and listening.  KNOWLEDGE of the English language and how it works.  EXPERIENCE of a wide range of texts: novels, poetry, non-

fiction, modern drama, Shakespeare, media.  WORKING and LEARNING in a variety of ways, in teams,

groups, pairs and independently.

Assessment  Each unit is assessed for particular

skills in either reading or writing.

 Students will have a chance to develop these skills throughout a unit of

work with feedback and targets from their teacher.

 This will help them to know how to succeed in the end-of-unit

assessment.

 Each assessment will be given a sub-level and will be stored in a KS3

assessment folder as a record of your child’s progress through Years 79.

This year in Science your child will study  Chemistry – Particles, Chemical Reactions, Rocks  Physics – Forces and magnetism, Energy, Universe  Biology – Living things, Life processes

Assessments  Each unit contains 3 short skills and content tests. When

these are marked, your child will receive targets for improvement  Extended writing tasks  End of unit tests – exam-style questions, 45 minute tests  Homework – a 3 week research homework is set every 3 weeks

Things you can do to help:  Ensure that your child completes their homework  Purchase the KS3 Science revision guide, available from

school for £2.75  Help your child join an enrichment club

Your child will be assessed at the end of each half term.

Things you can do to help:  Talk to your child about what they have learnt  Discuss current affairs with your child. Things that are

in the news and let them know that there may be different views on an issue.  Help them to find out more information on a topic by looking on the internet or going to the library.  When they are talking encourage them to explain why things happen and to justify their choices.

Things you can do to help:  Ensure you check planners for home works  Ensure that your child has equipment – pens, coloured

pencils, rulers, erasers etc  Please bring in food ingredients for Specialist Curriulum and allow them to help you in the kitchen and shop for food  Expand their life experiences by taking them to places of interest, galleries etc  If you have any skills in our curriculum area eg woodwork, painting, drawing, dressmaking, embroidery etc

What is vertical tutoring ?  The new vertical system is for tutor time only,  for 20 minutes per day. 1 hour per fortnight  Your child will remain for the majority of their

time at school within their year group for all aspects of the taught curriculum.
