refresh your space Spring is all about airing out your space and spending more time outside, which calls for cleaning and perking up your routine. While a seasonal overhaul can sound daunting, here are four simple steps to help make spring preparations a breeze.
Clean Out the Fridge Before tackling messes around the house, start at the heart of the kitchen by cleaning out your refrigerator. Get rid of old leftovers, forgotten frozen meals and expired condiments. By removing perished contents from your fridge, you’ll get rid of lurking odors and have plenty of room for all the fresh produce that spring has to offer.
Soften and Eliminate Odors from Fabrics Throughout the cooler seasons, spring clothing that has been stored away can take on odors and become stiff after being folded for so long. Preparing your
wardrobe is an essential step to ease into the seasonal transition. Refresh summer clothes by tossing them into the dryer with a fabric softener sheet and a damp wash cloth. A few minutes in the dryer will make a big difference.
Declutter to De-stress While disinfecting and removing odors are the cornerstone of spring cleaning, it’s also important to re-evaluate items that were hoarded over the winter months. For example, revisit your spring wardrobe and pick at least three items to get rid of or donate to a clothing drive for every new item that you plan to bring in. Start by eliminating what doesn’t fit or what’s no longer needed. Cleaning out your wardrobe is an easy way to declutter your space.
Add a Pop of Color Say goodbye to winter grays and blues and invite color back into your home with
affordable and small swaps to celebrate the hues of the season. Replace white table napkins or plain placemats with patterned prints or shades of magenta, red and orange for a pop of color, or snip a few buds from the garden and place in different sized vases and jars to decorate the table spaces and windowsills around your home.

making a family move easier Whether or not to relocate can be a difficult decision. Sometimes such decisions are borne out of necessity when a parent is relocated by his or her company. Other times it is a personal reason to try out a new neighborhood or upgrade to a larger home. Date from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates a stable annual rate of moving hovering at around 12 percent of the population since 2008. Whatever reason is behind a move, it can take some time to adjust to both the idea of moving and the new living space — especially for children who may seem disconnected from the decision. The following tips can make the transition a little easier for families. Talk about it Do not blindside children with a move. Begin having conversations as a family as soon as the possibility of moving arises. Involve the children in some of the decisions. Ask about the features they want to see in their new home.
Explain that people, be it prospective buyers, real estate agents or movers, will be visiting your current home and that this may be a little disruptive. Talk about the reasons for the move, such as a new job or that the family has outgrown the space. Kids can process much more than many adults give them credit for.
6 | all about home/spring-summer 2017 page
Discuss any concerns Children may have concerns about the move that differ from adults’. Many of these may pertain to fears about making new friends or coursework at a new school. Let them voice their opinions. Removing some of the mysteries by visiting schools or local hangouts before the move is made can assuage some fears. Create some familiarity Set aside boxes or bins that will house kids’ toys or things that the family recognizes. These may include photographs, games, throw blankets, or the creature comforts of home. Make these the first items that are unpacked upon moving into the new house. Use the agent as a resource Many real estate agents live in the towns where they make their living. Find out if the agent can set up a meet-and-greet or if he or she knows of any clubs or leagues that suit your family’s interests.
Stay in touch Encourage children to stay in touch with their current friends. Video chat enables kids to see and speak with peers. When things settle after the move, arrange for a surprise play date where children can introduce their old friends to newer ones.
Stick to a routine One of the ways to breed familiarity is to stick to the same routine. If a big Sunday family dinner was the norm, continue the tradition in your new home. Wake in the morning and go to bed at the same time. According to Vanessa Lapointe, a registered psychologist in Surrey, British Columbia, structure and routine are key for children. Try to focus on one new thing at a time to minimize stress. Moving can be exciting and scary at the same time. Children may be anxious about the process, but families can work together to iron out the kinks and settle into their news homes successfully.
Making a few introductions ahead of time will give children and adults some familiar faces on their first days in their new home. Families shouldn’t shy away from making their own introductions as well. Knocking on a few neighbors’ doors and letting them know a new family is coming to the street can pave the way for familiarity and friendships.

6 ways to make more family time
Time is at a premium for today’s families. Many households are dual-income, and children may engage in one or more extracurricular activities after school. The challenge often lies in finding ways to spend quality time together as a family. Although that can sometimes feel impossible, with a little creativity and thoughtful planning, families can find time with one another.
1. Adjust wake-up time. Have the family get up with the earliest riser. Then everyone can enjoy breakfast together and touch base about their day to come.
Many activities that keep families busy occur after school, so this ensures at least one family meal together every day.
2. Take off for school holidays. Working parents can adust their schedules to include a few vacation days used on school holidays. This way everyone benefits from sleeping in and spending time together.
8 | all about home/spring-summer 2017 page
3. Schedule a family day off. Preplan for a weekday when the entire family stays home from work or school. Museums, indoor play areas, movie theaters, and other attractions are less busy during the week than during the weekend. This allows families to have more fun together.
4. Turn chores into family projects. Work around the house will get done much more quickly if everyone pitches in. Plus, this is a great opportunity to work together and learn new skills.
5. Host a family reunion. Extended families may only have the opportunity to see each other a few times a year. Annual family reunions help strengthen the bond adults and children have with their extended families and provide a fun reason to get together.
6. Schedule a weekly family night. Families can make sure that at least one night each week the schedule is free so that they can spend time together playing a game, watching a movie or doing another family-friendly activity.

The National Gardening Association states that 72 percent of American households do some work in their yards. However, a growing number of homeowners also hire others to make their lawns look pristine. Homeowners who want to leave lawncare to the professionals can consider the following factors as they search for a company that best suits their needs.
weeding through lawn care options Millions of acres across North America are devoted to lush, green lawns. According to Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, lawns take up 40.5 million acres and individuals spend $30 billion on average for lawn and garden upkeep in the United States alone. People certainly love their lawns and often wonder if those lawns are best left in the hands of professionals.

• Work with a licensed and insured company. Lawncare services that are licensed and insured provide more peace of mind to homeowners than the alternatives. Should an injury occur on your property while work is being done, an insured business will be able to take care of it and you won’t be liable. • Ask about membership in a professional or trade organization. Businesses that belong to an organization invest in continually learning about the evolution of lawncare. This increases the likelihood that member companies will be up-to-date regarding the latest, most environmentally friendly lawncare techniques. Participation in a trade organization also may indicate education in the landscaping field. • Research reviews before hiring. Although public reviews may not paint the entire picture and they often reflect only the very positive or very negative experiences previous customers have had with a given business, they can provide an idea of how a lawncare company interacts with its customers. Prospective customers who contact the Better Business Bureau may learn if there have been any glaring complaints against a particular contractor. • Find out which services are offered. Ask each business what services they provide. While nearly every lawncare contractor will mow the lawn and trim shrubs, many homeowners prefer companies that can adapt when the yard needs a change. This may include pest treatments, fertilization, aeration, and seasonal cleanups. • Look for a company that’s organized and connected. Customer service should be a factor when choosing a lawncare service. You want to be able to reach the company promptly. A company that responds quickly is ideal, especially if you need to change a service or need to inquire about additional or emergency work.

lawn care problems
A beautiful lawn is a goal for many homeowners. Some homeowners may find that lovely lawns may last momentarily, only to disappear when damage — be it pest-, weather- or child-related — sets in.
• Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees. • Chemical spills: Gasoline and fertilizer spills and pesticide applications in high concentrations can cause the lawn to yellow or brown in spots. Carefully refill lawn gas tanks and fertilizer spreaders on the sidewalk or drive-
way to avoid overflow onto the lawn. If spills occur, flood the area promptly with water to dilute.
• Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot. • Debris: Leaving a tool, kids’ toys, piece of wood, or any debris on the lawn can quickly suffocate the grass beneath and cause the lawn to die quickly. Make sure that no items are left on the lawn for an extended period of time. • Mowing patterns: Running the mower in the same pattern over and over can cause ruts in the grass that lead to damage, so avoid mowing in the same direction on consecutive cuts. Avoid mowing on very hot days or when the
lawn is soggy. Both can cause tracks to form in the lawn. • Mowers: Dull lawn mower blades can damage lawns, as can mowing too fast. Grass blades can be torn, snapped and more, resulting in brown spots. • Wildlife: Animals and insects can destroy turf roots. Animals or insects may feed on the grass from underneath its surface, compromising the lawn’s ability to procure nutrients and water. Animals like moles or raccoons may feed on grubs in the lawn, and treating for grubs can alleviate torn-up turf.

preserve family memories for years Families enjoy many moments together throughout the years. However, in today’s digital world, quite often those experiences fail to see the light of day past an initial tweet or Instagram post. Too often file upon file remains in a digital graveyard on a mobile phone or external hard drive.
Instead of letting photos, videos, drawings, and memorabilia from vacations and other family experiences linger unappreciated, families can preserve these memories. Explore the various ways to share occasions with others. Photo books Don’t procrastinate and let photo files pile up. Promptly upload them to your favorite photo printing site or bring them to a retailer that has photo machines, such as a nearby pharmacy. Such businesses routinely offer coupons and steep discounts on photo books.
The software is user-friendly, and, in a week or two, you can have a photo book ready to go. This is less time-consuming than making photo albums, printing photos and then placing them behind plastic-lined pages. The photo book software also may include background designs and funny captions to help customize pages even further. Photo collage If you are a purist and like to have photo prints in hand, then have several of a particular occasion made and then attach them to a decorative piece of wood. Using a decoupage product or a shellac, coat the collage so that it can be preserved. Hang your collage as a piece of handmade artwork on display.
Artwork gallery Children routinely bring home artwork they made in school, daycare and other organized classes. Sometimes these items get stashed in plastic containers that are ultimately stored in attics or basements, only to be “discovered” years later.
Rather than relegating them to storage, invest in frames of various sizes and hang the pictures as if they were in an art gallery. Make sure the frames are easy to access so that the artwork can be swapped out periodically. Kids will take pride in sharing their creations with family and visitors.
Keep a journal Another way to preserve memories is to write down experiences. Each member of the family can fill out a page with a special recollection of a trip or another momentous day. Keep the journal on a coffee table so it can be reviewed every so often. Save it and gift it to future generations. Family memories are worth keeping and sharing. There are many ways to display photos, thoughts and other sentiments from special events.

create a safe backyard play area Homeowners often aspire to have attractive backyards that look like they belong in a magazine. While these can be picturesque and functional for adults, they may not be entirely practical for homeowners who have young children, especially when the majority of the yard is covered with paving stones or concrete. When young children are part of a household, homeowners may benefit by designing yards that are both functional and fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is one way to unlock the potential of both big and small backyards. As children run off to enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing on their minds. Kids are most interested in scaling ladders to treehouses or coasting down slides. That’s why adults must take it upon themselves to keep injury prevention in mind. SafestPlayground.com indicates that playground-related injuries routinely result in severe fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. In the majority of playground injuries to children younger than age 5, the head and face are affected. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 experience more leg and arm injuries than younger kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states 70 percent of children’s injuries occur on home playgrounds. More than 28,000 children are injured each year on playgrounds across Canada, according to Parachute, a national injury prevention organization.
• Surface: Parents should assume that children will fall. To lessen the blow of falls, choose playground equipment with a perimeter of six feet of a softer surface, such as sand, pea gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips. This material should be between six and 12 inches deep. • Structure: The structure of the play equipment should be built from sturdy materials. Pressure-treated lumber was once the standard, but it’s not adviseable for kids’ playgrounds, as the chemicals used in the lumber can leach and young children may actually bite or pick at the wood. Use cedar or another wood that resists decay. Once the structure is built, inspect it frequently for damage.
• Site: Look around the landscape for an ideal place to locate the playset. There should be no obstacles that children can hit while sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging branches and do not place equipment too close to trees or fencing. Try to keep the set out of direct sunlight, which can make components heat up and scald young bodies. • Supervision: Do not leave children alone while they are playing. Prevent children from using the playset in an incorrect manner.
When considering playground equipment for the yard, parents need to make safety a priority.
• Safety: Follow the directions for installation. Make sure all posts are anchored into the ground securely. Railings should be spaced so that children cannot get stuck between them.
The Canada Safety Society advises parents to follow the “5 S’s of Playground Safety”: Surface, structures, site, supervision, and safety.
Check that metal components have not rusted and that there is no additional excessive wear. Be sure that no tools or other dangerous items are left around the yard.

shade-tolerant plants complete landscapes Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. • Heavy shade: Heavy shade is when no direct sunlight reaches a plant. This occurs at the base of northern-facing walls or beneath thick tree canopies.

• Full sun: Areas that receive full sun enjoy direct sunlight between six and eight hours per day.
• Moderate shade: These sites have reflected sunlight that may come off of water features.
• Light shade: Plants in these areas will get partially filtered or dappled sunlight. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants.
• Bayberry: Myrica pensylvanica can grow in partial shade as a hedge or natural property divider. The leaves of this shrub are aromatic when crushed. The shrub will produce tiny, gray/white fruits in late summer.
• English Ivy: Also known as Hedera helix, this trailing plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It will spread easily and can become invasive. Those searching for shade-tolerant trees can choose among Sugar maple, Black alder, Flowering dogwood, and White spruce, among others.
Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Those who are looking for some preliminary guidance when it comes to selecting shade-tolerant shrubs, plants or trees can consult the following list.
• Bleeding heart: Bleeding heart, or Dicentra spectabilis, is typically found in woodlands. It’s a perennial in the poppy family that produces mounded foliage and arching vine-like stems of heart-shaped flowers in the spring. • Amethyst flower: Browallia hybrids offer star-shaped blooms of blue and violet. These plants will billow out of hanging baskets or containers, and they prefer warm shade or filtered sunlight.
• Coleus: The coleus, Solenostemon scutellarioides, is another perennial that can have a variety of different leaf colors and striations. • Witch hazels: These are a genus in the family Hamamelidacea, which has four different species in North America. This shrub or small tree features arching branches with dense, multi-stemmed clumps. Witch hazel produces flowers in the late autumn when most other plants are sparse.

Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens. Understand the equipment Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it. Wear appropriate protective gear Failure to wear protective gear can lead to injury. Personal protective equipment includes gloves, eye protection, ear protection, boots, and a hard hat if necessary. When working during visibility conditions or at night, wear a reflective vest.
Other protective items include a hat to shade your eyes from the sun’s rays. Sunscreen will protect the skin from UVA and UVB radiation. Long pants and sleeves can guard against flying debris. Watch your surroundings Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers. Get approval before digging It’s difficult to know what is beneath the ground without having a property surveyed and marked. Digging without approval can result in damage to gas lines or water/sewer pipes. Always check with the utility company before digging trenches or holes. Unplug or turn off all equipment When not in use, keep lawn equipment off. Do not try to repair or fix a snag or obstruction in equipment while it is on. Don’t modify the equipment in any way, such as removing protective guards.
Exercise caution with chemicals Follow manufacturers’ safety instructions when using pesticides or fertilizers. Avoid application on windy days or right before a rainstorm, as this can spread the product and damage the ecosystem. Keep people and pets away from treated areas.

Lower Calorie Buffalo Chicken Dip by Charlotte Wengler-Tibbetts
• 1 chicken breast cooked and shredded • 1 8 oz. What is Maggi? Maggi is a familiar sight in kitchens all around the world, though its origins lie in Switzerland in the late 19th century. Made in Germany, Maggi Liquid Seasoning is an aromatic liquid flavoring that can be used as an ingredient to bring out the flavors of any dish. Simply add a couple drops of the liquid to your stir-fries, casseroles, soups and sauces.
In the same pan leave the bacon grease, add mustard, water, vinegar, and sugar. Add a little Maggi or a half beef bouillon. Heat the pan and bring to a boil. Turn off and pour liquid mixture over the potatoes; mix well. Add the hard boiled eggs. Add salt and pepper to taste. If the dressing is too dry, add a little more water and vinegar. Serve at room temperature. Guten Apetite! all about home/spring-summer 2017 21 page

dream closets can save time
Assess your needs. Ask questions like: Do you have a walkin closet or a reach-in? Need to create one within a room? Do you prefer more shelves over hanging space? Is shoe storage important? Do you prefer a flexible system, like wire, that can adapt to your changing needs or do you prefer something with a designer look? Are you a DIYer or do you require professional assistance? Define your taste and style. Do you prefer modern or traditional? Or are you more eclectic? Identify the product that works best for your needs and your budget. One option to consider is ClosetMaid SpaceCreations, a designer-inspired, DIY-acquired option that provides customizable storage inside and outside of closets.
(Family Features) If you’re one of the 57 percent of women who believes having an organized closet would make finding what you want easier and faster, there’s no time like the present to stop dreaming about having a beautiful and organized closet. Take charge and start the project now. Having a disorganized closet is a problem for at least one in four women, according a recent ClosetMaid survey. Some women (1 in 10) are even depressed when they open their closet doors. What’s more, some research suggests the average American wastes as much as 55 minutes a day (roughly 12 days a year) searching for things they can’t find. Introducing some organization is a simple way to alleviate these worries. Whether you reside in an apartment in the city or a home in the suburbs, your best starting point is to create a plan of attack. Professional organizer Barbara Reich of Resourceful Consultants offers these tips for getting started:
Available in Classic White or Premier Dark Java, it’s easy to install and is extremely versatile with different accessories and options like shoe shelves, drawers and acrylic dividers to provide a completely personalized look. As an added bonus, this storage option can be adapted for a nursery, mudroom or pantry. A handy online design tool or a complimentary professional designer can assist you with the layout and design. Let the organizing fun begin. Before you restock your new closet, scrutinize your wardrobe and accessories, and get rid of items you won’t ever wear or use again. Once you’ve got everything neatly in place, enjoy your newfound organization, but be vigilant about keeping your closet in order. Dedicate 15 minutes each week to keep it looking as good as new. 7 Ways to Add Functional Style to Your Closet
Shine the light. A trendy light fixture can add fun and bling while providing adequate lighting to illuminate all the treasures your closet has to offer. Diffused lighting is a good way to chase away shadows and ensure none of your favorite garments and accessories get left in the dark.
top shape by preventing stretching. Slim velvet hangers are optimal for saving space, but if you have the room, a heavier wooden version is even better. Add some special flair. It’s not just the structure that affects the overall mood of your closet. One easy way to add some personal charm is with colorful and patterned fabric drawers. They provide a home to hide and consolidate more personal belongings and add pops of color and style to your shelves.
Make creative use of wall space. If you have some unused wall space, this is the perfect place for a dream board. A simple cork surface is all you need. Add pictures of your favorite outfits so you can remember pairings that made you feel great. You can also use the space for inspiration and add wish list items from magazines or photos.
Organize by color. When you’re ready to hang clothes in your newly designed space, sort garments by style; group dressy tops, casual pants and so on. Then take your organization another step further by hanging like colors together. The streamlined color palette is pleasing to the eye, but it also makes it easier to select the right combinations and avoid overlooking any options. Hang clothes with care. Give your clothes some TLC and make the switch to highquality hangers. Not only do uniform hangers make your closet appear more organized, they help keep your wardrobe in tip-
Dedicate a container for capturing rejects. Avoid hanging on to unwanted items by designating a container to capture clothing destined for donation. When the bin is full, transfer to a cardboard box and drop off at a local charitable organization. A similar approach can be used for items that need repair; when a few items have accumulated, either haul out the sewing machine or head to the nearest seamstress for professional assistance. Don’t forget the floor. While much is made about the wall space, the floor is an important element of your closet, too. For carpeted rooms a rug may be more ornamental, but if you have hardwood floors, an area rug can be a safety feature that keeps you from slipping in your hurry to get dressed and out the door.

tips from the pros By KATIE WHITE Staff Writer
COLUMBIANA — If you want a hummingbird or butterfly in your yard there are certain plants you can buy for that. If you want deer to stay away, just tie a dryer sheet to your plants. Scott Linhart, who owns Town ‘N Country Gardens in Columbiana, said a simple Bounce dryer sheet keeps deer away because they don’t like the smell. He learned the simple trick from a friend at Robinson’s Tree Farm in Lisbon, he said. The friend was having trouble with deer eating his maple trees – losing four or five trees a night to the animals’ feasting. “Just tie them to the branch (of the plant),” Linhart said of the sheets. The sheets should be replaced about every month, and are much cheaper than other deer repellents, although those are available. The business also sells a pruning sealer that runs about $10 per can to repair plants or trees that have already been victim to deer munching. Linhart said the sealer is similar to a spray tar. The spray seals the “wound,” keeping bugs and moisture out. “If a deer has already beat up a tree, as long as it doesn’t go all the way around the trunk, usually the tree would still live,” he added. With deer and other wildlife steering clear of the plants in your yard, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds is as simple as purchasing the proper plants, like Clethra, Crocosmia, old fashioned milkweed, bee balm or butterfly bushes. Clethra, Crocosmia and the butterfly bushes seem to be the most popular for customers at the Columbiana store, Linhart said.
Customers were especially interested in these types of plants the business had on display during the Firestone Festival about two years ago. The plants vary in price, but can run around $35 a piece. Linhart said anyone interested in planting things that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds should find a location where the plants will get at least a half a day of sunlight. “Most of the flowering stuff will not do well in the shade. For the most part, flowering shrubs, flowering perennials, a big chunk of them need sunlight. They will still bloom, but they won’t bloom nearly as nice, or they will lose their color just being in the shade,” he said. He added that hummingbirds are particularly drawn the the Crocosmia, which is red. People buying these types of plants should be aware that Clethra will grow as tall as 5 feet. Butterfly bushes can get as tall as 6 feet, but there are some that will only grow to 2 or 3 feet. “The fragrance is wonderful on them,” he said of the bushes. kwhite@mojonews.com

pests be gone
Fire Ants • Take away attractive food and water sources. Clean up outdoor spills, open food containers, and pet food and water bowls. • Make fire ants uncomfortable because they seldom return to the same spot - mowing over a colony can help.
Flies • Regularly wiping countertops and cleaning food and drink spills. • Emptying trash cans frequently. • Installing screens on doors and windows. • Turning on fans. Mosquitoes • Remove standing water from gutters, buckets and other areas where mosquitoes can breed. • Change water in bird baths, fountains and potted plants frequently. • Thin out vegetation where adult mosquitoes may live and feed.
Wasps • Keep your yard clean of ripe or rotting fruit. • Clean up after barbecues to remove leftover meat. • Dispose of sugary drinks before they can attract wasps. • Install a misting system.
Roaches • Keeping your home clean and free of moisture and food spills. • Sealing all cracks and crevices inside the home, as adult cockroaches can squeeze through a space as thin as a dime. • Lowering the thermostat to discourage German cockroaches, which like hot and humid conditions. gray is trending By KEVIN HOWELL Staff Writer
Gray seems to be trending for home interiors this year. What colors can be used with it? Is it good for painting walls, or should it just be used for trim? How is the color best used and with which other colors? According to Bill Allison, owner of Superior Paint and Wallpaper in Salem, usually house paint colors follow behind the auto and fashion industries. As those industries gradually change, house paints follow behind. “That’s what we’re seeing now,” Allison said. Grays have been growing in popularity the past few years. As stated in a Washington Post article written by Katherine Salant in February of 2016, “not only have homeowners embraced gray for things that are easy to change — such as wall colors or throw pillows — they also have embraced gray for things they expect to be using 10, 20 and even 30 years from now, including kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures.” Allison noted paler shades of gray, off whites, seem to be most popular right now, replacing the darker shades of gray. But mostly the grays picked are those that match the other colors in the house, he said. “They can be used for walls and trim, and are also popular

for exteriors,” he explained. “But whatever shade homeowners choose, it has to match what is already there and what else will be incorporated.” Referring back to Salant’s article, the color gray encompasses everything from a “soft silver to a stark, dark charcoal. It’s the perfect neutral because it’s compatible with almost every other color, and it folds easily into every style of decor.” Basically grays incorporate other colors, making it easy to match. Allison said he is seeing customers who are remodeling their kitchens, focusing on the cabinets as well as the trim and woodwork. “They’re moving away from the natural colors,” he said. “They’re doing what they see on television.” With the growing popularity of remodeling shows on such networks as HGTV, homeowners are eyeing similar styles for their own homes, Allison noted. “What they see on television, that’s what they are doing in their own homes,” he said. But homeowners still need local stores to get the exact color they want. “They are looking for the color online, but it’s still imperative to verify it in stores,” he explained. Allison ventured a guess that since there are more remodels right now instead of new builds, the color gray helps everything come out uniform. Of course, not everything in the home can be gray. Allison noted Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is “shadow,” a deep, “grapey” purple that contrasts well with grays. It is a color that is good for interiors, he said. Other colors that are popular include deep blue/greens and purples, Allison said, which work well with the newly popular color spectrum. Similar to gray, customers are also interested in “Revere pewter,” a color similar to a soft gray tone, he said. khowell@salemnews.net

cool pool advice By LARRY SHIELDS Staff Writer
AUSTINTOWN — Since 2001 the family-owned and operated Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs hasn’t followed the trends of other swimming pool and hot tub/spa companies. Steve Bayer, a Boardman High School graduate, is the owner is of Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs and is about as tenured in the business as they come with 17 years at Caribbean, 12 years with Lighthouse Pools and 10 years at Burnett Pools.
In-ground pools are manufactured by Pools by Cardinal, a Pennsylvania company. Hot tubs are made by Marquis in Oregon and by Nordic Hot Tubs in Grand Rapid, Mich. “We have a pretty good mix of in ground, above ground pools and hot tubs,” Bayer said, noting that about 25 percent of sales are in ground pools, 35 percent are above ground and hot tubs comprise about 40 to 45 percent of the business. It also carries accessories, parts and an array of chemicals to keep pools clean and pristine. “Swimming pools and hot tubs are an emotional buy, said Bayer. “We create a lot of memories and emotions can get cumbersome. We want to put in as many pools as possible but we want to put in the best product. We don’t get many call backs and that keeps the price down.” Bayer said people usually know the distinction when it comes to pools and hot tubs, but the decision between above ground and in ground is usually financial. He said above ground pools are also known as “non-diving pools.”
Steve Bayer is the owner of Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs
Located at 4728 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs differentiates itself by doing it right, including the seasonal opening of pools. His motto is simply, “We do it right!” — not “We do it all.” The business provides a wide range of services for pools and can repair most brands of spas. Bayer said above ground pools include the Canadian brand Cornelius pools, Wilbur Pools and Swim and Play Pools, both New Jersey companies.

“In ground is permanent,” he said. “But above ground pools are a lot different than 30 years ago. They last longer and are easier to maintain.” Another big thing is the technology behind the above ground pools and the fact that they don’t look like “tin cans anymore,” he said. Manufacturers have changed the look quite a bit by using two-tone colors and designed uprights that do away with the “unfinished” look. There are also very appealing deck treatments that can be built, he said, adding that some people don’t want a permanent pool. “So the basic above ground pool people are more aware of the maintenance and chemical cost,” he explained.

“We tell people if you can spend one hour a week on your pool, you’ll have a crystal clear pool.” The above ground pools have evolved, Bayer said, and there are eight different liners to add to the ambiance. Years ago, he said, the liner choice was, “blue, blue and blue.” That’s changed. Above ground pools can be installed in six hours while in ground pools can take a week to 10 days.

Along with free water sticks or pucks. testing, service for pools and spas, Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs will open and close swimming pools seasonally.
“We take the measurements,” Bayer said, explaining there is about a two to three month lead time from purchase to installation.
During its first two years in business, Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs received the national Aqua100 award for “Excellence in Building, Retail and Service.”
“You have to be realistic as far as time lines,” he said. “You can’t call in April and want it in June. Our goal is not to trash the yard. You do need to get down range on the timeline. The people getting pools installed in April and May were here in January and February.”
In 2003, it received the Rising Star Award and in 2006 Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs earned the Marquis Corporations’ Five-Year Service Award.
Bayer said that historically Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs builds pools in October and November.
On the Caribbean Pools and Hot Tubs website, Bayer noted that, “With help from Marquis Spas and the Make-A-Wish foundation we’ve been able to provide 11 hot tubs to terminally ill children in our area. We look forward for that number to increase in the future.”

When you renovate an older home, the goal is not always to replace old with new. In fact, some renovations are all about preserving the past with a design that reflects and pays respect to the yesteryear features that make your home unique. Whether you’re planning a renovation for a 60-year-old home, or working to infuse some retro charm into a newer place, the ultimate goal is capturing the nostalgic feel of older homes: the classic lines, hardwood, moldings and woodwork, and features like fireplaces or stonework, bannisters or windows and doors. The kitchen can be a particularly challenging room to renovate because the blend of old charm with modern convenience and functionality can seem at complete odds. These ideas from the design experts at Elmira Stove Works can help you combine practical function with timeless features for a room filled with character and purpose.
Keep cabinet facades true to the era. Updating the cabinets is practically a necessity for any vintage kitchen remodel. Although many older kitchens lacked the cabinet space modern homeowners desire, you can still achieve a retro look with ample storage by focusing more on the shape and style than on the quantity. With this approach, you can add as much storage and as many functional amenities as your space allows while still capturing the right look for the era. Opt for sleek and understated styles, or for some extra flair incorporate exaggerated angles and curves common to mid-century design. Material and color options abound, so you’re free to go bold and glossy or more subdued. Design with a focal point in mind. In a retro kitchen, standout elements such as colorful appliances can enhance the space and act as a focal point in the room. Stainless steel has become almost “default” in kitchens from coast to coast.

Yes, steel is sturdy … steel is modern … and in post-World-War II America, steel was arguably the hottest choice for materials for the home. During the war, America had ramped up tremendous capacity in steel production so that we could produce weaponry. Afterward, all the production had to find a new outlet. Where did it go? To big ‘ole American cars, but also into the American home — for appliances, home construction, and, yes, kitchen cabinets. The Big Three: During the glory years, there was a “Big Three of metal kitchen cabinets”: 1. Youngstown (shown here) 2. Geneva 3. St. Charles
Whether your home is on the beach, in the mountains or in a suburban neighborhood, for those who find beauty in the past, choosing a retro refrigerator or a vintage stove might be a better choice. These appliances act as a major design element in the space, and fortunately there are plenty of options when it comes to retro appliances with exciting pops of color. One example is the Northstar line offered by Elmira Stove Works, which offers the ideal blend of form plus function: soft lines, rounded corners and refreshing colors - including a dazzling Robin’s Egg Blue - along with the premium performance you’d expect from the most modern appliances.
Visit elmirastoveworks.com to explore a product catalog and find more design inspiration. Let the details bring it all together. Vibrant color is the signature of any retro kitchen, so don’t forget to carry that design element through the space with accessories like dishes, cookbooks and vintage relics that celebrate bygone days. swimmng pool basics By LARRY SHIELDS Staff Writer
SALEM — Since 1975 Homestead Pools has stood at the Depot Road and state Route 45 bypass intersection where the family-operated business has sold and installed swimming pools. The address is 180 E. Pidgeon Road, but it is better known for being on the Depot Road intersection. Sally Rice owns the business that is managed by her son, Gary Rice. There are a total of five full and part-time employees. The showcase room walls are lined with photos of in-ground and on-ground pools so customers can get a clear idea of what the differences are and how they look.
Homestead Pools owner Sally Rice and business manager Gary Rice
There is also a pool in the showroom that amplifies the feeling of what the pools look like and how they are made. But the display model is just 10 feet across and really quite small, Sally Rice said. But it conveys the idea.
ground, or totally in the ground. The walls are made of more durable materials for kicking off the sides. On some, the ends can be made deeper, but these are still non-diving pools. The pools can be crafted and tied in to fit an existing deck.
Homestead Pools can also install any one of a number of PDC Spas.
“This is a fairly new concept,” Sally said. “That saves money and building time, yet still enhances your yard and gives you all the advantages of an in-ground pool, except diving from a diving board.”
“On ground pools are more popular. The idea is you don’t have to have it all the way into the ground. You can get inground options for it,” said Gary, a 1988 Salem High School graduate.
In-ground pools are the top of the line — the best looking and longest lasting and the only choice if a diving board is desired.
“It’s not a diving pool. You need more room for that, but it functions like an in-ground pool except for the diving,” Sally added. “It’s built like an in-ground pool. In grounds can be shallow (if the customer wants that). You can still get an inground pool but not a diving pool.”
“They come in an infinite number of sizes, shapes and styles,” she said. They generally have a concrete deck, but they can be finished with brick, flagstone, wood or stamped concrete.
There are a number of reasons to invest in a home pool — health benefits, family time, fun and entertainment can all factor in.
“Landscaping plays an important role in the final look of your pool,” Sally said. In any case you will need a fence either around the pool or the yard.”
“It’s a great way to have quality family time together with your kids,” she said. “What better way to cool off on a hot summer day than swimming in your very own pool?”
Homestead Pools offers a no obligation backyard survey for free. She explained other aspects of installing a swimming pool like chemical treatment, filtration and heating come into consideration.
As an investment, swimming pools are an alternative to an expensive vacation that can mean years of family enjoyment “in your own backyard,” she said. “You are not just investing in your property, but in entertainment for the whole family,” Sally said. Homestead Polls will help customers with the three pool choices that include above ground, on ground and in ground. Above ground are generally oval shaped or round and are “strictly” on top of the ground and are not designed for back fill dirt against them. As the least expensive option, they are usually 52 to 54 inches deep and there is no diving.
For example there are several ways to heat a pool, gas, natural gas, propane, heat pump or solar heat. Sally said that choosing the right pool company is probably the most important factor. She pointed out that Homestead Pools has been in business for over 54 years, “servicing literally thousands of customers who are happily swimming in their pools.” “We can serve your needs whether it’s a $2 part or a $40,000 in-ground pool with all the bells and whistles. During the season, we are open seven days a week,” she said. The season begins the second Monday in May.
On-ground pools can be built partially in and on top of the 38 | all about home/spring-summer 2017 page
