BRIDES 2012 | WEDDING DECOR
Bring in nature THIS YEAR’S HOT THEME IS A NATURAL FIT FOR WEDDINGS
N
othing is more beautiful than the things created by Mother Nature, and today’s designers are going to great lengths to bring that beauty into weddings, whether indoors or out. Natural weddings start with a pallette of natural fabrics, typically cotton and linen, to set the tone. Inspiration for accent colors can come directly from nature, too, perhaps even from the location where the wedding will be held. Native plants and textures help give the wedding a sense of place. In other words, a natural wedding is all about harmo-
ny with your surroundings, wherever they may be. For the floral arrangements, wildflowers or daisies can be loosely tied together in bunches to look as if they were just picked from a garden. They will typically look less formal than a traditional wedding but no less elegant when designed tastefully. And, while natural weddings are becoming more
popular each year, they’re not only about creating a style inspired by the Earth. They’re also about protecting it. Natural weddings should incorporate ideas that are friendly for the environment, such as printing recyclable invitations and giving away seed packets and organic, pesticide-free flowers to guests.
The theme is the thing in 2012 One popular trend that continues this year is the themed wedding. It’s about a lot more than picking a consistent style and colors. Instead, it goes the extra step by weaving one central idea through the entire celebration, whether it’s one of the couple’s hobbies or a particular historical period. In a themed wedding, everything — decor, clothing, food and even a gift for guests — is centered around one idea of the couple’s choosing. PHOTO: KVKIRILLOV / YAYMICRO.COM

Great gift ideas for groomsmen When in doubt about what type of groomsmen gifts to get, stick to the top sellers. When you want popular music, you go to the top 100 songs. When you want an ice cream cone, you tend to stick with a standard list of favorites. The same thing holds true when shopping for the best groomsmen gifts. The question then becomes, how do you find a list of the top groomsmen gifts? Visit a store that specializes in wedding gifts for men or wedding gifts in general and you may find a nice selection. Shop online or visit your favorite local shops to find the ideal gifts. The top unique gifts for groomsmen include:
• embroidered cooler chairs • personalized cooler bags • weekender bags • personalized barbeque kits • black leather hip flask with cigarette case • beer steins and sports mugs • personalized pocket watches Unless you have something particular in mind, stick to the top sellers and you can't go wrong.

Layers and textures WEDDING GOWNS THIS YEAR INSPIRED BY VICTORIAN PERIOD
T
here is an unmistakable romance about the Victorian period, from its rich fabrics to its elaborate building architecture and decor.
Now that same romance is inspiring some of today’s most stunning wedding gowns. The emerging style is one that does not directly copy Victorian dresses but evokes the romanticism of the era.
LAYERS The most notable feature of today’s Victorian-inspired dresses is their use of layering to create a rich, full look. Rather than the more simple, flowing styles that have become popular in recent years, the Victorian dresses will pile layer upon layer of fabric to create textures that draw the eye. The skirt is the most obvious area where layering can have its full effect, but the high neck lines and longer sleeves of the Victorian era also create opportunities for designers to recreate the elegance of another time.
FABRICS As part of the Victorian renaissance,
designers are also turning to more delicate fabrics that work together for a fairytale feel. Laces are coming back into fashion as modern dresses try to emulate the feminine, graceful manners so commonly associated with the Victorian period. Sheers, laces and traditional satins may be layered together for a combination that creates delicate shoulder sleeves and intricate designs.
ROYAL INSPIRATION Many people credit Kate Middleton and her Alexander McQueendesigned wedding dress for the resurgance of Victorian style. But the true inspiration was Queen Victoria herself, who was the first modern bride to popularize the white wedding dress. P

A great way to bring friends together If you and your groom are both uninterested in participating in bachelor and bachelorette parties, why not consider a combined “thank-you” event for your wedding attendants? Traditionally held for the bridesmaids as a Bridesmaid Luncheon, this event is a special time that focuses on the love, support and friendship provided by the bridal party during the preparations and organization of the wedding.
For many bridal couples, the idea of bringing their childhood friends, business associates and relatives together as members of their wedding party can seem a bit intimidating as not everyone knows one another; hosting a combined wedding attendant luncheon provides the perfect format for introductions, building of new friendships and a great way to relax together before the wedding date.
Combined bridal party luncheons or wedding attendant luncheons, can be a fun way to introduce the wedding party to one another, create a festive atmosphere as the wedding gets closer and can help to create new friendships before the day of your wedding. This is a wonderful time to deliver the wedding attendant gifts to each member of the bridal party.
It is traditional to host the wedding attendant luncheon within a month of the wedding date. However, if many of your bridal party have to travel a great distance to attend the wedding, it would be best to schedule the luncheon within two or three days of your wedding.

Reception dress KICK UP YOUR HEELS WITH A SIMPLER, MORE DANCE-FRIENDLY ENSEMBLE
O
ne trend that shows no signs of slowing down is the use of a separate reception dress that is simpler and easier to dance in than a traditional wedding gown. And that makes perfect sense. If a bride is going to spend time and money to create a spectacular reception, she should at least be able to wear a dress that lets her enjoy it.
SHORTER SKIRTS One of the most obvious differences in a wedding gown and a reception dress is the length of the skirt. Wedding gowns usually have full-length skirts that can drag on the floor, which is not exactly conducive to kicking up your feet on the dance floor.
Reception dresses are designed to allow more freedom of motion and be more comfortable while looking beautiful at the same time.
CONVERTIBLE DRESSES If you don’t want to go to the expense and hassle of picking a separate dress for the reception, some bridal gowns are actually two dresses in one. Convertible dresses let you dress down between the wedding and the reception, giving you one dress with two functions.

Dual-purpose wedding favors are a hit When planning a wedding, don't overlook the importance of wedding favors. Wedding favors serve as a “thank you” to your guests, but can also become part of the fun of the wedding reception. Traditions are changing and it's no longer necessarily the bride's parents who foot the bill for the wedding ceremony and reception. Couples, now more than ever, are paying for their own weddings and may be working with strict budgets. Couples looking to stretch their wedding dollars should opt for wedding favors that also serve a practical purpose. Place card holders favors are one example of this. Coordinate seating arrangements and leave a special keepsake for the wedding guests with this dual-purpose wedding favor. Other dual-purpose wedding favor ideas include: Candle wedding favors. Decorate the tables with personalized candles that can be taken home by the guests after the wedding.
ambiance and encourages fun and laughter. Wine wedding favors. Pop the cork on this idea and leave the guests salivating for more. Order personalized wine bottles for each guest. Supply the wine glasses and leave a wine cork on every table.
Personalized placemats and/or coasters help protect the table from food and drink, and the guests can bring them home after.
Weddingbubbles! Leave bottles of personalized wedding bubbles at every table and encourage guests to play. This kind of wedding favor adds to the wedding reception
There are many ways to turn wedding favors into dual-purpose gifts. Use your imagination! Your wallet will thank you.

Saying ‘I Do’ and Enjoying It Too By Martie Duncan For NewsUSA
(NU) - For many brides, the quest to plan the perfect day can quickly turn into a nightmare trip down the aisle. Here are a few tips to keep your wedding day bliss from turning into the honeymoon blues. • Marriage Planning 101: Once the ring goes on, the race to plan the perfect wedding begins, giving couples little time to think about the marriage itself or how their wedding spending decisions could affect their future. But smart couples are now setting aside time to address prewedding issues such as what they will do when it comes to financial planning, spending money, raising children and family politics. With nearly half of all newlyweds taking on debt to finance their “big day,” couples should take every opportunity to make their wedding-related and everyday spending count toward their future. One unique new rewards program, uTANGO.com, offers couples $10,000, $100,000 and even $1 million in cash rewards to stay married and shop with uTANGO’s 250-plus merchants such as Expedia, Target.com, Nordstrom.com and BlueNile. In addition to helping couples save for their future, uTANGO.com offers free advice from wedding, financial and relationship experts. By taking a proactive approach, couples can leverage their wedding spending to ease financial worries and start building toward their future. • Destination USA: While destination weddings, especially to international locales, con-

tinue to be one of the hottest wedding trends in recent years, they can also present challenges such as increased costs, security concerns, language barriers and unreliable vendors. A less expensive alternative is to pick a centrally located U.S. city like Chicago, known for fantastic wedding and party venues, choice accommodations and activities to suit any taste and budget. It may not be as exotic as Tahiti, but couples often find that more family and friends can attend and planning challenges are drastically reduced when the nuptials stay stateside. • Managing wedding expectations: For many brides, planning the perfect wedding is a major life event decades in the making. With this in mind, it’s easy to see how wedding expectations can get out of hand in a hurry. With wedding euphoria taking over, busy brides and grooms can quickly lose sight of spending, causing the perfect wedding to turn into fights over money. By managing expectations of what a “dream” wedding should be, it is still possible to have a lovely and elegant wedding without breaking the bank. • Bridezilla-free zone: The term “Bridezilla” has been used to describe a difficult, unpleasant, perfectionist bride whose obsession with planning the perfect wedding day leaves frustrated
family, friends, bridal vendors and even her groom distraught in her wake. Belligerent Bridezillas beware: Horror stories of fist fights, hair pulling, kicking and screaming from out of control brides-tobe have put wedding planners, vendors and bridesmaids on the offensive. Some wedding vendors now go as far as to include language in their contracts reserving the right to cancel if the bride’s behavior is determined to be “out of control or abusive.” So, whether you hit the gym or hit the spa, have a plan in place to handle wedding-related stress and keep Bridezilla at bay. • Just say “no”: Brides place such demands on their bridesmaids these days that it is not uncommon for them to decline, even when it’s one of their best friends. Not only is the financial responsibility of being a bridesmaid staggering, but the time commitment demanded by some brides is also daunting. The massive to-do lists handed out by brides, coupled with the obligatory appearances for shopping, parties and showers, can leave bridesmaids feeling underappreciated, overworked and broke after the wedding is over. Brides should be upfront about both time and financial expectations with their friends when asking them to join their wedding party and understand if the answer is no. Martie Duncan is a nationally renowned wedding expert who has worked in the bridal industry for more than 20 years. Duncan has consulted on episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and the film “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and is currently editor in chief of the uTANGO.com LifeMatters e-magazine (www.utango.com/LifeMatters).

BRIDES 2012 | COLOR TRENDS
BOLD
or more subdued?
THIS YEAR'S POPULAR COLORS ARE EITHER PALE BLUES AND BEIGES OR BOLD, BRIGHT SPLASHES. TAKE YOUR PICK.
T
his year’s hot wedding colors are at two extremes: very subtle or very bold.
One trend is using pale blue and beige together for an elegant, understated look. The other is using extremely bright colors to make a big impact. Either way — subdued or extreme — you can find a combination that speaks about who you are as a bride.
PALE BLUES If there is any color that defines 2012 weddings, it’s a pale, smoky blue paired with beige. This is a twist on the blues and chocolate browns that have been popular in home decor for several years, although it works much better with toned-down hues for weddings. The end result is a beautiful combination that evokes romanticism and whimsy, creating a great base pallette around which you can build your wedding decor. Think about it: combining light blue and pure white might look too childish, almost like Cinderella’s
grand ball. But when you add in beige, you create a warmer, more sophisticated look that is perfect for a modern wedding.
BOLD COLORS If you want to take the opposite extreme, bold splashes of color continue to be popular this year. Using bright, highly saturated colors is a great way to add some visual “pop” and fun to your wedding. This year’s hot colors range from Kelly green to neon pink and hot orange, although they’re rarely monochrome. By pairing colors that don’t typically go together — such as navy blue with hot pink — you can create a unique look for your wedding that gives it a distinctive visual DNA. Deciding to go bold comes with risks, though. It’s easy to overdo it when dealing with such bright colors, so use them in moderation. PHOTOS: YELLOWJ, TOBKATRINA / YAYMICRO.COM

Tips for a stress-free wedding Weddings don't have to be all that stressful, but they are. The first thing you have to do is relax. That's easier said than done, but calm down. Everything will go fine. If it doesn't, nobody really cares anyway. What they care about is helping you celebrate one of the most important days in your life.
stores now have a plastic "bubble" that fits inside an oval picture frame. They come in several different sizes. You can put your bouquet inside there. If you do, you might also put one of your invitations. Hang it in a prominent position if you do so the hubby can't forget your anniversary date.
Following are a few simple little hints. Make a to-do list, with a timeline, if you haven't done so already. Check off each item as it's done. You'll be surprised how much you've gotten accomplished in a short time. Allow yourself plenty of time for everything, but don't do anything too early. If you do, you'll find yourself obsessing over the whole wedding. Ask other people to do some things. Don't try to do it all yourself.
Can't find a decent Guest Book? Use your mother's. That's what I did, and she was thrilled. I just added our information behind hers. What you end up with a family heirloom that can be passed down until you run out of space in the book.
When you're making your list, start a list of the wedding pictures you want. The day of the wedding, you won't be thinking of that when the photographer is shooting the pictures. After the wedding is over, you don't want to be looking at the pictures and realize you forgot to get a picture of your mom. Not that she would let you forget anyway, but you get the point. Have the photographer check off the list as he/she is shooting so they don't forget either. As you think of people you want in the pictures, add to the list. Before the actual wedding, cross off any pictures you can live without if you're trying to save money on the pictures. Don't forget to add the minister into one of the pictures, esp. if you know them personally.
Miz Vickie sez -- weddings can be terrible or terrific. Your choice! Don't hesitate in getting assistance. You can use a "regular" wedding coordinator, family, or friends. On your wedding day, the couple should focus on themselves and not on other things, so leave the last-minute "stuff" to someone you trust to tie all the pieces together. There is no place for frustration on your wedding day, just flexibility, and lots of it! Remember: Relax! Enjoy your day. Don't get so stressed you ruin your wedding.
WEDDING BRAS WE CARRY 50 SIZES
If you're doing your own catering, use the 6" plates. It'll save money, (you won't have to buy two different sizes,) and the 6" are cheaper. If you have one of the warehouse places like Sam's, they have really nice clear plates. I use them. It'll save on food, also. If people have a large plate, they fill it up all the way. At the wedding shower, bachelor/bachelorette party, reception, and any other time, be very sure you or someone else makes a list of the gifts. There is more confusion here than anyplace else, and if someone cares enough about you to give you a gift, you don't want to hurt their feelings by forgetting the thank-you card. After you get back from the honeymoon, make doing the cards your first priority. Here's a neat little idea. If someone gives you a gift certificate or money, take a picture of what you used the money to buy. Enclose it with the thank-you card. "Thank you for the money--we used it to buy this lovely cookie jar" is so much nicer than "Thanks for the money." Also, for your friends that sent a gift but couldn't come to the wedding, try to enclose a ribbon, or matchbook, or program, if you had them at your wedding.

Give your wedding
personality FIVE IDEAS FOR AN EVENT AS UNIQUE AS YOU ARE
1.
LOCATION: Weddings don’t have to be held in churches, so get creative with the site of your ceremony or reception. Look for a location that matches the couple — the park where you had your first kiss, a quaint cabin in the woods for nature lovers, or even at a stadium for big-time sports fans. You’re only limited by your imagination.
2.
MUSIC: Let’s face it. “Here Comes the Bride” just isn’t for everybody. If you want your ceremony to have a non-traditional twist, there’s no reason you can’t walk down the aisle to Rhianna or Coldplay. The soundtrack of your wedding ought to reflect your unique personality.
3.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Today’s wedding photographs are about a lot more than posed pictures with family. If you find the right photographer, you’ll have all kinds of options to reflect who you are, from creative, artistic portraits to photojournalism that documents the entire day in beautiful images. The key is finding a photographer who clearly understands what you want and has the skills to make it happen.
4.
STATIONERY: Bland-looking cream or white wedding invitations are out, and personalized invites are in. Use the invitations you send as a chance to reflect your personality and set the tone for what guests can expect at your wedding.
5.
ENTRANCE: If you want to make a real splash, come up with a creative way to make your big entrance at the wedding. Whether your arrive on a white horse, Napoleon Dynamite style, or show up in a stretched Hummer with bass blasting from the stereo, your first impression can be one guests never forget.
6.
CAKE: Your wedding cake doesn’t have to be frilly and tiered. Watch “Cake Boss” or “Ace of Cakes” to get inspiration for just how creative your cake can be. And if you really want to surprise people, forego the wedding cake in favor of the wedding donuts — or whatever dessert you want. PHOTO: IOFOTO / YAYMICRO.COM

Wedding gifts for the car enthusiast If your groom has requested that you assist him in purchasing the wedding attendant gifts for his friends, you might find yourself overwhelmed with what to buy. What may seem like an insurmountable task is really quite easy if you closely examine the different hobbies of each of his friends.

If a member of your wedding party is a car enthusiast, you might despair over what to get them as a wedding attendant gift. However, with a little creative online shopping, this task is easier than you might think. Adorable and appropriate cuff links with a five-speed motif area a wonderful accent for the race car enthusiast's wedding tuxedo. Supplement the wedding apparel with a car cleaning kit or a car hazard safety kit and you have created a unique wedding attendant gift especially designed with this special friend in mind. If he is a proud owner of a showroom car, why not include a deluxe car cover with which to cover his prized automobile after he has cleaned and polished it. Another idea is to have a personalized parking sign made for the make and model of the vehicle your friend owns, car enthusiasts are very proud of their prized automobiles and anything that identifies and recognizes it's value in their lives is always appreciated. A hand crocheted steering wheel cozy is also a very personalized and clever gift for those that park their cars in the hot sun. The cozy covers the wheel, and is removed before driving - preventing burned hands (ouch!)

BRIDES 2012 | FOOD
Bake in some goodness BAKED GOODS ADD WARMTH TO RECEPTIONS
F
or many people, the smell of freshbaked treats evokes the happiest of memories.
And this year, one of the biggest trends in weddings is serving baked goods to evoke the warmth and taste of home. Pies, cupcakes, brownies and cookies are all popular options that brides are choosing to give their reception a fresh, sweet taste that will make lasting memories.
TASTEFUL FLAVOR One of the challenges of serving baked goods at a wedding is making the event seem relaxed but not cheap. After all, baked goods can be made by just about anybody, so it can be a
good way to save money for other parts of the wedding if you can ask people to bring baked goods to help out. The secret is making it not look like a thrown-together potluck buffet. One good option is choosing a caterer that offers a wide selection of baked goods. They’re the experts who can deliver exactly what you need. You can even ask if they will incorporate a few of your family’s favorite recipes to personalize the event, letting Grandma serve her famous oatmeal rasin cookies that have made you happy since you were 5. Baked goods are all about comfort, so serve whatever makes you smile and feel good inside.
PRESENTATION Too often brides will decide what foods to serve without thinking about how they will be presented to guests, and that’s a mistake. Baked goods, like any foods, will become a part of the reception’s overall atmosphere. You need to think about how they will be served, garnished and presented to your guests, making sure the baked goods follow your overall theme and design. One possibility is leaving a small box or bag with a sampling of baked goods at each guest’s place setting at the table. Another is using baked goods as wedding favors, giving each person a package of treats they can take home with them to continue the fun. With the right foods and beautiful presentation, baked treats can become a big part of your wedding memories. PHOTO: GUNNAR3000 / YAYMICRO.COM

A beach party wedding
If you are holding a beach themed wedding, keeping the theme universal makes the planning and preparations much easier. When you begin planning the bridesmaid luncheon, why not consider combining the male and female attendants “thank you” party into one competitive and fun event. Planning the wedding attendant luncheon for your entire bridal party can be a great deal of fun and take very little effort as long as you identify your main goal of the event and create an entire afternoon around that activity. Since you are hosting a luncheon, a beach barbecue would be a thematic and fun. An afternoon activity that would provide lighthearted fun and competitiveness between the two sides of the bridal party could include a “sand castle building” competition at your local beach. This unique and exciting activity would provide a great opportunity for everyone to meet and get to know one another and express their creative side along the way. Additional activities that could be included in the day's itinerary could include a game of beach volleyball and a bonfire. However, if you intend to build a fire on a public beach it is often a good idea to check with your city council to discover if any special permits are necessary prior to hosting your event. Taking time to locate beach themed wedding attendant gifts for each member of your wedding party is actually easier than you might think; many online and retail wedding planning outlets have unique and creative wedding party favors to give to your friends and family on this special day.

Getting the right bra for your wedding day If you’ve recently set a date (congrats!) your mind is whirling with concerns – finding the perfect dress, selecting your bridal party, choosing the right venue, and obviously – looking AMAZING on your wedding day. When it comes to looks, there’s more than just the dress, jewelry, and shoes though. Have you thought about what goes under your perfect dress? The bra you choose for your wedding day can have a dramatic effect on how your dress fits and how comfortable you are. Remember, it WILL be an amazing day, but also a long one, so it’s important you feel comfortable the whole time.
Tips To Choose the Best Bra for Your Wedding Day
Consider the fabric of your dress – If your dress is made of silk or a similar lightweight material, you’ll want to choose a bra that’s seamless and smooth so it won’t show through. If your dress is lacy or embroidered, you won’t be as limited on choices. Consider your comfort – Remember, you’ll be in your dress – and bra – until late into the night, so make sure the bra you choose is comfortable so you can wear for hours. Look at the style of your dress – There are many great bras to choose from, but it all depends on the style of your dress. Take a look at the most popular styles of dresses and what bras may be best for each:

MORNING JOURNAL SPRING BRIDAL EDITION • FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012 • 19 Backless – An adhesive, backless bra or petals are the best choice for a backless dress. A good adhesive bra should give you support for at least 12 hours. Sleeveless – Sleeveless dresses are a bit easier to find lingerie for. Try on a boned bustier, balconette, push-up, or seamless bra. One-shoulder – If you’ve chosen a one-shoulder dress, shop for a strapless or convertible bra. A convertible bra will give you a bit more support, as you can make use of one strap. Plunging neckline – If your dress has a v-neck or other type of plunging neckline, choose a balconette, plunge, or push-up bra. Get professionally fitted – This is especially important if you’ve never been fitted before. Visit a specialty boutique, online retailer or the lingerie section of a department store. Each of these places have women on staff who can help you get the right fit. They’ll measure: Band size – This is done by wrapping a measuring tape under your arms, over the middle of your chest. Alternatively, they may wrap the tape across your rib cage. If the number is odd, it will be rounded up to the next even number. Cup size – To do this, they’ll measure around the fullest part of your chest while keeping the tape straight across your back. Subtracting the band measurement from the cup measurement will give you your cup size. For example, if your band measurement was 34 inches and your cup was 36, this indicates a B cup size. Do the “dance” test – Remember, it’s your wedding day so it’s likely you’ll be dancing into the night. While trying on the bra, jump up and down a bit, or even try dancing in the dressing room. It sounds silly, but you’ll be thankful for it later. Having comfortable and great-fitting lingerie on your wedding day is essential to your comfort. Keep in mind the above tips for a fantastic fit – and a fantastic wedding.
