Opening of new ST Store in Laren on the 29th of April... ST spreading out quickly. 8

Earlier this year, on a wintry day towards the end of February, I stepped into the elevator at Barneys New York, impatient to see the latest designer collections and suddenly found myself eye to eye with fashion’s biggest rising star - Victoria Beckham. Much to my astonishment, we were similarly dressed, and then, once we reached the first floor, both of us made a bee-line for the Louboutin corner to check out Christian’s latest goodies. For once I found it hard to stay focussed on the shoes, what with Queen Becks so close by, and realising I was probably starting to look like a total groupie, I decided to make my way to the second floor to check out Stella McCartney’s latest threads. Still in a bit of a daze at having been so close to one of today’s biggest fashion icons, I couldn’t stop thinking about her: I had always thought Victoria looked frightfully skinny and rather cold and aloof in her pictures, but in the flesh she was actually very pretty. Of course she was also impeccably dressed, wearing a fab fur cardigan and carrying a huge Birkin bag – the staple item of her iconic signature look. I was still daydreaming about her whilst meandering aimlessly between clothes racks and occasionally moving hangers from side to side, but not really paying much attention to the clothes, when I was surprised once again to find her standing next to me - eyeing up my outfit! I got another case of the nerves, quickly grabbed some hangers and handed them to the sales person, who had already been keeping a close eye on me for the past ten minutes as I drifted about. When he asked me for my size, I found myself lying and asking for a size ‘0’, knowing full well I hadn’t been able to fit into a size zero for over two years. What was wrong with me? Was I ashamed to ask for a size 2 in front of a super-skinny pop star-turned-fashion designer, or was this what fashion was doing to all of us nowadays? Once in the fitting room, I made several desperate attempts to squeeze into a non-stretch black mini dress, then finally gave up after 10 minutes and asked for a size 2. As Victoria walked into her fitting room to try on what seemed like at least 20 different dresses, I left and decided then and there that I would try to become Victoria Beckham for the cover of this edition of SuperTrash Magazine; it was a genuinely inspiring encounter! What impressed me the most was how effortlessly chic Victoria’s look is – many of the items from her collections do in fact wind up becoming my must-haves for the season. Actually attempting to become “Posh” on camera was a totally different matter: we ended up having to order 5 different wigs, all of which made me look nothing like her. The whole team had a blast trying to make it work though, and ultimately we all had to agree, Ms. Beckham’s act is a hard one to follow.

Behind the scenes

As we rub knees with the world’s greatest fashion editors, emails on SuperTrash Magazine’s upcoming production keep flooding my BlackBerry. The big summer issue is upon us. While the new autumn/winter collections 2010/2011 were being shown in New York, we were all well and truly immersed in summer’s little baubles, screening a veritable deluge of kaftans, iridescent sexiness and sunny destinations. Meanwhile, back in Holland, the editorial team were busily translating these ideas into concrete plans. We decided to do a city report on the current Cultural Capital of Europe: Istanbul. This ultra-trendy city has much to offer, from dining sky-high on lobster and scallops, to picking up a bracelet for under 10 Turkish Lire at the Grand Bazaar. We shot the Stenim Collection on the beach one icy-cold spring day, with the help of photographer Philip Riches. Philip and Paparazzi model Mandy managed to pull off a warm, sexy and summery vibe, despite the dreadful weather conditions. Jouke Bos helped us shoot The Edge Collection in the studio. The combined skills of Jouke and stylist Roel Schagen added international panache to the shoot. Top make-up artist Pernell conjured up three summery and uber-sexy looks for Veroniek, another Paparazzi model. In short, a summer issue that will really inspire you. Enjoy!

Stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Karl Lagerfeld, Sienna Miller, Doutzen Kroes, Live Tyler, Mario Testinio and Naomi Campell all turned up, dressed to the nines. Gap, who sponsored this year’s ball, collaborated with designers Sophie Theallet, Rodarte, Thakoon and Alexander Wang. The highlight of the night was a special performance by Lady Gaga. Our favourite red carpets looks were Kate Kudson in Stella McCartney, Sarah Jessica Parker in Halston Heritage and Fred Leighton and Gisele Bündchen in Alexander Wang. 16

rumours have been rife lately about Justin timberlake and Jessica Biel possibly breaking up. But these were swiftly dispelled when the couple were spotted together on the red carpet gala. the two looked happier and more gorgeous than ever, walking arm in arm and smiling besottedly at each other. the day before the couple was also spotted walking hand in hand in New York. could it be the two are happier than the media would have us believe?

victoria beckham pop star, designer, brand

After ten years of struggling to get a high-heeled foot into the fashion industry, Victoria Beckham has finally proven her critics wrong by presenting a hugely successful collection: “I know I came from a pop band and I’m married to a footballer, but I think the fashion biz has finally accepted me.”

S

o far, 2010 has been one of Victoria Beckham’s most successful years to date. In February she showed her fashion collection at New York Fashion Week. She has supposedly been asked to design a brand new luxury hotel with Karl Lagerfeld on a fashion-themed isle off Dubai. She will soon be collaborating with the producers of the hit musical Mamma Mia on a new musical, Viva Forever, based on Spice Girls’ songs. Sarah Jessica Parker will be wearing one of the dresses from her spring/summer collection 2010 to the White House to meet Michelle Obama, and let’s not forget to mention that recently both Jennifer Lopez and Madonna have been spotted in Victoria’s clothes. So how exactly has all this come to pass? Victoria never went to college to study fashion, or anything else to do with clothes for that matter. The English newspaper The Times once ventured an explanation: “Beckham’s USP (Unique Selling Point) is that she is her customer. She knows when an internal power mesh is called for, or when a strong shoulder line passes from fashion statement into the ridiculous. It’s all flawlessly made.”

Right place, right time In truth, Victoria Adams has managed to succeed by combining a passion for fame, solid work ethics, and just enough talent, with 18

being in the right place at the right time. Growing up in Essex, England, little Victoria Adams had just one dream: to become one of the kids from Fame. The title of her autobiography, Learning to Fly (2001), refers to the lyrics from ‘Fame’ by Irene Cara, and in the book Victoria explains her childhood passion to become a dancer. And boy, did she become famous. The once geeky girl has managed to turn her relatively insignificant existence into a 225 million dollar industry. Not by turning pirouettes at the Bolshoi Ballet, mind you, as it soon became evident that her talent for dancing was mediocre at best. As for her singing skills, they were completely non-existent until 1994 when she responded to an add. A formerly little known artist manager named Simon Fuller – now famous for creating the Idol franchise - was looking for some girls to form an all-girl band and maybe, just maybe, score a few hits in response to the boy bands who were dominating the charts back in the nineties.

Cheese and crackers The musical roller-coaster that the Spice Girls instantly became, sprung from nowhere, just like her fashion career. After two years of being total nobodies, practising endlessly in a grubby studio in London with only cheese and crackers for dinner, the five girls

“I was the one Spice Girl who had less talent than a coconut.”

were eventually signed to Virgin records in 1996 and released their début single, Wannabe. The song shot to number one in 31 countries and their first album, Spice, sold more than 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a female group ever. Victoria had her own signature mark, as did the other four girls; hers was the dark bob, pouting mouth, little black dress and she always wore high-heels. The press soon dubbed her ‘Posh’, a nickname that has stuck. When she started dating David Beckham, one of England’s top football players, their fame sky-rocketed. Posh and Becks became Britain’s mock-royalty: In 1999, they got married sitting on pompous golden thrones with plush and purple velvet cushions, taking up residence on a 17 acre estate in Hertfordshire, or ‘Beckingham Palace’ as the tabloids dubbed it. Meanwhile the Beckhams continued to rake it in: they did numerous photo shoots and commercials together and their individual careers continued to flourish... But, though happy to be a mother, by now the time had come for Victoria to ‘go it alone’.

Match made in heaven Things were rocky for Posh at first when the Spice Girls called it quits in 2001, leaving the histrionics of the Spice Girls life behind

20

her and instantly labelled a WAG without a career. According to Victoria: “Over the years I had been so demoralized by always being told I was the useless one, the one Spice Girl who had less talent than a coconut; I never had the confidence to think about a solo singing career.” In 2000 she released her first and easily forgettable solo single, Out of your Mind. For years she struggled to make it in the music business, but like most of her fellow Spicettes, she didn’t quite get there. Meanwhile, Vee was also focusing on fashion, and evidently this was a match made in heaven. In 2000 she won the ‘Best Dressed Female’ award at the Elle Style Awards and she made her first runway appearance as a model at London Fashion Week. Since then, she’s been the face of Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and roberto Cavalli, while her advertising act with David sent sales of Armani’s underwear through the roof. And while the other Spice Girls have gradually disappeared off the radar, Victoria, like a phoenix, has slowly but surely worked her way up as a designer. “I’ve always been driven,” said Victoria in an interview. “I was mentally and physically bullied when I was at school and that gave me a very thick skin… I have always had to work very, very hard with everything I do. That’s just me. That’s my DNA.”

Who do you think you are? In 2004 Victoria designed a limited-edition line for rock & republic called VB rocks, consisting mainly of jeans for the high-end of the market, retailing at a whopping 300 dollars each. She admitted that her music days were over and that she would be focusing on a career in fashion. Hearing the news, most people could barely suppress a smile: Posh a designer? Who does she think she is? But, slowly, things started to change. For the March 2006 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Victoria acted as fashion editor and styled her BFF Katie Holmes for a fashion shoot. She parted ways with rock & republic in 2006, furthering her fashion ventures when she launched her own denim label, dVb Style. She launched a his-and-hers fragrance line called ‘Intimately Beckham’ at the same time, followed by a range of sunglasses, handbags and jewellery. A minor bump in the

coverstory

road was that her denim line did not do so well and has subsequently been phased out by Saks Fifth Avenue. “I’m not going to lie, there have been teething problems along the way,” said Victoria of her dying brand. June 2008, however, was a turning point, when she presented a range of evening gowns during New York Fashion Week that went down a storm. Besides that, within a space of 12 months she got to be on three Vogue covers (the British, Indian and russian editions). When Victoria’s dress collection went on sale at net-a-porter.com, it sold out within minutes. And Selfridges in London and Manchester sold out her entire collection in a day. And we’re not talking LBD’s for a tenner; these frocks range from a staggering 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a piece. Marc Jacobs acknowledges her drive: “She is someone who has always wanted to design clothes. She knows the body, she loves it and she’s working her ass off.”

Selling like hot cakes recently Victoria has shipped all of her brands to her new label: Victoria Beckham. “After the success of the dress collection, it just seemed like a natural progression to really take control. Everything is now under Victoria Beckham. dVb is no more. Everything is different.” Indeed, everything is different. Ten years ago Victoria was known as a Spice Girl with a rich footballer husband and an eternal pout, now she is an internationally acclaimed fashion designer (the pout lingers on though). Much to everyone’s surprise, even the harshest of critics are eating their words. Says The Times about Victoria’s work: “They’re glam, Victoria’s frocks, they sell like

“I have always had to work very, very hard with everything I do. That’s just me. That’s my DNA.” hot cakes, despite costing as much as Givenchy et al. Fashion editors like them, almost despite themselves. Victoria Beckham – who knew?” And Style.com, hardly the least of the critical bunch agreed: “You almost forget that she was once a pop superstar. There wasn’t one bad dress in the bunch.” Industry sources estimate the Victoria Beckham dress, denim and sunglasses business will ring up $7.5 million in sales next year. As for VB herself? She’s already moving forward, as there’s more to create, more to design. And as for her Spice Girls’ past – and more notably the reunion of the Fab Five in 2008 – Victoria says: “I just did the reunion tour to show my kids that their mum used to be a good fake pop mimer once. I’m not in the music industry anymore. I’m in the credit card fashion shopping industry.” Hear, hear 

Vee Bee on teeVee When looking at pictures of Victoria in magazines one would think that she was born with a seriously grumpy personality. “I used to get so nervous, and when I got on the red carpet, I’d freeze up,” explaining her moody pout in Harper’s Bazaar. Few people know, however, that Victoria does in fact have a great sense of humour. Proof of that comes from her hilarious one hour documentary Victoria Beckham: Coming to America, which documented her move to the USA in 2007. SuperTrash, July 24th 2010, Amsterdam Fashion Week During Amsterdam Fashion Week, in front of a room packed full of SuperTrash fans, we presented our summer collection, which is now available in stores and retailers. The SS10 collection has three central themes: Animal Jungle, Blossom and Kaleidoscope. The new summer line once again exudes a very glamorous feel, which is actually quite un-Dutch-like, but oh-so SuperTrash: The collection is a veritable explosion of vivid, bright colours and original Kaleidoscope prints, with semi see-through kaftans, draped dresses and smooth tops taking centre stage. And let’s not forget to mention harem pants – they are the ultimate comfy but chic must-have for summer. Getting a collection ready for the catwalk takes a lot of preparation: Once the clothes have been designed, the right models need to be picked and someone needs to choreograph the show and select the right music. But even if you’re well prepared and working with a top team, there’s always a sense of tension backstage, especially just moments before the show starts. And that’s a good thing, as the pressure makes everyone perform even better. Backstage, a team of nearly 50 people (made up of stylists, hairdressers, models and make-up artists) worked their asses off to transform the beautiful models into veritable SuperTrash-vamps. It was their job to show the new SuperTrash-looks off to their best advantage on the catwalk. And boy did they manage to pull it off on the day! 53

When fashion Valhalla’s such as the luxury retail department store Nieman Marcus started advertising with copy like ‘Ooh la la for not a lot of moo la la’ and American Vogue’s queen Anna Wintour called on designers to come up with crisis-proof Christmas frocks last year, there was no more hiding from the truth: the fashion industry was in deep trouble.

T

he gut-crunching financial news magically coincided with the autumn fashion weeks, presenting all the looks for the following summer. Everyone was trying to read the collections, keen to spot the industry’s answer to the global recession. Would we indeed be wearing stapled grey uniforms and screaming ‘NO’ like Viktor & Rolf had suggested in their previous fallwinter collection? Had the look Marc Jacobs presented for the summer of 2009 been inspired by the Great Depression of the 30s, as New York Times Fashion Editor Cathy Horyn pointed out that gloomy September? Like any other business or creative discipline, the fashion industry suffered dramatically, and a large part of it is still in excruciating pain following the massive financial crisis that officially hit the world towards the end

of 2008. However the fashion business has once again proven to be a somewhat erratic beast. Its natural regenerative powers have gone into overdrive, proving that is quite possible to ‘suffer in style’. In a sense, in these leanest of times, fashion has shown us just how fabulous and crazy a species we human beings really are.

The deeper the shit, the higher the heels One would think that, when our collective sense of financial security comes crumbling down like it did, people, women in this case, would intuitively seek a firmer stance in life, by lacing themselves up in sturdy army boots for example. It just so happened women around the globe suddenly started craving quite the opposite. By 2008 heels, aided and abetted by the fad for platform soles, had already resurfaced onto the fashion scene. Jimmy Choo lead the pack, and the trends continues to date; many regard Alexander

McQueen’s lobster-claw shaped ‘Armadillo’ shoes from his Spring-Summer 2010 show as the climax of this mind-boggling trend. The late Alexander McQueen’s 8-inch elevated Armadillo heels never made it to the streets, nor were they intended to, but the fetish for 8-inches did. Over the past two years Christian Louboutin, for instance, raised his stilettos to 7 inches and eventually even produced some 8-inch shoes, just to see how far he could push the limits of keeping one’s balance. Should this be seen as another example of catwalk glamour penetrating real life, or as some shoeaholics believe, a clear case of ‘designing pure prozac for the feet’? Most fashionistas would agree that though wearing heels may be painful sometimes, they do generally make most women look and feel better; a woman in heels automatically throws out her chest and bottom and is forced to to keep herself poised at all times. And following that same train of thought, why do you think handbags have tripled in size? That’s where

fashionable women stow their flat shoes or ballerina’s in case there’s some real walking to be done.

When the going gets tough, the tough dress up. Scientists who give credence to kondratieff ’s famous economic long-wave cycle theory are convinced that crises are great for creativity and innovation. Apparently, when the going gets tough, we crave luxury. So while the shiniest and loudest in the ‘bling’ industries will automatically suffer most from an economical downturn, creative people and consumers alike suddenly start to develop a more cut-throat taste for fashion, and acquire an heightened sense of what the real blood and bones stuff out there ought to be. It may be some kind of survival mechanism but translated to fashion it means it’s time to seriously dress-up. Some say that fashion designers should consult stock market gurus before plunging

Coco Chanel: “Fashion is not only in dresses; fashion is in the air, brought by the wind, one feels it coming, one breaths it in, it is in the sky and on the street, it is everywhere.” into the creative process of designing a new collection with their team. Of course, if they work for one of the big luxury holdings, or global fashion brands, they are quite likely to hear more than their fair share of facts and figures and prognoses, and more than likely to receive some directional input from their directors. But fashion designers on the whole are more akin to artists, creative visionaries driven by gut feelings and other muses generally not expressed in spreadsheets. To give a more concrete example of this line of thought, it’s quite reasonable to assume that when couturier Christian Dior introduced his infamous New Look so shortly after WWII in his

1947 Corolle collection, he did not first sit down and coldly calculate how fabulously decadent his label would seem if he could just waste as much fabric as possible. At the time it was considered very decadent given the dire economic circumstances, and for a brief moment the world was genuinely outraged. It’s more than likely however, that this was quite simply Mr. Dior’s unique vision on beauty at that moment in time and he would later defend the look in his memoires, calling it a ‘return to the art of seduction’. More importantly, at the time it struck a resounding chord with women both sides of the Atlantic. In fact the look wasn’t actually all that new. Coco Chanel 63

SHOPPING The neighbourhoods Cihangir and Çukurcuma are the most trendy places in Istanbul. Nowadays they attract a new generation of bohemians; Çukurcuma is often referred to as the ‘SoHo of Istanbul’. It’s a mix of nationalities: Jews, Armenians, Italian, French and Muslims all live here; the area is a thriving, cosmopolitan meltingpot. In recent years elegant art galleries and design emporiums have started rubbing shoulders with the old junk shops within its narrow, twisting alleys. Istiklal Cadessi, one of Çukurcuma’s most popular streets, is the best place to start your shopping expedition. Here you will find stores such as TopShop, Accessorize and Mango. But strolling through the neighbourhood, you will also find a lot of great boutiques, interspersed with designer stores and plenty of great places to have a decent meal. The district of Cihangir is located nearby. In the beginning of the nineties professionals, artists and journalists began flocking to the neighbourhood. Today, Cihangir maintains its friendly, small town vibe; it’s full of family-run stores and cafés offering. Take Inbak (Murat Aksoy, Agamam Sot. No. 11 A) for example, a perfect stop for getting a coffee in the morning, or

Istanbul is best enjoyed in the summer, when the weather is warm and the cocktails are cold. Today, this ancient metropolis, spread over two continents, spanning seven hills and filled with twenty million people, remains a fascinating city of contrasts.

49 coffee and shop (Turnacıbaşı Cad. No. 49), another good place to drink tea, or have lunch. And if you enjoy browsing flea markets, this is the place to go in search of fun gadgets. There are also a lot of antique shops and vintage boutiques. One of them is Mozk (Kuloglu Mh. Altipatlar Sk. No. 10). If you’re lucky you might just score a nice designer bag or some new sunglasses. But for those of you who are ready for some real shopping, and looking for everything from designer labels to quirky, individual pieces, head for Nişantaşi! It’s the place to be for Istanbul’s savvy fashionistas and society’s new elite and you can quite easily shoptill-you-drop. You should definitely take in Abdi Ipekçi Caddesi, the shopping boulevard in town and Tesvikiye Avenue. Shopaholics can flex their plastic in the endless array of designer boutiques and luxury stores. The street is filled with luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Cartier, Escada and Tiffany & Co. This is also where the Turkish department store Vakko is located (Abdi İpekçi Cad. No. 38). It stocks Mulberry, Kenzo and Jimmy Choo to name but a few. The fashion superstore Beymen Nisantasi is another must (Abdi İpekçi Cad. No. 23). It covers 3,500 square meters and

“If the earth was a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.” Napoleon Bonaparte is spread over seven floors. Patrizia Pepe and Pinko are a tad more affordable, and rank amongst our favourite labels, and their beautiful shops are also located on this shopping street (No. 16/3). It’s like stepping into a candy-store: try walking out without a new item, it’s almost impossible… Another boutique you won’t want to miss is V2KDesigners (Abdi İpekçi Cad. No. 31); it’s a new shopping destination for those in search of slightly more individual, cosmopolitan styles. Be it boho or rock-chic, the store takes its inspiration from the streets of New York, London, Milan and Paris instead of their runways. They’ve got all the great and upcoming designer brands such as Alexander Wang, Erdem, Christopher Kane, American Retro, Acne, 6126 by Lindsay Lohan, and so on. The Alexander McQueen shop (Abdi Ipekçi Cad. No. 21) is worth a special visit. Here you can find his latest creations including those he designed just before he passed away. The price tags at Abdi Ipekçi Caddesi are alarming high, so if you’re strapped for cash, window shopping may be as close as you get to these little gems... If so, the street that runs parallel to, Tesvikiye Avenue, might be a better place to head for. This is where shops such as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Marks & Spencer, G.A.P and

Uterqüe can be found. The latter is a true shopping Walhalla! It’s a Spanish store with quite a lot of beautiful and trendy bags, shoes, clothes and accessories. For those desiring a more cultural experience, the Nişantaşi-district also boasts some of the city’s best art galleries. Walk down towards the Bosphorus, to the corner of the W Hotel, where the streets Sair Nedim Caddesi and Suleyman Seba Caddesi cross each other; this street has recently had a face-lift and is very popular with well-to-do visitors. Here you can find designer shops like Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, DSquared2, Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Armani. If it is a rainy day and you’ve not yet had your fill of shopping, Kanyon is a fun way to while away some time. It’s a large shopping mall jam-packed with shops. Take Yeşil, a nice Turkish shoe shop, with even nicer price tags – and be sure to check out their bags too! The famous English department store Harvey Nichols is also located in this shopping mall. They stock all the designer brands, such as Balenciaga, Martin Margiela, Costume National, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg, and they also have a great shoe department, selling all the major designers. And if you’re looking for a place for a quick lunch, we recommend Gina, Kitchinette and The House Café. A

little bit further away and less upmarket, but with tons of shops, lies Istinye Park (Istinye Bayiri Cad. 34460): Benetton, D & G, M.A.C., Sephora, Accessorize, Mango, G-Star, Diesel, Burberry, Hugo Boss, DKNY, Jimmy Choo, Etro, Miu Miu and Gianfranco Ferre can all be found here. When it comes to buying souvenirs, the Grand Bazaar, with its vast selection of carpets, clothing, and jewellery, is definitely the place to head for. It’s a very touristy, located in the same neighbourhood as the famous Blue Mosque and the AyaSofia, but aside from souvenirs and mosques, this district has little to offer. LUNCH BREAK Nişantaşi is not only the best shopping district in Istanbul, there are a lot of good places where you can have a coffee to perk you up, or else stop for lunch at one of the popular cafés and restaurants that line the district’s trendy street. This is one of the best area’s to crowd-watch on one of the terraces and you may well bump into a celebrity or model sipping a mineral water or nibbling on a salad. Beymen Brasserie is located on the ground floor of fashion superstore Beymen Nisantasi, and the perfect place to stop for an espresso. For those of you with a sweet tooth, Mavi is where it’s at! They sell delicious patisserie here, and the place is a favoured by Istanbul’s jet set. The House Café is another perfect place for a coffee or light lunch. They serve comfort food and possibly the best coffee in town. The café is busy all day long. A little bit further, walking towards the Bosphorus, the W Hotel has just opened a new lunch spot, W Kitchen. Be sure to order the shrimp salad if you’re having lunch there, it’s divine! Another spot worth mentioning is The Istanbul Modern Café (Meclis-I Mebusan Cad. No. 4), located inside the Modern Museum by the river. Its exquisite waterfront views and stylish industrial-chic décor make it the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing meal. Hook up for 72

a late breakfast, lunch, dinner or an evening meal; they serve a wide selection of salads, pasta, risotto, sandwiches , grilled meats and fish. WINE AND DINE Turkey is considered to have one of the world’s best cuisines, so it comes as no surprise that there are a lot of good restaurants in Istanbul. In fact, there are too many to mention. Here are a few hot spots you definitively have to visit when you are there: If you’re still in the Nişantaşi-district, make sure to have a drink at Beyman Brasserie. If the weather is good, head for the terrace; it’s great for crowd-watching and they serve great cocktails. If you also want to have dinner over here, be sure to make a reservation! Or else dine at Long Table, just around the corner (The Sofa Hotel Teşvikiye Cad. No. 123). This stylish restaurant is located within the Sofa Hotel. The menu contains Turkish favourites with a twist. In the evenings it offers live soul music and it employs a Dutch singer who plays Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross tunes on a white piano. The city of Istanbul is full of rooftop restaurants and places with views of the Bosphorus. One of the most beautiful hilltop locations in town is Mikla (Mesrutiyet Cad. No. 167 / 185). Dining at this restaurant is like sitting on top of the world. Situated on the top floor of the 18 story Marmara Pera Hotel, Mikla has a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of Istanbul. The atmosphere is strictly first class: modern décor, a stylish crowd and a DJ playing in the background. The menu is divine: figs with prosciutto and gorgonzola, lamb entrecôte with apricot comfit or porcini risotto. The wine-list is extensive, featuring gems from Turkey and the rest of the world. Definitely a place that belongs to the upper echelon of Istanbul restaurants.

Restaurant Ulus 29 (Kireçhane Sokak No. 1) is another of the city’s finest restaurants. The setting is breathtaking: hilltop location and views of the Bosphorus behind floor-to-ceiling windows. The food is a mixture of French, Japanese, Italian and Turkish cuisines. Yum! Still not tired? Why not dance the night away at Club 29 next door. Istanbul’s nightclubs may come and go, but after 15 years, Club 29 is still one of the world’s trendiest and most popular nightclubs. Vogue (Spor Cad. BJK Plaza A Blok No. 48) is also one of the city’s most popular restaurant-bars. Whatever the season, Vogue is always crowded with jet setters, due to its global cuisine, the amazing sushi bar, its famed wine list and delicious cocktail bar. Sipping a Mojito on the terrace at sunset, live DJ music playing in the background, helps set the scene for a perfect evening in Istanbul. Thursday nights are especially hip and happening. This trendy place is located in the penthouse suite on the top floor of Besiktas Plaza and has stunning views of the Bosphorus. It’s best enjoyed in the summer, when the weather is warm and the cocktails are at their most refreshing served on the terrace. If you are looking for a more romantic setting, head for the Sunset Grill & Bar (Adnan Saygun Cad., Yol Sokak No. 2, Ulus park), located amongst the hills of Ulus. You’ll find one of the greatest views of Istanbul here, overlooking the Bosphorus and the glittering lights below. Due its lush romantic setting, this restaurant is wellknown for proposing to your loved one. The restaurant has a large menu and is renowned for its vast wine cellar. The food is excellent; a mixture of international cuisine, terrific sushi and Turkish dishes. The best place to have a drink, or have dinner is on the terrace outside… This spot creates a spectacular dining experience and you really feel like you’re on holiday! Topaz (Inonu Cad. No. 50) is another nice place to go for dinner. This is quite a chic restaurant with breathtaking views, and in summer they’ve got an amazing terrace outside. It serves as a restaurant, lounge and bar, not only at night, but also at lunchtime. The menu is a mix of extraordinary Mediterranean and Turkish flavours. An

evening spent at ‘Tapas a la Topaz,’ the bar and lounge section, definitely helps you unwind. Located halfway along the shopping street İstiklal Caddesi, lies 360 Istanbul (İstiklal Cad. Misir Apt. Floor 8, No. 32 / 309), another rooftop restaurant. It’s a little bit more touristy and commercial, but worth a visit. Not for the food – that’s good, but not great – but for the spectacular panoramic views of the city. After dinner it becomes a nightclub with regular DJs and live music. On a cool summer’s eve, it’s one of the best places to be. If you want to eat there, make sure to make a reservation; it’s packed every night of the week. Looking for a more groovy but unpretentious rooftop experience? Why not go to Leb-I Derya (Kumbaracı Yokușu No. 57/6). Consider going for Sunday breakfast, so you can enjoy the fab Bosphorus views in daylight. For Japanese food, you definitely need to go to Zuma (Salhane Sk. No. 7). It offers one of the best traditional Japanese eating and drinking experiences in town! Another one to recommend, and one that has a totally different atmosphere, is Cezayir (Hayriye Cad. No. 16). The sumptuous bar and restaurant are housed in a 106-year-old Italian schoolhouse, in the middle of Galatasaray. The baroque silver and white dining room is stunning; there’s a long wooden bar and a lounge with large mirrors and sofas, and a garden at the back. Besides the delicious food, late at night the bar’s atmosphere is great. Located in the artistic district Cihangir, lies 5. Kat (Soğanci Sokak No. 7); located on the 5th floor and run by the glamourous red-haired film actress Yasemin Alkaya, 5. Kat is one of the city’s original glamour bars. You feel like you’re spending time in someone’s living room. The bohemian atmosphere in combination with the menu – offering dishes from India, Thailand, Cambodia, Turkey and Italy – make this place unique. The ‘boudoir chic’ décor features deep red walls, purple satin ceiling, velvet chairs and baroque candles – it’s amusingly over the top. The best time of year to enjoy this eclectic restaurant, is on a calm summer evening, as the views from the terrace are truly breathtaking. On Wednesday evenings, you can relax at the W Lounge (Süleyman Seba Cad. No. 22), in the W Bosphorus Bridge by night

Hotel-lobby. It is the place to be…Here you can enjoy the cool DJ mixes, a delectable snack, or a libation from the colourful cocktail list. SWEET DREAMS There is something for everyone to be found in Istanbul, so you’re sure to find the hotel of your dreams here too. For those who prefer a little pampering, suitable suites can be found at the Grande Dame hotels lining the Taksim - Nişantaşi route, across the Bosphorus. The five star Cirağan Palace Hotel (Ciragan Cad. No. 32) for example, truly pampers its guests. If you like history, you should definitely sleep at The Bosphorus Palace Hotel ( Yaliboyu Cad. No. 64). This was once an historic palace located on the shore of the Bosphorus that’s since been converted into a beautiful boutique hotel. The hotel has 14 rooms, each decorated in the classic Ottoman style with opulent details, such as gilt bed frames and mirrors. James Brown and the original James Bond both spent the night in one of the rooms; knowing of that might add an extra dimension to your stay. If boutique hotels are what you like, we can recommend a few nice ones in the city. Witt Istanbul Hotel (Defterdar Yokusu No. 26) for example, located in Cihangir is the city’s newest, most sophisticated boutique hotel. It’s a luxury design boutique hotel in the heart of Istanbul with 18 suites. Award-winning Istanbulbased designers Autoban have filled the suites with their unique, edgy furnishings. As part of the package guests receive a Turkish breakfast buffet each morning. Home-made jams, fresh cakes, and freshly squeezed orange or pomegranate juice are amongst the house specialities. Witt is a luxury hotel without the usual price tag. Despite the indulgent touches and cutting edge interiors, this is the kind of hotel where you can stay in a spacious suite for the price of a regular hotel room. Another nice boutique hotel Beyoglu is The House Apart (Firuzağa Mahallesi, Bostanbaşı Cad. No.19). The House Hotel Ciragan Palace

city story

This newly opened, nicely priced hotel is located in an old, renovated building, that was originally built in 1850 and has only 20 suites and a very cosy bar on the top floor. SUMMERTIME And if you go to Istanbul in summer, then the charming Sumahan Hotel (Kuleli Cad. No. 51) is one of the best places to sleep. This elegant boutique hotel with 20 rooms and suites, is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, on the waterfront of the Bosphorus, a true haven of tranquillity and luxury. It’s the perfect place to relax after day’s shopping. The lodgings are exquisitely modern, the loft suites are simply top-notch, with elevated sleeping areas and private Hamam. Smart guests visit the hotel’s Wellness Spa after a long day’s trekking. The luxurious Hamam (Turkish-style bath) elevates bathing to an art. Step inside for a brisk scrub followed by a foam massage to ease stress from tired muscles. Finish off the experience with a glass of mintinfused water, leaving you refreshed and ready for a fabulous evening. Bebek is one of the nicest neighbourhoods on the Bosphorus, and becomes quite crowded on sunny weekends. It feels like you’re walking in a little village within the big city. This fine area is full of expensive waterside apartments; there’s a small bay where yachts are anchored, nice little boutiques and fancy restaurants. It doesn’t matter what time of the day you come over here, there’s always plenty to enjoy! Start the day at the unpretentious Bebek Kavhesi (Rumeli Hisari Caddesi); celebs abound, yet nobody seems to notice all the actors and pop stars. There’s also a wonderful sunny terrace at the back. We recommend you try ‘naneli lemon’ (lemon juice with fresh mint). Take lunch at Happily ever after (Cevdet Pasa Cad. No. 24), a charming place with an extensive menu and delicious home-made cakes. Diagonally opposite lies Lucca (Cevdet Pasa Cad. No. 51 B), another great lunch spot. The décor is pleasant: white chairs and great artwork, and it features a long bar. The menu features salads, Harbor at Bebek

sushi, pastas and many other options. Do not miss the impressive weekend brunch. At night this lunch spot transforms into a trendy café, where all the beautiful people gather together. It’s the most happening place in Bebek. The bar is packed almost every night of the week, with regulars coming in every night. The music is loud, the bar is hip and the drinks are strong and eclectic. Besides Bebek, summertime is definitely the season for beachclub Suada (Eski Galatasaray Adasi). It’s the place where glamourous Istanbul convenes… It’s here the beautiful people come to sun themselves, sip on their cocktails, and nibble on the finest sushi and other delicious - low fat – finger food. Situated in the middle of the Bosphorus, with a 360 degree panoramic view, Suada is popular for its poolside parties on hot summer days. Another good place to go in summer is Anjelique (Muallim Naci Cad. Salhane Sokak No.5). Anjelique revels in its majestic view of the Bosphorus, something the mirrored interior only enhances. On the upper floors there’s a pleasant dining area, but most people come here to party. So you can start the evening here with a meal, soak up the views and as the sun sets it turns into a club. A nice little extra: you can dance into the early hours! Because of its cool, chill-out atmosphere the place attracts a young, super-rich crowd of models and the happy few… It’s packed after midnight! If you feel like more clubbing, you can dance the night away at club Reina (Muallim Naci Cad. No. 44). This summer club is one of the best in town. Its open-air dance floor offers stunning views of the Bosphorus; you couldn’t really ask for a more perfect end of the day. If you go there as evening falls, the setting sun is reflected in the glistening waters of the Bosphorus while the DJ plays relaxing music. Then all you have to do is to choose whether to dine on sushi, kebab or go for French cuisine. The place is packed with Turkish celebs, models, millionaires and journalists. The people that come here are the most fabulous crowd in town. Door policy is strict, so dress up smart!  Lucca

Enter the world of SuperTrash

Preparation began well over a year ago. ...,Staat creative agency came up with the concept behind the the stores: they were going to look like the ‘Ultimate Celebrity Walk-in Wardrobe’. For months on end life was all about materials, colour charts, blowups and floor-talk back at SuperTrash Headquarters. Should we opt for dark colours or light, go for subtlety, or be brash? Be black and mysterious, or white and inviting? Could we be raw and sexy, yet sophisticated and refined at the same time? Exactly how do you turn a successful brand into a shop? Finally, on Saturday April 17 SuperTrash owner Olcay Gulsen opened the first store, in a lavish opening ceremony that included much champagne popping and ribbon cutting. From the moment you step into the store, it looks, feels, tastes and smells like SuperTrash. Here’s hoping every woman entering the changing rooms – gorgeous SuperTrash garment in hand - will end up feeling like the independent, confident and sexy SuperTrash woman she really is. Cheers!

Feel at home and be inspired
