Improving your golf game 1. Anchor your foot. One of the most basic golf driving tips to get greater distance is to anchor you foot and your body behind the ball. The foot you must anchor is the foot that is behind the ball. For right handed players it will be the right foot and the left foot for left handed players. If you lift your foot too soon when swinging the club you will lose power and distance in the shot.
and affect your confidence. 6. Rotate your hips vigorously. By energetically rotating you hips on the downswing you will bring your core muscles into play and this in turn will increase club head speed and therefore will result in a longer drive. Make sure you do this in a controlled manner and keep that foot anchored to prevent slicing the ball.
2. Keep your elbow touching to your hip. By keeping the right arm close to the hip you ensure the body will drive your arms and club through the ball impact. This will decrease the chances of your hands negatively influencing the shot.
7. Use a short controlled back swing for a longer drive. A common failing amongst golfers is bringing the driver too far back during the back swing. This causes a loss in control of the club. A powerful, more controlled swing can achieved by controlling your wrists and rotating your body into the shot, thus resulting in a more distance.
3. Let the club do the work. A common misconception amongst golfers is that the harder they whack the ball, the further it will go. A handy golf driving tip is: Focus on the middle of the ball and the control you have over your swing. This will give you far better results than trying to increase the power of your swing.Hitting the ball too hard will invariably mean a slice or a fresh air shot. Relax, don’t rush the shot, concentrate on controlling your swing and the club will do the rest for you. Once you have mastered controlling your golf swing you can then gradually increase the power you use when driving the ball. 4. Relax your muscles and keep your grip light. At the top of your backswing, make a slight pause and maintain a light grip through the swing. To keep a light grip, relax the muscles in your forearms and also your fingers. If you do this, you will create a faster, brisker swing release through the ball impact. This will result in a longer drive. 5. Visualise the shot. When taking your practice swings you should try to imagine the shot you wish to hit. Make sure your swing feels comfortable and picture the balls flight when you practice swing. This technique will relax your body as well as your mind. Also, never take too many practice swings as the thought of fluffing the shot will build up in your mind

8. Keep fit. As with any game, you need a certain level of fitness to maintain the ability to play well. Try to perform some stretching exercises before every round of golf. If you have the time, a few trips to the gym each week will benefit your game immensely. 9. Try to hit your drives with minimal spin on the ball. To achieve this you can tee the ball up high. This will promote less spin on the ball as you will be hitting it from a more underneath position. Also, try to avoid moving forward over the ball on impact. This will always reduce spin. 10 . Practice as often as possible. Even though you may be thinking “this is a cliché” … this point can never be stressed enough. Consistency in the amount of times you get out there and play is crucial to a good game. To hone your golfing skills you must play regularly. If you do not practice you will not improve. Each time you play you will learn to tweak your game a little bit more and bring the lessons you learned the previous week to the course with you the following week.

Picking the right golf clubs Finding golf clubs that suit your game used to be simple. You walked into a sporting goods store, asked for your favorite brand of clubs, took a look at them and determined if you could afford them. If you could, you took a box of irons and a box of woods out of the store with you. Today, the process is not so simple, but the results are clubs that are fit for your swing. Step 1 Visit a golf professional or professional club-fitter, who will measure your clubhead speed and will determine the lie angle and length. Step 2 Tell the fitter about your game. Give him details like how long you have been playing, your handicap, your strengths and your weaknesses.
Shorter clubs are easier to control, so if you are an inexperienced golfer, the fitter may suggest standard-length clubs even if you are taller than average. Step 3 Let the fitter take your measurements. He will measure the distance between your wrists and the ground. Taller players don't necessarily need longer clubs because they are tall, and shorter players don't necessarily need smaller clubs.
Tips Golf professionals and club-fitters may charge for the fitting but credit you if you buy a set of clubs from them. Most will provide you with a club-fitting "prescription" that you can then take to shop around.
The distance between the golfer's hands and the ground is a key factor for the length of the clubs. Step 4 Try different clubs at the length the fitter recommends. Ultimately, the clubs should feel comfortable for you and produce results.

Great golf tips for beginners Most recreational golf players do not have the luxur y of having an instructor watch their every swing and discuss problem areas. Hiring a golf instructor can be expensive and most of us cannot afford to periodically check-in with a golf pro for pointers. Golfers are always trying to find ways to lower their scores and improve their game. For those who cannot afford a golf instructor to analyze their ever y move, here are a few tips for beginners wishing to lower their scores at the game: Work On Your Swing A proper golf swing should be driven by the hips
and your goal is to wield the club into a pendulum-like manner that creates the widest arc. There are five components to a proper swing. These are the grip, stance, backswing, downswing and finish. Grip According to legendar y golfer Ben Hogan, the grip is critical because it is the only link between the ball and the body. He suggests gripping the club with the left hand slightly above the right. Also the left index finger should be under the right pinky. The right thumb should point to the left, while the left thumb should point down the shaft.
Stance Your knees must be slightly flexed as if sitting on a stool. The upper body and back should remain straight while keeping your chin up but relaxed. This allows for proper shoulder rotation during the backswing. Also, your arms must remain straight but relaxed. Backswing In a backswing, the clubhead, shaft and hands are first then followed by the arms, shoulders and hips to be followed by a complete hip rotation. At the top swing, try to keep the club as parallel to the ground as possible. At this position, imagine you are pointing your club at the target.
Downswing The downswing is the reverse sequence of the backswing. You should try to create a steep angle of attack and this is produced by creating as much as lag between the hands and the clubhead. During impact, the left leg should straighten while the right leg bends to allow your body's right side to clear the impact zone. Finish The finish is the smooth and graceful stop to the uncoiling of your hips. You should be facing the target while the left leg is straight. The right leg should be bent and pointing toward the ground.
MORNING JOURNAL • GOLF GUIDE 2014 • TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 2014 • 7 Determine your weakness Golf instructor Eric Johnson suggests keeping basic statistics of your game. This should include total putts, fairways hit and greens in regulation. Input these stats into a software or website, such as shotbyshot.com, to determine your handicap. Having in-depth information about your game allows you to determine your weaknesses more clearly. Have a Pre-shot Routine Poor alignment and improper ball position are the most commons reasons for bad shots.
When your body and the course of your swing are not in the same direction, compensation needs to occur and this makes swinging the club difficult. You should develop a preshot routine. According to instructor Sean Parees, this is accomplished by getting behind the ball with your feet together while setting the clubface downwards facing the immediate target. While looking at the target, take a small step with your left foot followed by a larger one with the right. This ensures that the ball is between the left heel and the center. Practice your pre-shot routine until it feels natural and a part of your game.
The actual time depends on how busy the course is, how many people you are playing with and how many strokes everyone takes (a round of 72 will obviously be faster than a round of 112). A golfer playing alone on a course that is not crowded should be able to finish in 2 and a half hours or less. A foursome playing a very crowded course might wind up spending 5 or even 6 hours on the golf course.

How to use the score card The simplest way to mark the scorecard is very simple indeed: When playing stroke play, count the number of strokes you've taken on the hole just completed, and write that number down in the box corresponding to that hole on the scorecard. At the end of each nine holes, tally up the strokes for your front nine and back nine totals, respectively, then add up those two numbers for your 18-hole score. How long does it take to play a round of golf? Four hours is the estimate most people give for how long it takes to play 18 holes of golf.

Ballfinder Scout There's nothing worse than losing your balls. Let the Ballfinder Scout ($179) help you hunt for your stray shots. It won't be able to find balls that landed in water or are completely covered, but as long as a ball is one percent visible, this handheld device will search up to 600 square feet in just one second. With a 3.2 megapixel hi-res digital camera to locate balls up to 35 feet away, point the device in the area where you think your golf ball landed. Walk up to the area and press the green button. When it locates the ball, it will vibrate and display a red cursor bracket around the ball on the 1.25-inch LCD screen. The blue lights will guide you directly to the ball.
DON’T GUESS! GET CUSTOM FITTED! Proper club fitting can give you the consistency and distance you’ve been looking for. Match the club specifications with your swing. Your game will improve drastically. Your handicap will be driven down and you will enjoy the game more!

Proper golf attire is important Show up looking presentable! If you’re playing with the guys from the office, think of this as a professional engagement requiring appropriate dress.
Most private countr y clubs have a dress code that usually requires: A golf shirt with a collar. Unsure of what constitutes acceptable clothing for a game of golf? Sticking to name brand golf wear is a very safe bet. Shorts are OK, but they must be designed for golf; not gym shorts or cut-offs. They should be no shorter than just above your knees.
Denim apparel is usually not appropriate. Pants and/or shor ts should have belt loops, but no cuffs since they trap dirt. Wear a leather belt. The belts that Tiger wears, with a silver tip, are stylish. Golf clothes are often bright and colorful, but you don’t need to wear all the colors at the same time! Colors are like kids and employees. Some work together, and get along just fine; others always fight. Choose one bright color and pair with neutrals (tan, black, white). Maybe the first time you play with your boss a classic combination of brown
or blue with khaki would be a wise choice. And only one plaid (or patterned) element in your attire, please! Wear proper golf shoes – not running shoes, or sandals! Just about every countr y club on the planet has switched from metal spikes to require soft spikes or a “built-into-the-sole” tread design. Bring a pair of street shoes. You may be having lunch or a drink in the clubhouse after wards. Change into your golf shoes in the locker room, not at your car in the parking lot. If you’re wearing long pants the socks should match your trousers. If you opt for shorts, wear light colored socks with white or sad-
dle style shoes; black socks with black shoes. The black socks and shoes looks slightly nerdy, but if you want to wear black shoes with shorts that’s the best combo! Hats are a good idea. They help keep the sun off your face, and may improve your vision. Either baseball style or straw golf hats are appropriate. If you’re playing in cooler weather (like most 6 am tee times!) a golf sweater, vest, or jacket is practical. Dressing appropriately shows respect for the member who invited you, the other members of your group, and for the great and ancient game of golf.
