Vietnam Wall Memorial arrives in Lisbon

convoy will travel past the library and village schools before turning onto state Route 14 in Washingtonville. Then it will travel along Route 14 into Salem. The convoy will turn onto the Route 45/62 bypass toward the state Route 45 intersection and will then travel south on Route 45 toward Lisbon. Along with the motorcycle escort, the Wall will weave its way through Lisbon, traveling down Beaver Street to Lincoln Way before turning onto Market Street toward the fairgrounds main entrance. Prior to the opening ceremonies on Friday, area students will visit The Wall and meet with Vietnam veterans. Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the colors presented by the Salem Amvets Honor Guard. Commissioner Tim Weigle will skydive into the fairgrounds at 6:45 p.m. Following Commissioner Weigle’s landing there will be a bagpiper and words from Commissioner Mike Halleck and State Rep. Nick Barborak, DLisbon. A rose laying ceremony is also planned during the opening ceremonies. During the ceremony names of all fallen soldiers from Columbiana and Mahoning counties will be read by Dr. Connie Robinson of Youngstown State University and Sharen Cope of the fair board. As the soldier’s name is read, family members or a member of the military will place a rose at the base of the panel where the soldier’s name is etched. Any family member or friend wishing to take part in the rose laying ceremony should contact Cope at 330-222-1914. A POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday with words from Tim Ginter. On Sunday, members of the Columbiana County Fair Board, Salem VFW and Salem Amvets will host a recognition ceremony for all county veterans beginning at 1 p.m. Although the ceremony will honor all county veterans, it will pay special attention to those who served during Vietnam.

LISBON — The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Wall Memorial that stands in Washington, D.C. will be on display at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday and will remain through 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15. In honor of this, the Columbiana County Commissioners have also proclaimed that weekend as Vietnam Veterans Weekend in Columbiana County. Once assembled, the Wall will be available for viewing 24 hours a day. Assembly will begin at 9:45 a.m. Thursday and tear down will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The Moving Wall has been on display across the country for nearly 30 years. The Wall's travel through the county will begin at 8:15 a.m. Thursday with a motorcycle escort from the Dutch Village Inn in Columbiana to state Route 344 into Leetonia. Once in Leetonia, the

Following remarks from U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta; state Sen. Joseph Schiavoni, D-Boardman; and Rep. Barborak, there will be a quilt presentation to area Vietnam veterans at 1:45 p.m. The quilts were created as part of the 2014 Columbiana County Fair’s “Vietnam Veterans: You Are Not Forgotten” special category. A pot luck dinner, by reservation only, will follow the presentation. Closing ceremonies by John Brown III, Amvets past national commander will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday. Throughout the weekend members of The Marlboro Volunteers will have a historical display of military vehicles as well as other military memorabilia. The Marlboro Volunteers Inc., is a charitable non-profit organization as well as a U.S. Military History and Educational Organization. Members bring to life soldiers from the French and Indian War to the present for those who stroll through their displays.

of fire into the charging ranks of the Viet Cong. Though repeatedly hit by small arms fire, he twice repelled enemy attempts to overrun his position. During the third attempt, a grenade explosion wounded him again and knocked him to the ground unconscious. The Viet Cong guerrillas, believing him dead, bypassed him and continued their assault on the main force.

Three highways in Columbiana County have been named for soldiers who were killed in action in Vietnam. On June 6, 2004, a 5.3-mile stretch of state Route 7 was named the Melvin E. Newlin Memorial Highway, in honor of

Wellsville native and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Melvin Newlin. Newlin’s Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously and presented to his family by President Richard M. Nixon.

County honors veterans along the highway Continued from page 13.

Meanwhile, Private Newlin regained consciousness, crawled back to his weapon, and brought it to bear on the rear of the enemy causing havoc and confusion among them. Spotting the enemy attempting to bring a captured 106 recoilless weapon to bear on other Marine positions, he shifted his fire, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy and preventing them from firing the captured weapon. He then shifted his fire back to the primary enemy force, causing the enemy to stop their assault on the Marine bunkers and to once again attack his machine gun position. Valiantly fighting off two more enemy assaults, he firmly held his ground until mortally wounded. Private Newlin had single-handedly broken up and disorganized the entire enemy assault force, causing them to lose momentum and delaying them long enough for his fellow Marines to organize a defense and beat off their secondary

attack. His indomitable courage, fortitude, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.” On May 23, 2007, a portion of state Route 344 near Leetonia was named the Pfc Ralph Dias Memorial Highway in honor of former Leetonia resident and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Ralph Dias. Dias, a native of Pennsylvania who had resided in Leetonia and is buried in Leetonia’s Oakdale Cemetery was awarded the medal posthumously by President Nixon. Dias’ medal citation reads: “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, while serving as a Rifleman with Company D, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam on November 12, 1969.

As a member of a reaction force which was pinned down by enemy fire while assisting a platoon in the same circumstance, Private First Class Dias, observing that both units were sustaining casualties, initiated an aggressive assault against an enemy machine gun bunker which was the principal source of hostile fire. Severely wounded by enemy snipers while charging across the open area, he pulled himself to the shelter of a nearby rock. Braving enemy fire for a second time, Private First Class Dias was again wounded. Unable to walk, he crawled fifteen meters to the protection of a rock located near his objective and, repeatedly exposing himself to intense hostile fire, unsuccessfully threw several hand grenades at the machine gun emplacement. Still determined to destroy the emplacement, Private First Class Dias again moved into the open and was wounded a third time by sniper fire. As he threw a last grenade which destroyed the enemy position, he was mor tally wounded by another enemy round. Private First Class Dias’

indomitable courage, dynamic initiative, and selfless devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in service to his country.” Then, in June 2014, a portion of state Route 45 between the Wellsville village limits and Yellow Creek Township was named the Corporal Ernest G. Madden Memorial Highway in honor of Wellsville native Ernest Madden. Madden was serving as a fire team leader with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, when his company was attacked while crossing a rice field inside enemy territory. With his group badly outnumbered and sustaining crippling casualties, Madden pressed on through 200 yards of heavy gunfire, mortar fire and grenade blasts to set up a firing position. Despite the sustained danger, he moved about the area, directing and encouraging his men, until he was fatally wounded. For his actions, Madden was posthumously awarded the Silver Star by President Lyndon Johnson.
