The $2.3 million addition to the Lepper Library was funded with $2 million in money saved by the board over 15 years and another $200,000 in donations received during that period. In January, the library received $302,000 in federal stimulus money to purchase new furniture and equipment.
LISBON — It took the Lepper Library board nearly 16 years of scrimping and saving to afford a new addition, but library Director Nancy Simpson said it was worth the wait. “I think people will be amazed at how beautiful it turned out,” Simpson said of the addition, which doubled the size of the library to more than 13,000 square feet. The new addition opened in late January, which allowed contractors to begin renovating the old section of the library, which opened in 1898. Renovation of the old section was recently completed in time for the open house and dedication ceremony scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. May 13. library but what it means to the community,” Simpson said. “I think the library is such an important cultural, educational and recreational center for the community, especially a small rural community.” The exterior of the new addition so closely resembles the 113-year-old original section that at first glance it can be difficult to distinguish between the two, and that was no accident. “Our architect (Tim Beck of Richfield) did a beautiful job of blending the old and new,” Simpson said. The first thing visitors notice upon visiting the library is how open and bright the addition is compared to the poor lighting and cramped quarters of the old section. “Everyone who walks in the front door just says ‘wow’ because it’s bright and cheerful, just a very welcoming atmosphere,” she said. Once inside, the DVDs, VHS taps and CDs are to the right, with newspapers and magazines to the left. Comfortable individual seating is available in this area. On the other side of the wall of magazines are the eight public computer terminals with Internet access. “In a little town like this there are still a lot of people without all of the resources some of us take for granted in terms of computer and Internet access and the ability to just go to a bookstore to get what you want,” Simpson

The new addition is handicapped accessible, something the older section was not, and there are now separate restrooms that include an area to change diapers. “That’s what they’ll see when they come in. A lot of userfriendly areas,” she said. A larger room is now available for storage of local history and genealogy records. There is also a conference room for board meetings that is also available to the public. Simpson said the community room has become so popular it is booked at least once a day for the next two months, and in between,

people attending local colleges are finding it to be a quiet refuge for studying. The old library will house the children’s section and administrative offices, both of which had been in the crowded basement. The plaster in the old section has been covered with a drywall veneer, while the rest of the space received new carpeting and a fresh
coat of paint. Perhaps the most interesting new feature is the drive-up window at the rear of the addition that allows patrons to return books, DVDs and CDs. “It is used all the time,” Simpson said. “We empty it out two, three See ADDITION, Page 6

She believes public libraries still have a role to play in today’s society, despite the ever-expanding presence of the Internet in our lives and the growing popularity of e-books. “I think in this day and age, even though there’s some flap over the years about the death of the book, I still think books are an
important part of a library. A lot of people still prefer to hold that lovely book in their hands, the feel of it, the smell of it,” she said. “Whether or not people are getting information from a book or the Internet, I think the library is still a very important portal to that information,” she added.

Generous donors have funded library’s continued growth By RENEE COLEMAN Staff writer
LISBON — Since it opened its doors in 1898 the Lepper Library has stood at the corner of East Lincoln Way and Vine Street, beckoning residents and travelers alike to come inside. Key to the creation was the $10,000 donation from Virginia Lepper in honor of her late husband, Charles, in 1897. The donation allowed the construction of a building patterned after an EngVirginia lish Country Church on Lepper property purchased from Elizabeth Harbaugh for $3,600. Money for the property came through donations. The buildings interior featured a center hall with two large rooms on either side. In 1903, Senator Marcus Hanna, a Lisbon native, donated $200 for the interior decoration of the library as part of Ohio’s centennial celebration. Marcus The newly constructed Hanna Lepper Library was officially dedicated on May 24, 1898, opening with
3,000 volumes. By 1899 the number of books borrowed a year reached nearly 8,000 and by 1997 the yearly number had jumped to 130,000. In the early years, patrons were required to pay a $1 annual membership fee. The fee remained in effect until 1902, when library trustees waived it. Around 32 years later, in 1934, the Ohio legislature passed a law where a portion of state tax revenue would be used to fund public libraries. Over the years this funding has been reduced but still the library strives to provide programs and assistance for young and old alike. Just as the number of people using the library grew, so did the number of books offered. From 1904-1920 around $200 was spent on purchasing books. Then in 1926, the library received $5,000 from the will of Dr. Alexander Vanco, along with his personnel library. Vanco served as Lisbon’s Episcopal Church minister. By 1970 the library had outgrown its original building and a new wing was built. Growth also spurred the library’s newest addition which greatly increased its space. tion was razed along with a neighboring house. In a move to expand services the library began its Bookmobile service, or County Extension Service, in 1941, giving access to books to 21 rural schools, 13 communities, and nursing homes. In two months time, 519 youths and 282 adults had borrowed around Solomon J. 1,608 books. The original Firestone Bookmobile arrived on Nov. 5 1941 and was staffed by original bookmobile librarian Geraldine Hacker of Portland, Maine. The addition of this service was even reported in the Nov. 4, 1941 edition of the Evening Journal, “Traveling library will soon roll out of Lisbon over county.” The library also added a Salineville branch in August 1953. Making the branch a possibility was Anne Whitcomb, the bookmobile librarian, and Mrs. Lamont Faulkner, a Salineville housewife. Open on Tuesdays, as well as Fridays and Saturdays, the Salineville branch remained open until Jan. 13, 1959. Just as the library grew to accommodate

its growth, it also expanded to grow with the times. In 1997 the library began offering free Internet access to patrons. For one hour time periods patrons could surf the web and check email. That service continues today with the library even transferring their card catalog onto its website, allowing for quicker book service. It also began to offer movies and music, transition from VHS and cassettes to DVD and CD.
Very seldom has the library closed for extended periods of time. Recently the library was closed for such a period to allow staff members to move Robert books and ready the Tayler new addition for patrons. Prior to that the library closed due to the death of Marcus Hanna to
