FALL DESIGN TRENDS
KIM COOK, For The Associated Press
For keeping track of this fall's decor trends, you might want your GPS handy. We're headed into the urban jungle, then off to the Great Continents. Designers have also set the Wayback Machine for the 1970s. Designers are using city streets as both literal and figurative inspiration this fall, with pieces that have urban edge.
This product image courtesy of Design Within Reach shows Verner Panton's System 1-2-3 dining chair. Design Within Reach has reproduced several of Danish-born Verner Panton's pieces, including this swivel-based chair, available upholstered in orange or gray.

French designer Philippe Nigro's Tu table for Ligne Roset is a sleek wood slab anchored to the floor with industrial, leggy, steel clamps in white, ebony or red. Target has a steel-based accent table with a faux concrete top. CB2's fall collection includes a stoneware bowl etched with a tire tread pattern; Matthew Lew's striking black and white prints of Chicago architectural details; and the Bingo rug, with a black, white and yellow graphic resembling city lights at night. Ted Boerner's Reverie media cabinet, crafted of blackened steel and textured glass door panels, evokes an urban warehouse facade. Rare Device stocks Ferm Living's cool map-of-Paris wallpaper. Brooklyn-based Haptic Labs embroiders quilts and throws with neighborhood maps of New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Bespoke Global co-founder and lighting designer Gwen Carlton enfolds a lightbulb with a silvery sculpted branch to create her Urban Forest pendant; she'll make the fixture in a custom size and finish.

fall/winter 2011
SILK ROAD STYLE From Indian bazaars, African souks and Asian markets we're seeing a feast of colors, patterns and style elements. Homegoods has floor poufs in vibrant cerise, lime and lemon hues in a riot of patterns. Watch for sequin embellishments, elephant and tiger motifs, homespun kalamkari prints, and metallic embroidery on cottons, silks and voiles from retailers like Urban Outfitters and World Market. Pottery Barn goes Moroccan with mango wood carved wall medallions, and stitched leather poufs. (Poufs, those pillowy versions of the ottoman, are popping up all over this fall.) Wisteria has African kuba cloth pillows featuring graphic patterns woven from raffia-palm fibers. And at Anthropologie, indigo-hued bedding, pillows and notebooks in Old World and Japanese Shibori-style prints. Mumbai native Reeta Gyamlani uses intricately carved camel bone and resin to craft gorgeous consoles and side tables for her Farrago label, also available through Bespoke Global. THAT '70S SHOW Before visions of macrame plant hangers and foiled wallpaper start crowding your brain, remember that the late '60s and early '70s also saw a lot of terrific design. Design Within Reach has reproduced several of Danish-born Verner Panton's pieces, including the System 1-2-3 chair, a swivel-based, cantilevered ribbon of coolness, upholstered in orange or gray. There's a tufted lounge version in chocolate leather. Panton's Barboy is an ingenious ebony mobile cylinder of pivoting components. It's not all serious chic, though — '70s style accessories are affordable fun. The Marimekko collection at Crate and Barrel is the era at its best, with clean bright colors and prints that pop. Look for retro Bargello flame stitching, paisley prints and granny squares on rugs, toss pillows and other soft furnishings at Target and Pier 1. Trend spotters are watching some other directions, too: nail-head detailing, and hammered, tarnished metallic finishes, for example. And, after several seasons dominated by contemporary design, a Victorian look is mixing things up. We're noticing traditional and reworked English prints, as well as trunks and suitcases with an antique, luggage-y vibe. Home decorators can go in many interesting directions when updating for fall.

SHRINKY FALL CRAFTING FUN
DINKS JENNIFER FORKER, For The Associated Press
The basic idea behind Shrinky Dinks hasn't really changed in the 38 years they've been around: The flexible sheets of shrinkable plastic can still be cut, colored and popped into an oven to shrink one-third in size, becoming hard and unbendable. But what was designed as a toy for kids has grown into a creative medium embraced by adult crafters, artists, even scientists. The Shrinky Dinks line has grown from the original frosted sheets to include white, clear and — the newest addition — plastic sheets for ink-jet printers. That means photographic images now can be made into Shrinky Dinks. The sheets are sold 10 to a package and also come in preprinted kits: monsters, pirates and sports motifs, to name a few. A similar shrink-plastic product, PolyShrink, is sold by the company Lucky Squirrel. Some Shrinky Dinks get turned into the usual kidfriendly magnets, photo frames, ornaments and dog tags. Others are being fashioned into stylish jewelry.
This product image courtesy of Jessica Poundstone shows a piece made with Shrinky Dinks designed by Poundstone. Poundstone creates jewelry exclusively from Shrinky Dinks. "It's certainly a material people who grew up in the '70s and '80s remember with nostalgia, but always with that kitschy association," says Kathy Sheldon, a crafts book author. "These new jewelers are using shrink plastic to make fresh, attractive jewelry you want to wear." Sheldon wrote the upcoming "SHRINK Shrank shrunk!" (Lark Crafts, 2012), which features 16 jewelry designers, in-

cluding Jessica Poundstone of Portland, Ore., who works exclusively in Shrinky Dinks material. She likes the freedom of creating her own designs and having control over the quality of her material. "I don't have to go out and depend on wholesalers for components," she says. "I can just make it myself." Other crafters stretching this plastic medium beyond its original, youthful use include June Gilbank of Cape Town, South Africa. A crochet pattern designer who has dabbled in shrink plastic, she found success with a simple ring. Her "shrink plastic ring tutorial" is posted at her blog, Planet June. Anna Boksenbaum, a public defender in Brooklyn, N.Y., incorporates monograms, text and vintage images into homemade shrinkplastic jewelry that she sells from her Etsy shop, Brass Isaac. And Giuseppina "Josie" Cirincione of Phoenix has gotten so successful making jewelry out of shrink plastic that she teaches "Shrinky Dinks" classes at an art center, and says professional photographers often show up as students.
The mother of Shrinky Dinks is Betty Morris, who came up with the idea as a Cub Scout leader in Brookfield, Wis. She and co-leader Katie Bloomberg read in a magazine that a plastic lid could be written on with permanent marker and shrunk in the oven. Later, when the boys were fighting over scraps of plastic, Morris and Bloomberg knew they'd hit upon a novel idea. Morris persuaded her skeptical husband, Chuck, to float her $600 for the first 1,000 pounds of plastic to launch the company. "I would never ever have imagined that Shrinky Dinks would still be on the market after all these years," says Morris. "I was just excited we were doing it for two weeks." Bloomberg later dropped out of the business for other work — she was mayor of Brookfield for 16 years — and Morris continued to run the company alone. Popular in the 1970s and '80s, Shrinky Dinks fell out of favor in the 1990s — until artists and crafters devised new uses for them. The ink-jet printer plastic, created in 2004, opened the crafting medium even wider.
"For them it's another way for showing their work," says Cirincione. "We've had a lot of ups and downs," says Morris. "But it's always "It's another medium." been on the market." Artists who dabble in Shrinky Dinks include James Jaxxa of New York City, who created "Hopeful Tree" for a Shrinky Dinks show in 2007 at Seattle's Zeitgeist Coffee. He likes the slightly unpredictable quality of the material: "With Shrinky Dinks, you're really out of control," says Jaxxa. "You can put it in the oven . and it might twist in some way that you didn't know would happen. The material itself almost forces another level of creativity that other materials don't." Zeitgeist owner Bryan Yeck holds the exhibit every couple of years; last year's Seventh Annual Shrinky Dinks National Exhibition & Auction included works by 90 artists from around the world. As for the sciences, shrink plastics are used by the dental industry to embed identification numbers in dentures. And they have inspired innovation in the field of biomedical engineering. Michelle Khine turned to her childhood craft when she didn't have the lab tools she needed in her research job at the University of California at Merced. Playing around with Shrinky Dinks in her kitchen, Khine created a low-cost alternative to silicon molds for microfabricated chips that had required sensitive, million-dollar equipment. Now an assistant professor at the University of California at Irvine, Khine has created other lab tools — including cell culture platforms for stem cells — with Shrinky Dinks plastics, and has launched a company, Shrink Nanotechnologies Inc.
Today, there are 300 Shrinky Dinks kits sold in 42 countries, says Morris, and a children's Shrinky Dinks oven, made by Big Time Toys of Nashville, Tenn., is planned.

Making your home more energy efficient By KEVIN HOWELL Staff Writer With the onset of winter, many homeowners may be looking at their heating bills, wondering how they can make their homes more energy efficient. But where does one start —what options are available without breaking the bank?
During an energy audit, several common tests should be performed to ensure optimum results, Hein said. The tests include: — Blower Door Test: uses calibrated fan placed in a doorway to calculate how much air a home leaks.
— Thermography: uses a high-resolution infrared camera to take thermal images of a home’s assemblies, revealing performance of Michael Hein, co-owner and BPI building analyst for The Green air barriers and insulation as well as any hidden moisture pathways Building Pros in North Lima, suggests an energy audit, a holistic ap- otherwise impossible to identify. proach to determining where a home is losing energy. “The whole house works as a system,” he explained. “(Energy au— Combustion Appliance Testing: measures dangerous byproducts dits) help get customers the most bang for their buck by finding the of combustion, such as carbon monoxide, that every combustion apright application for each situation.” pliance produces. — Gas Leak Detection: finds natural gas leaks in a home. According to Hein, clues to watch for when considering an energy audit include one room that is always hot or cold, drafts in the home — Moisture Meter: finds out how saturated with moisture strucand musty smells or mold and water problems. Energy audits should tures in a home are. also be conducted during any renovation or remodel in the home, when replacing a heating or cooling system or after the purchase of — Duct Blaster Test: uses a calibrated fan to pressurize ductwork to a new home. determine any performance issues. When looking to improve energy efficiency, Hein suggests the following guidelines: — Don’t judge by cost alone. — Don’t look for the cheapest job or the most expensive, he said. “The cheapest probably isn’t doing everything and the most expensive is probably overcharging. Look for one that meets your needs.” — Debunk the myth. “The belief that windows are the biggest problem is a common misconception,” he said. “Sure they can be leaking energy, but don’t stop with them.” — Look at other areas of leakage. “Air leakage is usually the biggest issue,” he said, noting areas that commonly leak air include electrical and plumbing penetration, the rim joist in the basement and canned lighting. — Consider utility program incentives. “Utility programs offer incentives for people to fix their homes,” he said. “So there is money out there for certain projects.” — There are no shortcuts on energy assessments. “Make sure they are certified and make sure they are proving the improvement in efficiency,” he said. “If they aren’t doing the blower door test, you don’t know for sure.” Kevin Howell can be reached at khowell@salemnews.net

If you have roll- or blanket-type insulation, pull up a piece and look at the backing, which should have the R-value printed on it. You may also find loose, brownish material known as vermiculite. Be careful, as vermiculite is sometimes contaminated with hazardous asbestos (call an insulation specialist if in doubt).

Chances are, you won’t find any. Interior insulation is common in finished basements and is applied in the space between framing members attached to the foundation wall (behind the drywall or paneling). As mentioned earlier, you can remove a few electrical cover plates to check. If parts of your home are uninsulated or underinsulated, the next step is to determine how much insulation to add. Call your local building department to ask for recommendations. You can also go to www.energystar.gov and search recommended levels of insulation to check recommendations for your area. SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HOME ENERGY BILLS! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average American home will spend $1190 on heating this year.
What is Infrared Heat? Infrared heat is also called radiant heat which is simply a form of energy that heats objects directly, without having to heat the surrounding air. Radiant heat is also called infrared energy or IR. The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into three segments by wavelength, measured in microns or micrometers (a micron = 1/1,000,000 of a meter): 0.076 to 1.5 microns = near or close, 1.5 to 5.6 = middle or intermediate, 5.6 to 1000 = far or long wave infrared. The far infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum occurs just below, or “infra” to, red light as the next lowest energy band. This band of light is not visible to human eyes but can be seen by special cameras that translate infrared into visible colors. We can, however, feel this type of light, which we perceive as heat. The sun produces most of its energy in the infrared segment of the spectrum. Our atmosphere has a “window” in it that allows infrared rays in the 7 to 14 micron ranges-to safely reach the earth’s surface.
The Advantages of Infrared Heat A HUGE advantage of infrared heaters is that not only are they energy efficient but they are economically efficient. They cost only pennies a day to run and they run on a 110 outlet! Another advantage is infrared heaters are SAFE!! The cabinets do not get hot, your children and pets can play safely around them without you having to worry about them getting burned. (Do not let your children put their fingers in the output grill as it gets hot as the heated air passes through it.) Infrared heat is a type of heat that does not
take moisture out of the air. This helps your skin in the winter months not dry out due to dry air in your home. It also does not take oxygen out of the room like many other types of heaters. With an infrared zone heater the heat can be generated where people spend the most time. After all, there is no point to heating guest bedrooms, laundry rooms or other unused rooms, to 70+ degrees when not in use. Most Infrared heaters are designed to heat a room or a couple adjoining rooms. In homes with open floor plans it is sometimes possible to heat several rooms from one Infrared heater. Infrared heats a room evenly from floor to ceiling with less than a 2 degree difference in temperature. Infrared energy penetrates your skin. Its energy output is tuned to correspond closely to the body’s own radiant energy so that body tissues absorb close to 93 percent of the infrared waves that reach the skin. A process called “resonant absorption” is how our bodies take in the infrared heat. Unlike other heat sources, Infrared is heating your body instead of objects around you.
What is Zone heating? When you turn your thermostat down and just heat the areas of the home you and your family spend their time in, this is called zone heating. Turning down the thermostat on a central furnace and using an infrared heating product as a supplemental heat source makes it easy to save money on home energy. Many of our homeowners are setting their thermostats to 60 - 65 degrees and heating more than one room with an infrared heater and saving as much as 50% on their energy bills. This savings is a direct result of a reduction in the amount of fuel needed to

heat their home as well as using a more economical energy source. Zone heating is often extremely beneficial in homes with older central furnaces that tend to lose heat through inefficient operation and leaky duct-work.
How do Infrared Heaters differ from one another? There are many infrared products on the market for zone heating, so how is one different from the other? Every infrared heater is made up of filters, heating elements, copper heat exchangers, power cords, wheels, cabinets and warranties. Each component can be made with a wide variety of products some with far less quality materials. Make sure you see what you are buying. Another consideration is whether it is made in the U.S.A. or it is imported as U.S. regulations are more stringent..
How do I make a decision on what heater is right for me? Much like any other appliance, it is important to spend the time to choose the right infrared heater that fits your home heating needs. At Summer Fun Pools we understand zone heating. We offer many makes and models including EdenPURE® and SunHeat. We will be glad to educate you on the products and help you determine what Infrared heater will meet your particular needs. Stop by or call us at (330) 424-7665.

NOW YOU CAN SWIM IN BOTTLED WATER! If ECOsmarte Is This Awesome It Must Be Expensive With High Maintenance Costs.
Salt-Free Chlorine-Free I don’t want to swim in toxins anymore, but want to have clear water. How does it work? By using a combination of ionization and oxidation, ECOsmarte requires no chemicals to sanitize your pool. It produces copper ions to kill bacteria and other organisms, effectively sanitizing your pool. The oxidation process then “burns up” the dead organic matter resulting in a natural non-chemical “shock” to clean and clarify your pool.
Ionization Oxygen Instead of regular testing and adjusting 8+ different chemicals (including some toxic chemicals) ECOsmarte only requires the occasional testing of pH, and copper, requiring very little maintenance. ECOsmarte is an environmentally friendly option for pools and spas. It eliminates the need for salt, chlorine and other toxic chemicals such as cyanide based stabilizers. ECOsmarte is for residential AND commercial use in pools and spas, as well as home drinking water treatment.
Actually, purchasing an ECOsmarte is usually equal to or less than purchasing a salt chlorine generator. It only costs about $1 per month to operate rather than the $5 - $11 per month average of salt - chlorine generators. ECOsmarte has a titanium and copper chamber that has a 4-7 year life expectancy and costs around $175 to replace. Salt generators have cells that need to be replaced every 3 - 5 years and cost over $450 to replace.
Many states are banning brine (salt generators) and certain chemicals, people who live in these areas and already have salt water generators are not grandfathered in. They will have to replace their systems with something safer! Some manufacturers’ warranties void when putting their products on pools using salt generators. Other manufacturers use disclaimers requiring additional annual maintenance to protect their products against salt generators.
What If I Travel Often? Going to be away from home and do not want to worry about your pool water? No problem, ECOsmarte has two options, the “TURBO” and the “PROGRAMMABLE”.
OTHER ADVANTAGES Only one time per week water testing (after conversion/start up). Will not void warranty or corrode like salt generators will, but actually extend the life of the following products: • Solar Covers • Heaters • Auto Covers • Sidewalk • Filter Systems • Coping • Diving Boards • Ladders • And more Vinyl liners will never bleach, become brittle or “rust” on ECOsmarte.

The company has choppers, whippers and microsteamers. Updated FridgeSmart containers with the two familiar vents are embedded with dishwasher-resistant charts recommending how much air to let in for various fruits and vegetables. Broccoli’s a heavy breather, for instance. Asparagus isn’t.
The “party plan” for selling in homes to friends and neighbors was put in place by inventor Earl S. Tupper’s right hand, a divorced mom from Detroit named Brownie Wise, after Tupper’s failed attempts to sell in stores. Home parties remain the way most consumers scoop up their Tupperware, though there’s an option to host online parties and Tupperware itself sells from its website. Admired by House Beautiful in 1947 as “Fine Art for 39 Cents,” Tupperware today is functional, fun and fashionable, but it isn’t cheap. The microwave SmartSteamer, for example, goes for $139 and a seven-piece Vent ‘N Serve set for $130. “It IS quite pricey, but it lasts forever,” HallmanMorris said. “It really does.”

Not bad for a New Hampshire farm boy and failed tree doctor who barely graduated high school. Tupper’s base material and introduction to the business came at DuPont during a year’s stint in its plastics division in Leominster, Mass. But it was the flamboyant Wise, not the all-business Tupper, who refined the party plan, allowing the company to soar to 20,000 dealers by 1954, a golden year. Stanley Home Products used the party plan before Tupperware came along, but Wise refined it, whipping women into a frenzy for selling the newfangled plasticware. She first peddled Stanley, adding a bit of Tupperware to the mix and later switching altogether, catching Tupper’s eye with an impressive sales network in Detroit, then Florida. Appointed vice president and head of sales, Wise promised real money and recognition for hard workers, without the need for formal education or job experience. The company’s lifetime guarantee that products won’t chip, break, crack or peel remains in place. So do big-ticket incentives for top sellers. “I basically was able to walk away from not knowing where my next paycheck was coming from,” said Kevin Farrell, a Los Angeles actor who dons Daisy Dukes, crazy makeup and a blonde wig to sell Tupperware in drag as the brash southern trailer-dweller Dee W. Ieye.
Wise, an admirer of positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Peale, put on splashy Homecoming Jubilees every year for hundreds of Tupperware Ladies. woman to make the cover of Business Week, in 1954, well before Mary Kay, Martha Stewart or Oprah. But four years later, Wise was unceremoniously dumped by the quirky, paranoid Tupper after seven heady years with the company. The falling out was complicated, fed by Tupper’s disdain for Wise’s excesses and his desire to sell the company to avoid heavy estate taxes in the event of his death, by some accounts. According to Kahn’s film, Tupper felt that suitors for the company would have no interest in taking on a female at the top. After receiving a paltry $35,000 settlement, slightly less than her annual salary, Wise was unable to make her Tupperware magic reappear. She dabbled in real estate, took up pottery making and died in relative obscurity in 1992 at age 79. “She was living the life she wanted to, but Tupper held all the cards. She poured her whole life into Tupperware,” said Bill Kealing, who wrote the 2008 book “Tupperware Unsealed” (University Press of Florida).
“Brownie made it clear, if you’re divorced, married, single, disabled, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Christian, it doesn’t matter. Tupperware is an opportunity for you,” said Laurie Kahn, who wrote, produced and directed the 2004 PBS documentary “Tupperware!” “These women were very traditional, yet they were subverting the system from the inside,” she said. “They could earn more money than their husbands if they were successful, and be able to put their kids through college and buy houses.” Some made millions and nurtured their own sales forces. Husbands quit jobs as firefighters, factory workers or truck drivers to help when their wives’ Tupperware sales took off, Kahn said.
Tupper’s patent for his famous air-tight, leak-proof seal, modeled on inverted paint can lids, expired about a year after he fired Wise. He sold the business for $16 million to Rexall Drug Co., renounced

Save time and money on your kitchen remodel (NAPS)—Home remodeling projects can be daunting, especially in the kitchen. Most home remodeling veterans will agree that the biggest frustrations during a kitchen renovation are the unexpected delays. Thankfully, there are things you can do to defray this time lost by choosing products that are made to work together seamlessly, like cabinets and countertops.
“Even though the Kuppersmith house was a huge undertaking, Merillat and DeNova’s integration made for quick and easy installation and was perfect for the project,” said Lipford. “In fact, we were able to utilize this partnership all over the house, including the bathrooms, dining room and living room, to help simplify the remodel while making each room beautiful and functional.”
Advice for a Smooth Kitchen Makeover One home improvement expert, Danny Lipford, has had his fair share of remodeling headaches and setbacks. He shares his remodeling experiences and tips for seamless renovations as the host of “Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford®.” Lipford wants to educate homeowners on challenges they will face during their remodel, while providing them with tips and practical ideas for their next project.
The integration of cabinets and countertops in a remodeling or new construction project has many benefits.
“No matter how extensive your research and planning are before you begin your remodeling projects, you need to expect delays,” explains Lipford. “That’s why, for my biggest project yet, I chose to go with a cabinet/countertop partnership that helped make the kitchen renovation run smoothly and avoid those delays.” Lipford’s latest project was a top to bottom renovation of an old Tudor-style home in Mobile, Ala., which he calls The Kuppersmith Project. This project was documented in a 13-part series on “Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford.” Through this project, Lipford showed viewers realistic approaches to remodeling. One practical approach was the partnership between Merillat® cabinetry and DeNova™ countertops. This partnership integrates the design, selection and installation of cabinets and countertops, making the process of remodeling a kitchen much more seamless.
• One point of contact. Selecting the cabinetry and the countertops together helps ensure optimal color and style matching. • Flawless templating. DeNova’s state-of-the-art templating process uses precise, laser technology to accurately measure countertop surfaces, replacing traditional paper, cardboard or plywood templating. The new process allows the cabinets and countertops to fit flawlessly together and can significantly reduce the installation cycle time and ensures just the right fit. • Efficient scheduling. Scheduling of the installation is easier because in most cases the cabinetry, countertops and sinks are delivered to the job site simultaneously, and one crew handles the installation. So not only do you save time, but money, too. The Merillat and DeNova integration is just one way to avoid delays with your remodeling project. It is important to be prepared for unexpected setbacks, but if you take advantage of a process like this to make your project more seamless, you will find that your remodeling experience is much more enjoyable.

New app shows how to lighten up (NAPS)—Picture this: your home bathed in natural, all-encompassing daylight, courtesy of skylights. Now you can picture it with the help of a new interactive app for personal devices including iPhones, iPads, iPods and Androids. Just go to veluxusa.com and enter “planner” to download the free app. Then you just snap photos of your rooms and click through the app to see how different skylights make a dramatic difference. You can locate nearby installers, get product information and even e-mail your pictures. Among the places you may care to consider installing a skylight are: • The bathroom: According to American Standard, homeowners say the No. 1 option for the ultimate dream bathroom would be a skylight. • A child’s room: Students perform significantly better in environments that are lit with natural light. • An older person’s room: Researchers McFarland and Fisher report that to accommodate the aging eye, the amount of light required doubles every 13 years after age 20. • The kitchen: This crucial space should be as comfortable and functional as possible, with natural light and ventilation being the key elements. According to Chan Hoyle, national marketing and communications manager for skylight manufacturer VELUX America, “Venting skylights can passively exhaust heat and cooking odors as well as VOCs from the kitchen and other areas of the home.” The company offers ENERGY-STAR®–qualified No-Leak Skylights with many energy-saving features. Saving on your home telephone bill What the Experts Say The best place to start your money-saving quest is to evaluate your purchase decisions. For example, research the various types of home phone services on the market, such as digital voice (which plugs into your Internet and existing home phone, so you can call anywhere in the U.S. for free) vs. a traditional landline. Read newspaper articles on the subject and professional reviews in magazines and visit websites you trust. These resources can help you create an inventory of features that are and aren’t important to you. Keep this “features” and “service options” list handy for the next step. What Others Think Read user reviews, keeping track of the services that people like and don’t like and map them back to your “features” list. Keep in mind that some of the features with negative reviews might be ones you don’t need or care about. For example, the No. 1 thing on your list is call quality, right? Look for a service with good reviews on sound, maybe even one a professional reviewer praised for voice-enhancing technology, such as Ooma, which is known for its high-definition (HD) voice quality. Or maybe you have small
children or elderly parents at home and need a service that will alert you to any 911 situations when you’re away. Once you’ve narrowed your “features” list even further, move on to the most important evaluation step. Time vs. Money How much time and effort does it take, exactly, to change to a new service? Is it easy to install and use? How does its setup compare to others? Check out user reviews of the setup process and compare the feedback to how much money you’ll save over the course of a year. Watch out for pitfalls, such as having to leave your computer on all the time if switching to certain kinds of digital voice. Then, look for perks like a home phone service that will let you keep your phone number or one offering unique and advance features that still lets you save without sacrifice. Once you’ve done your research and determined what you want from your home phone, finding and getting the one that’s right for you should be much easier. You can learn more online at www.ooma.com.
