The 2014 Canfield Fair offers something for everyone CANFIELD —Still the largest county fair operated in Ohio’ s 88 counties, the Canfield Fair is planning a full slate of activities for 2014. Running from Aug. 27-Sept. 1, the fair is entering its 168th year. Headlining those activities are Grammy winning artist Reba and rising country music star Justin Moore. Joining Reba on Aug. 31 will be The Willis Clan, stars of self-title reality series on GAC. Moore will be joined by fellow country musician Randy Houser on Sept. 1. If a concert isn’ t what you are looking for then, maybe a truck and tractor pull sponsored by Full Pull Productions and USA-East, is what you want. Scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 30, the pull will feature the ever popular Smoker Series. There will also be a limited pro/super farm tractor, modified 4x4 trucks, semi-trucks, and an unlimited class. The modified 4x4 class is by invitation only and limited pro/super farm competitors will qualify through the USAEast point race. On Aug. 29, the fair will host the World’ s
Largest Demolition Derby presented by JM Productions. The derby harkens back to the olden days of demolition derbies, before custom built engines and re-enforced frames became the norm. All cars remain factory, with glass and interior, minus the front seats, removed. Doors are chained shut with only the driver’ s door permitted to be welded shut. Although the noise level is much quieter, the level of destruction is the same. New to the 2014 fair is the Lucas Oil Monster Truck Nationals at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27. Prior to the monster truck show, fans can visit the pits during a free pit party beginning at 6 p.m. There will also be cheerleading demonstrations during the afternoon on Aug. 27, followed by school band concerts on Aug. 28. Other events include bike night beginning at 3 p.m. Aug. 28, harness racing, and the draft pony pigiron derby. Maybe its the food and atmosphere that draw you to the fair. If that’ s the case, then the Canfield Fair offers miles of food vendors, animal barns, free performances around

the grounds, and rides. History buffs will love the Western Reserve Village, which features restored historical buildings, the antique farm machinery and Antique Carriage Museum. Those looking to see farming aspects up
close can view the daily milkings in the milking parlor. Those brave enough can even attempt to milk a cow by hand. With this and more available every day, there is more than enough reason to give the Canfield a visit or two.

Valley history preserved at fairground
Standing at the south end of the Western Reserve Village is the church, which brings fulfillment to the dream of fair directors Bob Rose and C. Gilbert “Gib” James. The dream to preserve the Connecticut Western Reserve heritage of the Mahoning Valley by reconstructing a typical town began in 1965. The church was originally designed during the 1800s and is currently used for wedding ceremonies by those in the community. The church and other village buildings are part of a non-profit foundation which maintains and continues the village preservation efforts. The law office of Elisha Whittlesey was the first building moved to the village in 1965. Whittlesey was the nation’ s first comptroller or controller of the U.S. Treasury under President Zachary Taylor. He also helped in the formation of the Mahoning County Agricultural Society, which is the founding organization of the Canfield Fair. Whittlesey’ s law partner Judge Eben Newton served as the agricultural society’ s first president. The two men had their law office built in 1840 on Canfield’ s Village Green. Another building, the log cabin, was relocated from Slater Road in Butler Township, Columbiana County. Following the log cabin’ s relocation, the railroad station, watchman’ s tower and country store were added. Handmade bricks salvaged from another County Home building are used throughout the village. Completing the village are the restored Carriage Museum and gazebo. The entire village is laid out around an oval grassy area, also known as a commons, with each building facing each other. This setup, including the brick walkways lining the area, was typical of early American towns.

Reba, country music’s queen, will play the Canfield Fair
Reba will take to the Canfield Fair Stage at 8 p.m. Aug. 31 with opening act The Willis Clan.
Country music always has a queen and over the years the “title” has been held by the likes of Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, June Carter Cash and Reba. And although Reba hasn’ t released a studio album since 2010’ s “All The Women I Am,” she still holds the title over other big names like Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. Reba proved why she still holds the crown during her All The Women I Am tour where she was ranked the number one female country touring artist by both Pollstar and Billboard’ s Boxscore. During that 2011 tour she sold a combined total of nine million tickets. Her single from the “All The Women I Am” album “Turn on the Radio,” was her 64th Top 10 hit and her 35th number one, making her the biggest female hit-maker in country
music history. Not only has she been a top tour draw but she is also a major influence on many of today’ s female artists, including Swift and Underwood. She has also influenced award winners Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, and daughter-in-law Kelly Clarkson. Over her career, which began in 1975, she has sold over 56 million albums worldwide making her one of the most successful female recording artists in history. She is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. During her four decades of success she has won 15 American Music Awards, 13 ACM Awards; nine People’ s Choice Awards, seven CMA Awards, and two Grammys. She has also received the ACM Career Achievement Honor and is one of only four entertainers in
history to receive the National Artistic Achievement Award from the U.S. Congress. She was the singer to win the CMA’ s Female Vocalist of the Year award four consecutive times. Reba now shares the title with Lambert, who won her fourth straight in 2013. In 1990, Reba took to the big screen playing the role of Heather Gummer in “Tremors.” A few movie and television roles later, she starred in the WB/CW show “Reba.” The show ran for six seasons and earned her a Golden Glob Award nomination for Best Actress-Television Series Musical or Comedy. She also starred in the short lived sitcom Malibu Country. Reba tackled Broadway in 2001 starring as Annie Oakley in the musical “Annie Get Your Gun. Reba will take to the Canfield Fair Stage at 8 p.m. Aug. 31 with opening act The Willis Clan.

Justin Moore is heating up the country music charts
Justin Moore will appear at the Canfield Fair Sept. 1.
Heating up the country charts with his good ol boy charm is Justin Moore. Moore, the proud son of Poyen, Arkansas, has seen his star rise with hits such as “Small Town USA,” “Point at You,” and “Backwoods.” He first garnered attention in 2008 with the single “Back That Thing Up,” followed by his first number one “Small Town USA.” Both were off his debut self -titled album which debuted at number 3 on the Top Country Album chart. Moore co-wrote nine of the album’ s 10 tracks.
He brings a sense of humor to some of his songs such as the Top 20 single “Bait a Hook.” In the song, Moore picks on an exgirlfriend’ s new beau for not being country enough or able to bait a hook. Moore also isn’ t afraid to cross musical genres, teaming up with Motley Crue’ s Vince Neil to record a cover of their hit “Home Sweet Home.” He has also teammed up with 2013 CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Miranda Lambert on the somber song “Old Habits.”
In just five years, Moore has released three albums, two of which 2011’ s “Outlaws Like Me” and 2013’ s “Off the Beaten Path” have reach number one. He has also scored four number ones and eight Top 20 singles. He was also named the 2014 New Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music. Currently you can hear Moore, along with fellow hot country artists Thomas Rhett and Brantley Gilbert on Gilbert’ s “Small Town Throwdown.”
Canfield Fair facts In 2008, some 1,100 cases of lemons were purchased to make Lemon Shake-up. At 140 lemons per case, this works out to 154,000 lemons. Since a half a lemon is used in each Lemon Shake-up, 308,000 of the thirst-quenching treats were sold in 2008.

Randy Houser is a fast-rising star Randy Houser went from song writer to performer after garnering the attention of late night host David Letterman in 2008. Letterman personally asked Houser to perform on his show after hearing his single “Anything Goes.” He followed up the performance with his debut album of the same title which reached number 21 on the charts. The album also contained the Top 10 hit “Boots On.” Before the release of “Anything Goes,” Houser was co-writing songs for some of country’ s hit performers. Among his song writing credits is Trace Adkins’ hit “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and tour partner Justin Moore’ s first single “Back That Thing Up.” He recently worked with Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band on the song “Along for Ride” which is available on his new album
“How Country Feels.” The album’ s self-titled single is Houser’ s first radio number one and Gold certified track. It was also his fastest rising single to date. Following its release he was a sought after act for television talk shows, including Conan, FOX & Friends, Houser NBC Nightly News and more. The song, which Houser wrote, earned him accolades from 20 time Grammy winner Vince Gill. Gill called House “one of the best in the new crop of country singer-songwriters.” Houser will be opening for Justin Moore on Sept. 1.
