3 great reasons to clean your car (BPT) - Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home - it’s a smart thing to do for your vehicles, too. A few simple steps can help boost your vehicle’s integrity and beauty while maintaining its value, plus you might even regain that new-car smell. 1. Your car is a reflection of who you are There’s no question your car is a reflection on you. Whether it’s all about horsepower, efficient gas mileage or four-wheel drive, your vehicle represents who you are, where you’ve been and where you intend to go.

The design, form and function are extensions of your style and personality. So, if you haven’t given it a wash in a while, what does that say about you? You wouldn’t walk out the door without a shower, a shave and a little spruce up. (Would you?) So why shouldn’t you show that same respect for your car? From dirt and dust to grit and grime, give that car its reflective shine at a WaterSavers car wash. WaterSavers professional car washes use an average of 40 gallons of fresh water or less per car, according to the International Carwash Association. As a frame of reference, that 10 minute shower you took used 25 gallons of fresh water. WaterSavers washes also recycle and filter the water to prevent harmful chemicals from entering groundwater supplies that feed rivers and streams. To find a WaterSavers car wash near you, visit Washwithwatersavers.com.

THE ROAD

2 . Regular car washes protect your paint job That beautiful factory paint job will dull and begin to chip away if you don’t maintain it. Regularly washing your car and waxing it will help keep your car looking as good as it did when you pulled out of the dealer lot. 3. Professional car washes help maintain the value of the vehicle

You might be more inclined to spend money on engine issues than the car’s exterior, but stains and rusting can drastically decrease the value of the vehicle over time. Especially after a long winter, exposure to the elements can cause damage. Professional car washes thoroughly clean the undercarriage of your vehicle, where there may be a buildup of road salt that could cause corrosion to the car’s exhaust and muffler system. Surviving accidents on major roads

If you’re ever in an accident on the highway, drive off the road if you can and don’t unbuckle your seat belt or get out of your car.

(NAPS)—It’s a cold, hard fact: Icy roads are dangerous for even the most experienced driver, and even in dry weather, multicar pileups have closed interstates. If you’re ever involved in an accident on the highway, take heed of a particular hazard: In many cases, people in multiplevehicle accidents are hurt or even killed after surviving the initial crash largely unscathed. Three things to remember to avoid being among them are: 1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffic deaths occur on freeways. People who get out of their cars are killed and injured far more often than those who stay inside; 2. Stay Belted: Even those who do stay in the car but unbuckle their seat belt are more easily and severely hurt by subsequent cars that pile into them; 3. Stay Calm and Connected: Don’t panic and don’t get into a discussion on the spot with another driver. Do try to signal the other drivers to get off the road to somewhere safe where you can exchange information and contact the police.

As one California Highway Patrol officer put it, “The best safe practice would be to stay in your vehicle with your seat

belt on. If your vehicle is drivable, we always recommend getting out of the roadway. Bottom line: The freeway is a very dangerous place for pedestrians to be, and people need to realize that the potential for major injuries or death skyrockets as opposed to being in your car with your seat belt on.” Added an EMT after a crash, “Never, never, NEVER get out of your car on a roadway unless your life is in imminent danger if you do not. “I can’t stress how dangerous it is to ever get out of your car on a road. You have absolutely no protection if someone plows into you, and if you are stopped, chances are much higher that someone will get hurt than if traffic were moving normally. Plus, if you are out of your car, busy exchanging information with someone else while standing in the road, you aren’t paying 100 percent attention to what might be coming up behind you, lessening your chances of getting out of the way when something goes wrong.” Learn More To help, experts on safety at the Accident Attorneys Organization developed a safety checklist that you can download at www.accidentattorneys.org and keep in your glove box.

The infamous Check Engine light (Family Features) It’s a situation that has likely happened to you. You’re driving down the road when out of nowhere the words “check engine” illuminate from the dashboard. While this glowing symbol may cause you to panic, there are a few things you should know about this common issue. “Motorists should not get spooked when the check engine light comes on,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “When illuminated, the check engine light usually means that a vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly.” List of common causes Common malfunctions that can cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If the light flashes, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may include catalytic converter damage.

“Even if the vehicle appears to be running normally, ignoring the warning light could result in more costly repairs,” continued White. “At the very least, the light could be alerting you to an engine problem that is negatively impacting fuel economy and costing you money.” Seek professional assistance When scheduling service, make sure the repair shop that examines your vehicle has professional technicians who are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair. The technician will connect your vehicle’s computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will provide trouble codes indicating why the check engine light was activated. Once the problem is identified and the repair is made, the car’s computer is then reset. For more information about the check engine light and other maintenance information regarding your automobile, visit www.carcare.org.

Top 10 battery care tips (NAPS)—To help you avoid getting stranded with a dead car battery on your next family road trip, Gale Kimbrough, also known as “Mr. Battery,” offers these suggestions: Helpful Hints 1. Take a few minutes to read about your battery in your car’s manual and become familiar with the type of battery it is, where it is and how it can be cleaned safely.

2. At the start of each new season, check the battery to make sure it is still fully charged for the excursions ahead. 3. When working with your car battery, wear protective eyewear, remove all jewelry and wear long sleeves to protect your arms from battery acid discharge. 4. Perform a visual inspection to see if the battery case is showing signs of extreme bulging, cracking or leaking. Replace your battery if you see any of these signs.

Checking the battery is a wise move before any long car trip.

5. If your battery has removable filler caps, open them and check the water level in each cell. If the level is low, add distilled water (not tap water) until the plates are covered, preferably to one-half inch above the plates. This prevents the buildup of sulfate crystals, which can reduce the overall battery charge and performance.

9. Be sure the battery is mounted securely in place to minimize vibration. Excessive vibration is harmful to the battery plates and terminals and could lead to battery failure. After completing reconnection, use a protective spray on the terminal connections.

6. Avoid overfilling, because heat can cause the electrolyte solution inside to expand and overflow.

10. Have your battery and electrical system professionally tested every three to six months, especially prior to heading out on a trip or extreme changes in temperature.

7. Clean up the connections by removing any corrosion and lead oxidation and make sure to brush the dirt and grime off the case.

In just 30 seconds, Interstate All Battery Center locations can provide a free printed analysis of your vehicle battery condition.

8. To remove the battery cables, first disconnect the negative cables and then the positive. To reinstall the cables, first connect the positive cables and then the negative.

Eliminate auto odors (NAPS)—When the smells of mud, slush, cigarettes, pets, food spills and so on linger in your car, you can drive them away if you know a few facts and hints. While common air fresheners use perfumes to try to cover up the smell, they provide only temporary relief that doesn’t often cover the entire vehicle. To truly eliminate odor, you have to control the cause. To that end, there’s an odor eliminator that uses ClO2 technology. It controls odor-causing bacteria, eliminating even the foulest smells quickly and permanently. The EPA-registered, patented technology of Star brite Auto Odor Eliminator is easy to use. Its deep-penetrating vapor gets into all areas of your car’s interior—under seats, into the upholstery and throughout the ventilation system—and works within hours. It’s also a great way to remove odors from RVs or boats that have been in seasonal storage. Once you’ve eliminated bad odors, keep your car smelling sweet: Vacuum it whenever you wash it; make sure there are

Detail your car like a pro

(Family Features) As warmer weather approaches, car lovers are eager to raise the garage doors and get behind the wheel to experience the thrill of the open road. Keeping your car in top condition lets you enjoy those moments to the fullest. “Choosing the right products for detailing and restoration can really make a difference when preserving your vehicle,” said Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson chairman and chief executive officer. “When you’re giving your car a full detail or even just a quick touch-up, you want to feel confident that your vehicle is protected and looks its best. Now you can bring the million dollar look of Barrett-Jackson home.” Whether it’s an older model you’ve lovingly restored or a more contemporary vehicle you want to keep looking like a million dollars, these tips will help maintain the appearance (and value) of your vehicle so you’re ready to roll in style.

Exterior A thorough cleaning will help shed accumulated dirt and sediment from a harsh winter, especially for a vehicle that is driven year round. Give special attention to the undercarriage, where potentially destructive materials such as salt can become trapped and corrosive. Even if your car is garaged for the winter, a wash is a good starting place to rinse away dust and start the season fresh.

Tires send a strong message about your vehicle. Brake dust, grime and dirt can give your car a dull and aged appearance, so take time to scrub not only the tires themselves, but also the wheels and surrounding carriage. Add shine with a water-based spray formula that contains silicone emulsions to penetrate the rubber.

Finish with a wax that gives an extra element of shine while protecting the finish in between washes. Barrett-Jackson’s Rapid Detailer and Liquid Wax Kit, which includes Liquid Wax, applicator pad and microfiber towel, provides a deep, wet shine with no residue and long-lasting durability. Formulated with hydrophobic polymers and genuine carnauba wax, it works on all exterior surfaces including plastic, rubber and trim. In addition to using quality detailing products, it’s also important to make sure you have the right car care accessories as well. Use a sponge or cleaning mitten that’s made for washing cars instead of an old rag. When applying wax, its best to use an applicator pad, or even better, buy a wax kit that includes one. Using a microfiber towel is great for buffing off wax or polishing interior and will not leave the lint typical of a cotton towel.

Interior Even if you’re meticulous about your car’s interior, odds and ends still find their way into crevices and under seats. Take a few moments to clear debris and then vacuum all over to remove any smaller particles.

An important aspect of keeping the interior looking new and healthy is replacing the moisture depleted by the sun’s harsh glare. One good option is a premium three-in-one product such as Barrett-Jackson Leather Cleaner & Conditioner, which contains glycerin moisturizers to clean, moisturize and protect leather. It can be used on leather and trim, and provides UV protection to help prevent fading, cracking and discoloration. Selecting a reliable repair shop

(Family Features) Work, school, errands and the other demands of family life put your vehicle at the center of it all, so when something goes wrong, you may find yourself overwhelmed.

* Are customers greeted and treated in a friendly and respectful manner? A simple phone call to the shop to inquire about their services can give you a glimpse into how they treat customers.

Finding a repair shop you can rely on can ease your frustration and get you back on the road.

* Does the business provide a written estimate? The business should complete a written estimate and request your signature prior to starting any repairs on your car.

“For most people, a vehicle is their second biggest investment next to a home,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “It makes sense to take the time to select an auto repair facility that will take the best care of that investment.” Asking a few simple questions can help you identify an auto repair shop to properly care for one of your most valuable assets. The Car Care Council recommends exploring these topics before choosing where to have your car repaired:

* What type of warranty does the shop offer? Most auto repair businesses offer a warranty on parts and labor, and the warranty is usually in writing or posted in the waiting area. * Does the business have a list of satisfied customers or references that it is willing to give you? Satisfied customers and recommendations from family, friends and neighbors are helpful in finding a good shop.

* Does the business employ certified technicians? Credentials and affiliations are indicators of professionalism and the management’s commitment to training and education.

* Is there a website you can visit? Many auto repair facilities have company websites that are worth checking out as they often include testimonials and additional information about the business.

* Is the shop and customer waiting area clean and organized? Cleanliness and organization are signs of a well-run business.

For a video with more advice for selecting your auto repair shop, as well as information on the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair, visit www.carcare.org.

Be ready for a road trip (Family Features) If your upcoming travel plans include a road trip, the last thing you want is unexpected car trouble to leave you stranded at the side of the road. A pre-trip vehicle check is the best way to ensure that your car is ready to get you to your destination. “Taking steps to have auto repairs performed before long distance driving will not only give you peace of mind, but will also help avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down when you’re miles from home,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. Protect your vehicle and your own safety by following these recommendations from the Car Care Council and complete a thorough pre-trip checklist before hitting the road:

* Check hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. * Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. * Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

* Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

You can also make sure your vehicle is road-trip-ready by taking better care of your vehicle throughout the year using tools such as the Car Care Council’s free personalized schedule and email reminder service, which can help you drive smart, save money and make informed decisions about your car.

* Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power.

To access this convenient service, or to order a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide, which is available electronically or as a booklet you can store in your glove box, visit www.carcare.org.

Safer driving on wet roads Russell Shepherd, a mechanical engineer for Michelin North America and self-proclaimed “tire nerd,” has certainly earned his informal title as evident by his 15 years of driving in almost every type of weather condition imaginable. Most concerning for him — wet weather. “Most people don’t realize how much wet roads af fect their driving,” says Shepherd. “When roads become wet, it takes longer to stop and more time to react, making it more important than normal to pay attention to your car and other drivers.” So, what can the average driver do? Shepard suggests getting to the bottom of things first — with the tires. Here are some tips: * Check all tires regularly for tread wear and pressure. Changes in season and temperatures make it a good time to check both. * Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, traction can become negatively affected. It only takes a small amount of water to mix with oil and dust to create a slick surface.

*Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to handle wet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, can make a big difference. This tire has a unique rubber compound engineered to maximize traction, and two sets of grooves to help channel water away from the tires to maintain that traction. The second set of grooves is hidden when the tire is new, but emerges as the tire wears. This distinctive design feature maintains the tire’s ability to funnel water away, even when worn, which prolongs the life of the tire and enhances driver safety. * Get in touch with your car. Take time to learn how your car responds on wet roads. Is the steering looser than normal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tires could be losing their grip. Slow down and get your tires checked as soon as possible. For more information about wet-weather driving and choosing the right tire for your car, visit www.michelinman.com/.

Maps still help with summer trips

So, while it may seem that paper maps have gone the way of Atari’s Pong, they are still just as important as ever — not to mention many other benefits that you don’t get with some GPS devices. “One of the greatest characteristics of paper maps is that you get all of the details, [such as] points of interest,” says Ochterbeck. “Plus, you don’t risk getting lost when you lose the signal or the battery dies on your cell phone or GPS device.” Another benefit is that, in addition to printed maps providing efficient ways of understanding road networks that surround particular areas, the information is very reliable. Plus, new specialized maps, like Michelin’s Zoom Maps, are aiming to enhance the paper map experience. Most people recognize Michelin for its tires, but, unknown to many, it also has a 112-year history of creating maps and travel guides. In fact, it provided the maps that were used by the Allies for the D-Day invasion.

(NewsUSA) - It’s the season of sunshine and road trips — and if you want to get the most out of your four-wheeled adventure, you better pack a map to go along with that electronic GPS. “The best reason to keep paper maps in your vehicle, especially on long road trips, is because GPS isn’t always reliable,” says Cynthia Ochterbeck, editorial director of Michelin Travel Partner. Confirming this trend, a 2013 Harris Interactive survey of 2,200 U.S. drivers who use GPS found that 63 percent say that the technology has led them astray at least once by pointing them in the wrong direction or creating complex, confusing and incorrect routes.

24 HOUR TOWING SERVICE

Improving on this history, the new Zoom Maps offer seven regional maps for travel in the U.S., with the ability to zoom in on more detail in urban areas. In addition, the new maps have a “not-to-be-missed” event calendar for regions, in an easy-to-fold system so you don’t have to unfold the entire map. “Technology is great, but a printed map is one of the most important tools a traveler in an unfamiliar setting can have — the battery doesn’t die, it is easy to use, and it allows you to make decisions on route changes if necessary,” says Ochterbeck. “Even better, there are no roaming or data charges to worry about.” For more information, visit www.michelintravel.com.

Accessories add to vehicle function (NAPS)—As the weather gets warm, vacationers will begin to set their sights on the open road. Whether it’s to get up close to that landmark that you’ve always wanted to see, visit old friends or visit extended family who live just a few states away, road trips offer great flexibility and excitement. While just about any vehicle will serve its purpose for a road trip, there are ways to modify a car or truck to make the experience more convenient and comfortable. In fact, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) estimates that Americans spend $33 billion annually on products that enhance the performance and styling of today’s vehicles. “There is something exhilarating about a leisurely drive, whether it’s sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned car with a great sound system or in a convertible with the top down,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of communications and events. “What’s really great is being able to personalize the vehicle to fit the needs of the drivers and passengers.” Below are a few tips and tricks on how you can make your vehicle ready for your next big road trip. • To protect the vehicle’s exterior from any rocky weather and/or road conditions, a paint protection film is an effective way to preserve the finish of your car, truck or SUV. For best results, this film should be professionally installed and applied on areas such as the hood, bumpers, mirror backs and other places that might be prone to scratches and chips. • Don’t underestimate the impact a good navigation system can have on your road trip. Aftermarket GPS and navigation systems with state-of-the-art technologies can be installed in just about any vehicle. Starting as low as $50, there are tons of options available to help you stay within your budget and get you to your destination. • Finding enough space is often a problem encountered when traveling on a road trip. To make room for personal items, consider a roof rack or cargo box to transport large

WEST END AUTO RENTAL & LEASING

pieces of luggage. Organizers for the trunk, center console and on the back of seats are available to help keep items in order and in arms’ reach. • A wireless tire pressure monitoring system can give you an accurate reading of your tire pressure at all times. By having sensors on each of the tires, the air pressure can be monitored and sent directly to your smartphone device, alerting you when one or more of your tires is low on pressure. This can help minimize any tire problems you might run into. Regardless of how you modify your vehicle, it’s always a good idea to have a roadside emergency kit in tow. Premade kits include items such as jumper cables, a flashlight, emergency whistle and a first-aid kit. You never know when you might need these things, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Wherever you’re headed, there are a variety of different automotive aftermarket products and accessories available to modify your vehicle in preparation for a road trip. New valve and sensing technology (NewsUSA) - “Innovation” is a term companies use quite often. While many companies are quick to brand themselves as inventive, very few have the legacy and pioneering spirit to be truly innovative. But occasionally, a few great companies manage to prove their claims of innovation by successfully extending core technologies into new fields and applications. You may be grasping at air when you try to explain valve and sensing technologies to a friend. While many don’t see or interact with these technologies on a daily basis, they are utilized in applications that many customers and end-users use each and every day -; and the roles these technologies play in your everyday safety and comfort shouldn’t go unnoticed. One such valve and sensing technology manufacturer, Schrader, takes innovation seriously. “Since 1891, our valve and sensing technology has played a critical safety role within global automotive applications. We invented the first pneumatic tire valve, the very same valve used on every vehicle in the world today. More recently, we pioneered tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), now required on all new vehicles in North America, and growing in European and Asian-Pacific countries,” says Paul Wise, director of marketing at Schrader. “However, what differentiates Schrader is our ability to extend these foundational technologies to new markets and applications.” For example, Schrader has been successful in adapting its sensor technology to monitor power transmission belts and industrial hoses, which are found in diverse applications for factory equipment, construction, agriculture, robotics and other markets as well. “Many of these applications are considered ‘capital equipment,’ meaning when the piece of equipment is down because of a broken belt or a burst hose, it translates to a real operational cost to owners,” said Enda McCloskey, vice president of

technology, Schrader. “Our new belt and hose monitoring systems remove the guess work about when to perform critical maintenance.” Schrader valve and sensing technology within automotive applications helps to save lives, reduce fuel costs, and reduce environmental impact via TPMS. Additionally, Schrader’s continued history of innovation has resulted in an all-electric way to better measure fuel levels in gas tanks as well as new flex fuel sensors for hybrid vehicles — its technology has even expanded to the medical field, including oxygen monitoring for hospital and patient environments. Saving money at the pump (Family Features) As gas prices continue to drop, motorists should take advantage of their savings at the pump and invest it back into their vehicles. By spending a little now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers can multiply fuel savings and save more money at the pump, according to the Car Care Council. Here are a few simple steps for motorists to be car care aware to improve fuel efficiency and save money in the long run: * Engine performance: Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of four percent. * Tire pressure: Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. * Motor oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer. * Air filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles.

* Gas cap: Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air. For more tips to increase savings and fuel efficiency for your vehicle, visit www.carcare.org.
