seats and booster seats were difficult to select and even more difficult to install correctly. Providing child safety seat inspections is a critical resource for parents and caregivers.”
To help, Mitsubishi funds a nonprofit called Kids Safety First that offers free child safety seat inspections at select Mitsubishi Motors’ dealerships and provides free educational materials.
Dorel Juvenile Group, the world’s largest car seat manufacturer, has joined the effort by donating over $55,000 in car seats over the past three years.
The organization gives families hands-on instruction from certified child passenger safety technicians on how to select, install and use child restraint systems. Certified technicians have been through extensive training with a national standardized course and have field experience.
For safety tips and a list of participating dealerships, visit www.kidssafetyfirst.org. For other safety advice, follow Jorgen Weterrings and Kids Safety First on Facebook.
It’s vital for parents to learn how to install and use child safety seats correctly. The all-volunteer grassroots organization also provides free automotive child safety materials to police, fire and rescue departments, hospitals, schools and prenatal centers. “Your children rely on you to help keep them safe,” explains Jorgen Weterrings of Kids Safety First. “We created the program because of our own experiences that child safety

Never ignore warning lights (NAPS)—Safety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a car’s dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention. Responding to your car’s warning lights can help to keep you on the road to safety and savings. While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored. That’s the word from the experts at AAA, who encourage motorists to read their owner’s manual and know what each of the warning lights in their vehicle means. To help, they offer the following tips: Oil Pressure Light The oil pressure light is usually an oilcan symbol or the word “OIL.” It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage.
If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Engine Temperature Light The engine temperature light is usually a thermometer symbol or the word “TEMP.” It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. Unless the engine temperature is quickly brought under control, major damage may occur.
If there are any signs of a cooling system leak, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

Charging System Light The charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word “ALT” or “GEN.” It comes on when the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied power by the alternator.
If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air-conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection. Check Engine Light The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicle’s exhaust emissions.
If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis.

Give your car a brake (NAPS)—If you’re like most motorists, you’re concerned about safety. In fact, research shows that vehicle safety is a top motivator for most motorists when it comes to vehicle maintenance and the brake system is at the top of the vehicle safety checklist. “Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of conditions. However, many motorists are unaware of the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair.”
What To Look For It’s important to be alert and recognize the warning signs of brake trouble. If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, you should inspect your brakes. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing. What To Do For routine maintenance, check your vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test-drive to detect other potential brake system problems. What Not To Do Several factors that affect brake wear include driving habits, operating condi-
tions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. “Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the ‘metal-to-metal’ point, which can be potentially dangerous and lead to a more costly repair bill,” White added. “If you haven’t checked your brakes in the past year, it’s a great time to ‘give your car a brake’ and make sure it’s in safe working condition.” The Car Care Council’s “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promotes the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Always check tire pressure (NAPS)—Your car’s tires are where safety and savings meet the road—literally. That’s why it’s important to make sure that your tires are properly inflated. Keeping your tires at their recommended pressure can provide better handling, longer tire life and gas savings of up to 12 cents per gallon, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. To get the most from your tires this summer, here are some tips from America’s largest tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire: • Get Pressure Right—Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound per square inch per month. The specific inflation pressure number can be found on the vehicle placard located on the driver’s side doorpost, glove box door, fuel door or in the owner’s manual. Custom tires and wheels may change standard air pressure requirements, so if you customize, have a pro check them out before you go. • Don’t Overload Vehicle—Overloading decreases fuel economy due to increased wind drag and cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted. • Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles have longer life and help to maximize your tire investment. • Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. • Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip the road. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, high or low spots or unusually smooth areas that can decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.
“Taking a Bite Out of High Priced Tires!” • Quality Used Tires • Mount & Balance • Tire Repair
When checking tire pressure, don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge. A tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat. A Five-Minute Fix Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check since a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat.
Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long trip. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure. Additionally, check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert Abe Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread. If you see his entire head, it’s time to replace the tire. Better safe than sorry (NAPS)—Sooner or later, all car batteries have to be replaced. The good news is that by taking a few simple maintenance steps, you can avoid the cost and hassle of getting stranded with a dead battery. Extreme Heat and Cold Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, thus damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, can allow too high of a charging rate, leading to slow death for a battery.
Colder temperatures can also be a problem, increasing the thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over and the battery work harder. This makes for harder starting. Battery Tips To help you get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following: • Have your battery tested—and replaced if necessary—in the fall and spring. This reduces the chance a dead battery will leave you stranded on the side of the road. • Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct

?
rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. • If your battery is the type that needs to be topped of f, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary. • Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified. • Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals, it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow. The Car Care Council is a national nonprofit organization providing information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign that promotes the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. For more information, visit www.carcare.org.becomes a conductor, which can drain battery power.

Choosing the right car seat (NAPS)—U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently announced the launch of a series of new public ser vice announcements (PSAs) released in partnership with the Ad Council that promote child car safety among parents of children ages newborn to 12. According to the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 12 years old. From 2006 to 2010, 4,028 children ages 12 and younger were killed in crashes and another estimated 660,000 children were injured in crashes involving a passenger vehicle. However, NHTSA reports that child restraints in the vehicle saved the lives of an estimated 9,611 children ages 4 and younger from 1975 to 2010. “While safety is our top priority for everyone on our roadways, we’re calling on parents to do everything they can to protect our most vulnerable passengers,” said Secretary LaHood. “These new public service announcements will encourage parents to choose the right seat for their children and properly secure them every time they get behind the wheel.” Working with the Ad Council as part of an ongoing campaign to ensure child car safety, NHTSA unveiled new PSAs that will air on television, radio, online and in outdoor advertising nationwide. “The Right Seat” effort aims to make sure all parents and caregivers are properly securing children ages 12 and under in the right car restraint (rear-facing, forward-facing, booster, seat belt) for their age and size. Targeting par-
ents and caregivers who think their children are already using the right car seats, the key message of the PSAs is “Parents who really know it all, know for sure their child is in the right car seat.” “The proper use of a child seat is the most effective way to keep a child safe in a moving vehicle,” said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. “Parents and caregivers should always use a child seat and, based on NHTSA’s updated guidelines, should keep their children in their current seats for as long as possible before moving them up to the next type of seat.” Coinciding with the release of the new PSAs, NHTSA also launched “Parents Central,” a new one-stop-shop website with tools and resources for keeping children safe in and around cars. For more than 25 years, the Ad Council and NHTSA have worked together on consumer safety PSA campaigns. Previous campaigns targeted individual stages of child passenger safety; i.e., the LATCH system, booster seats and seat belts. The English-language PSAs were created pro bono by advertising agency Gotham, Inc. “We are proud to partner with Secretary LaHood, Administrator Strickland and NHTSA to extend our more than 25-year partnership with NHTSA by releasing new PSAs that address the absolute importance of child car safety,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. The facts on synthetic oils (NAPS)—If you’re like most drivers, when it comes to vehicle maintenance, you use the motor oil the vehicle manufacturer recommends or rely on the service technician for its oil selection. Lately, more and more manufacturers and other car care experts are recommending synthetic motor oil for new and luxury models.
that cleans engine deposits. Older or higher-use engines sometimes have seals and gaskets that are not in good condition. If an older engine has degraded or damaged seals and gaskets, removal of engine deposits may expose existing leak paths. A quick rule of thumb is to inspect the engine, transmission and so on for leaks before a switch. Myth: I can’t justify paying for premium synthetic motor oil.
Facts And Myths To help you decide what’s best for your car, consider some common myths and facts:
Myth: Using synthetic oil will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Fact: The engine does not know what the oil is composed of and “cares” only that enough protection is provided. As long as the oil meets the API/ILSAC specs, and any applicable OEM oil specification, the oil will be warranty compliant. Myth: Once you start with a certain kind of oil you can’t switch between synthetic and nonsynthetic oil. Fact: High-quality, reputable synthetic engine oils do not adversely or permanently affect seals, gaskets or metal. Myth: Synthetic oils cause older vehicles to leak. Fact: Premium synthetic oils have a natural detergency
Fact: It may even help you save money. High-quality synthetic engine oil such as Royal Purple can go two to three times the typical oil change interval. The reduced oil changes will usually make up for the difference in purchase price by itself. (Fewer oil changes can also save you time, which can be priceless.) Perhaps the biggest benefit of using high-quality synthetic lubricants, however, is that the engine gets better protection. That means it will not only last longer but perform better over the extended life. According to a study by Kline & Co., synthetics accounted for about 22 percent of global car oil consumption. In Europe, synthetic motor oils account for most of the market, though the cost is dramatically higher than in the United States. You can find fur ther facts about synthetic oil at www.royalpurple.com.

Winter car tips
Perhaps the first frosts have already coated your windshield, forcing you to dig out the scraper. As you adjust to the coming chill, give a thought to your ride, and check out these nine tips that will keep your car rolling smoothly through winter’s challenges. We’re assuming you've covered the basics (such as the scraper!) and are up-to-date on your car’s regular scheduled service. Don't postpone that -- an annoyance in summer can be a hazard that strands you in the winter. Don't make compost in your car As you tackle fall's bounty on your lawn, leave some energy for removing the leaves that find their way into your vehicle.
Leaves, twigs and other organic matter can cause havoc with gutters on your house -- and the equivalent on your car. When debris builds up in areas of your car where water is supposed to flow out, you can get leaks or corrosion. The air plenum near the windshield is a classic spot where this can happen. If you have a sunroof, open it up and poke around in there, too. Sunroofs have drains that flow water that sneaks past the seals down to the ground. Leaf gunk in there can make for wet headliners or worse. Less common, but more problematic: Animals may make nests in the engine compartment or airbox. You may need a mechanic and an animal trapper to fully solve this problem. Consider winter tires So-called "all-season" tires have been on the market for decades. Coupled with front-wheel-drive and anti-skid systems, they have allowed many folks to avoid mounting a true snow tire for the winter months. But there are two trends in tires you should be aware of:
1) Styling priorities have led to manufacturers fitting wider,

low-profile tires on a variety of cars. Wide and low profile, on balance, makes a tire worse in the snow. Pressures to improve tire fuel economy have also worked against the snow utility of all-seasons. 2) Winter tires have improved their behavior from the era of knobby snow tires. New tread patterns and rubber compounds make them quieter on dry roads, yet even more effective on frozen stuff. Wipers for winter Fog, snow and rain will cut down your visibility in winter.
Check your wiper blades, which have a lifespan of about a year. If your car doesn’t have the newer "beam blade" style wipers, consider a pair, especially for the winter months. The beam style blades don't have an external spring to freeze up. When snow or other freezing precipitation threaten, pop your wipers up when you park so they're not touching the windshield. This little trick will make it easier to scrape your windshield and reduce the chance that you burn out the wiper motor by having them turn on while the blades are frozen in place.

Gas prices: get perspective
• Avoid quick star ts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city. • Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multipurpose trip. • Don’t haul unneeded items. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.
(NAPS)—While many motorists may panic when gas prices rise, a little planning, perspective and a few simple steps can go a long way to combat the price of fuel: • Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. • Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent. • Replace dirty or clogged air filters and improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon. • Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon. Driving behavior also impacts fuel efficiency. • Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph. • Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is sufficient.
“It’s easy to be alarmed by the cost of gas, but when motorists take a look at the big picture, they’ll see that much of the increased cost can be offset by adjusting driving habits and implementing a proactive vehicle preventative maintenance plan,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Fuel economy is related to vehicle maintenance. “A 20 cent increase in the price of a gallon of gas results in roughly $2 more per week the average commuter must spend,” continued White. “Simple, inexpensive maintenance and altering the way you drive goes a long way to offset soaring fuel prices, keeping more money in your wallet.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign, promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s “Car Care Guide,” which is now available electronically, or for more information, visit www.carcare.org. Mindful driving and maintaining your car can go a long way toward keeping travel expenses down, even when gas prices are up.
