LISFE.NL 5TH ED.

FESTIVAL WEEK & OFFICIAL COMPETITION PROGRAMME

WELCOME TO LISFE 2013 Brace yourselves for the 5th edition of the Leiden International Short Film Experience (LISFE)! LISFE 2013 is on! This year we are proud to present a wider programme, including not only a large variety of short films, but also a series of special events all dedicated to the blending of film with other forms of art and culture. On top of the official competition day on Saturday 8 June, LISFE will be active in Leiden all week, starting from Saturday 1 June, with live cineconcerts, workshops, special evenings on architecture and innovation and more! All this has been made possible by LISFE’s collaboration with a number of Leiden-based organisations such as MIJN FOTOWERKPLAATS, RAP, OPEN Makers aan de Markt, the Kaasmarkt artists, Raamsteeg 2, Galerie de Pieter and internationally renowned organisations such as AFFR and GE FOCUS FORWARD films. Our goal is to mix as many different audiences as possible! Expats and locals, Dutch and international students, music and cinema lovers, contemporary art enthusiasts and people passionate about LI(S)FE in general. Everyone is welcome to watch, listen and feel the LISFE experience! –2–

LISFE – EXPERIENCE SHORT FILMS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD! LISFE is an annual festival held in the city of Leiden dedicated to the most original and creative form of filmmaking: short films! Since it first started in 2009, LISFE has presented more than 400 shorts from over 50 different countries to a crowd of more than 1000 film enthusiasts. The festival is organised by a very enthusiastic and hard-working team of volunteers that changes and expands every year. It is a mixed group of international people coming from different countries, including The Netherlands, who dedicate their time to creating LISFE aside their jobs or their studies. Every year a large number of short films is produced, yet only a few manage to make it to the big screen and to be enjoyed by a wider audience. LISFE is here to change all this! Short films are an often unappreciated form of filmmaking, yet creating a beautiful short is hardly as simple as it seems. With less screen time and, often, a smaller budget, directors must give their best to entertain their audience... a perfect recipe for quality! Over the past four years LISFE has offered a wide range of films, from works of fiction to documentaries and animated films, directed by professional and cinema/ media school student filmmakers alike. This has allowed our audience to discover internationally acclaimed works as well as short films by promising newcomers. The festival core is the official competition where the best professional and student films are awarded with special prizes given by a professional Jury and by the audience. So far we have given 15 awards to encourage and promote a new generation of filmmakers and we are looking forward to giving out many more in the future! –3–

FILM AND ART Location

Thursday & Friday 6 + 7 June: 17:30 – 19:30

The exhibition consists of installations, paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos, live theatre and performances often inspired by the LISFE films that address the question: “How can art function as a form of film, in terms of narrative or concept?”. During the exhibition opening on the 31st of May, the theatre company Fields of Wonder will make a special appearance.

ARCHITECTURE SPECIAL Location

RAP

Date & time Mon 3 June • 20:00 – 22:30 Admittance Free Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) is a biannual film festival which screens feature-length films, shorts, animations and documentaries about architecture, urban development and city culture. This year, under the wing of AFFR, LISFE dedicates a special night to these topics. Taking place at RAP, with the informal and open-minded format AFFR is known for, this event aims at bringing us all closer to architecture and its language, which is part of our daily lives, but often not consciously experienced. Wies Sanders, programmer of AFFR, will give an introduction, followed by the projection of a selection of short films from AFFR’s collection and a Q&A session. –5–

WORKSHOP CREATE YOUR SHORT PHOTO–FILM Location

MIJN FOTOWERKPLAATS

Date & time Tue 4 & Wed 5 June • 19:30 – 22:00 Admittance Free (max. 12 people) Take a peek behind the film screen! Over the course of two evenings, professional photographers at Mijnfotowerkplaats Marike Benschop and Jacqueline du Prie give you the key to photography-based filmmaking and the ingredients to create your own short film. Then on the 8th of June you can bring your friends and family to attend the première of your photo-based short film! –6–

CINECONCERTS Location

Vrijplaats

Date & time Wed 5 June • 20:00 – 23:00 Admittance ¤5,Cross-fertilization between film and music is not a new phenomenon. But what if you ask a musician to reinterpret a film by adding his personal composed or improvised soundtrack to it? Two artists have accepted our challenge: different interpretations, different sounds that will lead us in an alternative dimension of cinema. The results are surprising, and are performed live during LISFE at the Vrijplaats! Port Of Call, rising Dutch singer-songwriter performs an original work inspired by a LISFE short film. Carlos Roos, Europe-based Venezuelan multi-disciplinary artist and musician, offers a live soundtrack to the ground-breaking film “Man with a Movie Camera’ (Russia, 1929).

INNOVATION IN SHORT Location

Raamsteeg 2

Date & time Thu 6 June • 20:00 – 23:00 Admittance Free Short films are very often a unique place for innovation in today’s cinema. Therefore it feels natural to dedicate a whole evening to the theme of innovation at large. What is the place for innovation and how can we enable innovation in scientific research, art and humanities? Is there a place for new ideas and their implementation in our lives and in Leiden? These are the questions to be addressed by you and our invited panel of Leiden-based innovators during an evening of screenings, talks and debates. This special event takes place in the premises of a new and innovative location in Leiden, Raamsteeg 2 and is the fruit of a collaboration between LISFE and GE FOCUS FORWARD. GE FOCUS FORWARD has for motto: short films, big ideas. Come and enjoy a selection of three-minute stories about innovative people who are reshaping the world through action or invention.

LISVHSFE Location

OPEN Makers aan de markt

Date & time Fri 7 June • 20:00 – 22:30 Admittance Free Niek Hilkmann and Sandra Gnjatovic are two artists and mad lovers. Combining their different talents they create sublime works that overthrow postmodern digital boredom. In May, Sandra and Niek will be at OPEN Makers to create an analogue VHS-studio open to the visitors. Using two-dimensional backdrops and homemade props they aim at creating two short movies to premiere at LISFE during a special VHS event called LISVHSFE (Leiden International Short VHS Film Event). During this event, curated by Niek and Sandra, the role of VHS as a means of defiance and evoker of optimism is not only discussed, but also shown, through contemporary short VHS movies.

We are also happy to announce that 2013 will see the arrival of a professional Jury for LISFE! Three pros of the world of cinema will select the best student and professional films from our main competition. But we still want our audience’s opinion! This year too you will be able to vote the film you liked best and help it win the Audience award! Come and experience short films like you have never done before! – 10 –
