Expansion projects undertaken to improve fairgrounds By RENEE COLEMAN Staff writer
LISBON — As the Columbiana County Fair enters its 166th year, fairgoers may notice some slight changes to the scenery. The biggest change being the expansion of the campground. The campground now stretches across Saltwell Road, to the area which has been used as free parking over the past few years. Fair board members have added a lake and laid out roads at the expansion, with future plans to take campers back to the lake. According to Tresa Hall, fair secretary, the expansion was needed as she had a waiting list for camping each year. Board members also worked on leveling a hill in the lot next to the County Municipal Court Building to increase free parking. The work on both Saltwell Road projects was done mostly through donations. Bathrooms have also been updated

with new toilets and sinks donated by American Standard. Along with the update, the grandstand bathroom was completely renovated to make stalls wider and deeper. Other changes include moving the First Aid Building onto the midway near the Rabbit Barn, updated waterlines along the midway, replacing the Coliseum sound system, re-roofing the draft horse barn and constructing a new retaining wall in front of the grandstands. New to the fair are three nights of free grandstand events, including Motocross Aug. 4; Motorcycle Dirt Drag Racing on Aug. 2, and the Truck and Tractor Pull Extravaganza on Aug. 1. Both motorcycle events begin at 8 p.m., with the pulls at 6 p.m., following opening ceremonies. Also scheduled are the fan favorites, the Combine Demolition Derby at 1 p.m. Aug. 7; Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7; the Smoker Series at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5; and the Saturday Night Pull Off at 6 p.m. Aug. 6.

Why do I use this photo in my ads? And what you should know about it... blessed to take care of people, especially people who’ve found help no-where else. Many of these people had given up hope before chiropractic. When someone comes to see me, I do an exam, and then, “adjust” their spine to help remove pressure from the nerves. Those adjustments don’t hurt, they actually feel good. And people do so much better. I have the best job in the world! And that’s how it happened! Now let me tell you about our family, I’m the guy in the middle ,on the left is my wife Beverly, she is incredibly smart, talented and beautiful, and the reason we have had such great success. Our kids, Jacob, Madison and Dylan, all get adjusted regularly and it makes a big difference in their lives. You see, unlike many of their little friends, they rarely get the “common” childhood illnesses like colds, ear infect-ions, or the flu. They are Dear friend, what I call typical “chiropractic kids.” This may seem like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference to them, “I know you.” That’s what people usually say when they and to our family! meet me in town. Then they say, “You’re Dr. Bill. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” It’s strange how life is, because now people come to Well, perhaps I should tell you a little more about that see me with their health problems and concerns. Also photo, and why I use it in my ads. Let’s start with my they come to me with their head-aches, migraines, story. chronic pain, neck pain, whiplash from car accidents, shoulder/arm pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, backaches, Years ago something happened to me that changed my ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, life forever. Let me tell you my story. athletic injuries, just to name a few. I am a senior in college and interested in sports medicine when it happens. It’s just a school assignment, but it turns out that it changes my life. You see, I’m assigned to intern for three months with an amazing doctor. I spend lots of time fol-lowing him around and learning from him, but most of all, I’m learning from the people who have come to him for help. I notice that there are a lot of incredible things going on in the office. But, that’s not all… I see kids that are very sick get well. I see people crawl in and walk out. I hear stories from patients that have suffered with all kinds of problems and started to feel better when they came to see this doctor. I realize that I am seeing miracles happen and the patients all love this doctor because he has made such a positive impact on their lives. You see, this amazing doctor is a chiropractor. This new way of looking at health fascinates me so much that I decide to go to chiropractic school myself. And you know what? I’ve never looked back; it was the best thing that I’ve ever done. Every single day I feel
Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “My daughter and I were in a car accident, we both had headaches, neck and back pain. Our family doctor recommended we see Dr. Bill. After a short course of treatment we were pain free”- ( Kathy, Hanoverton) “I suffered with neck pain and headaches, and the pain in my shoulder was so bad that it could barely be touched. Thanks to Dr. Bill, my headaches are gone and the neck and shoulder pain have greatly de-creased!” – (Cynthia, Lisbon) “I suffered a low back injury at work, Dr. Bill took care of the pain, and his staff took care of all the paperwork for me. Now I just get a check up when I need one.” – (Margie, Lisbon) You should know that I don’t heal anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
Forty-eight million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits are reduced. That’s where my chiropractic comes in. Many people find that they actually save money on their health care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic may double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other sicknesses. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. This is especially important if you are self-employed. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer - Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article, you will receive my entire new patient exam for $17. That’s with consultation, exam, any therapy….the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $150 elsewhere. But, please call right away because this offer expires on August 31, 2011, and I don’t want you to miss out. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I am a graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. I have been in practice for 12 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies, senior citizens, and even entire families. I just have that low exam fee to help more people who need care. My assistants are Beverly and Jason, and they are all really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called THE NECK AND BACK PAIN RELIEF CENTER and it is located in Lisbon at 7735 state route 45 ( in the county seat plaza ). Our phone number is 330--4203670. Call Beverly, Jason, or me today for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. - Bill Grubbs, D.C.

P.S. When accompanied by the first, I am also offering the second family member this same examination for only $10. P.P.S. Can you imagine not having to wait at a doctor’s office? Well, your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why we have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Donations of money and labor allow for completion of beef complex LISBON — In 2007 Columbiana County Fair Board members began construction on a new beef complex in response to the safety concerns regarding the original steer/sheep barn. The idea for a complex, was first brought up in 2002 and Steer Committee members raised approximately $35,000 but the project was put on hold. When fundraising resumed in 2007, the J. Herbert Thompson Family provided a significant contribution. The Thompson Family contribution allowed construction to begin and the complex was completed in
time for the 2008 Columbiana County Fair. It was dedicated on Aug. 1, 2008. The completed project cost $250,000 to complete and according to a press release the cost would have been doubled had the labor and material not been donated. The release further stated that the Columbiana County Fair Board did not contribute financially to the project as it was funded fully by donations. Now after a year of construction and multiple years of fundraising, the beef complex is paid off.

Four to enter Agriculture Hall of Fame
LISBON — Four Columbiana County men, who committed their lives to working in, promoting and advocating for the agricultural community, will be honored posthumously Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the Columbiana County Fair. The Columbiana County Agricultural Hall of Fame committee will induct Allen Dickey, of Lisbon; Don Rupert, of New Waterford; and Oland and Leland Baker, of Lisbon, into the Hall of Fame.
Special ceremonies honoring the enshrinees will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the commercial exhibit building near the secretary’s office on the fairgrounds. At that time, framed biographical sketches of each Hall of Famer will be unveiled and added to the Hall of Fame wall in the fair building. The event is open to the public, with regular fair admission. The hall of fame enshrined its first class
in 2000.
G. Allen Dickey 1930-2002 Raised on a farm and firmly rooted in agriculture, Allen Dickey used his vision and leadership to build companies that supported local farmers and diversified those companies to strengthen Columbiana County and the region as a whole. After serving in World War II, he returned and expanded the company his father started, D.W. Dickey and Son Inc., to include Hays Oil Co. and Hilltop Energy. D.W. Dickey supplied farmers with feed, fertilizer, seed and chemicals for 42 years, and Allen Dickey had the foresight
to expand and develop facilities in East Liverpool on the Ohio River to handle grain and fertilizer by barge, rail and truck. Many community and professional groups sought his business acumen and leadership, and he was a charter board member for the First National Community Bank. He also served on the board of the Ohio Ready Mix Concrete Association, the Columbiana County Board of Mental Health and Opportunity Homes, as well as numerous civic and service organizations and the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church. He gave generously to causes, both publicly and behind the scenes, including See AG HALL, Page 13

Toronto. Leland later sold the chickens and raised feeder pigs. He was a member of the Columbiana-Mahoning poultry and hog associations, and also served as an Elkrun Township trustee for 18 years. The Baker brothers were recognized in 1966 as the Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District’s Farmers of the Year for their farm stewardship and natural resources conservation. Both were active in the Lisbon Ruritan Club and in their respective churches. They were also both members of the Columbiana County Farm Bureau, where Leland served on the board. He and his wife, Ruth, were recipients of the Farm Bureau’s Distinguished Service Award.

Don farmed with his father, Willis, and brothers, Raymond and Dickey Ralph, but it was Don who started the family’s work in corn hybrids, with a small test plot in 1936 while still in college. Don was active in the Ohio Seed ImproveRupert ment Association and was granted emeritus status for his involvement. The family’s dairy was also progressive, with the first milking parlor in Ohio and, in 1977, the installation of an innovative eight-cow carousel milker, the forerunner of today’s rotary parlors. Don also continued his father’s passion for breeding and production records and became a master Jersey breeder, selling registered bulls throughout the U.S. and one to India. Don had great interest in education, served as president of the Columbiana County School Board and led efforts to consolidate the former Fairfield and New Waterford schools. Later, his organizational leadership and monetary gifts helped established the Crestview Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. He was also devoted to history and served as treasurer of the Columbiana County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. As past president of the Columbiana County Historical Association, he was instrumental in establishing and stocking the Items of Yesteryear Museum at the county fairgrounds and in creating the Columbiana County Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Motorcycle Dirt Drags return to county fair
Preparations Fairgrounds maintenance supervisor Ron Mills and workers (above) place the benches along the midway and throughout the fairgrounds in preparation for this year's fair, which runs Aug. 1-7. Along with many upgrades around the county fairgrounds, flower beds are being readied and the trees were trimmed recently. One of the most significant upgrades at the fairgrounds is the installation of new waterlines along the midway area of the fairgrounds.
