Finding Koala

Page 1

Koala Distribution Koalas are widely distributed across the Lismore local government area. There are relatively high concentrations in many parts of urban Lismore and surrounding areas, including Tregeagle, Wyrallah and Tucki in the south east, and around Rosebank and Federal areas in the northeast. Sick and injured koalas are brought to Friends of the Koala Care and Research Centre located on Rifle Range Road near Southern Cross University. The campus is situated in a koala corridor.

If the koala has a red tag on one of their ears they have been into the Care and Research Centre before. Male koalas are tagged on the left ear and females on the right.

Koalas are usually observed sleeping in forks of gum tree branches, close to the trunk. When eating they are more likely to be at the end of the branches. Normally they are high in the canopy.

More evidence of koalas will be scats, otherwise known as pellets or droppings, on the ground around the base of gum trees. They are bullet shaped and about the size of the top of your finger.

Put on your detective hat. Check out the trunks of gumtrees to find koala scratches on the bark. Try the trees around the back of the Koala Care Centre.
