Baker Farm-Baker’s Golden Dairy NEW WATERFORD — In 1884 William C. Baker constructed the barn using timber he logged from the farm. Sadly, an accident occured as the barn was nearing completion causing Baker to succumb to his injuries a year later. Fast forward to 2016 where Kevin and Debra Baker now run the farm, Baker’s Golden Dairy. Married in 1981 and four children later, Kevin and Debra decided to expand the farm. Kevin’s dream had always been to bottle and sell his own milk, the way it used to be, so in 2010 the planning began. With four generations of Bakers working on the 500 acre plus farm, bottling finally began in 2011 after many trial runs and state inspections. This made Baker’s Golden Dairy the very first on-farm bottling plant in Columbiana County. The family milks about 100 cows which produce between 600-700 gallons of milk a day. The milk is pasteurized and nonhomogenized with no hormones added to milk production and absolutely no anitbiotics are used. In addition, they are farming more than 500 acres.

Bates Farm LISBON — Larry Bates understands how farming has changed over the years. “The technology change has improved productivity and quality of planting,” he said. He and his wife Nanette farm roughly 60 acres of crops just outside of Lisbon. About 15 years ago they were approached by a company wishing to construct a cell tower on the property, which is something long ago farms didn’t have the luxury of doing. The tower remains on the property and provides an additional portion of income for the family, which farms the property in addition to working full-time jobs. The Bates purchased the farm from Larry’s grandfather Clifford Shaw, and his wife Alma, 38 years ago. Clifford Shaw was inducted in the county’s Agriculture Hall of Fame during the Columbiana County Fair. Things are going well on the Bates farm, but the couple continues to hope for more rain.

Crib barns are usually built of unchinked logs and may or may not have a hay loft. There is only two of these barns around; one in Pennsylvania and the Montan Farm barn. The logs go all the way down to the foundation. Hay was put into the cribs to cure while the animals were around the cribs to eat.

Lippincott Farm

Neil Lippincott said that while some days on the farm may have been “exhausting,” he has never worked. “It all came easy,” he said of the farming work, which he loves. Meanwhile, his wife has spent hours of her time researching the family’s farm history, and in addition to the original Madison deed she found inside the home, she has found other documents showing where her husband’s ancestors have come from ä countries like Holland, and Germany. The research gets difficult because women’s last names change over time through marriage, she explained. A family reunion held on the property in 1887 was featured in a local newspaper, a clipping of which helped Mrs. Lippincott along the way. The Lippincotts hope the farming tradition will continue in the family. LISBON - In 1815, President James Madison signed a deed that would later become the Lippincott family farm in Minerva. Neil and Carol Lippincott said it was 25 years after the deed was signed that the former government property became the family farm. Mrs. Lippincott is still trying to research the history between the time the deed was signed and when the farm officially began, to see if the farm’s history actually spans 200 years. The farm was recognized as an Ohio Sesquicentennial Farm during the opening ceremonies for this year’s county fair. The designation is an Ohio Department of Agriculture honor that recognizes farms that have been passed down from generation to generation, for at least 100 years. A sesquicentennial farm is one that has a family history of at least 150 years.

20

Mr. Lippincott has tended the 371-acre farm alongside his son Richard and grandson Ryan Lippincott. A great-grandson, Brentley Neil Lippincott is being raised to take on the task as well. In addition to their own property, the family farms another more than 300 acres of property. It began as a dairy farm, but the Lippincotts now raise crops of corn, beans and rye.

FoxAyre Farm

The farm was then transferred to their son C. Richard Fox who began his law practice in 1955 in Columbiana and had served two years during the Korean conflict as a Special Investigative Agent in the Counter-Intelligence Corp. of the U.S. Army. Fox started leasing a portion of the farm’s tilled acres for planting in the early 1990s. Dairy cattle were sold and beef cattle were purchased. Following his death in 2011, Fox willed the farm to his neices and nephew, Marsha, William, Leann and Sandra, who formed FoxAyre Farm LLC. Today the partners Marsha and Leann Fox, Sandra Fox Clark, and William’s heirs, Amy Fox Last, Carrie Fox and Sarah Fox Fojut contine the family’s farming tradition on the 396- acre farm that extends from Ohio into Pennsylvania, supports corn and soybean crops, pasture and woodland. The family has also refurbished and maintained the historic home, barn and outbuildings.

EAST PALESTINE — Charles Long Sr., along with his wife, Catherine Firestone, and their family moved from Maryland. In 1801, he paid $2 an acre for land in Unity Township. The orginial deed was signed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The family raised sheep and grew wheat, oats, barley, corn, clover and rye. The farm then transferred to Charles Long Jr., then to his niece, Lucinda and her husband William Wallace, who was ranked among the

leading pioneer business men of Columbiana County. For several years the Wallace family continued ownership through several generations until Edith Wallace Fox acquired the land in 1938. Edith and her husband, Harold, were full-time dairy farmers, delivering milk for up to 200 customers for 40 years. Deliveries stopped in 1980 causing the farm’s milk production to be sold to a co-op.

Wild Duck Hollow Farm Farm Facts Owner: Mike and Sue Little Nat and Damion Wallace Established: 1907 Location: East Rochester Acres: 225 Staple: Dairy and poultry

EAST ROCHESTER — The original 60 acre farm and barn of Wild Duck Hollow Farm were purchased in 1907 by Edward and Rosa Little when they moved from Stark County. Edward died a few years later, leaving the farm, Rosa and their three children. Their son, Clyde, his wife, Mildred and their three children added improvements and additions beginning in 1935. As the farm continued to grow in 1968, Clyde’s son, Delmer, his wife Betty and their six children took over operations. A partnership was formed in 1997 by Delmer’s son, Mike, his wife, Sue, and Nat and Damion Wallace, grandsons. The partners continue operations today with family help from their wives, Stacy and Ashley. There are currently three generations working this 225 acre farm where about 95 Jersey, Holsteins and Aryshire cows are milked.

All of the 100 replacement heifers are raised on the farm by family members. In the broiler chicken facility, approximately 800,000 chickens are raised per year. All corn silage and hay are grown on the farm for the cows with supplemental grains purchased locally. The original double decker bank barn is still used for hay storage as well as housing for the cattle. The post and beam construction is clearly visible from the floor. In December 2011 the farm was awarded Century Farm by the Ohio State Deparment of Agriculture since records indicate that the farm has been in continuous farming operation for 104 years by the Little Family.
