ARTCYCLE... GET CRAFTY AND HELP REDUCE LANDFILL! Need materials for your art? Love creating things from recycled treasures? The Lismore Revolve Shop is trialling a new initiative – Artcycle – where old or discarded art materials are re-sold to be created into new masterpieces. The first Artcycle event will be held on Saturday, 30 November with a smorgasbord of goodies for anyone who loves creating or making art. As well as traditional art materials such as paint, brushes, fabrics and beads, there will also be lots of quirky items for creative and crafty people. From buckets of corks and coloured balls of wool to old crockery that can be smashed to make mosaics, there is lots to choose from. The new Artcycle initiative is perfect for schools, preschools and anyone crafty who wants to make Christmas decorations or start work on a new artwork or creative project. Artcycle will be held every three months or whenever the Revolve Shop is bursting at the seams with creative and arty supplies. The first Artcycle will be held on Saturday, 30 November from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Lismore Revolve Shop, located within the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre on Wyrallah Road. Our wonderful Revolve Shop volunteers will be running our first Artcycle event – a big thank you to them for giving their time to help keep items out of landfill!

BUSH REGENERATION GRANTS FOR RURAL LANDHOLDERS... APPLY NOW! Council’s Rural Landholder Initiative grants program is now open and we are calling for expressions of interest from rural landholders. Council provides grants to help private rural landholders undertake works for bushland restoration, habitat improvement and landscape regeneration. This might be in the form of weed management and removal, tree planting, stock fencing to protect waterways and the like. The Rural Landholder Initiative grants are for property owners who are already focused on efforts to conserve and restore their land, but require some extra funding and mentor support. Contact Council’s Rural Extension Officer Kate Steel for more information about eligibility, project ideas and planning, or submit an expression of interest form before applications close on 13 December. Successful applicants will receive funding to undertake projects in 2020. The RLI is funded through the Council’s Biodiversity Management Strategy, which has a broad aim to improve the quality and extent of native habitat in the Lismore Local Government Area. For more information or to apply, visit www.lismore.nsw.gov.au. If you have questions or would like to discuss your project, phone Kate Steel on 1300 87 83 87.

WORKS UNDERWAY ON MAJOR FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT Work is now underway on the $8.2 million South Lismore Flood Mitigation Project behind Lismore Regional Airport. The project, which is funded by the NSW Government, involves removing 410,000m³ of soil from a 58-hectare area of land owned by Council. Flood modelling suggests the project should reduce peak water levels in the CBD, North Lismore and South Lismore by as much as 100mm in a 1-in-100-year flood event. “This project has been discussed for decades and it is great to see work finally begin,” Mayor Isaac Smith said. “As we saw in the 2017 flood, the levee alone will not keep floodwaters out of our CBD if we get too much rain. “This new flood mitigation work will go a long way to protecting our city from future floods.” The excavated material will be used to fill nearby industrial land within Lismore’s floodplain and facilitate the expansion of the South Lismore Industrial Estate. Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Peter Jeuken said work is expected to take 12 months to complete.

“This project was endorsed by the Lismore Floodplain Management Committee and is part of a range of measures detailed in the Lismore Flood Mitigation Plan to help safeguard the community and increase disaster resilience,” he said. SEE Civil has been appointed to carry out the work and NSW Public Works Advisory will project manage the construction on Council’s behalf. During preliminary works Council relocated two major sewer mains, which were ‘bedded’ (backfilled with material to protect the pipe) using 1500 tonnes of crushed glass from the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre. “This is a great example of reusing a waste material plus there is a significant cost saving to the project from using this bedding material opposed to traditional crushed rock,” Mr Jeuken said. Council has developed a web page at www.yoursay.lismore.nsw.gov.au with information and a Q&A section where residents can ask questions. Affected landowners can also call Council direct with any queries on 1300 87 83 87.

COUNCIL DECISIONS AND MEETINGS At its ordinary meeting on 12 November, Council resolved to adjourn the meeting until 19 November 2019 as a result of the emergency bushfire situation. The 19 November meeting agenda included the proposed Special Rate Variation that would apply to all Lismore ratepayers. The result of this decision was unknown at the time of going to press. Please check the news section of the Council website at www.lismore.nsw.gov.au for the final decision. Council also resolved to hold two additional ordinary meetings in 2019 to ensure all outstanding matters for the year can be finalised. This means the final meetings for 2019 are as follows: • Tuesday, 26 November at 6pm in the Council Chambers. • Tuesday, 3 December at 6pm in the Council Chambers. • Tuesday, 10 December at 6pm in the Council Chambers. If there is no business to conduct at the additional ordinary meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 3 December, the General Manager may, in consultation with the Mayor, cancel the meeting. If this occurs the cancellation will be advertised on Council’s website (check the calendar) and on Council’s social media channels. To view all business papers visit www.lismore.nsw.gov.au.
