SANTA’S WONDERLAND RETURNS AS CAROLS GO VIRTUAL It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and COVID isn’t going to stop our community from coming together and celebrating the Festive Season – and Santa agrees! We received a message from the North Pole to let us know he will be taking up residence in Lismore at his Santa’s Wonderland at the Lismore Regional Gallery from December 9 to December 20, Wednesdays to Sundays. For the COVID-safety of our community, Santa also asked us to hold our popular Carols in the Heart in the virtual world this year. Both events are sponsored by the Lismore Workers Club.

Virtual Carols in the Heart

Presented by Lismore Workers Club, Carols will be live streamed on Council’s Facebook Page on Sunday, 13 December between 7pm and 8.30pm. We have two special guests - Miruisa who has been called “The Unconventional Pop Star” and Tim McCallum who performed at the Gabba during the AFL Grand Final. Last year, Miruisa released the album A Salute to The Seekers that debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Charts and was in the Top 20 on the Jazz and Blues charts for three consecutive months. Tim is a classically trained tenor and beside performing in front of 30,000 at the Gabba, he competed on The Voice in 2015. They will be joined by some of your favourite local performers, with a very special visit from Santa and Mrs Claus. Topping of the night will be a Community Choir.

Santa’s Wonderland

Shoppers of all ages from the young to the young at heart are invited to step into this magical Christmas world and enjoy fun festive activities between 9 December and 20 December. Santa’s Wonderland will be open Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 2pm, and after school on Thursday between 4pm and 6pm. Come along and: • Have a photo with Santa – bookings are essential for COVID-safe allocated timeslots. Booking details below. • Bring your letter to Santa and post it in Santa’s Lismore Postal Box. • Pick up a Christmas Treasure ‘Elf Hunt’ activity sheet to complete and redeem a small prize from a local CBD business. • Keep your eye out for local entertainers roaming the street and at The Quad spreading the Christmas Cheer!

IN MEMORY OF CORY JAMES Lismore City Council Acting General Manager Peter Jeuken last week unveiled Council’s new Indigenous work shirt in memory of Cory James and announced Malcolm Saunderson from Council’s Parks Team as the inaugural recipient of the Cory James Memorial Scholarship. Cory James was a member of Council’s roads crew who died suddenly in October 2019. He was a proud Bundjalung/Yaegl man and is sorely missed by his family and Council colleagues, who formed a moving guard of honour at his funeral wearing black armbands. The idea of a shirt with an Indigenous design for Council workers was something Cory had envisioned to recognise Council’s Indigenous staff and to promote Indigenous culture and heritage within the community. Sadly, Cory died before his vision was realised. In honour of his memory, Council has produced a shirt using Cory’s original artwork. This artwork is a replica of designs Cory hand-painted on a surfboard that reflects his ancestral dreaming path. This includes three distinct circles representing the three islands where his ancestors are from – Ullagundai Island, Cabbage Tree Island and Stradbroke Island – as well as his handprint and signature.

There are also symbols that represent people gathering around a campfire and the connection between groups in his grandfather’s country here in Lismore, while his mother Jenny Smith hand-painted a snake – his family’s ancestral totem – to complete the design. The Cory James Memorial Scholarship provides $5000 annually to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Council employee who wishes to undertake further study to support their aspiration of developing a leadership role within Council and the community.

NIMBIN POOL OPENS THANKS TO COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of local volunteers, the free Nimbin Pool will open to the community from Monday, 30 November. Lismore City Council has worked with the Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre and Friends of the Nimbin Pool to train a team of

COVID-19 safety volunteers who will staff the facility during opening hours. The Nimbin Pool will be open from 7.30am to 6pm seven days a week. Hours and days of operation may change depending on volunteer availability, but the community will be notified of any changes well in advance. Council’s COVID-19 safety volunteers will be on site to collect up-todate contact tracing records and monitor COVID-19 hygiene, ensuring compliance with the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Public Health Orders. This has been an extraordinary community effort and Council would sincerely like to thank all the volunteers who are giving their time to open this much-loved community facility It is a great example of a community that is active and looks after one another in times of need. Please respect the role of the COVID-19 safety volunteers and follow their directions. As we have seen recently in Victoria and South Australia, the threat of COVID-19 is far from over and it is vital that we all remain vigilant and play our part in keeping our communities safe. More volunteers are needed to help with the roster– anyone interested should email the Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre at admin@nnic.org.au. Training is simple and you can give as much or as little time as you wish. All volunteers will need a valid Working with Children Check. This can be completed free of charge at www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au.
