KEY WORDS |Outdoor Reading Space, Printed Books, Communicate COLLABORATOR |Cheng Litian, Xu Jing SITE |Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province DATE |2017\3-5 (12 weeks) MAIN ASSIGNMENT|The traditional paper reading faces serious challenges in the rapid development of science and technology today. Based on this situation, we will have discussions on outdoor reading space. Using self-help machines as a medium for books and for reading, it creates a whole new atmosphere for reading paper books as a comprehensive experience, and makes reading a mechanism for people to communicate with each other, even to do more than that. BACKGROUND and STRATEGY
Private reading: T h e initial presentation of private reading was in the Mannerist period. Anton Nello Da Messina, (Antonello Da Messinal) in 1474 draw a painting "St. Jerome in his study room". In this oil painting, private reading was first put forward, the scale of the reading space and the design of reading facilities were fully displayed.
Budding of the public reading: reading space can be traced back to the Renaissance. One artwork of Raffaello Sanzio, “Athens school” (Scuola di Atene), in the painting Aristotle and Platon are in the central, dialoguing with each other. The Rome saints and Greeks are on the both sides, respectively standing aside, keep lying and squating reading posture, listening and writing.
Ancient Chinese liter ati began to appear in the late Han Dynasty, called "Jian an seven”.“Letter to predecessor Dezu” written by Cao Zhi, “Letter to Wuzhi” written by Cao Pi symbolized the era of literary consciousness. These literatis gathered in Yexia, they followed Cao Cao and his sons' leading. At that time, writing and literature become a fashion, creating a precedent for the literati Gallery.
Lan Pavilion gathering: It is the most elegant ancient literati gathering of China. In A.D.353, in spring, Wang Xizhi and more than 20 scholars gathered in Mount Kuaiji Lan Pavilion, drinking and poetizing.
West Park gathering: West Park is the private garden of Wang Shen in Northern Song Dynasty. At the beginning o f S o n g D y n a s t y, WangSheninvitedSuShi, Su Zhe, Huang Tingjian, as well as 19 contemporary scholars to have a par ty. After the par ty, Li Gonglin painted "Xiyuan Aristo map", Mi Fei created a Chinese calligraphy work “The Record of Xiyuan Gathering".

DESIGN IDEA
The gap between the residential buildings is squeezed out of a vertical space, and the windows on both sides are opened for toilets and kitchens. They are facing each other and are in a sheltered state for a long time. An outward facing is an abandoned trellis, in which a pile of groceries is piled up. This design is based on the reading intention, intended to create the children in the woods reading place to play, to a certain extent to solve the community outdoor activities within the district to students mainly demand and beautify the residential landscape. The bottom of the book house is a stacked terrace, which is the main parent-child reading area. The staggered pillars seem to place the experiencer between the sparse forests. The floor is strewn, interspersed with vines to create an atmosphere between the branches and leaves.

UNIT.02
ERRITORIAL & URBAN VIEW
The aim of the UNIT.01 is to establish and share the conditions to operate in a real place. We need to create tools that allows selection and specification of real characters that are hidden or forgotten. Multiscale and multidisciplinary views are necessary to consider landscape as cultural phenomena coming from a long process of mutation and perception. Trying to critically read physical, cultural and social phenomena is the first task. Later, the deep discussion and reading of the site will allows to use tools to visualize some special character connected with the role of landscape inside urban context. Traditions and contemporary needs are the boundaries to consider in a continuous interchange of necessities and dreams.

The UNIT.02 generate the strategic proposal rooted in the previous discussions and work. Through some selected thematic the students are working on tentative design with the aim to test the possibilities and the potentialities of the place. The process is multiscale and open to different perception and sensibilities. The selected tasks are connected with three main categories: territorial, urban and local. Each of them refers to different point of view in a wide range: from geography to climate, from cultural tradition to contemporary s c e n a r i o, f r o m c o n s o l i d a t e d s o c i a l environment to new fluxes of people, from the use of land to basic construction approach. The task is to design a strategy-map, geometrically recognizable and coherent with the general analysis and to select a special place representing some particular conditions where concentrate the energies for the next step.

STRATEGY II
The UNIT.03 will search the connection between landscape design and architecture. In this way the project of a Pavilion represents the focal point of some specific concepts developed during the first two UNITS. The Pavilion is defined as “primitive” because the character of the architecture has to be searched inside the basic features that connect the land with the human settlement. The Pavilion is generating from the real needs of the territory according with the local conditions. Such place creates social cohesion and the possibility to aggregate different activities. It is a “Think Tank” pavilion set for social participation, art expression, cultural activities, leisure and fun.
STRATEGY I
Master Plan with 4 Focus Area ▲ Focus Area 1 Connected with the concept ‘Connection’, this residential area with wetland garden is not only for better living standard but also for rebuild the city memory.
Focus Area 3 A big bridge spans the canal, linking the agricultural and food supply areas on both sides, providing life for the local residents and the wor ker s live on waterborne freight.
Focus Area 2 Since we consider our site as a north gate to Hangzhou, we need a landmark to manifest its status.T his ar ea includes a skyscraper as a landmark and a winter garden.
Focus Area 4 Located between the original industrial and residential areas, we choose to use nature to connect both, provide a natural and artificial combination of urban parks.

Mater Plan & Section
Concept Rendering I
Concept Rendering II
FOCUS AREA 1 In 2000, the most important element of this area was farmland. However, they all became buildings and factories. Connecting with the concept ‘connection’, we design this wetland garden not only for better living standard but also for rebuild the city memory. According to the grid of the land, we form textures of farmland and buildings. On the canal branch of our site, along the river there is a newly designed town. The town draws on the form of traditional houses, but not fully restored. We can understand it as a new way of life. Anyone who wants to escape from their life and explore a new ways of life can come here. In order to emphasize the continuity of farmland texture and to enhance the structure, we put the original high-rise buildings bottom of the overhead, so naturally can penetrate into the artificial. Along the river, we enter the westernmost part of the site which follows the grid structure but more natural. We broaden the canal, build a wetland park. Since the existing buildings around the park are mostly residential, we use a geometric wooden trestle to connect the high-rise buildings and the wetland on the sides of canal.
11
FOCUS AREA 2 In the whole Grand Cannel, the site is like a gate-way to Hangzhou from the north.Based on this, we need a land-mark building, so we site up a 200 meters high building in the site. As a comprehensive skyscraper, it can contain all the daily lives and functions people can imagine, such as business, enter tainment, community, office and so on. Free space and frame structure make the skyscraper be built with plants optionally. At the bottom of the overhead will not destroyed the original land. The low layer of the building surrounded by the winter garden which is transformed from the original factories. It solves the agriculture problems caused by the temperature change. So the farmers can continue grow the crops in winter to maintain the production. At the same time, the winter garden makes the green more natural on the surface in the site. In this way, the farmland, greenhouse, building, port produce an industry from the growing production, processing, transportation to the sale. So the surrounding people will be attracted to this area. As a result the environmental pollutions will be reduced, and the vitality of the original site will increase the public. The climate in the site is a typical climate in the south of the Yangtze River. The rainy season is very large, especially in spring. The scenery is the most beautiful in a year. So we use the traditional Chinese solar term “Grain Rain", named the total design of ours. “Grain Rain” is the sixth solar term, it means the arrival of cold weather has basically ended, the temperature rose faster. We hope to create a fresh and fresh atmosphere, let people relax and feel the beauty of nature.

THE POTTERY WORKSHOP
THE SITE AND DESIGN IDEA The workshop is located in the most secluded par t of the court, away from the main road, the flow of people is more stable. The whole design pursues a hidden, stable atmosphere. The appearance of large glass curtain wall and rubble makes the building more natural. In view of the larger scale of the building, semi embedded method is adopted, and the two layers staggered and trapezoidal field echoed. The roofs are planted areas that allow the building to enter one step to the tea hidden between the effect.
In order to solve the problem of handling materials, the entrance is divided into two, embedded in the mountains of the ground floor for storage and transportation of special, directly connected to the main road. The room also has two staircases that separate work from visitors.

The original site is lack of vitality and infrastructure. There are two main routes for students: the main road is 3.5m wide, for many people to walk; the second road is 1.8m wide, it's more winding than the first. However, the survey found that most students are willing to take the bent road.
They choose to return to the classroom directly after lunch, only a few students or back to the dormitory.

FORM EVOLUTION
Mater Plan
Prototype The original site is lack of the communication with nature.
Step 1 First, we add some seats which coincide with the terrain.
At the beginning, the road and the natural slope are separated, the road is only used as a traffic tool, students will not go to lawn because of its slope and material. We are going to change this phenomenon through adding new materials. The space form is connected with various shapes of cloud. Boundary blur is the natural state of cloud, on this natural slope, resulting in a platform, pathways, resting areas, walking area and other forms of space. But the functions are not limited, they’re in a border blurred state.
Step 2 In order to simulate the terrain, we add some arc plain concrete seats.
MATERIAL: WHITE CONCRETE
Students' Dormitory
Step 3 Plain concrete seats and the road mix together, become a fusion state.
20
Tree: for creating stay space. Grass: for increasing the sense of ‘Flow’.
The big camphora is not the center of the site, but also a natural resting space. We kept its characteristic (branches down to the ground), to create a wonderful gathering and entertainment space.
Different types of plants provide students with a wide range of extracurricular activities where they can chat, play, or study in quieter places, join study groups, or have classes outside.
