The Military Exhibition

Research Centre

Lismore Regional Museum is an award-winning institution.

The display traces the military history of the area and features a rare original 1902 New South Wales Lancers jacket.

The Historical Society maintains a collection of manuscripts, personal diaries and memorabilia; printed materials such as electoral rolls, family and local histories, 17,500 photographs and over 600 maps relating to the district.

The Museum’s main display area is lined with red cedar from the homestead of the Kyogle pastoral run. White settlement began with cattle runs, followed by felling and exporting red cedar, a highly prized timber for joinery.

We hold indexes of early land grants, council rates books, newspapers, obituaries and many research files.

Timber was carried to Sydney by coastal shipping. This shipping later carried produce of many kinds and returned with vital supplies. Displays include numerous images of these ships and a comprehensive collection of timbers from the original rainforest. Artifacts and craft items of the early settlers are also displayed. The region was originally home to the peoples of the Bundjalung Nation.

The Research Centre is open to members of the Society and the general public. We are a volunteer organisation working to collect and preserve the region’s heritage. Written research enquiries are accepted and completed by volunteer researchers.

The Bundjalung Way The Bundjalung Yanha exhibition deals with the history and artefacts of the Bundjalung people.

A range of publications are available and a list can be provided at the Museum. For more information contact the museum or email: research@richhistory.org.au
