Basic offensive formation Multiple formation spread.

Offensive outlook

The Clippers averaged 35 points in their first seven games last season, but only 5.0 point in their last three. They lost all of their starters at the skilled position, but have what could be an outstanding offensive line to lead the way. “We are inexperienced at quarterback and have zero depth on the offensive line,” Spaite said.

Basic defensive formation 4-4 pressure and 4-3.

Defensive outlook

“Our strengths are attitude and tradition plus a verteran defensive line,” Spaite said. “Three starting defensive linemen return and a middle linebacker. We have very little experience at outside linebacker and in the secondary.”

Upper echelon Columbiana, Southern Local climb ranks in the Inter-Tri County League BY RON FIRTH Journal Sports Editor

COLUMBIANA — After one year in the Inter-Tri County League lower tier, the Columbiana Clippers are on the move again. Columbiana and Southern Local have jumped to the upper tier, while Mineral Ridge and Jackson-Milton drop to the lower tier. “Teams down there all play tough, but it’s good to be back in the upper tier playing some familiar faces,” Columbiana senior lineman Mike Buzzard said. Columbiana and Southern Local will join defending champion Crestview, East Palestine, Lisbon, United, South Range and Springfield Local in the ITCL upper tier, which is kicking off its eighth season. “We know some of the guys here,” Buzzard said. “All the teams give us their best shot, so we’ve got to be ready for each team. You’ve got to prepare for the next team in the way.” Players and coaches from upper tier teams like when Columbiana is in the league. “I do because it’s more of what it’s always been,” Crestview senior quarterback Collin Gilbert said. “Crestview, Columbiana — they both compete for the league championship. I like when they’re in the league.” Being in different tiers last year, the Columbiana and Crestview rivalry opened the 2012 season on a Thursday night. “Even though for us it’s a rivalry, it was kind of weird it wasn’t a league game last year,” Crestview coach Paul Cusick said. “I think it’s good for the league and is good for our rivalry. I

kind of feel like that’s where they belong and I hope they feel the same way.” Crestview had to rally for a thrilling 37-33 win in one of the top games of the season. “That was a crazy game,” Gilbert said. “The whole summer that was what we looked forward to, talking back and forth. “It’s just that backyard rival. It was a great game. The first half, their offense exploded and then the second half our defense kind of stepped it up.” The two rivals will have to wait until Oct. 25 for another matchup. “It’s great having that extra competi-

tion,” Springfield senior lineman Gabe Crowe said. “That great tradition between all of the teams in the league this year just adds to the ITCL.” Others are looking forward to league play with Columbiana. “That’s just more competition,” Lisbon senior running back Brandon Barnes said. “I like playing Columbiana. They’re a good opponent.” “Columbiana is always tough,” East Palestine senior lineman Chris Raley said. “It’s always a game we want to win. We always prepare a little more for Columbiana.” “It’s exciting,” United senior quar-

terback Garrett Beech said. “Not playing (Columbiana) last year, we’re not really sure what they’re going to have. But we’ll get film on them and see what they’ve got.” Southern Local has had past experience with the other teams while in the old Tri-County League, which merged with the Inter-County League to form the ITCL. “They’ve had some success the last few years and have had some tough running backs,” Crowe said. “I know people who have gone against them. They’ve said they’re a pretty tough team. So I’m excited to have that competition.” Southern Local played East Palestine, Lisbon and Crestview last year, while also meeting Columbiana in league play. “It’s going to be different not playing them to open the season,” Raley said. “We played them last year and that was a hyped up game,” Gilbert said. “We played really well that game (which Crestview won 63-14).” Southern Local joins East Palestine as the only league members with artificial turf fields. Columbiana, East Palestine, South Range and Springfield will play league games on Southern’s new field this season. “Last year they played us tough,” Buzzard said. “It was a great game (that Columbiana won 26-14). I’m just looking forward to playing them in the upper tier now.”

Offensive outlook

Quarterback Collin Gilbert is the only returning starter in the backfield, but the Rebels bring back everyone from their talented offensive line. “We return all of our offensive linemen and quarterback, but graduated both receivers and both running backs,” Cusick said. “We have players that have game experience at those positions, but not starting experience. If we can mature at those positions, we’ll have a chance to be competitive on the offensive side of the ball. Our linemen and quarterback must be the leaders on offense and allow those inexperienced players to mature.” See CRESTVIEW, Page 10A

Rebels have tough act to follow BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer

COLUMBIANA—In the 2012 season opener, the Crestview Rebels edged Columbiana 36-33 in a tense, back-and-forth game that was not decided until the final minutes. Little did the Crestview starters know at the time, but they would not play in another fourth quarter until their opening round playoff game in November. In the weeks following the opener, the Rebels took their already prolific offense to a new level, piling up one blowout win after another. By the time the dust settled at the end of the season, Crestview had amassed an area-record 628 points (52.3 per game) on their way to the first undefeated regular season in school history. The closest conference game was a 57-14 win over South Range. “It was really cool once we got into a

rhythm on offense last year,” senior quarterback Collin Gilbert said. “Seeing the defense out of breath and scrambling to get set was a lot of fun.” “A lot of things came together that allowed us to have the kind of offensive season we did,” coach Paul Cusick said. “Going into the season we thought we would be decent and make some big plays but we didn’t expect anything like what ended up happening.”

Come to the Country

The Rebels scored at least 57 straight points in eight straight games on the way to a school-best 11-1 record. As they prepared for 2012, the Rebels returned two key running backs

Basic defensive formation 4-4.

Defensive outlook

Overshadowed by the team’s recordbreaking offense is the Rebels’ defense that held opponents to an area-best 12.1 points a game in the regular season last year. “We return only four starters on the defensive side of the ball,” Cusick said. “We will be relatively inexperienced, but we do have guys that contributed last season. Our strength should be our overall defensive team speed and athletic abiliy, but we will be young. We need to replace three starters on the defensive line, three at the linebacker position, and we will have two new starters in the secondary. Our defense will need to mature in a hurry to be competitive throughout the season.”

the vast majority of an offensive line that helped pave the way to a regional final berth in 2011. Cusick felt that the team’s success would hinge on how quickly that new line would gel. “The line was the biggest key to the whole season,” Cusick said. “We had a lot of young guys on the offensive line, but they didn’t take long to mature and did a great job of grasping our audible system very quickly. Getting our line set was what really allowed us to get on a roll.” Gilbert also proved to be a worthy signal-caller, running and passing for over 1,000 yards and accounting for 31 touchdowns. “I had a good season, but there’s no way we would have been able to move the ball if the line didn’t step up like they did,” he said. “You can have the best running backs in the league but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have good blocking.” 2012 represented the culmination of an offensive philosophy that Cusick and his staff have spent the last several years ingraining into the program. The idea being to wear down the other team and take them out of their comfort zone, creating big-play opportunities. “We run the same type of offense all the way down to the middle school level,” Cusick said. “It’s very important for us to instill the basics of the system into the kids at a young age so that by the time they reach high school that stuff is second nature to them and we can then move forward and make things more sophisti-

other hand I think it really helped our program out for this year because a lot of younger players got experience.” The Rebels averaged 9.1 yards per rush on the season along with 463 total yards per game. This season, the Rebels face the opposite problem of last year. Gilbert and the entire offensive line return, but the Rebels must find a way to replace Blower and Hardenbrook as well as receiver Kris Simpson and tight end Dimitri Gregory, all of whom accounted for over 3,000 yards of offense and 47 touchdowns. “We have a lot of yards to replace this year, but having an experienced quarterback and our entire line back is huge and hopefully will help the rest of the offense settle in,” Cusick said. “We have a lot of players that have been hungry for their opportunity and are now ready to take advantage.”

The Rebels were often so far ahead of their opponents by halftime, that the starters spent most of the second half resting comfortably on the bench, their work for the night finished. While that’s a problem every team would gladly take, some of Crestview’s players admitted feeling restless as the season went on. “Sure, I would have loved to play more last year,” said senior Josh McDade, who is moving from tackle to tight end this season. “Second halves were really boring at times, but on the

“East Palestine has a lot of community pride in their football team. I see it living here and I remember it when I played here. This year is hopefully the first step to restoring that kind of excitement.” TONY FOSTER, FIRST-YEAR EAST PALESTINE COACH

East Palestine coach returns home BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer

EAST PALESTINE—Unlike some assistant coaches, Tony Foster never felt the urge to one day run his own program. However, an opening at his alma mater proved too much to resist. Foster, a 1994 graduate of East Palestine High School, succeeded Gare Mattes as the Bulldogs’ next football coach in February. For the past three years he coached alongside Dan Yeagley as a varsity assistant at South Range, where he also ran the freshman team. It was a comfortable situation. The program was stable. Foster enjoyed the players, and he also taught social studies at the school—a position he still holds. Had any other coaching vacancies popped up, he he would have been content to remain at South Range for the foreseeable future. “East Palestine was the only head coaching position I would have considered,” Foster said. “I loved coaching at South Range with Dan Yeagley and the entire staff there. It was a terrific job. But I thought the chance to come back home and turn the program around seemed pretty special.” East Palestine has had one winning season in the last 10 years and had only 28 players on its varsity roster last season. Foster hopes to one day turn the Bulldogs into a consistent winner, but took the job realizing he was beginning at square one. While at South Range, one of his jobs was to build program participation, something he made his first priority over the winter. In order to drum up interest, Foster showed up at East Palestine during the lunch hour and went table-to-table, talking with students and telling them what he had planned for the football team. “Right away, what I wanted to do was just get kids into the weight room

Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer

First-year East Palestine head coach Tony Foster talks with players Luke Cope (right) and Michael Loyd as the Bulldogs prepare for the 2013 season.

and get them started on a lifting program,” Foster said. “When I got here we had some good athletes in other sports who weren’t going out for the

football team. I’m hoping that our weight program can show them the benefits lifting can have for their sport and convince them to stay with the

football team.” So far, Foster’s efforts to beef up the numbers have proven successful. The Bulldogs currently have 54 players on the roster, nearly double their total from 2012. Upon taking the job, Foster said his goal was to get to 50 players, a number he believes a team needs to be consistently good. “A lot of the increase can be credited to a big freshman class,” Foster said. “Overall I think we set a good foundation over the winter in the weight room.” Once fall practice rolled around, Foster again tried to keep his focus on small incremental steps. He has spent much of the time making sure the team becomes more solid in blocking and tacking, which Foster believes will instantly make the Bulldogs more competitive. A new spread offense is also being installed, which Foster hopes will give the team’s athletes a better chance to use their skill and make big plays. “Above everything else, the biggest thing I’m trying to emphasize is to get our players to play through the whistle on every snap,” Foster said. “Everything else will eventually fall into place, but if we consistently play fast and through the whistle we have a chance to compete.” Still, Foster knows that the program will not be transformed overnight. Progress has been slow at times during practice, and success may not be immediately reflected in the team’s overall record. The goal for this season is to show gradual improvement. “We’re slowly getting better. I think we are on the right track,” Foster said. “East Palestine has a lot of community pride in their football team. I see it living here and I remember it when I played here. This year is hopefully the first step to restoring that kind of excitement.”

“We lost a lot of close games and we need to not leave any wins on the field this year to be successful.”

Foster takes over and East Palestine program that has one winning season in 10 years, but the numbers are up along with the anticipation of a new season. “From the point I took over until now, I’ve seen a genuine desire and want to win from these guys,” Foster said. “They want to improve and get better. They’ve all done absolutely everythings we’ve asked of them.” The Bulldogs will open the season at ITCL lower tier power McDonald on Aug. 30. “The league across the board is up this year, I think,” Foster said. “Nobody is a clear-cut favorite. Obviously, Crestview is the team to beat until somebody knocks them off. But, South Range, Springfield and United all have very good teams coming back. I think this is a good year for the upper tier across the board.”

two seasons, five have been by seven points or less. “We lost a lot of close games and we need to not leave any wins on the field this year to be successful,” Altomare said. “Being a small school, we also lack depth and need to stay healthy in order to compete.” The Bears roster includes 10 seniors, eight juniors and nine sophomores. “Our players are very hard working with a desire to win, so it makes it easy to coach,” Altomare said. “We have a good mix of returning linemen and skill players.” The opening two games against Lisbon and Columbiana will tell a lot about the Bears. “Our goals remain the same,” Altomare said. “We aim to win the ITCL lower tier and advance into the playoffs. Another goal of ours is to win our rivalry games (Lisbon and Columbiana). This year the ITCL lower tier has a different look with Mineral Ridge moving down and Jackson-Milton rejoining the conference. “Our tier of the ITCL should be very competitive this year.” Altomare said. “Western Reserve returns some key players and are defending champs. Wellsville, McDonald, and Mineral Ridge all return a lot of players. Lowellville came on strong at the end and should also contend.” I look for the league to be very competitive and balanced this year.”

2013 Outlook

If the Blue Devils want to turn the corner, they need to sustain some success. They won two game last season, giving them four wins over the last 57 games. “We must stay healthy,” Tsilimos said. “We’re hoping to change the culture of losing the last six years. We must be more physical on defense and not give up as many points this year.” The Blue Devils will open the season against Leetonia and Mineral Ridge at home, where they have lost 13 of their last 14 games. Then they will visit Wellsville, one of the top teams in the lower tier.

“For us, we need early success,” Tsilimos said. “You can’t win the upper tier in the first three weeks, but you can lose it. Those games may not count in the standings, but you need some success early to carry over going into league play.” There are 17 returning lettermen, giving the Blue Devils somewhere to start building. “On offense, we want to get better at throwing the ball,” Tsilimos said. “Defensively, we have to be able to get a stop when we need it. We’ve got to keep games close.” The Blue Devils gave up an average of 36.7 points in the seven ITCL games last season. “Crestview is the champ until someone beats them,” Tsilimos said. “Springfield and United will challenge Crestview. South Range is always good.”

Springer is hoping another year of experience for his skill players yields better results. “Improved execution will be the key for us this year,” Springer said. “Last year, I think our youth caused us to be overmatched a lot of the time, but our players have now become more familiar with our system and we also spent the winter getting stronger. Our improved strength up front should be a big difference this year.”

We have also done a much better job so far in practice of playing solid assignmentbased football. Last year we were out of position a lot, which led to a lot of missed tackles. prised of upperclassmen, and Springer sees ample opportunity for improvement from this year’s squad. “A lot of our players have now been in the system for two years or more and we had our best winter in the weight room since I’ve been here.” Springer said. “I was very encouraged by our scrimmage against Malvern. hey are a strong program, but we competed physically with them. Last year we would’ve been pushed off the field.” The Trojans were outscored by nearly 40 points in seven ITCL lower tier games last season. “It should be a competitive year in the league,” Springer said. “Western Reserve, Wellsville, and McDonald are all loaded. We are still trying to establish our identity. I’m not sure how many wins we’ll have, but I know we will come to compete every Friday.” “GO TROJANS!”

when the closest game was a 57-14 decision against South Range. It may be a little closer this season as United, Springfield and South Range are hoping to challenge the defending league champions. “The Inter-Tri County League is a great showcase for small-school football in our area,” Cusick said. “From top to bottom, the ITCL looks to be tremendously competitive. There will be no easy wins in this league. “South Range is back where they belong. Columbiana and United will be athletic and physical with great skill players. They will be extremely competitive. Springfield had a great run last season and will be very confident and will return a great group of of young players. “Lisbon will have some good young athletes and may be the most improved team in the league. East Palestine will be much improved and returns key players. Southern has historically been a very scrappy team and has had some key wins over the last few years. The top three teams in our tier are South Range, Springfield and United.”

Offensive outlook

The Indians lost record-setting quarterback Luke Griffith and receiver J.J. Napierkowski to graduation, but return big-play makers Mike McKenzie and Jared Shilot along with five other starters. “We’re looking for improved execution this season,” Skrinjar said. “We want to have better communication on the offensive line. We’re going to play a more aggressive, smash-mouth style of football.”

Defensive outlook

Southern Local gave up an average of 39.5 points per game in their four losses last season. “We need to have improved team defense,” Skrinjar said. “We need to all be working together and rally to the football. We want to remain aggressive but be fundamentally sound at the same time. And we didn’t tackle as well as we should’ve last season.”

It’s our shot to make noise in the upper tier because we don’t know if we’ll be going back down next season.” Even though the Indians lost some talented players to graduation, they return seven starters on offense and six starters on defense. “Without a doubt, senior leadership is our greatest strength,” Skrinjar said. “It’s how they conduct themselves. Road games against two of the top teams in the ITCL lower tier — Wellsville and Mineral Ridge — in the second and third weeks will be a telling tale on what lies ahead for the Indians entering the upper tier schedule. “Our schedule will set us up and prepare us well for what we hope is a playoff run,” Skrinjar said. “We’ll facing some teams we haven’t played in a

The Golden Eagles have been been building for this season. “We return 20 lettermen and 11 starters on both offense and defense,” Ward said. “When we picked up camp in practice, it was almost like we never left with all those guys.” Only six seniors were lost to graduation. “We expect to compete in every

game,” Ward said. “Our morale, attitude and effort will be a huge indicator of our success this season.” Other indicators will be how improved the Eagles are defensively and how they fare against teams with winning records. Last season, all six wins came against teams with losing records and all four losses were against

Offensive outlook

Wellsville has plenty of big-play ability, but was inconsistent last season — scoring an average of 39.8 points in their four wins and only 9.2 points in their six losses. “I think we’ll be pretty balanced,” Wright said. “We’ve got great wide receivers and running backs and we’re

pretty darn good up front. The offense could be pretty special. There’s a great deal of experience there and this could be the most balanced offense I’ve been a part of in my career. We’ve got to eliminate penalties and it may take a little time to learn the new system. It’s kind of like learning a new language, but they seem to be coming along.”

Wellsville has been looking forward to this season for a while with a talented class of 13 seniors. “We’re a senior-laden team and sticking together will be key to our success,” Wright said. “We’ll need it when adversity hits and it always does over a season.” The Tigers lost only four players to graduation and return all of their skilled starters. They are confident under Wright, who takes over after guiding Beaver Local to six playoff appearances. “These kids deserve to win and they’re definitely capable,” Wright said. “They just have to play up to their ability. Tigers head in Wright direction BY PAUL EDGAR Staff Writer

WELLSVILLE — When Rich Wright was hired as the new Wellsville football coach in January, some people told him to lower his expectations. Some said the kids from that community would be different from those he coached for 14 seasons at Beaver Local. That they wouldn’t have a great attitude, wouldn’t work as hard and that he was in for a real shock. Wright says he found nothing could be further from the truth. “I would say the biggest surprise was that some people said the Wellsville kids would be different, be lazy,” he said. “I haven’t seen that at all. The kids are awesome. They’ve worked so hard. They’re respectful. They’ve been prepared for success and have a great deal of pride. They want to do well and I’ve been impressed with them since day one.” As soon as Wright was hired, he began the process of getting to know his players better. He was a regular at the Tigers’ basketball games and wrestling matches this past winter and could be found watching the track and baseball teams in the spring. Wright said developing a relationship with his new team was his first priority. “I’ve tried to talk with them and find out about them,” he said. “That’s been one of the fun parts. These kids have

charisma. It’s pretty cool that everyone lives so close together. Some of them walk to practice. Kids are kids and I think they’ve accepted me just fine.” The process of getting acclimated with his players hasn’t been as easy as it has in the past for Wright. At Beaver Local, Wright knew almost every family and saw his players on a daily basis at school. Now, he has to put in extra time to make sure he

stays up on what is happening with his team. “The hardest part is not seeing them in school,” he said. “When you’re in the school, you know everything that’s going on in the classroom. You know any time they have to visit the principal or when they’re absent or come in late. You can talk to them face to face and see what’s going on.” Without being able to see them at school, Wright has leaned on the principal, athletic director and teachers to keep him informed about his players. But Wright isn’t the only one trying to soak up new information. His team is also adjusting to a new coach and a new system. “The hard part is that I’ve got an experienced football team, but they have to learn everything from the beginning,” he said. “Every drill, every play has to be taught from the ground up. It’s a new way of doing things for them and “GOOD LUCK, TIGERS”

change is always hard.” Another challenge for Wright has been to increase the number of students playing football. Last season, the Tigers struggled with participation levels and suited up just 24 players for most of their games. Wright said the school’s size has made increasing their numbers difficult. “It’s been a couple steps forward at times, a couple steps back,” he said. “We only have 90-plus boys in the school. I’ve heard if you get 12 percent of your boys playing, that’s good. Well, 12 percent for us would hardly be half a team. “We’ll definitely have enough to play on Friday and Saturday and that will help. My main concern is that whatever number we start with, that’s what we need to finish with.” Expectations are high in Wellsville with a talented senior class looking to leave its mark. Wright said he understands that only success will bring everyone on board with his plan. “There’s still people in the community that don’t know me,” he said. “I’ve got to prove something to them. This is a very proud community. Everyone has been very nice, very cordial and supportive, but I’ve got to do some positive things on and off the field for everyone to buy in.” Wright signed a three-year contract when he took the job. He said that shows the level of commitment on both sides to see his plan through to the end. “If Wellsville got every athlete in town to play football, they’d probably kick us out of the league,” he said. “There are athletes all over this town. It’s very talent rich for such a small town. I’ve got kids and you never know what the future may bring, but as long as Wellsville wants me, this could be a good place for me. Who knows, maybe I’ll be here for the next 20 years.”

Scary scene at Southern Local Hit-and-run incident showed need for more parking at football games BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer

SALINEVILLE—On Oct. 7, 2011, Southern Local hosted Western Reserve in one of the most-anticipated football games in recent school history. It was homecoming and both teams were undefeated. The winner would likely be the Inter-Tri County League Lower Tier champion. “A bunch of things combined to make that night a really big event,” Southern athletic director Jess Krulik said. “I’ve never seen so many cars for a football game since I’ve been at the school.” The parking lots at Southern Local High School quickly overflowed, with many of the excess vehicles pulling into a private field across the street. Among those parked there was Western Reserve High School graduate and Youngstown State freshman Tori Korda. During the second half, with Western Reserve comfortably ahead, Korda and two of her friends decided to leave. After crossing Route 39, they began walking parallel to the road, about three feet into the grass. As the group continued to their parking spot, a 2011 Ford F-150 came up behind them and swerved to the right, clipping one of Korda’s friends with the passenger side mirror—knocking it off in the process—and striking Korda below her left shoulder. “We were just walking down the side of the road and the next thing I remember there were people standing over me, talking to me, trying to calm me down,” Korda said.

“I’m not sure if the driver knew they had hit somebody, but everybody around me said it sure looked like they sped away intentionally.” TORI KORDA, HIT-AND-RUN VICTIM

The driver did not stop. In fact, those in the vicinity told Korda that the truck actually increased its speed as it drove away. “I’m not sure if the driver knew they had hit somebody, but everybody around me said it sure looked like they sped away intentionally,” Korda said. Korda was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman with a broken bone between her shoulder and elbow. She was released the following day and her left arm was in a cast for a little more than two months. A bulletin was soon put out asking people to be on the lookout for a light gray or white 2011 Ford F-150 missing a passenger side window. No new information ever surfaced and the case was closed after a year.

“They were able to identify the vehicle through pieces of the mirror, and after that I thought there was a chance to find somebody,” Korda said. “But, at the same time, I’m not really surprised nobody was caught once the driver sped away. My friend’s parents tried to run it down, but they weren’t able to get a good view.” According to Krulik, school officials agreed immediately to discourage any further parking in the field. “Members of our booster club help park cars, and after the accident we made sure the area across the street was monitored and that cars were directed elsewhere,” Krulik said. “Everybody has been pretty accepting of that and we haven’t had any real problems since.” Members of the Southern community

hope that a more permanent solution has now arrived. As part of an overall facility upgrade, parking around the football field has been expanded by about 100 spaces for the upcoming season. Two new parking areas have been added, one by the school’s administrative offices and another by the concession stand. To handle any potential overflow, a new access road has been created leading to the practice football field in back of the stadium. Superintendent John Wilson, who was not with Southern at the time, acknowledged the accident came up during discussions about stadium upgrades, but did not say it was the overriding reason for more parking. “There were a number of factors that went into the need to improve our facility, and the accident was certainly a part of it,” Wilson said. “We knew we needed to get more parking not just for football but for all of our other events as well.” According to Krulik, the issue predated Korda’s accident and affected the school in other ways besides safety. “Parking has been a problem for awhile,” Krulik said. “Besides the issue of people having to park in a private field, the lack of space was really hurting our attendance compared to the other ITCL schools. “We now think we have enough space to accommodate everybody and more than enough overflow room by the practice field so that nobody should have to park across the street.”

Southern will debut turf field BY PAUL EDGAR Staff Writer

SALINEVILLE — Each time a member of this year’s senior class steps onto the new artificial turf field at Southern Local, they still can’t believe it’s happened. What was once a dream, has now become reality. As freshmen, they were introduced to a new coach in Mike Skrinjar. Together they set out to achieve a list of goals they believed would take the football program to the next level. Included in that list was an upgrade to the school’s football stadium and surrounding facilities. A new synthetic turf field has now been installed along with improvements to both the visitor and home bleachers, a new field house and additional parking. “It still doesn’t even seem real,” Southern Local senior lineman Caleb Gotschall said. “We always talked about how cool it would be to have this, but I never thought it would happen while I was still here.” Skrinjar — who has led the Indians to a 23-8 record during the past three seasons — said the new upgrades have been something he has envisioned since he took over the program. “Four years ago, I sat down with this group of players when they were just freshmen and talked about building what I called an ‘Indian Empire,’” he said. “We dreamed about having a field like this. It took a lot of people to see this thing through including the players. See TURF, Page 47A

2013 Outlook

The Raiders, who feature 15 seniors, return a lot of players who saw action last season due to injuries. “Throughout the 2012 season, we played a lot of different players,” Yeagley said. “Many of our players had

a chance to start at least one game during the season because of injuries and trying to find the right combination. “Even though we played a lot of different of players, the Raiders still have to mature quickly because of a very tough non-league schedule and a very tough league. The Raiders have worked very hard in the offseason and during conditioning. The seniors have also shown great leadership. The Raiders, however, must still learn from the previous teams and play together.” South Range suffered its only loss in the Inter-Tri County League upper tier to Crestview last season and will try to catch the Rebels again this year. “The league is loaded,” Yeagley said. “Anything can happen in the league. “Crestview being Crestview. United is loaded and has everybody back and Springfield has everybody back. It is going to be tough, really tough. We’ve got to stay healthy.”

2013 Outlook

Coming off their second losing season in 17 years, the Tigers expect to turn things around in a hurry. “Our players are excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming season,” Guerriero said. “With a number of returning on both sides of the ball, we are looking to build off their experiences from last season.” The Tigers return 17 lettermen and all of their skilled players will be back in the starting lineup. “We want to compete for the ITCL title and return to the playoffs,” Guerriero said. Springfield hopes to close the gap on five-time defending league champion Crestview. “Crestview has been dominate for so many years, you have to put them on top,” Guerriero said. “Columbiana moving up will be a good rivalry game for us. The league has been so competitive, you can’t take any week off.”

this, the expectations rise and so does the pressure. “But, if we do what we need to do, we’ll be hosting a playoff game. On paper, we can do it, but we all know the game isn’t played on paper. Going 10-0 is our number one goal. It’s time to get to work.” Wellsville will be among the teams in the running for the ITCL lower tier. “The lower tier is as competitive as you can get,” Wright said. “Most of the teams have a lot of seniors coming back. I think the league is in an up year. But, this league is fair. We all deal with small numbers. I’m excited to be a part of this league and I truly believe four teams from the lower tier will make the playoffs — two in Division VI and two in Division VII.” The key to the Tigers’ season will be at the end of the regular season when they play Mineral Ridge, McDonald and Western Reserve.

Congratulations to the

TURF, Continued from Page 45A

These guys believed in each other and they were able to get people excited about Southern Local football again.” The money for the project — costing slightly more than $1 million— came from moving inside mills (guaranteed money from the state) from the current expense fund to the permanent improvement fund. The millage move was approved at a March 6 board meeting and resulted in an unvoted tax increase. “You are never going to please everybody,” Southern Local Superintendent John Wilson said. “Some folks don’t believe that we need the stadium improvements or don’t like how the money was raised, but a lot of people are also pretty excited about it.” There’s no doubt the players are excited about it. According to Southern Local senior quarterback Jared Shilot, the new field

is a source of pride for the team. “The whole things is just breathtaking,” he said. “It’s an honor to be a part of the senior class that opens this place up. “We always said we’d have a turf field one day, but we didn’t think it would be in our generation. For us, it’s a symbol of all the hard work the former and current players have put in.” Southern Local senior wide receiver M.J. Williams said being able to use the updated facilities has humbled him and made him appreciate all the hard work that went into making it happen. “Coming out here everyday, it’s mind-blowing,” he said. “This group of seniors is an amazing bunch. “We’ve treated every practice like it was a game since we were freshmen. We’ve talked about having something like this to play on since then. We just never thought it would really happen.”
