What about life on other planets? Do you know how many planets there are? How many galaxies? How many stars? Ever questioned how it’s possible that there are so many other globes around us and as far as we know we are the only ones walking and talking. The number of galaxies in the universe is largely unknown to humans, in fact, scientists speculate that there might be an infinite number of galaxies. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is estimated to host about 100 billion planets most of which orbit a star. In the near past, astronomers have discovered hundreds of planets in our galaxy, some of which exhibit the characteristics of planet Earth raising the speculation that they might support life. There are eight planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto, a dwarf planet, was classified as one of the solar system planets when it was first discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. However, it is now considered to be one of the largest known members of the Kuiper Belt—a collection of icy bodies on the outer fringes of the solar system. Pluto was demoted from its planetary status in 2006 when a body of scientists decided a formalized definition of the term “planet.”

With so many more galaxies around us, it would be very strange that we are the only living creatures between all these beautiful stars. So much “space” and only one planet which supports life. I refuse to believe that we are alone. There must be more than just us over here. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to another planet for a vacation? Instead of going to the Maldives we could go to Planet Sunrise to get our tan and cocktail. Spent some time with “the others”. Even if we find other life it still would be very difficult to travel to them and back home. Space travelling is still very expensive and too slow to “just” leave for a week or weekend. Maybe in time, someone invents a brand-new way of travelling. Just like they invented the high-speed trains, maybe they find a way to make space shuttles faster or even travel at the speed of light. Who knows we can accomplish that in a few years? Where would you go if that would be possible? Would you like to see some other worlds or are you staying at our beautiful globe? Let’s keep on dreaming and hold the thought of things that might be possible in the near future. Probably it will not happen in the next 5 years as things need to be invented, tested for speed and safety. It needs to be at a fair price because else nobody would start travelling that way if we can’t pay the ticket. But perhaps this is something you can do to make it easier and maybe one day we could say “hi” to the aliens… Sources: http://www.skyandtelescope.com http://www.worldatlas.com Top Photo by Clarisse Meyer / Middle Photo by Alan Carrillo Go back to the top of the page.
