Getting your vehicle ready for fall and winter Bethesda, MD – October is Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to fall into a vehicle maintenance program and get your car ready for the challenges of harsh winter weather.
6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.
Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, the Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best:
7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.
1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.
2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.
9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.
4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

Radiator Flush
PAGE 4 • MORNING JOURNAL • FALL CAR CARE 2011 • MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2011
Fall preparation for your vehicles MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Finally, the summer is over and fall is here! And whether the first cold snap is only weeks or still months away, this is a great time to take advantage of the milder fall weather by popping the hood and winterizing your car. A task that is critical to fall car care is cooling system maintenance.
Hose clamps are often overlooked, but they shouldn't be, since they are your last line of defense against leaks or pressure loss. Be sure to use new clamps with new hoses.
Flush and fill your cooling system.
Performing a routine flush and fill is quick and easy, and it's cheap insurance against engine failure. The National Car Care Council recommends doing this every two years or 24,000 miles for most vehicles. Don't assume that simply draining your radiator is enough. To do the job right, you need to flush the system with a radiator flush product, not just plain water, to remove stubborn rust, grease, and sediment. Many motorists make the mistake of judging the condition of their antifreeze by its color. Contaminants like rust, sediment, or oil may cause the antifreeze to change colors, but it's the chemical breakdown over time that renders your antifreeze ineffective against freeze-ups, boil overs and corrosion. And old, weak antifreeze won't provide sufficient engine protection, regardless of the color. So play it safe, and change your antifreeze every two years or 24,000 miles. Replace your radiator hoses and hose clamps.
Replace any hoses that have brittle, spongy, or bulging

Replace your thermostat.
The thermostat controls coolant flow through the engine. If it fails, the engine will overheat. In most cars, the thermostat is in line with the upper radiator hose or at the inlet to the water pump. Play it safe and replace the thermostat when you change the radiator hoses. Replace your radiator cap.
A radiator cap does more than merely prevent antifreeze from sloshing out of your radiator. A properly functioning radiator cap also raises the cooling system pressure and increases the boiling point of the antifreeze/water mixture by about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This gives your engine added protection against boil overs. Like the other cooling system components, radiator caps don't last forever. Replace yours every time you flush and fill your cooling system. Pressure recommendations vary, so be sure to get the right cap for your vehicle.

areas. If the hoses are more than four years old, replace them regardless of their condition. As the corrosion inhibitors in your antifreeze break down, the radiator hoses begin to deteriorate from the inside out. Don't wait until a hose breaks to find out that you were overdue for replacement.

Drive safely this fall - tips for better driving Autumn is arguably one of the most beautiful times of year. But along with the changing leaves comes changing driving conditions. What should you do to prepare for the new season? 1. STEER CLEAR OF WET LEAVES. The fall foliage is beautiful, as long as it stays on the trees. But once those leaves start falling, get wet from rain they can become a serious driving hazard. Wet leaves are slippery and reduce traction. They can also cover parts of the yellow and white pavement markings on the road, making it difficult to determine shoulder and lane widths. Additionally, wet leaves can get clogged under your wiper blades, impeding wiper performance and visibility. Always keep your windshield clean of leaves, and watch for wet leaves on the roads especially as you are making turns. Also, park free of leaf piles as these can be a fire hazard against catalyst converters. 2. MAKE ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE LIGHT.
We lose a minute of daylight every day until the clocks are set back in October. And shorter days mean shorter light, making it more difficult to see pedestrians, cyclists, and children playing in the late afternoon. Be on the lookout. If night vision is a problem, adjust your driving times or find alternate, well–lit routes whenever possible. On the flip side, later sunrises mean drivers need to adjust to the brighter sun at different times of the morning. Always keep a pair of sunglasses in your car to shield your vision. Pull over completely if the sun's glare affects your ability to safely see ahead. 3. WATCH FOR FROST.
Dipping nighttime temperatures bring frost to windshields and roads. Keep a windshield scraper and small broom in your car. Decelerate or gently brake when approaching bridges and overpasses: open surfaces are more prone to collect frost on the roadway surface. Keep alert for shaded areas that could create black ice during early morning and evening hours. 4. PLAN AHEAD FOR HARSHER WEATHER. Have your car winterized before the winter storm season sets in. Keeping your car in good condition decreases your chance of being stranded in cold weather. (And as you highmileage enthusiasts already know, it also increases the life of your vehicle.) Have your mechanic check your battery, fluids, ignition system, thermostat, lights, exhaust system, heater, and brakes. Ask him to replace your oil with a couple of fresh quarts of Castrol GTX High Mileage. In your trunk, be sure to have a first aid kit, thermal blanket, a working flashlight, a shovel and sand.
And, as always, buckle up before heading out to enjoy all the fall has to offer. Be safe!

Tips for driving smarter (NAPS)—Recently, the White House announced an increase in fuel economy standards that would require passenger vehicles and light trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. While this will go a long way to stretch fuel and our natural energy resources in the future, there are actions you can take today to help increase fuel efficiency. John and Helen Taylor, known as the world’s most fuel-efficient couple and holding 88 world records, know about stretching the boundaries of fuel efficiency. To demonstrate how you can reduce your fuel consumption and lower the price you pay at the pump, Shell and the Taylors are teaming up to introduce the Smarter Driving program by driving across 48 states, using the least amount of fuel in an unmodified, non-hybrid vehicle. As official spokespeople for Shell, the Taylors agree that by following the Shell M.A.P. to Smarter Driving, you can become more fuel-efficient and save money with this simple plan: • Maintenance: Perform smart maintenance before you drive: –Make sure your tires are not over- or under-inflated: Keeping tires at the correct pressure can improve your gasoline mileage by more than 3 percent.
The Taylors begin their Smarter Driving Journey with a full tank of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines.
can leave performance-robbing “gunk” on intake valves and fuel injectors. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines help clean up gunk so your engine can perform at its best.
– Keep your engine well tuned and repair problems immediately: Tuning up your vehicle or checking emissions could improve your gasoline mileage by 4 percent on average.
– Use a loyalty or rewards payment card to save at the pump: The Taylors suggest stretching your budget. Shell has teamed up with leading grocers in more than 110 markets across the U.S. where you can earn rewards for using your existing supermarket loyalty card and then redeeming the points at participating Shell stations.
• Actions: Practice smart actions and behaviors while you’re behind the wheel:
Another option is to use a Shell payment card that saves you money at more than 14,000 Shell stations across the U.S.
– Avoid the highs and find the lows: Speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gasoline mileage by up to 33 percent at highway speeds.
Smarter Driving can help consumers stretch their budget while helping to protect their vehicle. To test your Smarter Driving IQ and for a chance to win great prizes, visit www.Shell.us/smarterdriving or find Shell on Facebook.

Common car problems and how to fix them By Dee-Ann Durbin Associated Press
could drop, since the sensor is sending incorrect information to the car. It costs less than $200 to repair.
DETROIT — Drivers get nervous whenever the “check engine” light illuminates on their dashboard. It can signal anything from a missing $3 gas cap to repairs costing thousands of dollars.
2. Loose or missing gas cap Technicians will often tighten the gas cap for free, or replace it for a few dollars. If it’s not replaced, gas will evaporate from the car and decrease its gas mileage.
But think of the light as a way to stay on top of problems and extend the life of a car. Often, it’s warning about problems that can be avoided by keeping up with regular maintenance, says CarMD, a maker of vehicle diagnostic equipment.
3. Broken catalytic converter This one isn’t good news, since it can cost up to $2,000 to replace. The catalytic converter uses a catalyst — most often a precious metal such as platinum — to convert harmful gases left over from combustion to less harmful emissions. CarMD says catalytic converters generally won’t fail unless a related part, such as a spark plug, malfunctions, so it’s wise to keep up with the car’s maintenance schedule.
While maintenance is expensive, it’s crucial as people hang on to their cars longer. According to R.L. Polk, an automotive data firm, the average vehicle on the road is now 10.6 years old, up from 8.8 years a decade ago. Here are the five most common reasons your “check engine” light might come on, and what you can expect to pay for the repair, including labor, according to CarMD: 1. Faulty oxygen sensor The sensor measures the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and tells the car’s computer how much fuel is in the tank. If a faulty one is not repaired, the car’s gas mileage

4. Malfunctioning mass air flow sensor This sensor measures the amount of air supplied to the engine, which determines how much fuel should be delivered. When it malfunctions, it can result in a loss of power to the car, surges during acceleration and a decrease in fuel economy. It costs around $375 to fix.

5. Misfiring spark plugs Spark plugs are small but essential, since they make the car go by igniting the compressed fuel in an internal combustion engine. Misfiring spark plugs can affect engine power and fuel economy and can also damage the catalytic converter. You can replace spark plugs yourself for around $10 or pay $300 for a technician to do it.
CarMD says the total average repair cost in the U.S. is $305.56, including $202.28 for parts and $103.27 for labor. The most expensive cars to repair? Hybrids. They remain rare enough that their parts are pricier and fewer technicians are trained to fix them. The report is based on data from 170,000 vehicle repairs made between 1996 and 2010. The data came from vehicle owners and technicians who downloaded information to CarMD.
