Concept
The aim of this project was to create a creative campus environment in close connection with the center of Aalborg. The challenge was to make a solution that could embrace the values of the study programs that frames the new design school in order to challenge and rethink the traditional composition of a creative, educational institution. Furthermore, the challenge was to implement and invite the public to interact and participate in different activities at the site, in order to develop and strengthen the physical and social composition of the area. Throughout the project phase the idea of a creative design school and its surrounding urban spaces has been developed in order to translate the traditional notion of a campus into a public space. The potentials and structural composition of the context have been analyzed, which has led to modern campus environment that implicates the notion of play in order to establish new and innovative meeting platforms, which allows knowledge exchange and interaction between different users of the site. The needs and physical layout of the creative educations have been clarified and has resulted in an active, playful and inviting area. Creativity and play have been fused and in between the crossing of different design fields and different users a new synergy arises. This synergy has been made visible in the structural organization of the University but also in the aesthetical expression of the University, the student houses and the urban spaces. The notion of push and pull, which arose from the concept of a simple child play, has been applied to the physical form in order to underline interaction zones, but the physical forms have been handled differently in accordance with the main purpose of the push and pull action. Based on the wish of creating more space for experience and interaction, the identified activity or play zones have been developed into more active meeting platforms. The activity zones have been developed individually in order to mark the different functions happening in and characterizing the different spaces. An idea catalogue of different temporary activities has been outlined, in order to emphasize examples and intentions in the different spaces. The straight line on the harbor front has been manipulated and dragged further into the center of the area. The break of the harbor should try to establish a stronger connection between passing dwellers and the activities of the area. The project concept “Go play! reflects first and foremost the playful interaction between the University users and urban dwellers. Furthermore, the new city campus is an expression of the established hybrid between play and learning, but also between the four education programs, between design and technology and lastly between campus and city.

The municipality of Aarhus has a strong vision for the development of Aarhus harbor. Already in 1999 a major master plan of the area was presented, but today a predominant part of the harbor is still in progress and large areas are still to be planned. However, as the municipality has applied for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017, the progress has been strongly increased and many new projects are now rising along the harbor front. Among these projects is a new library, a engineering school, a recreational harbor area, office buildings, student houses and a large number of apartment blocks. The harbor and the water has many potentials in terms of recreation, culture and play, but the municipality of Aarhus has only to some extend tried to exploit these aspects in the development of the area. As the city wishes to be selected as ECoC 2017, they have to think of other and more temporary methods and tools in order to present an inviting and inspirational environment along the entire harbor front by the end of 2016. This project focuses on a temporary master plan, activating the majority of Pier 3 from 2012 and until 2020. Today, Pier 3 accommodates Mols-linien (a ferry link) and holds a large area servicing as Container Park. In the 1999-master plan Mols-Linien are supposed to leave Pier 3 and move to a large area in the other end of the harbor, but due to a delay in the planning progress the ferry will not leave Pier 3 until 2020. This means that Mols-linien will still operate from Pier 3 in 2017, and consequently this area will stand apart from the rest. A strong vision in Aarhus is to connect the harbor and the city center. Many of the new activities are based on culture and creativity, but Navitas Park – Aarhus’ new school of engineering – will also play an important role. The rustic setting of the old harbor creates an interesting background for the unfolding of a more technological field. A curious thought is to see the result of a new collaboration between Mols-Linien and Navitas Park. In order to rebel against the rigid master plan from 1999, Navitas and Mols-Linien will create a new setting for a more offbeat area – an antipole to the old city center and the neat harbor front. Pier 3 will function as an urban laboratory testing and inventing new relations within knowledge, education, innovation and urban life. The user groups should span wide and attract a much broader audience than the café-latte segment that currently are the most distinct users of the new harbor area. Keeping the ferry at Pier 3 and incorporating it in the experiment seems to be an interesting thought. The ferry is a natural generator of tourism and many people already access this area of Aarhus on a daily basis. Therefore it becomes natural to start a new process at Pier 3, as new interventions are quickly displayed to a big and wide range of people. Due to the constant flow of people on Pier 3, it will also become easier to attract people from the city center. An urban catalyst kiosk – pavilion – has been designed and should be used as an initial tool in order to indicate that something is going to change at Pier 3. The design has been inspired by a cocoon - which is the stadium just before giving life to a new creature. The stairs going through the building is the cocoons larva, and leads the visitor through the pavilion.

Aalborg harbor front has currently been undergoing a cultural development, changing from an old industrial area into an innovative and creative cluster of activities. Recently the Utzon Center and Nordkraft have been added to the harbor front, while a new music house and a campus for Architecture & Design are still in progress. This interesting development leaves the blank harbor front as a potential center of play, interaction, spontaneous meetings and creative activities. The project task was to design a hybrid spot floating in the water with the ability to link the different functions of the harbor front. The harbor has many potentials but one should not limit the project to the harbor front, but should also see the water as an equal opportunity in terms of developing new concepts and spaces. This project takes it starting point in the wish to connect the harbor and the water. The Cross is a floating platform that holds a small cafĂŠ and a gallery which displays different student projects throughout the year. The idea is to create a center for the creative cluster, inviting students, teachers, and others to meet and interact. The platform challenges the relationship between public and private as the roof of the gallery and the platform itself ha a public and inviting character. On the other hand, the gallery, the cafĂŠ and the roof of the cafĂŠ has a more private character, where one chooses to take part of the activities of others or not. The platform balances between public and private, as the sun chairs integrated in the stairs on the platform creates more intimate spots on the deck. The chairs invite people to a more long termed stay enjoying the view of the Limfjord. Seen from the other side of the fjord the platform appears as a two light plans floating on top of each other. One plan represents the harbor while the other represents the water. In order to accentuate the concept and the meeting between water and harbor, the building volumes are constructed with large glass facades. The glass facades underline the lightness of the platform and provide visitors inside with a view of the fjord.

The aim of this project was to create a new metro station at Nørrebro in regards to the new City Circle Line in Copenhagen. The challenge was to make a solution that could embrace the needs of a contemporary transit systems and the layer of social geography, in order to invite both passengers and inhabitants to interact. Furthermore the challenge of economic and social growth lay within the potentials and the problems of the district, which had to be combined in a common vision in order to strengthen the composition of the existing area. Common for all aspects of the project development from analysis to design was to work with scale plus the spatial and conceptual considerations. Throughout the project the idea of a transit space and its surrounding urban space has been develop, in order to transform the usual function of a transit station into a public space. The potentials and structural composition of the context have been analyzed, which has resulted in a modern transit station that relates to all users of the station whether they are a part of the stations layer of flow or identity. The needs and activities of the users have been clarified, which has resulted in an active and inviting area. Flow and culture have been fused and in between the meeting of different users a new synergy arises. This synergy has been made visible through new collaborations and through new, physical activities and experiences. In order to accommodate the increasing passenger flow and the needs of the identity layer a new building structure has additionally been constructed. This new building structure embraces the many needs of the area while still being in connection with the surrounding area. Based on the wish of creating more space for human relations, the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists have been brought into focus. Nørrebrogade has been shut down in connection with car traffic allowing only busses, pedestrians and bicyclists to pass directly through the area. This contributes to underline the areas new qualities and sensuous experiences, A contrasting area with space for experience and new dynamics has been made possible. However, flow and cultural activities must be considered as the area’s most dominant features which thus come to expression both above and below ground.

Minor project – individual work Later exhibited in collaboration with PhD student Ditte Bendix Laang in connection with her PhD project “Mapping, Organizing and Designing Mobility of the Suburb”
Location
Aalborg East, Denmark
Concept
The problem in this minor project was to conduct an analysis and mapping in a suburb of Aalborg. The mapping was narrowed to a bicycle path running through a residential area and passing through a tunnel underneath a busy main road. The stretch selected starts and ends by the passing of two speed bumps on the bicycle path – one before and one after the tunnel. The bicycle path seems incoherent and as a bicyclist it is hard to read the meaning of the speed bumps. The surrounding area does not orientate towards the path which creates a closed passage and this expression is merely further enhanced by the tunnel. The tunnel’s immediate function is to ensure access between to intersected areas, but instead it appears as a dismissive and unsafe barrier. With the intention of redesigning the area, the primary focus should be put on the tunnel and how the space underneath the road can be redeveloped into an attractive urban space rather than an insignificant gap. Thereby both physical and social potentials in the area will be strengthened. In order to implement changes and convert the physical reading of the tunnel, it is essential to add new programs and functions that will reinforce the positive qualities of the tunnel. Based on the wish to strengthen the physical and social bonds between the northern and southern side of the main road, it is important to create activity that encourages interaction and connection. This can for example be markets, concerts, exhibitions and the like. A reference to similar projects is the High Line, New York. In addition, it is also important to work with lighting conditions and a “shared space” that can create more awareness concerning the flow of pedestrians and bicyclists on the path.

Haderslev, Denmark
Concept
Haderslev is located in the southern part of Denmark between the Triangle Region and the German border, which are two important suppliers of job and education opportunities. Compared to Germany and the Triangle Region the housing prices in Haderslev are fairly low, and so many people choose to live Haderslev but to work someplace else where the opportunities and wages are better. Consequently, the municipality of Haderslev has realized that they need to strengthen the town’s position as a place of living. Cultural heritage and the town’s historic background play important roles in relation to the identity of the city and should therefore be essential elements in the branding of Haderslev, but the new neighborhood rising on the harbor should also be taken into consideration. The site in Haderslev is located close to the city center and the new harbor front. Today the area houses an agricultural machine dealer, but history reveals that an old fortress used to be located on this specific site. With reference to the historic fortress in Haderslev, it is the vision to change the areas closed character into a positive quality. The areas outer walls should be considered as a protecting layer that shields and hides a dense and intimate city. Narrow streets and hidden backyards underline the intimate atmosphere and provide the area with a new sense of comfort and community. In the center of the area s fortress rises and creates a different but interesting parallel between the modern and the historic context. Shiny facades with a transparent and inviting expression create a dynamic space with the opportunity for spontaneous interaction between activities inside and outside. As a contrast to the modern expression of the fortress, the area is surrounded by a green park. The park defines and marks the transition from private to a more public zone while also creating a green lung within the city. Behind the walls of the fortress is the areas dynamic and cultural center. This is where different users and new programs meet and interact. The areas permanent activities form the walls of the fortress, while the open space inside the fortress frames an urban scene where different spontaneous and temporary activities unfolds. The fortress should be Haderslev’s new cultural center that creates an alternative gap in the city evolving around life, culture, adventure and urban activities. New relations are formed and the distance between Haderslev’s historic center and new harbor is minimized.

Concept
The problem in this project was to create a master plan for an industrial area in the outskirts of Silkeborg. Currently, the expansion of the regional infrastructure in Denmark is of great importance, and the construction of expressways is developing fast. In Silkeborg the new expressway will be intersecting an existing industrial area which is why a new plan for the area is necessary. The vision for the area is to create an urban area that interacts with the expressway so that both the city and the expressway can benefit from each other’s qualities. Visually and symbolically the area must be displayed to the bypassing travelers on the express way, so one will get the feel of the life that characterizes the city and the area. This life, in interaction with the speed and intensity of the expressway, must attract the bypassing travelers and create an interest for the activities in Silkeborg. The city surrounding the expressway must brand Silkeborg and the business community in Silkeborg. Conversely, the express way must also influence Silkeborg. Speed and movement will be used as a source of inspiration in order to create more life and different activities in the area. The scale is smaller compared to the scale along the expressway and so is the flow of traffic and choice of transportation mode. Cars, pedestrians and bicyclists interweaves, which gives a gives a different kind of experience. Green and recreational spaces must spring up between buildings and create a new fusion between industry, art, culture and other urban activities. Common for both the expressway and the industrial area in Silkeborg is that both are able to transform the weight and great volume of the area into a series of positive experiences for the users. Life, experience and activity are the driving elements that create a different contrast and utilization of the relation between city and transportation.

Concept:
The underlying problem of this semester was to work within the cross field between architecture and urban design. The specific task was to design a hostel and a new master plan for a large area in the center of Aalborg. Aalborg is currently the fourth largest city in Denmark – a city characterized by the industrial growth that has been the foundation of Aalborg’s existents for several years. However, many cultural offers and small quarters have begun to thrive and influence the values end pleasures in downtown Aalborg. Art, culture, charisma and atmosphere are essential keywords in Aalborg which should all be implemented in the new vision for the Hospital North area. The Medina – a charming Latin quarter located in the area between Reberbansgade, Urbansgade, Holdbergsgade and Jens Bangs Gade – is placed in close connection with the old Hospital North area. The expression “Medina” means “a city within the city” which seems particularly interesting in connection with a restructuring and redesign of the area. Today, the Hospital North is isolated from the rest of the city – first and foremost because of the intersecting railroad, but also because of the massive Hospital construction that rises on the ground and separates the area from the rest of the city. The fact that the area of Hospital North is isolated from the rest of the city can immediately be considered as a disadvantage, but in connection with the Medina quarter, it can also be seen as an opportunity to expand the inner city structure. With reference to the Medina and the wish to preserve the intimate atmosphere and the cultural experience in the area, several problems seem to appear in connection with allowing more car traffic in the city center. Consequently, it is the vision to create a car free environment where the bicycle will be the preferred transportation vehicle. The founding of a smaller bicycle-city in the center of Aalborg will contribute to the preservation of the characteristic atmosphere, but it will also link the area to the rest of the city center. In the design of a new master plan, the main emphasis was put on the creation of different urban spaces and the serial experience one gets when travelling through the area – either by bike or by foot. Interaction is the most essential keyword that encourages citizens, tourists and others to act, play and engage themselves in the city. The design and concept of the hostel is based on the same vision as the one presented for the master plan. When renting a room at the new hostel, a free bicycle will be at disposal for all guests the entire stay.
