of the Northern Rivers are like no other place in the world. Tucked away in the rolling hills of northern NSW, the region is renowned for alternative living, World Heritage national parks, extraordinary artists and gourmet produce.
Lismore is the dynamic and creative hub of the Northern Rivers, with a mix of quirky, cosmopolitan shops and an array of dining alternatives and fabulous food. Lismore has a fully-certified organic market every Tuesday morning, a produce market in Magellan Street on Thursday afternoon and a Farmers Market every Saturday at the Lismore Showgrounds where you’ll find delicious fresh produce.

There are handcrafted wares at the weekend markets both in the city and in the villages. Each village boasts a unique character and history, with galleries, specialty stores and fantastic country dining options for all travellers. Lismore is surrounded by rich agricultural land and this is reflected in the variety and abundance of fresh produce and awardwinning dining. From wood-fired pizzas with handcrafted beer to contemporary Asian and innovative organic cuisine, the region comes to you on a plate. The Northern Rivers is renowned as one of Australia’s largest coffee-growing centres and the home of the macadamia. The area is famous for its gourmet cuisine, with worldwide exports of avocados, tropical and stone fruits, blueberries, pecans, herbs and organic produce, finger limes, goats cheeses and lemon myrtle

along with beef, pork and dairy. It’s also a centre of sport, with dozens of sporting facilities bursting with activity each weekend as well as special events, national and international fixtures and an amazing variety of sports. Entertainment abounds with live music in the city’s pubs and clubs. Lismore is a nursery for some of Australia’s most exciting and innovative musicians. Just 30kms from Lismore is the village of Nimbin. Once a sleepy dairy town, Nimbin is now famous as a hippie destination and alternative lifestyle capital. Nimbin is fascinating with its mural streetscape and colourful characters. The main street has an abundance of cafes, craft shops, galleries and shops. Sit back, relax, soak up the colour and enjoy the unique creative charm that makes Nimbin a world-famous destination.
Drop into the Visitor Centre for locally produced gifts and souvenirs. Not far from Nimbin, you’ll find some of Australia’s most majestic and precious national parks and nature reserves, in the caldera of the extinct Wollumbin volcano. The parks are well maintained, with picnic areas and boardwalks that give access to our magnificent natural wonders, from ancient Antarctic beech trees to the rare and extraordinary Albert’s Lyrebird. You’ll find their work on display at weekend markets, galleries, cafes, pubs and venues throughout the region. Our talented arts community is nurtured by progressive courses at Southern Cross University, North Coast TAFE and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium. Organisations such as Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA) and the Lismore Regional Gallery showcase the region’s creative spirit.

theatre For a dynamic playbill of live theatre and performance you can’t go past a visit to NORPA, a Lismore based performing arts organisation that creates, produces and presents cross art-form theatre from
its home at Lismore City Hall. NORPA is unique in that it is one of only a few theatre companies left in regional Australia that is creating and producing its own work.
the back alley gallery A visit to Lismore is not complete without a walk through the ‘Back Alley Gallery’. The back lanes of the Lismore City Centre have been transformed into a spectacular, larger-than-life gallery by talented local, national and international street artists.

Lismore Lantern Parade This award-winning festival lights up the streets every winter’s solstice with a magical parade, fiery finale and colossal street party. Viking Village Solstice Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of authentic village life. Watch warriors clash and bash and play in the fighting arena and games circle. Friendship Festival The Friendship Festival pays tribute to Lismore’s ‘friendship relationship’ with Conegliano in the Veneto of northern Italy, with a marketplace festival to celebrate the contribution made by Italian settlers to the district over the last 100 years.
Eat the Street Eat the Street is a one-day food festival that celebrates local and regional producers, manufacturers, vendors and restaurateurs and everything they have to offer in a vibrant street market environment.

Lismore Gemfest The largest gem, crystal, jewellery and fossil show in regional Australia. Nimbin MardiGrass A protest against cannabis prohibition, MardiGrass is a weekend held in the colourful village of Nimbin that includes comedy, music, presentations, forums, politics, art, and much more.

August Nimbin Poetry World Cup Hundreds of poets gather each year to perform at this fabulous event. Heats are held at cafes in Nimbin with the grand final on Sunday at Nimbin Town Hall.

September Lismore Cup Race Day The annual Lismore Cup Race Day is the feature race meeting on the Far North Coast and the social event of the year with a half-day public holiday in the Lismore region. Masters Games Held biennially, the Masters Games is a fun-filled, multi-sports event for over 30s with sports ranging from baseball and soccer to lawn bowls and golf. The Nimbin Show A traditional agricultural show with horses, cattle, poultry, wood chopping, dog trials, art, craft, fruit, vegetables and horticulture. It’s a sustainable farming expo, promoting natural farming methods and building technologies, with an opportunity to sample food and wares from paddock to plate.
December/ January Carols in the Heart Bring a picnic rug or blanket and enjoy an entertainment packed evening singing along to Carols. Activities include spotting Santa, face painting, jumping castles and an awesome fireworks display. Join North Coast locals at this free annual event and celebrate the Christmas spirit. bexhill (10k from Lismore) The view from the Open Air Cathedral makes it a popular spot for weddings or just a quiet place to sit and ponder. Bexhill’s tiny church attracts organists from Sydney and Brisbane.

The general store has the best homemade curries this side of Mumbai.
clunes (20k from Lismore) Once a staging post on the Lismore to Bangalow Road, Clunes is said to be the birthplace of the area’s dairy industry. There are some beautiful examples of federation houses and fine, early Australian church architecture. Clunes Local has great coffee and pizza and a friendly village atmosphere.

Surrounded by endless rows of macadamia plantations, Dunoon is one of the largest Macadamia growing regions in Australia. It’s also the gateway
to Rocky Creek Dam, the major source of the region’s drinking water and one of the most beautiful picnic and barbecue spots around. Swimming and boating are prohibited but there’s a great playground and plenty of nature walks. If you prefer to dine in style, take the family to the restaurant overlooking the lush grounds of the Dunoon and District Sports and Recreation Club.
eltham (15k from Lismore) Just off the Lismore to Bangalow Road, in a picturesque valley, is the historic railway village of Eltham. You can hire the local court for tennis then pop across the road for a refreshing ale at the Eltham Pub, with real country hospitality and great pub food. Along Boatharbour Road is Eltham Valley Pantry, a restored farmhouse café on a working pecan and coffee plantation.
the channon (20k from Lismore) The Channon is home to the North Coast‘s original craft market and, after more than 30 years, their “make it, bake it or grow it” credo still stands. On the second Sunday of each month, thousands of people pour into the village to enjoy homemade cuisine and hand-crafted goods and be entertained by buskers.
With up to 250 stalls, it’s one of the biggest markets in NSW. The heritage listed the Channon Tavern. Popular with visitors and locals, the Tavern’s restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday with delicious meals and crispy ales. Nearby is the World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park, where the rainforest trail follows the palm-fringed creek to Protesters Falls, named after
the anti-logging campaign in the late 1970s which led to the declaration of the national park.
wyrallah (10k from Lismore) Downstream from Lismore on the Wilsons River, the village of Wyrallah was once a bustling port. Just south of the village, the Aboriginal Bora Ring at the back of Tucki Tucki Cemetery

is a sacred ceremonial site for the Bundjalung people. Further down the road, the Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve is a koala haven that was planted in the 1950s by locals to preserve natural habitat.

There’s a wharf, boat ramp, free BBQs, and a skate park plus an outdoor museum, bushfood garden, huge butter churn sculpture and stories of Lismore’s history. Rocky Creek Dam – Rocky Creek Dam Rd, Dorroughby Surrounded by Nightcap National Park, Rocky Creek Dam has wonderful picnic and BBQ areas and views of the dam and surrounding countryside. It has a platypus viewing platform, boardwalk, pontoon bridge and four beautiful walks. No swimming, however, as the dam also provides much of the region’s water supply.
