Singing is in Reba McEntire’s blood, as her mother Jacqueline, let go of her country music dreams to raise a family and work as a school teacher. Under the leadership of her mother, McEntire formed the Singing McEntires with her brother, Pake and sister, Susie. The eldest sister Alice did not participate. The group sang at rodeos, where her father was a three time World Champion Steer Roper, and recorded “The Ballad of John McEntire” together. Released on indie label, Boss, the song pressed 1,000 copies and in 1975, McEntire had left the family band, signing a recording contract with Mercury Records. Her first recordings for Mercury, “I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand” failed to become a major hit peaking at number 88 on the Billboard Country Chart in May of 1976. In August of 1977 her self-titled debut was released, sounding more like Tanya Tucker and Tammy Wynette than the Reba heard today. The album failed to chart but two years later her second album, “Out of a Dream,” garnered her, her first Top 20 hit. Stalling at number 19 on the country charts was her cover of Patsy Cline’s “Sweet Dreams.” McEntire cemented her status as a country star in 1986, beginning with her induction into the Grand Ole Opry on Jan. 17. Her album, “Whoever’s in New England”

was also released with the title track reaching number one. It also won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Entertainer of the Year from the Country Music Association. During the late 1980s, she became known for her videos classified as “mini movies.” Those mini movies helped her transition into her next profession, acting. She earned her first film role opposite Kevin Bacon in the 1990 horror comedy, “Tremors.” She followed the role with the made-for-television movie, “The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw,” co-starSee REBA, Page 11

After hitting the country charts in 2001 with the release of his first single “Austin,” Blake Shelton has been leaving his mark on the country music scene. The self-titled album peaked at number three on the charts and was eventually certified gold. Shelton’s second album, “The Dreamer,” featured the number one hit “The Baby.” Following the release of his third album, “Barn & Grill” he began to find continued success. With top ten singles “Some Beach,” “Nobody But Me” and the Conway Twitty cover “Goodbye Time,” the album soared up the charts. By 2007 he began to branch out to TV serving as a judge on “Nashville Star,” and later “Clash of the Choirs.” He also branched musically covering the single “Home,” originally sung by pop crooner Michael Buble. “Home,” which became his fourth number one was quickly followed by “She Wouldn’t Be Gone,” which marked the first time in his career where he had two consecutive number ones. Since 2007 he has not had a single peak outside the top ten. Shelton took over the airwaves in October 2009 with “Hillbilly Bone,” a duet with Trace Adkins, followed by “All About Tonight” and “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking.” The “All About Tonight” album was his first number one album and

It went to number one on the charts by week 10. Currently Shelton is a coach on the hit NBC show “The Voice,” which will return for a second season. He also topped off 2011 by marring fellow country singer Miranda Lambert. On Sept. 5, Blake Shelton will bring his talents to the stage along with Chris Young, beginning at 8 p.m.

Yates was a performer on the Louisiana Hayride, which was known as the Cradle of the Stars, during its late 1940s radio hayday. While growing up in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Young showed interest in music while performing in children’s theater productions, and while attending Oakland High School he began performing at local clubs. He continued traveling the club circuit while attending college, performing over 150 shows a year. In 2006, he won “Nashville Star,” country music’s version of “American Idol,” and received a contract with RCA Records. His self-titled first album, peaked at number three on the Billboard Top Country Albums and at number 22 on the Billboard 200 charts. Singles “Drinkin Me Lonely” and “You’re Gonna Love Me” reached numbers 42 and 48 on the Billboard Hot Country Song Charts respectively. Western Reserve Village has grown over the years

Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer

Eli Dunn of Winona gets his Grand Champion broiler chickens ready to sell. His pen of two chickens brought $600 at auction.

Standing serenely at the south end of the Western Reserve Village is the church, which brings fulfillment to the dream of Fair Directors Bob Rose and C. Gilbert “Gib” James. The dream to preserve the Connecticut Western Reserve heritage of the Mahoning Valley by reconstructing a typical town began in 1965. The church was originally designed during the 1800s and is currently used for wedding ceremonies by those in the community. The church and other village buildings are part of a non-profit foundation which maintains and continues the village preservation efforts. The law office of Elisha Whittlesey was the first building moved to the village in 1965. Whittlesey was the nation’s first comptroller or controller of the U.S. Treasury under President Zachary Taylor. He also helped in the formation of the MahonSee VILLAGE, Page 9

ing County Agricultural Society, which is the founding organization of the Canfield Fair. Whittlesey’s law partner the Honorable Judge Eben Newton served as the agricultural society’s first president. The two men had their law office constructed in 1840 on Canfield’s Village Green. Another building, the log cabin, was relocated from Slater Road in Butler Township located in Columbiana County. Following the log cabin’s relocation, the railroad station, watchman’s tower, and country store were added. The train station was once owned by the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Co., while the tower was moved from North Jackson. A steam locomotive, retired from Youngstown Sheet and Tube, was also moved to the train station along with a red caboose. Also found on the grounds, is an one-room schoolhouse, built in 1900 at the corner of Leffingwell and Knauf Roads, in Ellsworth Township. Once the schoolhouse was permanently placed in 1967, the Beaver Branch Library was moved from North Lima to the fairgrounds. In 1968, one of the first saw mills in Canfield was cut in half and reconstructed on the grounds, providing the village with a blacksmith shop. The office of Dr. Stewart G. Patton was added in 1972. 1913, Dr. Patton worked out of the North Jackson private practice for 24 years. An old barn that once stood at the old Mahoning County Home on Herbert Road, Canfield, now stands at the village’s entrance, welcoming visitors into the past. The barn is supported by beams held together by pins, typical of that era’s construction. Handmade bricks salvaged from another County Home building are used throughout the village. Completing the village are the restored Carriage Museum and gazebo. Visitors will notice that the entire village is laid out around an oval grassy area, also known as a commons, with each building facing each other. This setup, including the brick walkways lining the area, was typical of early American towns.

She also began starring in the WB network sitcom, “Reba.” “Reba,” garnered critical acclaim and success, becoming one of the network’s highest-rated television shows. The show ran for six seasons and garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. McEntire continues to remain a fixture in country music, releasing two number one singles, “Consider Me Gone,” and “Turn on the Radio,” her 35th number one hit.
