LOCAL MATTERS LISMORE CITY COUNCIL NEWS ISSUE 143, 3 JULY 2019

Recycling #4 Myths & Facts This fortnight in our recycling series, we are looking at lids and other small items such as straws and bread tags. Unfortunately, we can no longer recycle these items. There are two reasons for this: 1. We were previously sending small mixed plastics to China to be processed. But here in Australia (where we now recycle all our materials) there is no processor that can recycle mixed plastics. 2. Anything small is unable to be sorted at the Materials Recovery Facility – it falls through gaps in our recycling machinery and contaminates our other recyclables and glass sand. We ask that you do not place any items smaller than a credit card into your recycling bin including bottle lids, bread tags and straws. We can no longer accept these, even if collected together in an old milk bottle. We need to keep our recycling bins free of small pieces of plastic and other small, non-recyclable items. Remember – if it’s smaller than a credit card, keep it out!

Tip 1: Small pieces of paper or cardboard can go in your green organics bin. Larger lids such as the lids off large yoghurt tubs can go in your recycling bin because they are bigger than a credit card size.

Tip 2: Waste avoidance is the best way to reduce your plastic use. Make a commitment to say ‘no thanks’ to straws and instead of buying bread in a plastic bread bag, take a cloth bag to your local bakery to buy your bread.

NATIONAL TREE DAY EVENTS IN LISMORE The Wilsons Rivers Landcare Group and Friends of the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens are both holding National Tree Day events in Lismore on Sunday, 28 July, and invite the community to participate. Wilsons River Landcare is hosting a community tree planting at Simes Bridge in Winterton Parade, North Lismore, to plant 1000 native trees. Lismore City Council has supported the event with a small grant that has contributed to site preparation while Rous County Council has donated 420 trees. The Wilsons River Landcare Group has also launched a crowdfunding campaign so you can help plant trees even if you can’t be there on the day. Go to www.chuffed.org/project/trees-for-the-wilsons-river-in-lismore to make a donation.

Friends of the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens will hold a guided walk of the Sensory Garden on National Tree Day from 10-11am. Although they won’t be planting trees on the day, the volunteers invite visitors to join their Sunday working group of dedicated Friends to plant some smaller plants between 9am and 10am. You can also explore the gardens, enjoy the serenity of the hoop pine forest and walk the labyrinth, or visit the Useful Plants Garden to learn about the many uses of native dry rainforest plants. Please join these activities on National Tree Day and help plant and celebrate trees. Did you know? National Tree Day was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John. It is Australia’s largest community tree planting. This year they hope to plant one million trees across the country and more than 300,000 volunteers are expected to take part. For more information on National Tree Day, visit www.treeday.planetark.org.
