LOCAL MATTERS LISMORE CITY COUNCIL NEWS ISSUE 131, 16 JANUARY 2019

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS HONOUR COM We will be honouring exceptional citizens and welcoming new Australians during the 2019 Australia Day Awards ceremony on Saturday, 26 January at Lismore City Hall.

Local groups and individuals have been nominated in the 2019 Australia Day Awards for a host of achievements in disciplines ranging from sports, the arts and the environment to community services. Mayor Isaac Smith will also host the annual Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming new citizens from more than 20 countries including Cyprus, Zambia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Thailand, New Zealand, the United States, Vanuatu, India, Kenya, Iran and Libya. This year’s Australia Day Awards will be presented by Lismore’s 2019 Australia Day ambassador, Mel Thomas (pictured right). Mel is a black-belt martial artist, public speaker, writer and advocate for breaking the cycle of violence against women and children across Australia. Mel is a survivor of childhood domestic violence and both a victim and perpetrator of teen bullying who established the violence prevention education program KYUP! in 2013. Pronounced ‘Key-up’ after a warrior power shout, KYUP! tackles uncomfortable issues surrounding bullying, gender equality, domestic violence and consent with practical life protection skills. She launched the program in response to the growing number of domestic violence reports in Australia and to date more than 10,000 young people have participated in her programs.

MMUNITY SPIRIT

Mel is now the ambassador for Layne Beachley’s Aim for the Stars Foundation and was also named the Game Changer of the Year winner in the Women of the Year Awards in 2018. “We are very excited to welcome Mel as our Australia Day ambassador – she is an amazing role model for young people and I am looking forward to hearing her story first-hand,” Lismore Mayor Isaac Smith said. “I am particularly pleased that our young Australia Day nominees and winners will get a chance to hear her keynote address on the day. I think her journey is one that we can all learn from.” The 2019 Australia Day Awards ceremony will be followed by morning tea and everyone is welcome to attend. The ceremony will begin at 9am on Saturday, 26 January at Lismore City Hall.

KEEP VIGILANT ABOUT YELLOW CRAZY ANTS Residents in Lismore and surrounds should be aware that the movement restrictions implemented to prevent the spread of yellow crazy ants have been extended until June 2019. The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Local Land Services are leading the response to yellow crazy ants, which were first discovered in the Lismore region in May 2018. The infestation is restricted to two sites: the Lismore CBD and Terania Creek. Yellow crazy ants are highly invasive and can build super colonies that devastate local flora and fauna and impact on agricultural production and the horticultural industry. Yellow crazy ants are often spread with the movement of plants and soil. While the ants themselves spread relatively slowly, it is critical that the community works hard to prevent these pests from spreading by hitchhiking on garden materials, soil and with people and their belongings. The movement restrictions that will stay in place until June 2019 prevent the carrying of vegetative matter and soil within a 5km radius of the Lismore CBD unless it is directly to the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre. The DPI encourages people to continue to follow the movement restriction rules and report any unusual ants. Extensive surveillance has been conducted and the two known infestations are receiving ongoing treatment. The program has been progressing well with a clear reduction in the number and vigour of nests in the CBD and at Terania Creek. The response team has put a lot of effort into locating specific nests within the CBD infestation and has trained an odour detection dog to accurately locate any additional nests. The DPI will be undertaking further treatment and surveillance activities in early 2019.

For further information visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au. To report any suspect ants visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/antreport or phone the DPI Biosecurity Hotline on 1800 680 244.

FRONT

Our recycling industry is changing and we all need to be flexible and adaptable to make the most of our valuable resources. There are now far tighter controls on the contamination of recyclables and it is more important than ever that we are placing the correct materials in the right bin. Late last year Council launched a campaign called #RecycleRight which details changes to how we recycle at home. This has been developed with NE Waste and our neighbouring councils as a region-wide campaign across the Northern Rivers. The main message is to keep it simple and ensure you are only placing clean and correct recycling materials in your yellow recycling bin. It is essential that we have clean recyclables that we can send off for remanufacturing in Australia and overseas. If we all do this, we can keep our resources coming ‘round and get the most life out of every product. Please take the time to learn the new recycling routines and help us #RecycleRight. We have plenty of information on our website to help you understand the changes as well as frequently asked questions that provide further background about why we needed to make these changes. Please take some time and visit www.northerriverswaste.com.au to familiarise yourself with the new campaign. Thank you!
