League champs collide in early showdown BY RON FIRTH Journal Sports Editor
Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer
West Branch’s Logan Sharp (left) and Crestview’s Collin Gilbert will meet again when their teams play each other for the first time on Sept. 6.
COLUMBIANA — One of the most interesting matchups of the season comes early on when a pair of league champions meet for the first time. Inter-Tri County League upper tier champion Crestview travels to Northeastern Buckeye Conference champion West Branch on Sept. 6. “That will be interesting,” West Branch coach D.J. Dota said. “You know of them because they’ve won a lot of games and league titles. “They have a great football program over there and have done a lot.” Both programs have winning traditions, but not anything to connect them — until now. “I’ve never watched them,” West
Branch senior lineman Logan Sharp said. “I’ve never played them. It’s going to be a new experience.” Sharp is one of the top returnees to a West Branch team that went 6-4 last season and captured its first NBC title in 11 years Crestview, which has won 19 straight regular-season games and returns its entire offensive line, doesn’t know much about the Warriors either. “Not a lot,” Crestview senior quarterback Collin Gilbert said. “I know Coach (Paul Cusick) went and saw them scrimmage. They’re a good team. They’re big. They’re a division bigger than us this year, but Coach did a great job of getting them and Liberty on our schedule. That gets us prepared for week 11 See SHOWDOWN, Page 3B

in the playoffs —for the St. Thomas’ and Kirtland’s — because those teams can compare to them.” Both teams played Kirtland the past two seasons. Last year, Kirtland beat West Branch in the season opener, 39-7, while Crestview lost to Kirtland, 28-14, in the second round of the Division V playoffs. The Crestview-West Branch game should certainly have a playoff atmosphere. “It’s just another game we have to prepare for and we have to bring our A game,” Dota said. “We were open and they were open. They contacted us. We want to play good programs. “Last year, by playing New Philadelphia and Kirkland, and Streetsborgo was a playoff team, it helped us later on in the league — playing in the big football game and how to prepare for it.”

Crestview, East Palestine, United stay put in new divisional alignment BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer
In June, the Ohio High School Athletic Association officially announced that it was expanding to seven divisions in football, a move that sent all but three area teams down a division for the upcoming season. Crestview, East Palestine and United will remain in Division V while the rest of the Inter-Tri County League upper tier drops to Division VI. In the lower tier, Jackson-Milton and McDonald will remain in Division VI, while everyone else will compete in Division VII. For the three teams remaining in Division V, the change provides a couple of challenges. First among them is that fact that Crestview, East Palestine, and United will now play the vast majority of their conference schedules against teams that are a division lower. That makes it harder to accumulate computer points, as wins are weighted based on the size of a school’s opponents. First-year East Palestine coach Tony Foster said that his school—whose nonconference schedule this year includes Division VI McDonald and Division VII Mathews—will have to consider scheduling bigger schools in the future to compensate. “Ultimately, our goal is to eventually See ALIGNMENT, Page 24B

The offensive line — led by returning starters Stefan Lucas, Cody Martsolf, Jason Sims and Austin Lawrence – will be the team strength. No skilled players return for the Beavers, who scored one of fewer touchdowns in four of 10 games last season as they averaged 13.7 points a game. “Instead of a few established players, we’ll have younger guys in there that need to step up,” McElroy said. “We have a lot of returners along the line of scrimmage. We will have to utilize experience on the offensive line to develop young skill players.”
Basic defensive formation Multiple fronts.
Defensive outlook
The Beavers gave up 36.2 points per game in their eight losses last season, but only a total of 14 points in their two wins. Beaver Local is experienced up front and will try to stop the run first, but has virtually no varsity experience returning in the secondary. “We are going to utilize the experience of the front seven to help develop the defensive secondary,” McElroy said.

2013 Outlook
Beaver Local’s five-year run in the All-American Conference is over after a 1-21 league mark. Now the Beavers are off on their own as an independent. The season opener will be a tough one as the Beavers travel to area power Crestview. Then the Beavers will play
six of their last nine games at home. The Beavers won’t have far to go for most of their remaining away games — at East Palestine, Struthers and Cambridge. “It’s going to be nice to be at home six times,” McElroy said. “We’ve got a local variety the first three games, which is nice, but we still play three good AAC teams (Niles, Struthers, Poland).” Beaver Local returns 19 letterwinners, but no skilled players in the starting lineup. “The Beavers look to build off improvements made last season,” McElroy said. “The team looks to use experienced linemen to help develop young offensive/defensive skill players.”

Returning lettermen
Twenty-four, including nine starters on offense and nine starters on defense.
Basic offensive formation Multiple I.
Offensive outlook
The Potters return nine starters, including leading passer (Kade Reynolds) and receiver (Zack English). The Potters averaged 45.3 points in
their four wins last year, but only 11.3 in their six losses. They are seeking more consistency moving the ball and will look to get that with an experienced offensive, which returns seven players who started at least two games last year. “Having that many guys with game experience will be a big difference for us,” Prescott said. “They’re going to play with a lot more confidence and aggressiveness. You always hope to win the game up front. We’re not all that big, but we’ve got some tough guys.”
Basic defensive formation 4-4.

Skinner fitted for blue and white EAST LIVERPOOL — Dave Skinner will view the game of football from a different perspective this season. After roaming the sidelines at Nicholson Stadium as the head coach at Wellsville the past six years, Skinner will man the press box at Patterson Field. Skinner joined Rick Prescott’s East Liverpool coaching staff in the offseason after Rich Wright was hired to lead Wellsville. The 50-year-old Skinner will serve as an assistant under Prescott with a focus on linebackers and offensive linemen. “Staff-wise, I think I fit in great,” Skinner said. “And kids are kids. I’ve always been able to get along anywhere I’ve been. This is a good bunch.” A 1981 graduate of Southern Local, Skinner was a defensive coordinator at Southern Local, East Palestine, Campbell Memorial and Wellsville before taking over as the Tigers’ head coach in 2007. In six seasons at the helm, Skinner guided Wellsville to a 32-29 record including the playoffs in 2011, the first in a decade for the Tigers. Prior to Skinner’s tenure, Wellsville suffered through five straight losing seasons (17-33). According to Prescott, Skinner’s arrival in East Liverpool couldn’t have come at a better time. “Coach Skinner has definitely been a great addition to our staff,” he said. “He fits in well with the rest of the coaches. He is very committed, knowledgeable, and knows how to get the kids fired up.” After handling all of the extra duties that come with a head coaching position, Skinner says he has found the role of an assistant to be much more relaxing. “Actually, going from a head coach to an assistant has been a lot of fun,” he said. “You don’t have to put up with as
much stuff. Now, I can just coach. I don’t have to worry about all the little details. It’s been kind of refreshing.” While Skinner’s responsibilities may have changed, his personality has not. Skinner said he will maintain his fiery approach to the game. “I haven’t changed one bit,” he said. “I’m still very intense when it comes to the game. I think the guys notice that. They’ve been talking about my eyes. They say I don’t blink. I just told them, that I don’t want them to blink either. If they’re staring down a quarterback, don’t blink.” On Friday nights, Skinner will be found in the Patterson Field press box. He said he will be communicating with East Liverpool defensive coordinator Josh Ludwig during games. “I’ll be his eyes in the box on game nights,” Skinner said. “I’ll help him make adjustments on the go. I’ve been in the box a few times in my career. There’s so many more things you can see up there than you can on the sidelines. You really get the whole picture.” While Skinner won’t be able to attend any Wellsville games this season, he said he will be keeping his eye on how his former team is faring. “When I get done at practice and stop in downtown Wellsville, I get some different looks,” he said. “But, I didn’t choose to leave Wellsville. It is what it is. I’ll still be watching what they do. Those are still my kids. I coached them for a long time. I wish them well all the time and I’ll be rooting for them.” As for the future, Skinner said he would like to be a head coach again, but for now his position with the Potters is right where he wants to be. “I’m just focusing on this season and helping the Potters get prepared,” he said. “I’m enjoying myself. I get along with everyone and I’m having a good time. As for being a head coach again someday, I’ll cross that bridge when and if it comes.”

2013 Outlook
The Potters are hoping to pick up where they left off last season when they won their last three games. The team will be built around the 17 seniors. “Our team strength is senior leadership,” Prescott said. “They are a takecharge group. I was always told that if
you’re not sure what to do on the field, look to the guys who’ve been there. These are our guys. They’ve been through adversity the ups and downs. They’re going to set the tone for us this season.” The teams on East Liverpool’s schedule, which includes four new opponents, combined for a 41-60 record last year. The Potters open the season at Carrollton and will host the next four games. The schedule includes games against Salem, Oak Glen, Beaver Local and Wheeling Park. “I’m very happy to be playing more local again,” Prescott said. “Being independent is a good thing in that you can change your schedule up. Sometimes, like last year, you’re forced into playing a Cleveland or Toledo team. This schedule has eight teams we’d like to keep on the schedule long term. It’s not an easier schedule by any means, but it’s one I like a whole lot better.”

Minerva’s Hall hits ground running BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer
MINERVA— For the past few seasons, while serving as an assistant at Massillon Perry, Mike Hall felt the urge to be a head coach again. It was just a matter of finding the right opportunity. When a vacancy at Minerva High School came up in January, Hall had exactly the situation he wanted. “I was looking to coach at a smaller school that was close to Massillon, so I wouldn’t have to uproot my family,” Hall said. “Everything about Minerva fit very well for me. The community support here is terrific and the administration has been totally behind what we’re trying to do.” Hall took over in February after spending eight years at Massillon Perry as an offensive coordinator. Prior to that he was at Wickliffe High from 19922003, spending the last five years as head coach and leading the Blue Devils to three consecutive playoff appearances and one regional final. Hall was also spent 2004 on the staff at Howland. “I had some wonderful times coach at a small school like Wickliffe (Division IV),” Hall said. “Then with Perry I had a taste of coaching at a Division I school. I enjoyed my time at Perry but I wanted to bet back into coaching at a smaller school. For me, the small school football experience is a little more pure. I like the close relationship with the community.” Hall arrived at Minerva armed with a list of changes he wanted to imple-

ment and wasted little time in getting down to business. First he needed to make the Lions more physical across the board. Prior to Hall’s arrival, Minerva had been running a spread attack, but in order to install his beloved Wing-T—an offense that features power running—Hall needed his team to bulk up. Every day during February and March, Hall commuted from his teaching job at Massillon Perry to Minerva so he could be at the weight room in time for the players arrival. During those winter sessions Hall drilled the Lions on the skills required for his offense and defense and also worked to cultivate the culture he wanted in the program. “During the winter is when your team chemistry is built and the coaching staff

and players worked very hard,” Hall said. “There were some new things I wanted to do with the program and the players have really bought into our philosophy of unselfishness and accountability. There was a great energy to our workouts.” By the time summer practice rolled around Hall had established the attitude he wanted in the program and set to work teaching the players the finer aspects of the Wing-T. He first encountered the offense when he joined the staff at Wickliffe and quickly fell in love with it, using it as head coach at “GO MINERVA LIONS!”

Wickliffe and at times while he was at Perry. “I consider the Wing-T to be a very pure form of offense,” Hall said. “It slows up the defense because they have to account for four different ballcarriers and it also provides the offense a lot of varied options on how to attack.” Hall will need the Lions running on all cylinders by the time the season starts because he expects it to be a very competitive year in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference. “The NBC should be tough like it always seems to be,” Hall said. “To be successful we need to show up ready to compete every night. So far our practices haven’t been perfect but we are starting to run the offense a little faster which is a good sign.” Hall believes that his years spend coaching at Massillon Perry in the rugged Federal League—which featured Division I powers Canton McKinley and Canton GlenOak— prepared him well for the job at Minerva. “The NBC is very similar to the Federal League except with smaller schools,” Hall said. “What I learned most at Perry was that you have to prepare for everything in that league. The coaching staffs and the players are so good that every win is hard earned. At Minerva, we’ve put in a lot of work to get ready for the season and I think we’re ready to compete.” “HAVE A GREAT SEASON!”

Targeting getting most of the attention this fall BY RUSTY MILLER Associated Press Writer
COLUMBUS — The key word when it comes to football rules this fall — one fans will hear again and again — is “targeting.” In the parlance of the NCAA, that describes players who hit a defenseless player above the shoulders. Do it, and you’ll be ejected, and your team gets a 15-yard penalty. Spectators may love a crunching hit, but the ruling bodies of the game at all levels are putting extra emphasis on safety in this current environment where concussions have undergone particular scrutiny. Coaches are also putting high hits under the microscope. “We’re going to have an official come in and discuss the new rule on the targeting of players and ejections,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said.
2013 FOOTBALL RULES CHANGES
“We had one in practice already — the player would have gotten thrown out of the game, the official told me. I just want to make sure we’re on the same page.” Every Ohio State player has had an instructional video sent to his iPad about the safety of tackling and avoiding dangerous hits. It’s talked about in meetings, practices and huddles and will undoubtedly be in the headlines when the games start to count. “That’s a game-changer,” Meyer said. “That’s not just the next new rule. That’s a big one.” The Buckeyes’ co-defensive coordinator, Everett Withers, conceded there are still problems figuring out just exactly what a targeted hit is. “It’s really about targeting the head and neck area. If you’re not targeting that, then it should not be a call,” he

said. “The problem is that as a defensive coach, you’re trying to teach to tackle up high so you can run through a guy. What we don’t want to do is try to get our head out of tackling because now the shoulder pads weren’t really made to be tackling instruments. They were made for safety and protection, too. There’s a little bit of a contradiction in what’s going on.” All ejections under the new rule are reviewable through video replay. The replay official must have “conclusive evidence” to overturn the ejection. Conferences are permitted to add sanctions or reduce a suspension based on a postgame review. Also in the college game, the NCAA clarified blocking below the waist, determined the ball cannot be spiked to stop the clock if there’s less than 3 seconds left on the clock and will allow instant replay to adjust the clock at the end of each quarter. In the NFL, players who celebrate after a first down by spinning the ball can be called for taunting. “Verbal abuse of an opponent” is one of three points of emphasis this season, the others being hits on players in the grasp on the ground or whose progress has been stopped, and discouraging ball carriers from grabbing and twisting an opponent’s face mask.
Similar to the new rules in the college game, the pros also are trying to prevent or at least limit concussions and upper-body injuries. Ball carriers and tacklers are no longer permitted to lead with the crown of their helmets, and no contact can be made to the head or neck area of a defenseless player. The flagged player can be suspended. Also, peel-back blocks are now illegal inside the tackle box. The so-called “tuck rule” — when a quarterback loses possession of the ball while attempting to bring it back to his body — has been deleted from the NFL’s record book. And long-snappers are now considered defenseless players while snapping the ball. Just like in college and the NFL, at the high school level special emphasis has been put on preventing injuries, particularly a prohibition of contact to and with the helmet. Additional changes or points of interest include: pass interference now results in a 15-yard penalty and there is no automatic first down (for a defensive call) or loss of down (for an offense); initiating contact with a helmetless player is now an illegal personal-contact foul; players must sit out the next play if their helmet comes off; it’s a catch now if an airborne player is carried out of bounds by an opponent; and teams can be penalized 15 yards for interfering with a fair catch.

Returning lettermen
Ten, including two starters on offense and two starters on defense.
Basic offensive formation Balanced set/2-by-2.
Offensive outlook
The Bears will be without their biggest playmaker from last season in quarterback Bub Haddox, who has
decided to focus solely on baseball his senior year. Haddox was the team’s leading rusher and must be replaced along with the team’s top five pass catchers from 2012. There are plenty of holes to fill as Oak Glen also lost a big, experienced offensive line. Junior Chase Hartley takes over at quarterback, while senior David Campbell will carry the load at running back. “We want to run the football first,” Whittington said. “Then, we’ll develop the pass off of that with some playaction. We have a returning starter at tailback and we intend on getting him the ball.”
Basic defensive formation Hybrid 4-2/4-4.
Defensive outlook
The Golden Bears gave up an average of 41.3 points per game in their six losses last season. “Our plan is to stop the run first and
play the pass second,” Whittington said. “We want to control the line of scrimmage. That’s our primary goal.”

Elder markets college football BY CHRIS RAMBO Staff Writer
NEWELL, W.Va. — Beginning with the 2014 season, major college football will embark on a new era and a man with local ties will play a prominent role. Newell native Ken Elder, a 1981 graduate of Oak Glen High School, was recently named Senior Director of Marketing and Strategic Partnership for the new College Football Playoff. He will oversee much of the sales and marketing efforts for the organization. “A playoff for major college football is something that many people have wanted for a long time,” Elder said. “It’s exciting to be a part of the organization as it takes shape, I believe there will be a great number of marketing possibilities.” The playoff is designed to group the top four teams in the country—as selected by a panel—in an end-of-season mini tournament to determine the national champion. After this season, it will replace the current Bowl Championship Series, which has tried to pair the first and second ranked teams in a championship game since 1998. Elder, who officially begins his role in September, joins the playoff armed with years of experience in helping plan big events for college and pro football. Over the last 12 years, he has directed or consulted on sales and marketing efforts for six Super Bowl Host Committees. He has also worked in three NCAA Division I athletic departments and helped oversee three bowl games. Since 2009, Elder has run his own sports marketing company based in Boca Raton, Fla., with his client list

including host committees for two of the last three Super Bowls. Earlier this year he assisted in the development of an interactive fan experience for the BCS National Championship Game. “I definitely think that my previous football experience played a part in the hire,” Elder said. “The committee was looking for somebody who has worked championship football games in the past and it’s something I’m very comfortable doing.” With the first playoff games a year and half away, much of Elder’s attention is focused on developing a strong corporate hospitality program. He is aggressively targeting various corporate groups and says the reception has been mostly positive. “When you combine a big event with the special flair of college football, that is a really attractive package,” Elder said. “I’ve been blown away over the years by the passion of college football fans. This past year for BCS National Championship, Notre Dame had 30,000 fans show up for a pep rally. That passion is something that sponsors like to be associated with.” One thing in particular that Elder believes will make the playoff attractive is the continuity involved. Under the Bowl Championship Series, corporate hospitality was handled by whichever

bowl game happened to be hosting that year’s championship. Now it will be Elder and his group overseeing things every year. “Continuity is certainly a big selling point,” Elder said. “It’s nice for our corporate sponsors to know they will be getting the same experience every year. Under the old bowl system, everybody ran things a little differently and there was no way to replicate the year-to-year experience.” In addition to corporate hospitality, Elder will also serve as a liaison to ESPN and the other New Year’s Day bowl games, developing interactive fan experiences and making sure all marketing efforts are coordinated. “There will be a lot meetings and planning going on in the next year and a half to make everything runs smoothly,” Elder said. “We are trying to develop packages tailored to each individual “GOOD LUCK GOLDEN BEARS”

company.” Elder, who played basketball and tennis for Oak Glen, earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida Atlantic University and a masters in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University. After college he went back to Florida Atlantic and helped with the launch of their men’s basketball program in 1988. Three years later he worked behind the scenes for the University of Miami as their football team won a share of the national championship (he received a ring which is on display at the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame). Though he has been all over the country helping with some of the biggest events in sports, Elder still holds a special place for where he grew up. “I try and make it back here to visit my stepdad and mother as often as possible,” Elder said. “I’ve lived away for a while but I still have a deep affinity for this area.”

2013 Outlook
The Golden Bears relied on 15 seniors last season. Now they’re gone, along with quarterback Bub Haddox, who had 1,105 yards of total offense and scored a team-high 72 points. It remains to be seen how the young players will respond. “I think our strength will be flying under the radar,” Whittington said. “No one expects anything from us, but we’ve got a lot of athletes. I’d rather be the underdog. That way, we can just go out and play football. We might come out of nowhere this year.” The Golden Bears will open the season by hosting Edison and then traveling to Beaver Local.
be a playoff team,” Foster said. “Certainly in the future we will have to look at adding some bigger schools to have a realistic chance.” Crestview has been scheduling bigger schools for the past several years and coach Paul Cusick said that would not change. “I’m glad that I’ve been scheduling bigger schools for a while. It’s gotten us used to playing a different level of competition.” Crestview coach Paul Cusick said. “In a way we are hurt by playing a lot of Division VI schools, but if those schools are good then it shouldn’t matter as much. We are hoping for a good competitive schedule.” The Rebels, who have advanced to the state playoffs five straight years, will still have to contend with Youngstown Ursuline in Division V, Region 15 but will no longer have to worry about Kirtland—which ousted Crestview the last two years—after the defending state runner-up Hornets dropped to Division VI. “I’m actually a little disappointed to lose Kirtland and St. Thomas Aquinas from our region,” Cusick said. “Those were some fun matchups the last couple of years. “I’m glad that I’ve been scheduling bigger schools for a while. It’s gotten us used to playing a different level of competition.” PAUL CUSICK, CRESTVIEW COACH
can to prepare.” “Any road in this area is going to be tough in the playoffs,” Foster said. “It’s kind of pick your poison. You either have to deal with Ursuline in Division V or Kirtland in Division VI.” Besides division expansion, the other big issue taken up by the OHSAA in the past year has been competitive balance. Private schools make up 17 percent of the OHSAA membership but have won more than 40 percent of the state titles, leading many school officials to call for some kind of change in the current structure. In May, a proposal that would have adjusted enrollment figures based on a team’s number of open enrollment players was defeated by 19 votes, the third time such a proposal has been struck down. “I think there is some validation to the argument that parochial schools be moved up,” Foster said. “I would have to see some of the proposals to comment any further, but when you look at the state championship games every year you see the majority of teams being private schools. It seems to me that there is some advantage there.” “I don’t think there should be any sort of separation between public and private schools,” Cusick said. “I could eventually see something happening along the lines of what’s been talked about with roster multipliers, but I don’t think it’s going to be in the near future.” Regardless of how they are affected by offseason change, the area coaches know their energy is best spent focusing on the football field. “Honestly, I would rather be in Division VI with everybody else in the league, but there is nothing we can do about our enrollment numbers,” United coach Mike Ward said. “We just have to take care of what we can control.”

2013 Outlook
The Quakers went 0-10 last season after getting 22 wins the previous three seasons. “We are extremely positive,” Johnson said. “There’s no reason we can’t go out and have a good season. We’ve got to go out and play extremely well and plan to win them all.” The Quakers are concentrating on

what they have, not what they don’t have. “Strength is that we are in the second year of the program,” Johnson said. “Weaknesses are that we lack depth and recent success. The goals are that we will play a physical brand of football.” The Quakers may not be favored to win the NBC title, but will get a chance to take on all the preseason favorites. “I’ve always believed the returning champion is the team to beat until someone knocks them off,” Johnson said. “So I’m going with West Branch. I also think Alliance is as talented team in the league, winning their last four games.”

They have a lot of holes to fill as they graduated eight three- and four-year lettermen. “We lost a lot of starters,” Dota said. “The thing we’ve had the first two years we’ve been here is we had a lot of guys with game experience and now we don’t. You can’t replace that.” The Warriors do return some size up front on the line. “We must believe in the system and each other before anything is possible,” Dota said. West Branch lost its three non-league games to open the season before winning six of seven in the NBC. The
