CRAFTY TYPES AND TINKERERS WANTED AT LISMORE REVOLVE SHOP We are looking for clever, creative and skilled locals with some time on their hands to indulge their passion and help Council give second-hand items a new life. We are looking for people to join our Upcycle Volunteer Team at the Lismore Revolve Shop and use any skills or talent you have to help us fix, re-purpose or display our second-hands goods. Do you love fixing old gear like motorcycles and mowers? Do you love books and would like to make a beautiful display? Are you a woodworker who’d like to help fix things before they go on sale? The Revolve Shop philosophy is all about keeping items out of landfill and encouraging people to purchase second-hand items to take home and paint, fix or repurpose. Council is seeking expressions of interest from any local community member over 18 who would like to join the Upcycle Volunteer Team and work for four hours each week at the Revolve Shop. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to share their skills and help us continue improving our sustainable waste management,” Council’s Environmental Strategies Officer Barbara Jensen said. “We know there are lots of people in our community including retirees who have amazing skills and practical knowledge, and we want to tap into that and create a really dynamic team of local craftspeople and tinkerers who can help us repurpose goods. It’s a great social thing for people to do and a chance to spend a little time each week doing something you love. “With your help Lismore City Council will be able to add value and build community use of the Revolve Shop, extending the life and usefulness of our recycling.” Volunteers would work out at the Lismore Revolve Shop, located within the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre on Wyrallah Road. AVIATION EXPO READY TO TAKE OFF FOR ITS FOURTH YEAR The annual Lismore Aviation Expo is back in 2018, bigger and better than ever. Presented by local business Fast Aviation, the Lismore Aviation Expo will take place on Sunday, 29 July from 9am to 4pm at the Lismore Aviation Centre in Three Chain Road, South Lismore. The day will feature death defying aerobatic displays by Paul Bennet Air Shows, adventure flights in WWII Warbirds, joy flights and learn to fly discovery flights. Paul Bennet’s talented team will have you on the edge of your seat with demonstrations from the Sky Aces in their Wolf Pitts Pro and Model 12 Pitts, as well as demonstrations in a T28 Trojan, Yak 52, ¾ spitfire and a Wirraway. On the ground there will be something for everyone with static aircraft and emergency services displays, food stalls and activities for the kids. The event has grown significantly over the past three years, with more than 8000 people attending last year’s expo. Due to the nature of the site, unfortunately there will be no on-site parking, but Council will run free shuttle buses from Oakes Oval, Lismore Lake and the Lismore Airport all hours of the Sunday event. Lismore City Council’s Business Development Coordinator Danielle Hanigan thanked naming rights sponsor Fast Aviation and said their support of the event was integral to it becoming a mainstay on the east coast aviation calendar. “We are very fortunate to have the support of Fast Aviation as well as our other major sponsors Southern Cross University and RPQ, who have come on board this year,” Danielle said. Fast Aviation is a family-owned and operated Northern Rivers company that was established in 2016 in response to local and regional demand for professional aircraft charter and advanced pilot training.
The Lismore Aviation Expo has expanded in 2018 to include a special day on Saturday, 28 July focusing on career pathways for those interested in getting into the aviation industry or learning to fly. There will be talks from experienced pilots covering all you need to know about recreational, commercial and airforce flying. RURAL LANDHOLDER INITIATIVE KICKING GOALS Since the first round of the Rural Landholder Initiative (RLI) in 2016, 48 projects on farms and rural lifestyle properties have been undertaken with great results for biodiversity across Lismore. Projects have addressed some of the serious environmental and land management issues in our region, such as weed invasion and loss of native species in sensitive areas, koala habitat restoration and fencing cattle out of rivers and creeks. Round five of the RLI will begin in July 2018 and will be boosted by a NSW Government Environmental Trust grant of $100,000 over three years. Staff are in the process of finalising 31 new projects with landholders with on-ground investment totalling $115,000. Meanwhile, the next of our free field days for landholders is advertised below.
Rainforest Restoration at Rosebank Saturday, 15 September, 9.30am to 2pm This rainforest restoration and revegetation field day will showcase low-cost strategic approaches to restore biodiversity along habitat corridors. The host property has good examples of remnant rainforest slowly restored over the past 20 years and the owner will take us on a guided walk to see the work as it is staged. This is a great opportunity for newcomers to the Rosebank, Dorroughby and Repentance Creek areas to network with natural resource management experts and other local landholders. If you have patches of degraded rainforest and are seeking knowledge about how to recognise and approach the problems of weeds and sustainable restoration, this event is for you.

SEA OF BELLIES SHOWCASES ART A beautiful new exhibition featuring painted belly casts of pregnant Aboriginal women or partners of Aboriginal men will be on show from 6-15 July at Lismore Regional Gallery as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations. Binjil Dubais Northern Rivers Sea of Bellies is about connecting pregnant women with important Aboriginal maternity services and fostering a culture of connection and support with local Elders and artists. Binjil Dubais (meaning pregnant women in the Bundjalung language) was launched locally at the Lismore Women’s Festival in 2017. Sea of Bellies first began in Moree in 2004 as a collaboration between Beyond Empathy and the Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Services. The project linked pregnant women with prenatal health awareness and support, through the art of belly casting. Northern Rivers Sea of Bellies is a collaboration between Beyond Empathy, the Northern NSW Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Service, the YWCA NSW and Lismore City Council. As part of the project, artist Jo Davidson trained local midwives in belly casting and local Elders and artists were invited to paint the belly casts. It is a process in which creating art allows for the sharing of stories and cultural knowledge between mums and the Elders while facilitating access to health and social services workers.
T AND CULTURAL CONNECTION Binjil Dubais met every week for a year in the old Lismore Regional Gallery, where young local artist Caitlin Wilmot was employed as a plaster trainee to work on the casts. “The results are just astonishing – not only has this project been hugely positive for the expectant mothers involved, but also for the midwives and artists and all who have helped facilitate the project,” Council’s Partnering and Community Engagement Officer Catherine Rosenbaum said. “It is important to remember that the midwives participation has been above and beyond their normal duties, which demonstrates their strong commitment to the Aboriginal community. “All mums, and especially new mums, need support and guidance, and this has been a great way to get mums the support they need and to build connections with midwives and important services early in the pregnancy. The project has provided a fun, gentle and caring environment where that can take place.” The Binjil Dubais Northern Rivers Sea of Bellies exhibition is on display at Lismore Regional Gallery from 6-15 July and entry is free. It is part of celebrating NAIDOC Week and the 2018 theme:

TRAFFIC ALERT: ROADWORKS Please allow for additional travel time if travelling through our roadworks: Bruxner Highway outside Bunnings, South Lismore (fixing the road) Expect weekend delays over coming weeks as we complete roadworks here on the behalf of the NSW Roads and Maritime Services subject to weather. Northbound traffic heading towards Lismore will be detoured via Krauss Avenue at the airport during weekend daylight hours. Where possible, we will maintain southbound traffic through the worksite under speed restrictions. Bruxner Highway at Schneiders Lane, McKees Hill (fixing the road) Weekday delays will continue over July for these road and drainage works on behalf of NSW Roads and Maritime Services. Kyogle Road at Tuncester (fixing the road) Traffic delays Monday to Saturday can be expected over the coming weeks as work on this section of Kyogle Road is completed. Wyrallah Road north of Wyrallah village (fixing the road) Traffic delays Monday to Saturday can be expected over the coming weeks as sections of Wyrallah Road north of Wyrallah village up to Monaltrie Lane are upgraded. Wyrallah Road, Sheehan Road to Maxwell Lane, East Coraki (fixing the road) Traffic delays Monday to Saturday can be expected here also over the coming weeks as we fix this section of road.
TENDER: AMENITIES BLOCK T2018-12: Mortimer Oval Player Amenities Block – Design and Construct Tenders are being sought for the design, supply and construction of a player amenities block to be located adjacent to Mortimer Oval in Lismore. PROPOSED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Senior Citizens’ Social Club – use of the Goonellabah Community Centre Under Section 356 of the Local Government Act 1993, Council gives notice to subsidise the annual licence fee by 50% for use of the Goonellabah Community Centre by the Senior Citizens’ Social Club for the term of their licence agreement. PROPOSED CHARGES FOR SWIM TEAMS SEASON CENTRE HIRE On 12 June 2018, Lismore City Council resolved to place on public exhibition proposed charges for the pricing of Swim Team – Season Centre Hire at the Lismore Memorial Baths and the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre. The proposed charge for the Swim Teams – Season Centre Hire is $10 per member per season. (Fee covers usage – refer to clauses four and five of the Access Licence including GST). COUNCIL DECIDES... At the 12 June ordinary meeting, Council decisions included the following: • Council resolved (7/4 in favour) to adopt Amendment 23 to the Lismore Development Control Plan (Chapter 16 – Rural Landsharing Communities) in accordance with section 21 of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Regulation 2000. At the 19 June ordinary meeting, Council decisions included the following:
• Council resolved (7/4 in favour) to adopt the Imagine Lismore Operational Plan 2018/19 with several amendments to the draft budget. These included the following: Amend the budget to reflect the revenue from the NSW Office of Sport – Albert Park Redevelopment grant of $4.9 million being received in 2017/18; amend the budget to reflect the expense and revenue from the NSW Roads and Maritime Services – NSW Government Safer Roads Program of $280,700 in 2018/19; approve borrowings of up to $5,490,000 for the 2018/19 Borrowings Program; include project 43 for an additional surveillance camera at Nimbin Community Centre for a cost of up to $11,500; amend the kilolitre rate for septic waste disposal to $30 per kilolitre; and exclude the proposed special event/festival fees at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre to allow for consultation and a report back to Council.
• Council resolved (unanimously) to distribute funds through its Annual Community Grants Scheme to local community organisations and groups.
