111-year-old recalls early days of the Girl Scouts RODRIQUE NGOWI Associated Press
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — At 111, Amelia "Milly" England can still remember the adventures she had nearly a century ago as one of the earliest Girl Scouts. As the organization celebrates its 100th birthday, England, who joined the Thistle Troop in New Bedford in 1914, said in an interview that she still considers herself a Girl Scout. She counts her gold Girl Scout ring with its emerald gemstone, which also happens to be her birthstone, among her most prized possessions. She recalls sewing her own uniform — a long-sleeved blouse with a blue neck scarf — that she wore on camping trips and to troop meetings, dances and suppers at a local church. "I know we started something good," England said from her motorized wheelchair in the nursing home she moved into last year. "It was good for a lot of girls." Niece Wendy Messaline said England met Girl Scouts of the USA founder Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low during the nascent years of the organization, which Low started in Savannah, Ga., in 1912 so girls could build character, learn skills and have an outlet to simply have fun.

England doesn't remember that along-ago encounter, but she does vividly recall the escapades she indulged in as a Girl Scout, including her first camping trip, which began with a ride by street car to the end of the line, followed by a hike to the camp site. "We were six to a tent," she chuckled, reminiscing about the spartan conditions at the camp. "'Turn over,'" she said, laughing mischievously while motioning how the girls sleeping in her packed tent would turn over at the same time in a choreographed move intended to ensure they all stayed comfortable. Boy Scouts also made life more interesting those days, trying to court her and other Girl Scouts when the two groups got together, said England as she laughed softly while holding a 1914 group picture and pointing to those who wanted to be her boyfriend. The early Girl Scouts years were not exactly glamorous as members focused on practical life skills. One of the first things she learned was the art of spring cleaning at the home of the Thistle Troop leader. The familiar Girl Scout uniforms were not ready-made then, England said, and everyone had to cut and sew their blouses. The troop gave her somewhere to belong when she moved with her family from England more than a century ago. Three siblings were left behind because her family couldn't afford to bring them when she, her mother and two younger siblings came here to join their father. The siblings later rejoined the rest of the family in New Bedford. "I wanted to belong to a gang always," England said. " ... it seemed like I always belonged there." Her sense of adventure and fierce independent streak come across when she offers advice for today's Girl Scouts. "Well, they gotta think for themselves and do what they think is best," England said boldly. "Don't let them tell you what to do."

This undated file photo shows Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Ga. Low founded the U.S. Girl Scout movement in 1912 and lived to see the organization reach a membership of more than 168,000. She died in 1927. Low's original registration book from March of 1912 shows 102 recruits. Now a century has passed and millions of Americans have taken the Girl Scout promise, sold Samoas and Thin Mints by the truckload and gone on to careers from CEOs to astronauts.

Girl Scouts of the USA Girl Scout Mission
At Home and Abroad
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Girls at home and abroad participate in troops and groups in more than 92 countries through USA Girl Scouts Overseas, and over 100 local Girl Scout councils offer girls the opportunity for membership across the United States.
100 Years
Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Ga.
An International Family
An American Institution
Through its membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 145 countries.
Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the U.S. Congress on March 16, 1950.
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
A Pivotal Part of Women's History
What Do Girl Scouts Do?
More than 50 million American women enjoyed Girl Scouting during their childhood—and that number continues to grow as Girl Scouts of the USA continues to inspire, challenge, and empower girls everywhere.
Girl Scouts earn badges, hike and camp, participate in the cookie program, and much more. They improve neighborhoods, protect the planet, design robots, and establish sports clinics.
Still Growing Strong
Today, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts—2.3 million girl members and 880,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers. Empowering Girls
Girl Scout Promise and Law
In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.
Here are GSUSA's Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law. GSUSA has taken a more liberal position on belief in God than the Boy Scouts of America, as can be seen from the official explanation of 'God' in the Promise: The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
Girl Scout program starts girls off on a Journey of their choice from the National Leadership Journeys series. They'll earn awards, have fun, and take on projects that change the world. Girls then add The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting to their program portfolio. The Girl's Guide offers girls national proficiency badges, traditions and history, an awards log, and much more. Let Brownie Elf walk you through a fun video describing the Girl's Guide. Girls will want to keep up with all the excitement of Girl Scouting by tuning into Girl Scouts for girls, a place just for girls and teens to enjoy Girl Scout games and videos and explore travel, global girls, and fun!
