CALCUTTA —During its May 23 graduation Beaver Local High School awarded 10 students the rank of valedictorian. The first valedictorian was Halie Brooks, daughter of Peggy Brooks, East Liverpool; and Gerald Brooks, Biloxi, Mississippi. A member of the varsity cheerleading squad, she was also involved with concert choir and the spring musical. She was vice president of Students Against Destructive Decisions and National Honor Society (NHS) secretary. Her awards include NHS and Summi Decem. Brooks plans to major in pre-med and biology at the University of Mount Union. Also graduating as valedictorian was Natalyn Chamberlain, daughter of Robert and Bonny Chamberlain, East Liverpool. She was involved with show choir, Varsity B Spirit Club, yearbook and the online newspaper. Along with National Honor Society, her awards include DAR Good Citizen Award and the Coaches Award for tennis. Chamberlain will attend Geneva College to major in communications writing. Hannah Edwards was also named a valedictorian. She is the daughter of Kevin and Jean Edwards, Wellsville. A member of the girls varsity
golf team, she also served as Students Against Destructive Decisions president, English Honors and Science Club secretary; and choir treasurer and section leader. Her awards include National Honor Society, Summi Decem, Calcutta Rotary September Community Service Student of the Month, All Eastern District second team for golf, and Academic All Ohio for golf and grade point average. Edwards plans to major in speech pathology at the University of Mount Union. Steven Hall II also graduated as a valedictorian. The son of Steve and Ruth Ann Hall, East Liverpool, he was a member of marching band, jazz band, track team, swim team, and school musicals. He was a member of Summi Decem and received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. Hall plans to attend Youngstown State University to major in chemistry. COLUMBIANA —Columbiana High School had 15 students receive top honors during its May 25 graduation held at Clipper Football Stadium in Firestone Park. Named class valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA was Clayton Cooper, son of Bev and Carl Cooper, Canfield. He was a member of the marching and jazz bands, golf team, speech and debate team, as well as Academic Challenge/Quiz Bowl. Among his awards are AP Scholar, All-American Scholar, four year academic letter winner, National Merit Scholarship quarterfinalist, National Honor Society, and a Michelson-Morley Scholarship from Case Western. Cooper plans to double major in mechanical engineering and business at Case Western Reserve University. Also earning a 4.0 GPA was Nick Baylor, son of Kevin and Stephanie Baylor, Columbiana. A member of the varsity soccer and track teams, he was also involved in Interact, Destination Imagination and Physics Olympics. His academic awards include an academic letter, soccer academic award, state soccer academic award, National Honor Society, Milligan College Dean’ s and Soccer scholarships. Baylor will study accounting at Milligan College. Dylan Edwards, son of John and Jody Edwards, Columbiana, also graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He participated in Quiz Bowl/Academic Challenge, Boy Scouts, Destination Imagination, Drama Club and French Club. Along with National Honor Society, his academic achievements include four year distinguished honor roll, Voice
of Democracy Scholarship, South Side Middle School Teachers Scholarship, Buckeye Boys State delegate, and Ohio State Provost Scholarship. Edwards will attend the Ohio State University to major in pre-law/history. Carlie Merlo, daughter of Mark and Cynthia Merlo, Columbiana, graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Her extracurriculars included marching band, Destination Imagination, student government, Interact, and French Club. She is a four year honor recipient, a National Honor Society member, and received an Award of High Distinction Scholarship from Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Merlo plans to study film production and theater at BGSU. The final student to earn a 4.0 GPA was Katherine Schallick. The daughter of Richard and Beth Schallick, Columbiana, she was a four year member and two year co-captain of the varsity soccer team. She was also a four year member of the speech and debate team, serving as co-president her senior year. Her other extracurriculars include ADAPT’ s Columbiana County Youth Coalition and LYFT youth group. She is a four time academic letter winner, four year 4.0 honor roll student, and a member of National Honor Society. COLUMBIANA —During its 2014 graduation, Crestview High School recognized eight students as valedictorians. Alexys Brooks, daughter of Charlie and Diana Wilkinson, Columbiana, was one of eight valedictorians to hold a 4.0 GPA. A member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams, she took part in Freshman Focus and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She was also a member of National Honor Society. Brooks will attend Ohio Northern University to major in forensic biology. The second valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA was Trevor Cope, son of Jeff and Terry Cope, New Waterford. EAST LIVERPOOL —East Liverpool High School held its graduation ceremony on May 25 in the high school gym. Andrew Hutchman was the first of two valedictorians with a 4.0 GPA. The son of David and Kathryn Hutchman, East Liverpool, he was involved with Boy Scouts, tennis, bowling, and amateur radio. His awards include National Honor Society, Scholar of the Month, honors graduation, and the Jack Rudibaugh Memorial Award for bowling. Hutchman will major in atmospheric sciences at The Ohio State University. Also earning a 4.0 GPA to graduate as a valedictorian was Olivia Shaw, daughter of Mike and Cheri Shaw, East Liverpool. A four year member of the cheerleading squad, she was also involved with Outdoor Adventure Club, thespians, and was the 2014 student director. She was also Booster Club president. She received the Heather Coakley Award, Buckeye Girls State Scholarship, a Mount Union Dean’ s Scholarship, and was inducted into National Honor Society. EAST PALESTINE —East Palestine High School had three students graduate as valedictorians during its May 24 commencement ceremony. The first valedictorian was Sarah Adams, daughter of Deb and Mike Adams, Petersburg. She served as student council president, and was a member of Girl Scouts, cross country and band. Her academic awards include National Honor Society, Incentive Scholarship, honor roll, diploma with honors, President’ s Award for Educational Excellence, $4,000 Award of Performance, and a $3,000 Thompson Working Class Families Scholarship. Adams will attend Bowling Green State University to major in integrated mathematics. Megan Brown, daughter of Jim and LeeAnn Brown, East Palestine, also graduated as valedictorian. Her extracurriculars included CLEAR, student council, volleyball, and serving as a class officer. Along with National Honor Society, her academic achievements include an Incentive Scholarship, Leadership Award, honors diploma,
honor roll, and a President’ s Award for Educational Excellence. Brown plans to major in health and human sciences at an undecided university. The final valedictorian was Logan Frye, son of Rhonda Frye, East Palestine; and Jeffrey Frye, Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. A member of the football and track teams, he served as student council vice president and CLEAR treasurer. He was also National Honor Society president. The Leetonia High School Class of 2014. LEETONIA —Leetonia High School awarded diplomas to 55 students during its 2014 commencement ceremony with two sharing the title of valedictorian. Brianne Frederick, daughter of Sherri Frederick and Brian Frederick, Leetonia, is co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. She was involved with marching band, volleyball, student council, and NOSB/Envirothon. Along with National Honor Society, her awards include honor roll, an academic letter, and varsity letter. Frederick plans to attend Bluffton University to major in elementary education. Also named valedictorian is Alyssa Harris, daughter of Connie and Clyde Harris, E. High St., Leetonia. She is a four year member of the softball and volleyball teams, as well as a five year member of the marching band. A student council representative, she served as National Honor Society vice president. During her senior year she was awarded the Trombitas Award for the student athlete with the highest in season GPA. Harris will major in nursing at Kent State University at Salem. Graduating third with a 3.96 GPA is Emily Schneider. The daughter of Ron and Dala Schneider, Grafton Road, Leetonia, she is a member of National Honor Society. Along with 4-H, she is a member of the softball, cross country, and basketball teams. Her senior awards include the Franklin B. Walter All Scholastic Award and second team Inter-Tri County League for basketball. She also received the Trombitas Award for the student athlete with the highest in season GPA for basketball, cross country, and soc-
cer. Schneider plans to study biological sciences/premed at Wright State University. Alexa Bruderly graduated fourth with a 3.9 GPA. She is the daughter of Michael Bruderly, Salem; and Stephanie Bruderly, Leetonia. Her extra curricular activities include softball, marching band, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and student council. She is also president of National Honor Society. Bruderly will attend Youngstown State University to major in pre-med. Graduating fifth with a 3.6 GPA is Melissa Sawman, daughter of Paula Criss and Rodney Sawman, Leetonia. Sawman plans to attend the University of Akron to study radiology. Nicholas Craig, son of Tami Greaver, is graduating seventh with a 3.5 GPA. He is involved with drag racing and marching band. Craig will study mechanical engineering at Youngstown State University. Graduating ninth is Erin Zickefoose, daughter of Jeanna Zickefoose, Stoy St., Leetonia. She is a member of National Honor Society, Drama Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and Spanish Club. Zickefoose is going to attend the Casal Aveda Institute for its cosmetology program. Rounding out the top 10 with a 3.4 GPA is Mara Newton. The daughter of Chip and Bonnie Newton, state Route 558, Leetonia, she is involved with Ruriteens and 4-H. She was also a member of the cross country, basketball and track teams, earning the Captain’ s Award for each. Newton will attend Walsh University to major in occupational therapy.

LISBON —Lisbon David Anderson High School had two students earn the rank of valedictorian during its recent graduation. Holly Graham, daughter of Bob and Kim Graham, Lisbon, was one of two valedictorians with a 4.150 GPA. She was president of the Science and Spanish clubs, as well as a member cross country, track, and marching band. She received All County honorable mention for cross country, a Trustee Scholarship, Honors Scholarship, and AMVETS Scholarship. Graham will attend Kent State University. Also earning a 4.150 GPA to be class valedictorian was Brandon Haldiman. He is the son of Jenette Petro and Raymond Householder, Lisbon; and Adam and Tracy Haldiman, Twinsburg. Along with varsity football, he participated in Academic Challenge, Mock Trial, Spanish Club and Science Club. During his senior year he was named the Inter-Tri County League Defensive Player of the Week. Haldiman plans to major in chemical engineering at Youngstown State University. Graduating second with a 4.127 GPA was salutatorian Lucas Tolson. The son of David and Rebecca Tolson, Lisbon, he participated in theatre, Academic Challenge, Science Club, band, and played golf. Among his awards is a second place finished in the Physic Olympics airplane contest. Tolson will study criminal justice at Kent State University-Salem. Jagr Groubert, son of Gary and Vanessa Groubert, Lisbon, graduated third with a 4.079 GPA. He was student council, Pep Club and Senior Class president, as well as a member of Academic Challenge and mock trial. He received Inter-Tri County League and Quad County honors for football and baseball, and was named Baird Brothers Player of the Week. MINERVA —Minerva Local High School held its graduation ceremony on May 25. Shania Miller, daughter of Thomas and Vanessa Miller, Minerva, was named class valedictorian with a 4.204 GPA. A member of the varsity softball team, she served as Students Against Destructive Decisions treasurer. She was also involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and leadership. SALEM —Salem High School held its graduation ceremony on May 25 in the high school gym and awarded 154 students diplomas. Emma Wilson was named class valedictorian with a 4.172 GPA. Also ranked fourth in her class, she is the daughter of Deanna and George Wilson, Salem. She served as varsity cheerleading and cross country captain, as well as Spanish Club president, Key Club vice president, and student council secretary. Along with being a member of National Honor Society which she served as secretary, her awards included a University of Mount Union Trustee Scholarship, Brooks Writing Awards, and a Buckeye Girls State Scholarship. Wilson will attend Mount Union to major in national security and foreign intelligence analysis. Graduating first with a 4.221 GPA was Mark Fredrickson, son of Lauren and Lee Fredrickson, Salem. A member of the basketball team, he was also involved with Pep Club, German Club, Delta Epsilon Phi and TACT. Among his academic awards was the 2013 Physics Student of the Year Award and Youngstown State University Leslie H. Cochran Scholarship. Fredrickson plans to major in mechanical engineering at YSU. NEW MIDDLETOWN —Springfield Local High School awarded top honors to eight graduating seniors with two sharing the valedictorian ranking. Julia Denmeade, daughter of Maureen and Thomas Denmeade, New Middletown, was one of two valedictorians with a 4.0 GPA. A member of the softball team, she was also involved with French Club, student council and float committee. Her academic awards include National Honor Society, high honor roll, Academic Hall of Fame, Scholar Athlete, and the Leslie Cochran Scholarship from Youngstown State University. Denmeade plans to major in history at Youngstown State University. Also graduating as valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA was Zachary Cain. He is the son of Sandra Cain, New Middletown; and Shawn Cain, Middleburg Heights. HANOVERTON —United Local held its 2014 graduation at 2 p.m. May 25 in the high school gymnasium. Bridgette Kelly, daughter of Chip and Julee Kelly, Lisbon, was named co-valedictorian with a 3.981 GPA. She was active in 4-H, Flight, Talon newspaper staff, and Winona Friends Church youth group. She was also student council treasurer and National Honor Society secretary. Along with NHS, her academic awards include distinguished honor roll, STEM Scholarship and Honors Scholarship. The first valedictorian was Benjamin Dickerhoof, the son of Daniel and Suzanne Dickerhoof, Homeworth. He served as band vice president, and was a member of Environmental Club, Academic Challenge and 4-H. Among his academic achievements are Buckeye Boy’ s State delegate, National Honor Society, and a Merit Based Award from The Ohio State University. Dickerhoof plans to attend OSU and major in chemistry. Alexandrea Garrett was also named valedictorian. Schlueter will major in liberal arts at the University of Dallas. The first honors graduate was Katelyn Mountain. The daughter of Dale and Kim Mountain, Salem, she was involved with yearbook, student council, and served as Leo Club president. She received the Damascus Ruritan Double Your Dollar Scholarship and was an Elks Student of the Month. Mountain will attend The Ohio State University to major in biology. Thomas Korda, son of William and Sandra Korda, Salem, was also an honors graduate. He was Academic Challenge vice-president, tennis captain, as well as a member of the Physics Olympics team and Foreign Language Club. His academic awards include a Rickey Physics Scholarship, National Honor Society, and Elks Teenager of the Month. Tristen Belt also received recognition as an honors graduate. The daughter of Bruce and Adrienne Belt, North Benton, she was a Key Club member. She received the Sullivan Dean Scholarship, Sullivan Academic Scholarship, and was a member of the National Technical Honor Society. While studying culinary arts she was named a star student and earned a medal for FCCLA Senior Culinary Team. Belt will continue to study culinary arts at Sullivan University. Jeremy Truex, the son of Mark and Darla Truex, Beloit, was also recognized as an honors graduate. He was a four year member and co-captain of the tennis team, as well as cross country captain and a member of Foreign Language Club. A member of National Honor Society, he received Northeast Buckeye Conference honorable mention for cross country. Truex will attend the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, to majoring in entrepreneurship and Spanish. The final honors graduate was Kate Lowry, daughter of Krista Lowry and Chris Lowry, both of Salem. She was enrolled in the Seniors to Sophomores and served as a peer tutor. She received a Renewable Award of Distinction Scholarship from Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Lowry plans to major in marine biology at BGSU.

Graduating ninth with a 3.733 GPA was Rebecca Wilms, daughter of Ed and Judy Wilms, Columbiana. She was a five year member of the marching band and three year member of concert band. She also took part in French Club. During her time at Columbiana, she received two perfect attendance awards. Wilms plans to study English, education and communications at Kent State University at Salem. Rounding out the top students and graduating tenth with a 3.723 GPA was David Downey. He is the son of Dave and Penny Downey, Columbiana, and a honor roll student. Downey is considering majoring in either secondary art education, early childhood, or culinary arts.

Tabaka plans to attend St. Francis University to major in physician assistant-health science. The final top student and eighth ranked graduate was Stephanie Lowrey. Lowrey earned a 3.563 GPA and is the daughter of Steven and Sarah Lowrey, Petersburg. She was a member of the cheerleading squad and track team. Her academic achievements include a varsity letter, Scholar Athlete Award, Academic Hall of Fame and academic letter. Lowrey will major in pre-med biology at Edinboro University.

Among his awards are a four-year academic letter, four-year wrestling letterman, two time wrestling district qualifier, Ohio Valley Athletic Conference fifth place wrestler, two year football letterman, first place State Forestry Team, 11 th place National Forestry Team, FFA Star Chapter Farmer, Star Greenhand and four- year dedicated member. Cline plans to attend The Ohio State University with a dual major in agricultural engineering and agricultural education. Seventh in the class is Michaella Mathias. She is the daughter of Ross and Helen Mathias, Hammondsville. She was involved in Future Farmers of America, Beta Club, Spanish Club and soccer. A four-year academic letter winner, she was also inducteed into National Honor Society. Mathias will attend Lake Erie College to double major in biology with a pre-med concentration and equine facility management with a stud farm management concentration. Graduating eighth was Dylan Jones, son of James and Dana Jones, Richmond. His
extracurriculers included Beta Club, basketball, and baseball. Among his awards were National Honor Society, All Ohio Valley Athletic Conference honorable mention in basketball, All Ohio Eastern District special mention in basketball and all ohio eastern district academic award in baseball. Jones plans to major in computer science technology at Kent State University. The ninth ranked graudated was Zoe Westfall, daughter of Carolyn Westfall, Toronto. She served as Spanish Club secretary, Senior Class and choir treasurer, and participated in Solo and Ensemble and softball. A four year softball letterman, she received a superior rating at Solo and Ensemble, is a three-year academic letterman, and a National Honor Society member. Westfall will major in bio-chemistry/ pre-med at Kent State University. Tierra Taylor graduated 10th to round out the Class of 2014. The daughter of Ryan and Nichole Taylor, Toronto, she was involved in softball, concert band, marching band, and Beta Club. She was also a member of National Honor Society. Taylor plans to attend Eastern Gateway Community College to earn an associate’ s degree in arts.
