SECOND HAND SATURDAY IS BACK! The North Coast’s biggest day of garage sales - Second Hand Saturday is coming back not once but twice this year, giving residents even more opportunity to turn unwanted items into cash. Hosted by Council and North East Waste, registrations have just opened for the first event, which will be held on Saturday, 15 May. Dates are still to be confirmed for the second event later this year. Coordinator of Second Hand Saturday, Linda Tohver said “although we missed last year, the event will now run for the 12th time since it began in 2005, giving residents the chance to once again be involved in a positive community movement that reduces waste sent to landfill”. “Many of us have had a lot of extra time at home over this past year to look at what we no longer use, so it’s a great prompt to put those items aside and get ready to turn them into cash,” she said. The popular community event is a coordinated approach across seven North Coast councils, with free advertising of registered garage sales in Lismore, Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Kyogle, Richmond Valley and the Clarence Valley. All registered garage sales will appear online and on the free Second Hand Saturday App. All you need to do is register online at

before 8 May, 2021.
Plus those who register for the first date will once again be given the option during registration to hold a second ‘leftovers’ sale the following weekend on Saturday, 22 May.
Participating garage sales will be provided with COVID-19 safe operating guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of our community. LISMORE YOUTH FESTIVAL Lismore Youth Festival is back bigger and better than ever! Three days packed with music, performance, art and workshops to entertain and inspire young people. Lismore Youth Festival will take place across multiple venues in Lismore on Wednesday 14, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 April. And it’s all FREE! Kicking off the festival on Wednesday, 14 April at NORPA at Lismore City Hall, Bundjalung hip-hop sensation and 2020 Triple J Unearthed Winner of the Year JK-47 will headline an awesome line-up of music by local acts. Then on Thursday, 15 April and Friday, 16 April, The Quad and surrounding buildings will come alive with a half-pipe, skating comps, DJ’s, comedy, light saber dance offs, and a huge workshop program that offers everything from street art to bush survival! Lismore Regional Gallery will feature youth art exhibitions by Defiant / Beyond Empathy and The Rainbow Collective (LGBTIQ Youth Group). “Lismore Youth Festival is going to be huge,” said Blake Rhodes, of Dream Bigger who has helped curate the music program. “Lismore’s coolest organisations have joined forces to create something really special and positive for young people in our region.

SOUTH LISMORE FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT The ribbon on the $8.2 million South Lismore Flood Mitigation Project was officially cut last week after it had already passed the test of two floods. The project also came in under budget, which meant Council could extend the scope of work to include the upgrade of Caniaba Street which will ensure road access to the newly created industrial lots meet contemporary standards. Funded by the NSW Government, the project involved the removal of 410,000m³ of soil from a 58-hectare area of land owned by Council to reduce flood levels to the north. Flood modelling suggests the project should reduce peak water levels in the CBD, North Lismore and South Lismore by as much as 100mm in a 1-in-100-year flood event. The excavated material was used to fill nearby industrial land within Lismore’s floodplain and facilitate the expansion of the South Lismore Industrial Estate.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Peter Jeuken said project has already improved Lismore’s disaster resilience. “This project was endorsed by the Lismore Floodplain Management Committee and is part of a range of measures detailed in the Lismore Flood Mitigation Plan to help safeguard the community and increase disaster resilience,” he said. “During the last two floods, you could see water being diverted around the CBD and flowing through channels back into the Wilsons River.” SEE Civil carried out the work which was overseen by NSW Public Works Advisory and Council. During preliminary works Council relocated two major sewer mains, which were ‘bedded’ (backfilled with material to protect the pipe) using 1500 tonnes of crushed glass from the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre. “This is a great example of reusing a waste material plus there is a significant cost saving to the project from using this bedding material opposed to traditional crushed rock,” Mr Jeuken said.
NESBITT PARK BIKING FACILITY REDEVELOPMENT Council will start work on the first of two bike projects at Nesbitt Park in South Lismore next month. The first project involves the construction of a new Mountain Bike Skills Course and will be built where the existing BMX pump track is currently located, adjacent to the playground. This project will create a professionally designed and constructed skills course for mountain bikes. The new course will be suitable for mountain bikers with beginner to intermediate skills. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2021 and is funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund. Council will also be upgrading the BMX pump track at Nesbitt Park. The improved pump track will be professionally designed and will be relocated next to the Mountain Bike Skills Course. Work is due to commence on this project in mid to late-2021, once a contractor has been appointed. This project has been part funded by Council and the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund.

INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK
You are invited to join us for a Saturday, May 8 for a morning of compost workshops, children’s activities and DIY beeswax wrap to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week (2-8 May 2021). We will be holding two composting workshops where you can learn how to make your own compost bin, the basics of home composting and how you can use your own compost to nourish your plants. We will also host a beeswax wrap workshop and supply all the materials to make your own wrap to take home. Children’s activities include award-winning storytelling to celebrate the earth, helping with the beeswax wraps, designing their own calico bag and mini tours of the surrounding Rainforest Botanic Gardens, if weather permits.
