wane and the Columbiana County Fair roars to life. Running July 30-Aug. 5, the Columbiana County Fair is planning to again delight fairgoers young and old with a jam packed schedule and new additions. The most notable addition is the River Valley Health PartnersEast Liverpool City HospitalRabbit Turkey Chicken Barn, otherwise known as the RTC Barn on fair schedules. The new barn, which replaces the much smaller Rabbit and Chicken Barn, is 56-by-100-foot, 12-foot high steel building, that will feature a concrete floor and removable cages. Local talent Zach Paxson is looking to bring his brand of country music to the Columbiana County Fair with a free concert on Aug. 1. A former instructor at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, Paxson has taken to the stage full time, performing in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Nashville, Tenn., among other locations. Music is in Paxson’s blood, his father, a bluegrass musician, has fronted the band Get Out and Push for years, taking the family to festivals all over the countryside. It was in the traditions of this musical style and those late night jam sessions that Paxson honed his songwriting skills and musical talents.
Eventually Paxson started his own band Futuregrass and began performing in front of large crowds. It was during these first concerts that Futuregrass learned what an audience wanted, which was to have fun, and they had no problem delivering high energy shows. After the band broke up, Paxson continued writing and performing solo shows, but music as a career was put on hold due to the fact that he had started quite a good size family and it was important to him to be around. But the burning desire and calling of music lead him to Nashville in 2011 where he recorded his first Reviews of the album have also filmed a music video for the CD, “Good Luck With That” at been positive as it continues to album’s title track “Good Luck climb the country charts. Savannah Jack returning to county fairground stage Returning to the Columbiana County Fair stage is Savannah Jack, who last opened for country singer Chuck Wicks. Savannah Jack formed in 2004 and performs over 120 shows a year, both on national and world tours. The band has honed its skills by playing Nashville honky-tonks and opening for such acts as John Fogerty, Vince Gill, and the legendary Kenny Rogers. The band, with its extraordinary three-part vocal harmonies, superior musicianship and fresh new sound, is poised to take country music by storm. Savannah Jack’s live show was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Concerts of 2010” in the Greater Pittsburgh area by Beaver County Times writer, Scott Tady. Other top 10 selectees included Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Lady GaGa. Exceptional songwriters as well as versatile musicians, band members infuse their individual style to collectively create Savannah Jack’s unique sound. Hailing from musical

families, band members have been singing and playing instruments from a young age. Their musical influences range from Ronnie Milsap, The Gatlin Brothers, Kenny
Rogers, The Beatles, Tom Petty and The Eagles. Members include Don Gatlin, lead vocals; Jay Darby, bass; Matt Thomas Schumacher, fiddle and
guitar; Matthew Crouse, drummer; and Jon Lewycky, lead guitar. Prior to joining Savannah Jack, Matt Schumacher toured with country star Phil Vassar for seven years
playing fiddle and adding vocal harmonies. A native of Avoca, Mich. and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Schumacher is an extremely talented and diverse musician. He is proficient on the violin/fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and trumpet. Born and raised in Florida, Darby started out playing the drums at age 10, while his brother played the guitar. He sold his drum set to buy his first guitar but continued playing percussion in the high-school band. Gatlin grew up in Beaver Falls, Pa., where he started singing for his neighbors for 25 cents or a piece of bubble gum. His mother was also a talented singer who had the opportunity to open for country music legends Kitty Wells and Wilma Lee Cooper. It is obvious that the band loves making music and is having a blast, whether members are performing in a small venue in Nashville or playing in front of thousands of people in sold out amphitheaters across the country.

First Bite Fishing Tank new to this year’s fair New to the 2012 Columbiana County Fair is First Bite Fishing Tanks, which offers free hands-on fishing for the entire family. Fishermen cast their lines in an 8-by-24-foot tank that holds 1,800 gallons of water and up to 300 different types of fish. Each fisherman will receive a rod fitted with a certain amount of line and no reel. The lack of a reel gets rid of the need for casting making the experience safe. Depending on the number of fishermen each turn last about 10 minutes. The First Bite Fishing Tank will be open in the afternoon through the evening next to the Arts and Crafts Building. Attempts are free and pictures can be taken for a nominal fee.

New barn gives exhibitors a cooler place to house rabbits and poultry By RENEE COLEMAN-EICHLER Staff Writer
LISBON — Rabbit, chicken and turkey exhibitors from 4-H past and present will notice a big change as they walk the Columbiana County Fair midway, the disappearance of the familiar Rabbit and Poultry Barn. Fair board members recently oversaw the removal of the tiny red barn, which was replaced with a 56-by-100-foot, 12-foot high steel building. “It’s bigger than what we had combined last year with the rabbits and poultry in the barn and turkeys in the tent,” said fair board member Tom Moore. Those who showed rabbits over the years or even those who took a casual stroll to view the various breeds of rabbits and chickens, will remember the cramped conditions and stifling heat that always seemed to be present. This new, handicapped accessible building alleviates those old problems by featuring open sides, removable cages, roll up curtains, six foot aisles, and ample ventilation. The curtains will be adjustable, allowing Rabbit Committee and

fair board members to adjust depending on the position of the sun. “It was way undersized,” said Moore. “There was no show room, they (exhibitors) were standing outside in the sun and the rain. Those poor animals really suffered. We put fans in there and nothing seemed to work.” The unfavorable conditions were a familiar summer experience for Moore as his four children were active rabbit exhibitors. He now gets to experience the new building as his grandchildren compete in the rabbit categories. In an attempt to open up more space, an

addition was tacked onto the original barn years ago, but the same problems remained. Seeing as the little red barn was not a historical building on the grounds, a demolition crew leveled it, but the addition was removed board by board and placed into storage. Plans are to eventually find a use and place for the structure. “When I was on there we actually raised the money for that addition by selling hundreds and hundreds of sausage sandwiches,” said Moore. Moore a 12-year member of the fair board spent 15 years on the Rabbit Committee. According to Tresa Hall, fair board secretary/treasurer, the Rabbit Committee began fundraising efforts to build a new barn years ago. “They have fundraisers all the time. They started help us build a new barn and reached $8,000 on their own,” said Moore. “That was great start for us when the fair
board stepped in because they were at a stall.” Once the project was selected by the fair board, 700 letters were mailed to past buyers and exhibitors. The response was good, with a few $1,000-plus donations. According to Moore most donations were small checks, but the money added up putting the $75,000 goal within reach. Donations are still being accepted by mailing checks to the Columbiana Agricultural Society, RTC Barn Fund c/o Columbiana County Fair, P.O. Box 356, Lisbon, Ohio 44432. A list of donors will be placed on the building’s inside wall next to a graph showing the amount of funds raised. tal-Rabbit Turkey Chicken Complex. “We wanted it (the sign) to be as big as the beef complex sign but we had to cut it down a bit. We just couldn’t fill it in,” said Moore. The 20-by-56-foot show arena will be dubbed the Nancy Simmons Memorial Show Arena, and a dedication is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. July 31 during turkey judging. Along with a new barn the area will
receive a face life with the Junior Fair board donating up to $1,000 for the construction of a well. The well, according to Moore, will not only serve as a way to dress up the area but will also serve a function by helping with the constant water problems. Fair board members plan to also use the barn for its winter storage program and the annual Pumpkin Festival.
